EVO vs THUNDERBOLT - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys dont kno if this the right place to post this here but please understand Im really trying to help keep this forum organized. Last night I was out with a friend who just purchased the stock(not rooted) HTC Thunderbolt from Verizon. This phone as Im sure u kno has almost exactly the same features as the Evo. Both hav 1Ghz processors,runnin Andoid 2.2.Now my Evo on the other hand is rooted currently running Eternal Prophecy v4.9 with netarchy toastmod 4.3.4 kernal. It is overclocked to 1.152Ghz and runnin pretty smooth right now. Well heres the thing we did a Quadrant test on both devices at the exact same time and I was AMAZED at the speed of the Thunderbold. It had a score of 1850(stock,not rooted) and I had a 1350 on my rooted Evo and it was even overclocked! WOW I was speachless and actually felt dumb cuz I was bragging that mine was rooted with a custom ROM and it would b faster...lol. So what do u guys think bout that? I could just imagine what kind of benchmark scores the Thunderbolt would get if it was rooted and overclocked.

Evo = QSD8650 cpu
Thunderbolt = MSM8655 cpu
Not the same processor.
Evo = Adreno 200 gpu
Thunderbolt = Adreno 205 gpu
Not the same graphics processsor, either.
Evo = 512 MB RAM
Thunderbolt = 768 MB RAM
The Thunderbolt was released after the Evo and does have newer/better hardware in it. It can be overclocked to 2.0 from what I've seen and would really put a pounding on our Evos that way.

I'm aware of the increased speed of the Thunderbolt in comparison to the EVO 4G. There have been several articles about it, however, I've yet to play around with the Thunderbolt. I'm unaware of the software version or how it is optimized for increased speed. I thought it sported a 1.2 GHz processor, but again, I'm guessing. I'm not going to give up my EVO for the TB unless Sprint ticks me off and cause me to cancel my service. I'm waiting on a speedier processor and possibly a dual core device.

They may both have 1ghz processors, however the EVO has a 1st gen QSD8650 processor with the Adreno 200, the Tbolt has a 2nd gen MSM8655 with the adreno 205, the 2nd gen processor will perform alot quicker, and it has a slightly more powerful graphics processor, combined make the phone faster than the EVO on quadrant scores. However both phones are quick overall in terms of performance.
BUT, if your sooo stuck on quadrant scores, flash CM6 with the Snapdragon kernel, and overclock it, and you can show him your 2800 quadrant score.

Cm6 haha with snap kernel and Turbo enabled. Not really fair tho
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.

Thanks guys I appreciate the info. My brother is with Verizon and asked me wat phone to get and I did mention the Thunderbolt. It seems like a solid phone so I recommended it. Im a big fan of HTC so I think he wont go wrong there. I will try Cm6 but the only reason I havnt flashed any Cm Roms is cuz I want a more stable rom with everything working. I hav 4g in my area and I use my navigation often. Plus I really like have a 720p video recording handy. So if any Cm Rom can offer that I will give a shot!

[Q] Quadrant Standered

hello all,
i was just curious, how come my quadrant scores are always so low (mid 1100s)? i know that's not terribly low, but it is not close to where the "evo benchers" site reports that they are. currently im using the new htc kernal, only becuase i have only seen minimal performance changes with kings or netarchy.
thank you!
when Evo first came out they were only mid 500's...
depends on rom you are running also i believe, i only got 1100-1200 running Sense roms with stock HTC Kernel.
With CM Nightlies + Snap7.6 + Turbo Mode + 1.2ghz setCPU .... math, lol, i have gone as high as 2600 on quadrant.
It's just a basic benchmark and unless you have the paid version that breaks down your score it isn't really a good thing to go by.
1100 is pretty standard with the new HTC kernel and a sense rom. I run VaelPak, trimmed some extra fat, and get 1350 with stock kernel, 1500 with kingx #10. So ill stick with the stock kernel, better battery life imo.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
After alot of work and tweaking got my EVO to its highest quandrant yet..1585 and Linpack of 33.899 MFlops.
Always a great day when one has the full freedom to R&D something they purchased with their hard earned money without being shackled.
I use snap v7.6 w/turbo activated and just got 2483 , w/linpack 37.21

My scores are worse. I avg around 1000, usually 900something
Look a page or two down and the very helpful and patient peopele here gave my several suggestions. I haven't tried any of them yet, but I will when I have more time.
Ive gotten 2700's a few time with snap and Cyanogen 6.1 OC'd of course.

[Q] Over clocking on the g2

Are you guys planning to make kernal that runs from 1.6ghz to 2.0 ghz?
I managed to get 1.7GHz going but due to reasons of sanity/safety I will not personally be releasing a kernel that is capable of that. Another dev can use my source and easily modify it for those speeds.
Well hopefully one of u developer backup a file for us because i want to run faster then 1.4ghz.
I've been able to reach 1.4 GHz but is unstable for me. 1 GHz is fine and I think there's not much gain/benefit from it getting any faster. We'll end up comparing how things boot/run in miliseconds and then complain about it.

I guess but i want the speed so i can trash talk to iphone users some more.

No need for trash talking, let the numbers do the talking =D
Although there is an iphone fan boy in my Chemistry class that deserves it lol.
I doubt we'll see 2Ghz, but who am I to say we cant?

