I would suggest that the Desire forum be combined with the Nexus One and called Bravo. They are the same device with a couple small variations. Other devices (Universal comes to mind) had hardware variants but were not broken out into 2 sub forums.
-Mc
It's a different phone though, it has Sense UI and more Ram.
It's like the G1 and HTC Magic being the same apart from the Magic having no keyboard... they still have different forums.
Sense UI is a software front end (and ALL variants have different software). And the Universal also has different versions, some with double the RAM of others. It is the same device, same platform, same hardware. Since you can install the Nexus One ROM on the Desire with NO porting, it's the same device. They also have identical hardware specs with the exception of a little more RAM to accommodate Sense and the optical joystick.
The Magic and G1 were completely different in the sense that one had a keyboard and one did not. If the Desire had a physical keyboard, I'd agree with you.
This will do nothing but segment development and resources.
But it is different hardware, considering the 64mb more ram and the missing second mic and the hard buttons instead of soft touch buttons and the optical mouse.
And the porting, i think there was some kind of changes, or why else is there already alpha version 7 when not cause of the bugs?
Is this enough different hardware to give it its own forum?
Also i´m quite sure, that rooting might be kind of harder than on the nexus, or does anybody know something about it yet?
so should the developer versions of Google phones get their own forum? HTC has slightly changed devices throughout it's history but we've never given them their own subforum.
e.g.
The HTC Kaiser has a front facing camera. AT&T's does not. Did the Tilt get it's own forum?
The original Universal had 64MB of RAM. The updated T-Mobile version has 128. Did it get it's own forum?
The HTC 620, 621, and 622 had differences, one didn't have WiFi, the others did.
The HTC Wizard is different enough between some versions that if you flash a ROM from one on to the other, it will kill it.
Some devices have Sense, some do not. Should they get their own forums? And what happens if the ones that didn't suddenly get SenseUI in an update. Do they lose their own forums?
Look, I don't own XDA and those that do can certainly do what they want. But I've gone through the FCC documents and looked at the ROMimages between the two. They are the same device with differences exactly like the examples I used above (and there are many more). Segmenting the two only hampers development efforts.

Not only that, but the S640. Telus only device, different chasis then those, CDMA, but some people were saying it should be lumped in with the other 6XX line.
I don't know about you but the HTC Sapphire Forums is littered between 32A and 32B ROMs.

Agreed... N1/Desire should be kept seperate!
Especially since they probaly do not share hboots and radios... So keeping the forums seperate minimizes risks of people flashing wrong stuff (as was seen on 32A/B quite often)

They DO share hboots and radios. They are the same phone. That's my point. Next, we'll start new sub forums for different case colors or carriers or logos or...
If they share radio/hboot they can flash the same ROMs without porting? If that is so, they should have the same section in my opinion.
The partition layouts are different on the devices. So no...you cant just take a rom from one and have it work straight away.
People have managed to get Desire Roms running on the n1, but they had to move system data to the data partition to do so.
The Desire is also unlikley to be rootable via unlocking the bootloader. If we put both devices in one section it would just confuse the nooblets.

Man if we used THAT as a compass around here, we'd be better off closing the site entirely. You can confuse them no matter what you do. Again, look at the Universal threads. Different RAM sizes but both versions lived happily ever after in the same forum. This site was NEVER intended for newbs. It shouldn't. If it did, most of us would leave.
How much do you guys wanna bet that many ROM's will be made in Nexus1 and Desire flavors. How many LITE ROMS have you seen on XDA? A lite ROM will work on either device without ANY porting or special mods. Why not have them in the same thread/forum?
I think if their roms are cross compatible, why not have the development sections mergered? They could have separate sections but once some1 clicks on development for N1 or Desire they are lead to the same page.
yes this could be the best as i see it. there are differences, radio buttons etc,,, there might be other differences for general question etc. but if the two of them have the same structure for roms then maedhros suggested the best, why not having them into one development section!
if any1 can proove for me that they share the exact same spl, radio and partition layout then im on it! as it could be the last extra rams that have been used for the /system partition else i think it is like mixing up da hero and sapphire as they are close, but biggest difference is software based
I agree that If the 2 are proved to be identical in development terms upon the desires release, then the forums could be merged, with perhaps a couple of stickies at the top explaining what you need to do to root the phone before you can use the roms. However this should not be done until this proven conclusively on a released phone.
IF roms that can be used on both devices using the same unlocking techniques become a reality, i will take this suggestion up with administration.
(But that won't be soon)

