[Q] Sprint store repair - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going today to the Sprint store for a repair on my Evo. Do I need to unroot my phone? I'm paying for the repair since I don't have a warranty. What do you think? or should i just flash the stock Rom?

just flash a stock look, if the repair is software related then un-root

i would fro sure un-root it, most techs look and check if it has been rooted, and some will not work on it if it has been rooted. if it's softwear you will be waisting your $35 bucks if you take it in rooted

Yep. Unroot is always needed. Also take out your SD card. Some will check that for signs of rooting. Such as busybox.

Yeah, definitely wise to unroot it. Very easy and quick process to do it again once it's repaired anyway.
I'm sure glad there's a store near me where the tech has his phone rooted and also one roots other people's phones sometimes, so he's clearly cool with it!

I've had my phone repaired so many times with root. Replaced screen (2x), replaced speaker (2x), replaced camera lens (whole rear replacement) . But I always told em if they have to replace the whole damn thing or motherboard don't do it.
My splashscreen is black so as soon as they power on, they know it's root.
They just say 'at least make it look stock'. Which I always have.
No, I would not un-root for repair

I have never had a problem bring my phones in rooted either. I do flash a stock image though, like you said "at least make it look stock". I think it depends on the techs in the store. Most are cool and are rooted themselves!

Offical policy from Sprint, as of last week, is to work on rooted phones now. Does not matter if a device is rooted or not, continue work as you normally would and exchange if necessary.

It didn't matter beforehand. If the problem you're having is unrelated to root, such as hardware failure, then being rooted is a moot point.

Sprint techs weren't supposed to work on rooted device before. Lots did anyway. Last week they finally posted the offical methods and procedure document stating work on rooted devices is acceptable and continue as normal.

Did you get your screen replaced under regular warranty? I'd like to get mine replaced too since there are some uneven light spots, but I don't have the TEP plan.

Damn man, sorry so long. I never checked this thread back after posting.
I'm not sure, honestly. I have TEP, but don't know if it was necessary. In any case, it cost me nothing. First time they replaced it, they F'd it up, and the top 1/2' of the screen was non-responsive. when I broughtn it back in, I had them replace a bunch of the other hardware, as well. All free.
Where is this info about 'official policy', cuz that is awesome, that makes me love Sprint even more if true.

i would also like to see something official saying they work on rooted phones now. my evo overheats and restarts like crazy and i want to take it in but dont wanna have to re-root.

If it can at all be software related you def need to unroot. If your ROM/Kernel has even a remote chance of being the cause, I guarantee they will blame that.
It only takes like 10 min to unroot and less to root w/ unrevoked, esp if you already have the drivers.
I always unroot and take everything root related off my sd card (actually use a backup sd card), but they would catch me if they ever checked my purchased Market apps.

are you rooted or stock? this happened to me once, but it seems that i had a bad rom install. i was able to boot into recovery mode and just restore my nandroid backup of the previous rom. hope this helps.
if you're not even getting the charging light, you're most probably bricked. sorry man.
RIP to your Evo.
i downloaded the newest radio like 7.28,,,then was in rom manager and selected the radio to install from sd card,,,clicked ok...i looked away for maybe 10 seconds and then i saw an all gray screen...then it powered off...now i cant get it to turn on...yes i was rooted...

I know may sound stupid but remove battery for a minute or so and try again... was your batt low when u started the update? May just have to wait for a bit of charge b4 it will turn back on...not sure if this will help but hopefully it will. Best luck to ya.
no...battery was nearly fully charged...and battery has been out for about 20 minutes...im thinking its bricked...anyone got any ideas? also...what do can i say when i take it into sprint..
I Think its bricked :/
But about your phone if it is bricked, i would say i lost it and keep the battery and sd and pay insurance to get a new one.
its hundred bucks for a new one...i was installing a htc radio,,,thinking its covered under manufactured warranty,,,also got 2 batteries for 8 dollars so not a great deal lol