I notice the benefit from 1ghz to 1.4ghz for certain apps, especially emulators like psx4droid. There is a big difference in sound and overall smoothness.
Word u should go show off the speed that your phone is at. Dont tell him that your rooted lolz
I wouldnt be surprise that the g2 get that speed. Remember the old g1 got to 825mhz and original droid got up to 1.4 ghz from it 600mhz cortex processor.
It very possible that the g2 will be at least 1.7 to 1.8 ghz.

Evo overclocking questions, hopeing for some Dev input!

Hey all, I want to get some info on the limitations of our processor, mainly is their a ceiling on how high we can overclock our Evo's?
I am sure most of us here are familiar with the insanely fast 1.3ghz-1.8ghz(I think the top I read was 1.8ghz) speeds some newer phones are getting clocked to, the only thing that caught my eye about these speeds is that they are reported stable & usable. Coming from a Hero(a while ago) that I had to overclock to my Evo that is not really necessary to overclock was nice, BUT it would be awesome to have an Evo clocked at 1.5ghz-1.8ghz and stable as well as usable, is this even remotely doable? If not what is causing the limitation? Just curious
Edit: HAPPY THANKSGIVING, I am very thankful for my wife & kids as well as all you great guys and gals here at XDA!

It all depends on your phone....what may run on yours may send mine into random reboot...I found mine is stable at 1.13
You may want to raise the bar a little at a time to see what you can handle....be sure not to have it set on boot till you are sure your phone can handle it....

not exactly sure how it works on the phones but if its anything like a pc processor then it would take a kernel that can tweek voltages right like to get a 1.8 on our ever i would say it would need about a 3 step down uv but not sure if it would be stable heck at 3 step down uv it shouldn't boot unless its set oc'd on splash boot I'm pretty sure since our proc. are first gen snapdragons and the one's in the G2 and myTouch 4G are second with a smaller die ours won't be able to make it that far up with out major modification
Hmmm......so if I were to get off my ass and learn to compile a kernel I could at least attempt it, good info, thanks! At least now I have a place to start researching, I think I would be happy with a bump to an even 1.5ghz if it were stable, well if anyone else has more info I'm all ears!

I got mine at 1.15 anything past that seems unstable 1.2/1.25 reboots automatically (cm7 nightly 88)
The FroYo kernels come unlocked to 1190 I believe. When I was running FroYo I ran 1152 all the time. You don't really need to compile your own kernel unless you really want to. All of the kernels available here are unlocked except for the stock kernels. Also 1190 was about the limit for most EVOs.
I don't have an evo, but I do have a snapdragon, use quadrant to check scores after an overclock. 1190 isn't so good. Makes lower scores than the stock 1ghz. Fsb bottlenecks at that speed, but gets a boost at 1530. I've had my snapdragon around 1600 stable all day. Low battery life though.

G2 gets 3000 on Quadrant?!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839687
How can we get a kernel to compare to this?! Holy hell!
thats in-freaking-sane that thing isn't made to run those speeds can't wait for the first my G2 caught fire stories because of this i mean come on 1.9 ghz and no real cooling basically means i'm cooking my processor

I got 2800 on my EVO using CM6.1 RC1 with snap7.6 turbo kernel and thats running at 1.2 GHz. There is a new Snap kernel coming out too (Snap9). Quadrant should be close to or at 3000 with that new kernel.
1.9GHz is soooooooooo fast holy titties
how in the world do you overclock a cpu 225%?
clock speed means nothing, its just a number.
my x2 athlon at 3.2ghz wont compare to a current 2ghz, im happy for them they were able to clock it that high but benchmarks will show real world results
I couldnt be happier with my evo regardless of what others can do with their phones

I was informed at the store that the G2 is a next generation Snapdragon than what the EVO has and thus can be mad overclocked. However to achieve those speeds I promise they aren't running stock voltages. And yeah, they are close to cooking that baby.
Amazing that Amazon had the G2 for FREE with new service the other day.

It is easy to FaKE the scores lol!!!! Anyways it just a number and really dont mean much. I yet to really see a video of these number being legitament!!!
Fly like a G2
Holy BALLS. They OC'd that thing a whole 1.1Ghz... That's insane. I would NOT want to push that processor that hard though. That's reducing the life of the phone by a very significant amount, especially considering how these phones have such crap heat dissipation.

How, because the G2 is already underclocked down from 1.2GHz for battery saving reasons. Really only a 50% increase, which is still substantial as the EVO only overclocks 20%. You can't actually run it that high though, you can run it at around 1.45GHz, so its back at that 20%.
Also, my friend's HD2 hits 3500 in quadrant on the DesireHD rom. It hits 2000 underclocked at 500 MHz. He is running android off a class 6 card, but thats still some crazy scores. So our phones can hit that too if someone much smarter than me has some free time.

speed differences

Quick question, I have the epic touch and i love it and i know its 1.2ghz dual core and a friend of mine has the evo 3d (which he bought from me) lol and we're both rooted and over clocked and im at 1.4 and he's at 1.7 and on quadrant im beating his score.. He's lucky if he gets 3500 and im getting consistent 4600's all day.. Is it because sense is so big of a file that it slows ur phone down that much? Or is the Samsung just a faster phone period?
Quadrant doesnt really mean much, but this IS a faster phone. You already knew that though, thats why you sold your evo 3d and bought this, LOL.
Lol i guess ur right