This is an absolute appalling comment. Condescending and unhelpful. Everyone has to start at some point and a vast silent majority of people visit the site to learn and root... You either took it wrong or are being a troll. XDA is a developers and hackers forum. We are all newbs at some point but this forum isn't designed for the newb. It's designed for the hacker/developer. I'm not ripping on newbs for being newbs. Hell, I'm a newb again as I just got my AT&T Nexus One yesterday - my first Android phone. But I'm reading and searching and won't have a reason to ask a question for quite some time. All of the information is already here on XDA. Newbs are welcome but we expect them to SEARCH and READ before asking a lot of questions. Some do, some don't. But if we dumbed down the forum, it would ruin it. There'd be so much crap to wade through and so many duplicate threads it'd be too time consuming to do so. THAT was my point.
Maybe we should have separate Desire forums for the silver version and a separate forum for the charcoal version. That should help, right? Because newbs who don't read are going to ask over and over if the ROM being discussed will work on their particular color of Desire. And that won't make anything confusing, right? Some ROMS posted in one forum and some posted in the other (just like the Desire vs. Nexus One). People will continually ask if the ROM will work on their device because it was in a different forum.
And FYI, you can harm the device just as easy using the correct ROM on the same device, or by running a simple command, or... If they read everything before they start, they will have no problems. If they don't read, well, we can't hold their hands.
This forum is catered to experienced hackers. We will help newbs through every part of every process, but this is still a forum for experienced hackers. If you don't like that, find a place that spoon feeds or does things for you. And if this place ever turns into a forum that spoon feeds and everyone asks to do things for them, most of us will surely leave. Then who will help them?
the question is why not?
Why is it important to you to keep them in one section? are you thinking about server space utilizing ?
I mean what is the harm of making them in separate sections (what is the harm to you)?
I was going through the threads and what really bugs me is the virgin mobile desire development is mixed up with the Europe version. I know the phones are identical but we have a different Hboot and Software. We should separate the two versions in two different threads making it easier for users to follow the development phase.
Would make a lot of sense, however I feel like there's not enough development on this device to even bother with the separation. Plus I feel like in the future, developers who might want to make stuff for the 816 would go for the other (dual sim) versions, so the VM one would either get way less development, or all its development a lot later, when our favorite devs were asked to port it to the VM version.
I agree with this as well. Merging the types has caused irreversible bricks for people who aren't savvy in these things especially if they haven't backed up their original software via Nandroid. Now you may think just download an RUU but those are not available for the Virgin Mobile model and finding and using someone else's nandroid isn't a simple drag and drop process including the fact that they can't boot the system. They would indeed have to use for example Cyanogenmod but then people aren't even sure if its possible to restore an original backup from Cyanogen.
On top of that there is a custom kernel but no one has uploaded an original for those who want to go back to stock for squaretrade insurance purposes maybe? I would possibly hear, this sounds like a "you" problem but regardless of the device they were produced and people do use them and some people do like to mod them to the fullest extent to call it "theirs". You might say just learn but it isn't that simple for everyone. What takes an expert a few minutes/hours to arrange may take a new person months or years and with risk that they cannot restore the device in the case of a bad flash. Just saying to consider everyone not just the general population. Minorities in society deserve a chance no?
Me? Saying; I am one of these people but I can understand the difficulty when navigating through something and when their using purely codenames such as a5_dug it makes it no simpler.
One reason for this phone.
Its available in payments on the shopping websites. 199 and 6 months to pay it off with no credit check? Yes please.