Yea its legal and your friend is probably a cool dude and don't care and will warranty them but unfortunately they don't have to honor the warranty if user changes / modifies software that was not ota or provided by HTC or Sprint. Use at your own risk.
I would'nt tell them you tried messing with the software. I would just say you woke up this morning tried to turn on the phone and it would not turn on. Tell them you turn your phone off every night when you go to bed, keep it simple.
It's void if they know about it. That's what they said on g4 atots when they did the special on jailbreaking and rooting. But will they know if it don't turn on? I assume they (htc) would just flash new software on it and give it out as refurbished.
alright thanks guys...but it was the htc software lol...new radio update...idk,,maybe that dont count since someone had to extract it.,..but thanks guys
Its a long shot but wait a couple days for the update to come out and tell them you tried to update and it did that......

Yes, it is legal via an exemption to the DMCA to root/jailbreak a phone - HOWEVER, if you break the phone by doing this, it isn't going to be covered under the warranty. The warranty still only covers normal use, and hacking, however legal, isn't normal use. Sorry dude. Magnusson Moss Warranty Act, look it up. Warranty doesn't cover when you break the thing yourself, only when a manufacturer / latent defect causes a failure.
It really depends on which sprint store you go to. I always go to a 3rd party Sprint repair shop near my house. I had a rooted hero to 2.1; when the evo came out i bought one and took the hero to the sprint shop to update to the official 2.1 version to give to my dad. When they tried updating it, the phone would never fully boot so they gave us a brand new one. yes they new it was rooted and had a custom rom, i had talked to them that day and before about it and they didnt care.
anyway, best of luck in this situation. If you dont have a cool sprints guys than i would take sprink's advice and say you woke up and it wouldnt turn on. if there is no damage, what can they do?
^ Good luck with that...legal or not, he screwed the phone up. Not a warranty issue...
Just seen this thread they might be able to help you out.

Same thing happened to me...
I tried to restart my Evo today and the same thing happened. I took it to the Sprint store and the tech there said that the power button actually failed, and that they had to ship me a replacement. From what he was saying this has happened on a few of the Evos.
Ouch brick. Bring it back play stupid. I bet the issue was using rom manager to flash a radio. A radio isnt a ROM its the MOST IMPORTANT piece of code the phone has and a sure fire way to brick it if you mess it up. I wouldnt use rom manager other than to boot into recovery

[Q] sprint store with a rooted evo

so I have the screen separation appearing on the bottom right corner of my screen. I am rooted with CM6 and wanted to know should I unroot and go back to stock before taking my phone to Sprint Service center? If so, where can I found the stock latest 2.2 to flash my phone back to stock?
Thanks for all advice and helps in advance!
I got the screen replaced on my Evo last week due to dust under the upper left corner. I took it in just like I use it...running Fresh Rom and the Riptide theme. They won't say anything about being rooted unless you are bringing the phone in for a problem that may be related to rooting. Screen seperation isn't that type of problem. They didn't even mention it.

Did they charge you?
If there is no physical damage (scratches, dents, water damage) it should be replaced for free.
While that guy was lucky, I would DEFINITELY unroot before taking it in. Rooting voids your entire warranty, and if they see it, even if your problem is hardware related and not software related, they can void the warranty and you will never get it fixed. Better safe than sorry.

Forgot I had a nandroid backup saved on my computer of my phone while it still had HTC rom.
Turned out my glass on the front panel was version 1 which means my complete phone has to be replaced.
So now I will have Android 2.2 with HTC rom and will have to learn to root that. It was so easy to root when I had 2.1 but I'm sure I will be able to handle it.
New Evo on Thursday!
Hope the newer ones are better!
Any opinions on the new Evos or any thing I should know about the newer ones?
I called my local Sprint repair center and asked what their policy was on rooted phones. Like the OP said they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues. If you are thinking about taking your phone in call the store and ask it won't hurt a bit. Now if you think they are going to replace your device save your self a trip and unroot first because the phone will need to be returned to stock before they will exchange it. The employees were actually impressed with what had been done with the phone and were very cool about it. Think about it they work on phones hopefully they like what they do, they think its cool too.

