Is This DINC worth buying for $60 - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Background: I am not new to rooting android devices, have been rooting since the G1 came out, but I am going to be switching to Verizon when my Tmob contract is up. Have my eye on the thunderbolt for myself, but have found a DINC for my daughter that has been rooted, the seller says his SDCard errored and corrupted the SDcard and now the phone boots into bootloader with the skating androids and he can still get into recovery.
My QUESTION is: will the directions for the RUU work in returning the phone to stock (like odin does for my Vibrant) . I have been reading all the DINC threads and this seems the best bet.
Or is there something else wrong with this DINC I am not reading just yet?
Thanks,
Moe

It should, as long as you can get into HBOOT (skating androids), you should be able to reflash the RUU to get back to stock.
The ultimate get back to stock thread by Berzerker7 is the one you read...? I've referenced that more times than I can count, and have used it myself.

[Q] Unroot and S-ON

So, my main speaker blew and I'm going to take it in to have it warrantied. I have gotten to the point where I can get unrooted but I still have s-off or i can get to the point where i have s-on but rooted. How can I do both? I've searched so please don't flame.
I'm fairly certain that you need to grab one of the PB31IMG.zip files with the unrooted stock 2.1 floating around and install that. Then run the S-on tutorial. You should be good to go after that. For ****s and giggles once you do that you should be able to check for updates and the froyo update should be there.

Put s-on then unroot by RUU back to stock.

So, basically, turn s-on then find one of the "official" rb31img.zip files and flash that from the hboot right?
really dont even bother. just call customer service, since they are going to have to order it for you anyways. 18664065154, state you already took it to a technician and they reset and wiped handheld. They will send it to any address (not po box) you want. Keep it the way you have it.
ps and if they ask you why you didnt just get it replaced in store tell them you would have but you wanted to back up your stuff first.
Besides if you do a nandroid backup you can get it right where it was pre defect.
Should he be going back to 2.1 or run the leak for 2.2? Would it matter at this point? I was just thinking about this issue also.
customer service is just going to do a factory reboot and dump all memory anyways. just keep what he has on it. By the time it goes to replacement center hes probably going to upgrade to his next phone. Besides they have no ideas whos phone it is anyways.
I had to get a new phone. I left s-off and reverted back to non rooted 2.1, they don't look at stuff like that. At least they didn't for me.

Curious how you blew the speaker...seems to be a pretty common problem these days but I've never seen anyone say how they did it...

[Q] New to Verizon and the Beauty that is the Inc.

So, after finding some amazing Black Friday deals (Inc and Fascinate for free, no activation fee!) I finally decided to get off my 6 month expired t-mobile contract.
Already rooted my girlfriends Galaxy S Fascinate (wow easiest root i've done... also what a beautiful screen.)
Than came all of my confusion regarding my inc.
I upgraded to the latest November update (I know, bad Embrace!) than realized I could not easily root it. It is the SLCD version
After hunting around all of my favorite phone forums I have found a few downgrade guides, and a lot of warning about a screen brick on the SLCD inc.
I have also read that you can downgrade an SLCD with certain rom and recovery packages(amon_ra). But I can not seem to find any clear instructions or any confirmation of what roms work and what do not.
I'm slightly OCD and the VZ bloatware is murder.
I am aware that Unrevoked is working on a fix but I would love to root this thing asap.
Thanks XDA... Second post after many years of lurking.
TL;DR: SLCD Inc, Nov OTA, Need Root.
I would suggest trying to reflash an older 2.1 or 2.2 RUU then root that.
From what I understand using the downgrade methods out there will brick an SLCD screen.
Am I wrong? I would like to think that as long as I am flashing a stock rom it won't brick anything, but If I flash the wrong recovery I will brick it.
Does anyone have any experience downgrading the latest ota with an slcd inc?
I've never had a problem rooting a phone and I rooted at least 20, but for some reason this one scares me D:
I don't have an SLCD so you'll have to wait for somebody else to chime in. As far as I know, the RUU should be fine and flashable in even an unrooted stock HBOOT since it is signed.
I would just make sure that the RUU you are using came from an SLCD phone. An older 2.2 RUU should be fine. Perhaps there are no 2.1 RUUs for the SLCD? I don't really know. But flashing a stock ROM is not going to brick a phone if it came from that phone.
So I cheated.went to Verizon told them I was having random reboots after the latest update... replaces it
Now I'm rooted

Whatever works works, but in case anybody else is wondering, it has been confirmed that it does indeed work if you have the latest OTA to simply flash an older RUU through HBOOT, root it and turn S-OFF, and then you can flash whatever you want on it.