From March 2014 to now. Rarely spoken of out of 100's of Androids. Because of the price now development is increasing. Your really telling me separating the two forums would cost you enough time to not do it? There are phones that have no development on here and are completely sectioned out amazingly.

Funny!!!
Talk @ confusion, I saw this in the CM11 thread?
"One question; how the F*** for the life of day and night do you restore this device back to stock without an official RUU for Virgin Mobile? "
Just messin w/ ya, splitting development would not be a good idea IMHO, more of these phones were sold for months outside of US.
VM owners are probably a small minority, so most devs probably wouldn't be bothered with our ROM, give it time, if there's market penetration, we could think @ a split from WW dev.
(as it is, there isn't much going on in dev right now anyway, I'm thankful for the CM11 port we have from Grarak & v_superuser)
Truth be told, things would be easier for us if there was a separate sub forum but it wouldn't favor us as far as development goes.
To the best of my knowledge there are a handful of devs who work with VM phones. I'm not exactly sure if any of them have jumped on the 816.
Until that happens I think it's in our best interest to hang out and wait. Right now we're dependent on those that have had the phone for about 6 months longer than we have..
v_superuser and Garak have posted their CM11 in a cl;ear enough way that DLing and running that rom should be pretty straightforward. If any future roms are posted in the same way there should be no confusion.
That being said, I can see a VM specific subforum being helpful for people who may be starting out and aren't sure about general stuff relating to VM bloatware etc.

Lol . I bricked this phone 4 times going back and forth; from the Stock ROM, to the Chinese sort of stock ROM, to Cyanogen. Done erased my /sdcard to where it wasn't mountable and brought it back with Cyanogen and sideload. (Luckily, the bootloader wasn't affected by the amount of **** I threw at it.) Tested 3 different recoveries only to find out the old version from the CM11 post was the only one that really worked the properly.
I was able to start it back up and continue to put the backup onto the internal storage since I didn't have an external SD on hand; BUT then I found out that the backup was 1.96 GBs and needed to be in the /data/media/clockworkmod/backup section of the device which was inaccessible via normal USB methods since your stuck in /data/media/0 and is considered basically a completely different partition. This phone has 8GB internal and uses 4.xxGB with its normal software when installed (yes even with Cyan) then I just put a 1.96 GB file so it was basically stopping me from copying the whole folder which was just ever so slightly annoying since I had to use ES file explorer, make a new folder with the same name, then; one by one Cut and Paste each file into the new folder in the /backup folder. This might seem like a simple process but with absolutely no guides out there for a guideline this really sucked. It's basically like; if you have this device then you know how to flash/root/etc as the norm. Trial and error. -_-
Then after looking around and seeing that VM had 55$ for their plan. I saw that Straight Talk was able to accept the MEID of this VM device without a hitch, but then I looked into different carriers for even better alternatives and saw that Ringplus had $17.99 for Unlimited Talk/Text/400MB 3G/4GLTE. I thought **** why not? Turns out Ringplus doesn't accept VM devices. (Sucks)
SO then I decided to "spoof" the IMEI/MEID/ESN with DFS/QPST (Experience) and I was able to get the MEID/ESN to change and get EvDo Rev.A service but to no avail with LTE since the IMEI is "unspoofable" without S-Off. I thought well why not $17.99 for unlimited T&T w/data? Signed up with my new "S3". lmfao
Purpose of this post?
There was at least 3-10 topics I could cover for VM Desire devices now.

Maybe this is a dumb question but if the VM version isn't capable of dual numbers or being ported or used anywhere else why does VM advertise this as dual sim on their site as part of the device name? What would be the point of the false advertising.