So, since I am getting a new phone out of this and my phone is still rooted, should I go back to completely stock?
All I did was flash back to my very first back up with HTC stock rom.
Will just having my Evo flashed to that first backup be enough when they ship off my phone after they hand me over my new one or should I fully restock my phone?
Does the phone go back to Sprint or HTC?
fully unroot and return the phone to stock it is easy to do its like 2 steps and takes only a few minutes.
people act like it is an hour long in depth process to root and unroot your phones its 5-10 minutes to do it and better not to take chances. All it takes is for one guy having a bad day to be a **** and make a note voiding warranty etc. Also in your case now is it really worth risking having to go home and unroot it then run back out to do the swap if they need you?
just unroot (not just flash stock htc actually unroot)

I've given back a few rooted phones for non-root related issues (speaker bad, kickstand won't stay in, LEDs don't work - 5 evos total so far) with no issues. Did the same with a lot of flashed TP's (12) and TP2's (2).
They can void your warranty for rooting it, sure, but they can't over the battery. Just tell him you don't know anything about it and you bought it that way on craigslist. That doesn't protect your warranty, but unless the guy has just decided to be a total d-bag they'll probably replace it anyway.
Also, the employees behind the counter are just people too. Being nice and not acting like you have a sense of self-entitlement to anything you want goes a long way. Believe me, I know first-hand. Customers' attitude factors in fairly heavily in how they get charged at the computer shop I work at because the techs set the prices on jobs.
Just be nice, don't be an a-hole yourself. If they say they won't fix it - fine. Say thanks anyway, be polite, and leave with it. Go home, unroot it, pick a different sprint store, and go complain about your original problem again. Five bucks says they'll fix it no questions asked.
It sounds like some of you need to read the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The very notion of "my entire warranty is voided because I'm rooted" is completely illegal and anyone that tries to tell you otherwise could find themselves in some legal hot water.

Not true, if you modify or alter a consumer product to a point that it performs significantly different than the manufacturer intended, the manufacturer is under no obligation to warranty it any longer.
I'm pretty sure this topic has been addressed many times and there is no set answer? I vaguely remember reading a legal article on it as well. It would be nice if there was an official statement made by both carriers and phone manufactures.

That is not entirely true. They can not void your warrenty for issues unrelated to rooting. If you brick your rom, sure that is legit for them to do that...but if my LCD fails, and is unrelated to the rooting, then no they can not. If they try to do that, you make sure you fight it.
I had a repair center in my town refuse to fix my speaker on my mogul with low volume problem, because I had a scratch on my battery door cover. He said my warrenty was void to to "Physical damage."
After a phone call to Sprint, and apparently other complaints that service center lost thier contract with Sprint. I ended up with a touch pro 2.... (Although I just wanted my mogul fixed , I was never happy with the TP2, and bought an EVO )

[Q] Fixing scratched screen instore - rooted

So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.
Sorry for the N00B question but how would I nandroid and unroot?
Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.

Not sure if I should Unroot my phone...a few other questions too

I'm planning to take my Evo into the Sprint store tomorrow in hopes to get a new/refurbed phone. Right now I am rooted and using CM7 so my main question is should I unroot and flash a stock rom or just flash a stock rom and keep it rooted?
On to my next question. I've never had an issue with my Evo where I had to take it into the Sprint store as of yet. I pay the $7 a month for the TEP so I'm wondering if I go and explain my issue if I'd be covered for a free replacement or not.
Here's what I have going on:
- I've dropped it a few times and it's separating a bit between the screen and the back of the phone. And it's pretty dinged up looking on the sides
- I think because of the separation/dropping my screen doesn't always display after it wakes....If I tap the phone near the power button the screen will come back usually. Otherwise I have to pull the battery and restart it
- The kickstand barely stays down. It's always popping up and is really annoying.
- Just about every call over 30 mins will have at least one dropped call...Very annoying
- Not all of my text messages get sent out....Sometimes people get them days later
Thoughts?
I would just flash a stock ROM.
Actually, everyone should do a nandroid of their phone @ Stock immediately after rooting, just to fall back on. I use mine for Profile updates, etc.
Either way, I doubt they ever check Hboot to see if you're S-On

Thanks for the reply.......what Stock Rom do you suggest? I haven't used a Sense Rom in a long time so what Rom is the closest to Stock as it gets?
There is a PC36IMG you can flash thru hboot that will completely unroot and return to stock, s-on, the whole works and it only takes like 5 min to do just incase they want to give you another phone and keep your broken one.
After that I would invest in an Otterbox lol.