Incredible 2 (vivow) with hboot .98?

So I just got a droid incredible 2 and was planning to run revolutionary on it to get S-OFF and root it. I tried to get started but apparently I have HBOOT .98 rather than the supported .97.
Does anyone know if the latest OTA is to blame for this or something about new dinc2's?
Is there a way to downgrade HBOOTs?
No, you cannot downgrade, not without root anyway, which you cannot get since it's not supported yet (see here). No clue when it will be, and I doubt anyone else does either
Didn't this forum already go through this once already before the GB root was available? Feels like deja vu
Wow, that was quick... Verizon must've already had a batch of new Dinc2's already updated and shipped before they did the OTA update a few days ago... .98 Hboot is what is coming in the latest OTA updates.
Looking like a new wave of XtcClip buyers again till the Devs can achieve S-Off again for the .98 Hboot.
So not knowing anything about HBOOT, besides the version, I know the Desire S is supported on HBOOT version .98.
Are these completely different or the same across all HTC phones?
I don't know if it has been confirmed that HTC clip supports .98 hboot either. but hopefully it works!
Will the HBOOT .98 ever be unlocked? I just got the INC2 and it automatically installed when I left the house for a few minutes!!!! Is it possible someone will unlock this?? I got the phone mainly so I can OC it and put on custom roms, WTF!! (

Ill be getting my inc 2 tomorrow (replacement for inc 1) and it wouldn't surprise me if I'm stuck in the same dilemma. Disappointing but ill have to wait because my inc 1 isn't functioning anyway.
Looking forward to the battery life though anyway. I had to go to aosp for better battery life with dinc 1 anyway.

DInc II arrived on Friday.
I got soo lucky when I pushed customer service to give me an early upgrade.
It cost a total of $99.99 billed in Oct.
I worked real hard at rooting it, and come Monday I see it payed off.
I'm sure that it is only a matter of time that devs will discover, test, test and distribute the magic that they are soo good at.
I tried to donate to them but PayPal or AMEX was not an option and it has been so long that I looked at a money order that I don't think it would be worth the $0.60 USD + a postage stamp to mess with it.
Does any one know of a NORMAL way to donate to AlphaRevX or Revolutionary?
I plan on trying to get another DInc II in January (if it is still around).
me too
+1 stuck with S-ON and the 0.98.0000 HBOOT from OTA...
FYI
I just sent my Dinc2 in for warranty and the replacement has Hboot .97
now that XTC clips (everyone) are now unlimited, from beta to actual unlimited clips, so should try to find one.
Im pretty sure alpharev is working on s off for our 98 hboot they where asking for just that hboot or a link to the ota.... Pretty good sign

Workaround for 2.3.4?
Apologies if this post outs me as a total noob, but I'm only a week into my budding love affair with the DInc2 and Android, and I've already made one stupid misstep, as my phone came with HBOOT .97, and I foolishly took the OTA, realizing about a day later that yes, I would like to root this phone.
Being impatient, I was googling around to see if there were any solutions, when I found a link to a guide to unroot the Incredible 2 (which apparently I'm not allowed to link to yet). Basically, what this guide does is reflash the phone to 2.2 via an official signed update package (which should be able to be dropped on the SD card of the phone and flashed via the power/volume down method), gain temp root and manually reflash the HBOOT with .97 (via a dd command), and then upgrades (via another package to be flashed from the SD card, not OTA) to 2.3.3. At that point, I believe I could use the current version of revolutionary to gain S-Off, root the phone via the normal method, and be set to go.
Now, my question: is this going to result in a bricked device or a lot of wasted effort? Can the phone even take a signed update from the SD card without being S-Off? And will it trip me up when I try to flash to 2.2 because it's older than what's currently on the phone? Has anyone thought to try this? Waiting for Revolutionary to update is probably the smarter course of action, but I am one to push the limits of the technology around me, so unless someone out there knows that this won't work, I'll likely give it a go.
You will need to update to 2.3.3 leaked ruu to s-off anyways

[Q] n00b wants root - has latest ota.