I just checked out the VMUSA site and couldn't find anything about dual sim. I did however see "Dual Mode" used for the phone. Dual mode is just a term to say that the phone uses both CDMA and GSM. CDMA for 3G and GSM for LTE.
An answer could be to have a thread under "Desire 816 General" called "Virgin Mobile Issues" or something similar. I'm guessing there could be enough traffic to keep it on the first page for a while. For example I'm still curious exactly how the -chl is best classified. Is this hybrid best thought of as a single or dual sim? Will getting s-off allow the phone (with some rom work) to be used by another carrier? Having all these VM specific questions and answers in one place would be a plus and it shouldn't interfere with the Q&A being done on the true dev work here in other threads.
New to this device and, for the 1st time I find myself in XDA with a forum with all the different Verizon, AT&T and so on version of my device (previously had only devices that would not show these options).
Now I know this question may sound sort of idiotic, but one has to learn somehow: All the different roms listed in the specific carriers areas would not work in the "standard" international version of this device?
I ask this because, compared to most other devices I see that the choice of roms is very, very limited. So i thought that, being able to choose also from the carrier-specific areas, one would have more choice.
Thanks

I'm sure someone will be able to provide a more detailed and accurate explanation, but generally you don't want to flash anything not specifically made for your device. At the least you could have connectivity issues, at worst, a bootloop and/or brick depending on the situation.
There are some instances where flashing other variants software is OK, but its not the norm, and should not be assumed you can flash any, just because its OK to flash one.
Hopefully someone will jump in and point out which ones if any are OK for you to use.

I should have probably added that the question is inherently stupid, because, if it were easy or even simply not "dangerous", the sections would not be separated! But it is always better to ask, even if sometimes you risk of appearing very stupid! Sometimes, by simply asking though I found out pretty surprising things

I started with iPhone many moons ago, then transitioned to Android / Samsung back around the S3 days. Been with Sammy ever since, but they are starting to get like Apple in that they are VERY unfriendly to the mod community and they go to great lengths to stop it. They are also killing their phones with Bloatware.
I am toying with going to either the M8 or M9 with my next upgrade (coming from Galaxy S5). Does HTC tend to have a major security war with their users or are they a little more lax? Does rooting void their warranty like it does with Sammy?
Thanks in advance.

Get the HTC M9. The M8 is really good, but the M9 fixes just about all of the M8 shortcomings. For unlocking and rooting, HTC is really simple and HTC facilitates the process. You just create an account on htcdev.com and submit a request for an unlock token. A few minutes later HTC sends you an email with the unlock token. Once you have that, you connect your phone to your computer and unlock but using fastboot commands. Once unlocked, you can install a custom recovery, again using fastboot commands, then just enter custom recovery (TWRP), go to the twrp reboot menu and select reboot, then twrp will say hey, you're not rooted, do you want to flash SuperSU and you swipe to flash it. Phone will boot into OS, you open the SuperSU apk and follow some screen prompts and one more reboot and your good to go.
That's it.
Supposedly, simply unlocking no longer voids your warranty, but if it appears that the phone broke because of running a custom rom (like, it overheated and the insides melted), they likely will not void the warranty.
Another reason you should get the M9...in the states, we get uh oh protection. So...you can do anything to your phone...drop it in the toilet, run over it with the car, whatever, and they will replace it, for free, for 1 year (including free overnight shipping of the new phone to you, then you send the broken one back)...so, you really don't need to put this beautiful phone in a case until either the year is up, or you get your second one. Also, if you don't use the uh oh protection, HTC gives you $100 off your next HTC phone. It's a pretty sweet deal.
I agree with the above post. My m9 has been awesome! I recently came from an s3 that had a locked bootloader thanks to Verizon and so I got the dev edition. So far I have flash at least 4 different firmwares and have tried almost every rom that's available. It's extremely easy to do once you get s-off. It will be a little bit of a learning curve so make sure to read the instructions carefully and read down the threads in order to anticipate anything that may go wrong.