ALWAYS a good idea to unroot and flash a stock rom before taking it to sprint. As we all know, rooting voids your warranty, and if they catch it, they might not fix your phone.
However, since you say you dropped your phone a lot, and the phone has physical damage, that also voids your warranty. There is a slim chance you might get a nice rep that will get you a refurb under warranty. But I can pretty much guarantee you they will say they wont fix a phone that has been dropped so much, in which case you will need to call Asurion and pay the 100 dollar deductible to get a refurb from them.

Unless they really examined my phone they probably wouldn't even know I've dropped it. There are some scratches on the side which could be looked at as normal wear and tear....The separation is visible if you pull on the phone too.
With that said what does the TEP actually cover? I don't want to go into the store and waste my time if they can't do much for me you know? haha

Insurance covers everything your warranty doesnt. The warranty covers manufacturer defects for one year. I.e. if your phone has no physical or water damage, it's usually a hardware defect and will be covered under the warranty. Insurance covers everything else, if you drop/break/lose/get stolen/brick by rooting, insurance will cover with the deductible.

[Q] UnRoot w/ Shattered Screen (No Display)

I just shattered and ruined the screen on my Evo 4G and I have no visual feedback from the screen, but the phone still boots up. I had it rooted (revolutionary) running CM7, and I want to turn S-ON and restore to stock before I take it in to Sprint. Any suggestions on what I should do?

you actually dont need to do that because sprint cant even tell that its rooted with the screen being shattered and all, but but if you need to watch this video on how to un-root the htc evo:

I can't use the screen, so I don't think that UnRoot method is possible because it looks like I need to set the phone to HTC Sync mode.
Any other suggestions anyone?
if theres no way for anybody to see the screen then sprint wont even know that its rooted, because when the get the phone, they look at it, then they check it the warnty is voided (in your case the cant tell) then they repair the phone and send it back, so you could just send it in as is
Yeah, they have to fix the screen to see if it's warranty is voided anyway, wouldn't it be odd if when they repaired it and booted up they discovered it was rooted, and then smashed your screen again and sent it back?
Ok, should I deal directly with the warranty company because they can send me one overnight, or should I take it to the sprint store and have them deal with it?
And also could someone post some screenshots of clockwork mod so I can try and blindly navigate through and make a nandroid?

You don't want to restore a nandroid from your old phone to your new phone. You can, but be sure to not restore wimax if it's a new phone. If you do without wimax then you might still have some problems.
If you used unrevoked to root it's pretty easy to unroot. You can always just flash a PC36IMG RUU and leave s-off so it's not obvious if they repair it. If you're going through insurance it'll be $100, so if you're paying that you don't need to unroot. Don't know if Sprint can or will do repairs or how much it costs.
If you have a broken screen, as long as debugging is on and it shows up under adb devices when using adb, try android screencast. Just Google it to find it or pm me for file.
Basically it will show you phones screen on your computer but debugging MUST be on and showing under adb devices for it to work.

Their policy is that if it's the end user's fault (you dropped it and broke the screen), they must charge the deductible. Pretty much all end user hardware problems trigger the 100 deductible.
Anyway, like others have said, they will receive the phone and replace it regardless because of the broken screen. However, if you're worried you could report it as lost (you still pay the 100 deductible) and wait for your replacement. I believe that may constitute as fraud though seeing as how you haven't lost your phone. The risk and choice falls on your hands.
Yea, if you are dealing with Asurion, no need to unroot, they don't care what you did to your phone, as long as you pay the deductible.