I'm late on the bandwagon.. my first android phone, Evo4g running GB.
I've had it a few weeks now and also accepted the latest ota a week or two ago.
Hboot 2.16.0001, radio 2.15.00.0008, broadband 2.15.00.0808, kernel 2.6.35.10-g13578ee (or was it cc). Sw 4.53.651.1
what are my chances of rooting and putting on CM71? Base.d on the wiki, it looks like I'm out of luck, even with unrevoked. What about htcdev.net for obtaining s-off?
I'm also confused on how to get back to stock if I ever need to take the phone back (yes, I've read the readfirst doc), including getting rid of cwmod - back to 100% stock. Is there a way to backup my existing rom/kernel/?? and using that as opposed to an older img?
There's just too much info and old threads saying 'latest' to make it confusing. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
As far as what mod to use, I'm anticipating cm71 basically because it looks about the most full featured and stable. I have no idea what 'sense' is other than being htc's launcher. I prefer goLauncherEx so if there's something that sense provides that my underprivileged mind doesn't know about feel free to enlighten me.
thanks tons!!
I second this question, I was given a HTC Evo 4g as a replacement phone from sprint after having 3 Epic 4g's and 2 Nexus S 4g's in 7 months. I would like to root this because it has so many unwanted apps.
Noob wants root? Noob should do some searching first. Answers to literally every question up there are already asked and answered 500 times.

If you have 4.53.651.1, then UnrEVOked should work... not sure on 4.54.651.1, which was the latest OTA security update package, though.
Have you even tried UnrEVOked, yet? Or HTCDEV.com? I would imaging that there is always a way...
ok first of all there are a lot of people here willing to help, but first you need to help yourself. do the research, and find out what method will work to root your phone. then read it at least 3 times. then when you start rooting your phone and get stuck people will be more willing to help. i personally rooted my phone a while ago so i have no idea as to what method would even work for you. second make sure you do a nand back up from your recovery when you get one. that will at least take you back to your stock rom, and to get back to s-on well like i said do the research and read read read. good luck and happy flashing

With latest ota, use revolutionary like a couple has posted. Unrevoked will not work on the gingerbread firmwares for the EVO. You need revolutionary.

Thanks to all!
The issue was the overabundance of information and trying to weed out the non-current... not that I wasn't searching and reading.
I'm now up and going with synergy RLS1 (non-godmode)+chopsuey9.2.7+Amon RA Style Supersonic recovery 3.07.
Again, thanks for the assist!
right on glad you made it even if you were late to the party have fun and remember to make a back up and wipe wipe wipe happy flashing

Wiping the evo

I have a launch day evo. I rooted it about a month later. I've been flashing roms ever since. But the past 6 months or so it seems that with physical age that the phone just isn't as fast as it used to be. I used a co workers stock evo today and it was so fast already! To me it didn't need to be rooted.
Now whenever I flash roms I always do a full wipe. I'm not an app person (on Android at least.) and don't have a partitioned sd card (wouldn't know how to do that if I wanted to). I just re download the basics like pandora, xda, swiftkey etc.
Now for my question, is there a way to completely start over from a clean slate? Do I need to update certain root files? My phone just seems so sluggish with out me having anything on it. Oh and I'm on classic rom right now.

Yep. Easy. Run the RUU for your phone. That'll take it back to out of the box.
This link may be dated, but you're using a released ate EVO, so this should tell you everything
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...U2Mi1hNWU0LTRlNjEtYWMyOC1lZmU4ODg1ODc1ODI&ifq
BTW, you don't have to unroot first.
And then I can use one of the root methods to re root my phone?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
If your already s-off via unrevoked or revolutionary then you are already s-off. Just run a ruu to reset your software and start clean.
Not Sent
Since you probably didn't run unrevoked forever, running an RUU will probably put you s-on. I'd RUU to either the last FroYo release to run unrevoked or at least pre hboot 2.18 so that rooting is easier. Go for hboot 2.16 (GB) or 2.10 (FroYo).
Remember that your phone is older, so running an RUU might not make an incredible difference. If you've had your Evo that long then you probably could upgrade. Maybe you're holding out for the same reason I am - there's nothing that much better out yet.
I'd RUU version 2.16 or older, once phone is reset, reroot and enjoy.
But hardware is older, it maybe just getting worn out and may need a good ole fashioned replacement. These things arent designed to last forever../