If you come from flashing Sammy roms like I did, then I suggest you think really carefully before buying the M9. I dont hate my M9 as much as when I first bought it, but in hindsight I perhaps should have stuck with sammy. Flashing custom roms and updating firmware on Sammy is easy compared with htc M9 , and the M9 threads are alot more 'quiet' then Sammy S4 , S5 or note4 threads . Also you will find ALOT of conflicting/confusing instructions for M9, especially if you come from Sammy roms.
Here are some other posts worth reading before you decide buy M9 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60244822
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60245457
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=61298935

With htc you have worry about S-on S-off then CID and supercid, then lock bootloader to run RUU or unlock to run 0PAIMG.zip files (which they call RUUs but they are different to RUU.exe files of course, but still called RUUs), must use smaller than 32Gb FAT32 sd card to update your firmware using sd card method, use htc_fastboot or fastboot etc etc. So confusing if you are from Sammy.
Then if someone, not new to flashing, asks a question and they get "search its been answered many times!' When actually the instructions can sometimes be slightly different from one thread to another , and some threads , not all, simply do not explain clearly why you need to do this or that, and/or give conflicting or incomplete instructions. You will have much less headache with Sammy devices. Also M9 u need to go back to stock to get an OTAs (if you are S-on). So all I am saying is read the M9 threads first, and get a feel if you want to take the dive. But if you want a challenge after (easy) customizing, Sammy roms, then M9 is definitely a good choice. Also there is NO cyanogen for M9 at the moment. But seems there some gr8 roms like Viper, Maximus, Insertcoin and Android Revolution..(.but you gotta make sure your M9s firmware MATCHES the roms firmware before even thinking about flashing them.) Just my two cents worth.
It is not really that hard when you know what you are doing. It is gonna be different with each device. You are just accustomed to doing it a certain way. It is always best to follow the golden rule here in XDA. Search first, read read read, and then ask questions. You also have to remember the M9 is a 64 bit phone, so there will be new challenges.

sure. of course its not rocket science. Ya Everyone knows "Search first, read read read, and then ask questions" but the problem is conflicting info. and Just that the Sammy threads' instructions IMO generally were ALOT clearer and less conflicting and confusing info. and its not just me, I noticed alot of other users had noted same experience in the HTC M9 threads. Its no wonder people keep asking same questions still. IMO If the OP's of alot of the threads were "clearer" and more" complete" in their first instructions, I am sure we would have alot less people in confusion asking things like "help me/ hold my hand to restore to stock/I followed instructions but got error still why". And the biggest problem is the fact that the M9 was a disaster for htc. so as a result, the M9 threads are much more quiet, fewer users, and less active than Sammy threads. My only hope is with the second-hand market forming in the next 6 months, that the M9 threads will pick up, hence more custom roms and updates, when people buy it , when its cheaper.
Samsung is a much bigger and more known company. It's phone sales are huge compared to HTC and that will relate to much more active forums. I understand what you are saying, but like I said every device will be different. When I had my Nexus 4, rooting and flashing roms was a piece.of cake. I would just be careful about over complaining. Nobody here is obligated to help anyone. Be nice and someone will eventually come along with the needed help.
Ive recently done the same. been with sammy for about 4 years, now ive picked the HTC... why? Theyre much more in touch with their users demands. Sure the processes for unlocking / rooting / s-off are a lot different and require you to do some work, but once you get to grips with it it's easy enough and makes you feel more in touch with those sort of processes on your phone.
Also to address the issue mentioned above, the sammy s4 etc have been out a lot longer than the m9 which has only been out a few months so of course it will be quiter in here to start with. *fingers crossed* some more devs will pop up and fill our lives with joy.
The only thing i'm worried about with my recent upgrade to htc m9(literally a few days ago) is that within the year it is going to be outdated by a new device but such is life when you buy in to a 2 year contract lol.
Have faith.
As mentioned above also, at first I was quite daunted by the processes of rooting etc for the HTC and was unsure i'd made the right choice. I considered falling back to sammy but even after this last couple of days i've thought to myself I have made the right choice.
Thanks for all the helpful comments. I am a voracious reader, and I would never attempt to do any type of upgrade without quite a bit of research first. I pretty much have my mind made up on the M9, but AT&T has jacked up their upgrade process. This is a company phone & we are on a legacy plan. Until my boss & I get all that worked out with AT&T, I'll be using my trusty S5. AT&T really ticked me off yesterday when I was in the store, so much that we might even look at an alternate carrier.
Thanks again for the help.

Unsolicited advice, if you're going to root and install custom rom and leaked updates, you're better off sticking with a GSM carrier (AT&T or T-Mobile) over Sprint or Verizon. Sprint and Verizon users almost always have to wait for carrier release to get updates. AT&T works with all of the international updates that are released. T-Mobile does too, but they also offer Wi-Fi calling which may not always work with international roms and firmware. just my .02

You missed the point and Who's over complaining? Obviously no one is obligated to help here or any other thread on xda. My point was if someone wanted to buy an M9 he/she should think carefully before taking the 'dive', and it is a fact the M9 threads are much quieter, right? and did you read the posts the urls I posted above? if you look at the urls i posted previous post you will see alot of other users were confused. I wonder why? They had 'searched and searched' but were still confused, I wonder why?. My question was , why do some threads have to make something so simple sound so complex.? After reading hundreds of post from back to front, I realized that had some posts or more detail/explanation been added to the OP of some threads, quite alot of the confusion could have bee avoided in first place, in M9 threads generally. That was the main difference I observed between sammy threads and M9 threads. I dont hate my M9,but I expected alot more from it. The screen display is lacklustre, some devices have a dead pixel problem, and flashing firmware is a nightmare for some experienced sammy users from what I hv read so far, but yes the sound is excellent on m9 and speed is fast (i know S6 has much higher antutu score but I dont believe those scores completely). but for now I do hope that there will be gradual improvement for M9 as more people get involved when the device becomes cheaper. I Just felt need to point out to any sammy user, think very carefully before you switch to htc M9 , if they want go down the customization route. If you dont want pull your hair out then stick with sammy, but if you are up for a challenge and some headaches in the beginning, definitely go for M9. Because it can only get better.

I kind of understand what you're saying, but I think the reason a lot of advice seems contradictory is because little variables like S-off/on, region, carrier, GSM/CDMA, etc make a difference in the steps you have to take. Also, in a lot of those posts you linked to they were trying to accomplish different things. For example, many people want to upgrade firmware without being S-off and there are several different ways to accomplish this and at the same time it may not be possible at all for that user (because it depends on their carrier/region).
Many of us who do like to help people find that it's like pulling teeth sometimes to get enough information to even offer a suggestion to people. It really shouldn't be that hard to say 1) exactly what you'd like to accomplish and 2) exactly what steps you've already taken. Finally, and I highly doubt this is unique to the M9 forum, but it's extremely frustrating when either someone just asked the same question a few posts back, or the answer is clearly spelled out in the op.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this. Wondering Perhaps the M9 threads should be divided into sections for this or that carrier 'only'? Eg Verizon users only , international users only etc ..would it work? It might repeat some instructions , but it would make it more clear for people and save alot of the confusion or contradictions we see? Ie this is your device and you can do this and you cant do this, and this way is better than that way because you are xxx carrier, and this is the reason. I am just thinking especially of the new M9 users to come. Is there a way to Make it simple and clear. As you and others have said, its not difficult once you know how. And at same time , we can try to not sounding over complicated or confusing to them....some guys are really very helpful in the M9 threads, as example , after I got a reply I thought, this is so simple(!), why was it made to sound so complicated in first place? Or I thought why didnt someone put that in the OP? Would have saved alot of people alot of time. But I guess M9 is new, threads are relatively new, I get that , and I am sure we will see more and more interest in M9 , and hence more activity in the threads, as it picks up momentum...

Is there an International section? And if there are already different sections for different US carriers , I wonder why are all those confused guys asking in the general forum?

Probably because there is more activity here in the unbranded forum. There are differences with how the various branded phones need to be rooted and roms flashed. Not all the instructions here will work unless you properly debrand/convert the phone.

Which explains some of the confusion..
Just curious, once the US users from AT&T or whatever have debranded to say developer WWE europe .401 firmware, how is the modem/radio/baseband after? Reception and wifi no problems at all or do they have to flash their local carrier radio again to get good signal? (I ask because my S4 was on Poland or German firmware i think but it still worked great in Asia).
For me, HTC are the pinnacle of devices when you plan to root, believe me its a walk in the park, not only that but the community is friendlier, larger and the level of development and developers is second to none. Take a look at my SIG to see the phones I've had, don't get me wrong the s5 is a special device and I used it underwater for many hours and I loved it but I've always missed HTC when I've been away from it, even the note 4 wasn't enough to keep me away..
The choice at the end of the day is yours..for me there is no choice, the m9 is by far and away the best device there is right now, not without faults but that just adds to its character.

Some users have reported the need to flash the radio that comes with the stock firmware. I believe it could be location specific. Best thing to do is if works, don't try to fix it.

I get your point. Mayb alot of us were spoilt with odin and ease of flashing and customizing sammy devices. My S4 was on CM12.1 lollipop 5.1.1 ages ago , and I didnt need do go back to stock to any 'update firmware' at all when i went from previous lollipop to 5.1.1 so when I got my m9 i was like wtf? ( I thought to myself: Why Gotta go back to stock to take update and then all this s-on s-off cid supercid silly stuff. ) LOL. It didnt help that i had to factory reset my phone 6 times in first few days to get everything working. Mayb i was unlucky as i even had the annoying dead pixel problem in m9. I believe a few other users had same problems. I am sure my m9 gonna get better. I was close to selling it right away, but will stick with it for now. You guys have convinced me its not as bad as it seems. As i said, it can only get better as more users buy the m9 (when it becomes cheaper).
Btw how does the note4 compare with m9 speed wise? Just asking.
Well this post is regarding refurbished htc m8:
yesterday i bought my 2nd m8 from online...seller used it 3-4 months..it was quite new so there was very chance of being refurbished..the written marks on backside revealed its sprint variant..bt inside it was global..as it was quite ok i bought it..now what confused me was is it a global motherboard inside sprint casing or real sprint with modified rom? It was running kitkat 4.4.4 with no update as its common for refurbished..so i went through xda and found out a way..set was with s off and super cid..so couldnt recognise carrier from cid..then i checked mid and it revealed t mobile..so actually it was a tmob motherboard inside sprint casing..luckily tmob is gsm supported..so i changed the mid to global/europe..unlocked bootloader...downloaded stock rom and flashed from external sd with hboot..then i got all official updates from htc and my set is running marshmallow fluently..no network issue..everythinfmg fine nd battery backup increased..thats all..everything is available in xda..i think this post will be helpful for my bangladeshi brothers specially as lots of refurbished htc are sold here...thanx
Your post has many poorly based assumptions, and short on details, so I don't see how this can help anyone much at all. I appreciate the fact you are trying to convey some useful information to others. But the information is your post is missing a number of critical facts, and has some incompletely logic.
MID and CID are easily modified. You can't reliably assume the version (from the factory) by looking at the MID (although it can be a clue, along with looking at other things). Especially, if you know the phone has been modified (and possibly even had the back cover replaced) you need to look at more than the MID. You need to also look at the product ID (which I've never seen modified). The product ID for T-Mob (and a number of other "GSM" variants is m8_ul. Sprint would be m8_whl.
In your case, it looks like you had an incorrect or incomplete path of logic, and just got lucky. Others reading your post may not be so lucky. In fact, the info given in your post can even be dangerous. If someone with a Sprint variant were to flash a GSM RUU or firmware (with modified CID) this can result in a permanent radio brick.
The best way for an inexperienced user seeking to update or "debrand" a used/refurbished M8; is to do fastboot getvar all, and post the results (deleting IMEI and serial number before posting). That way, experienced "helpers" here can examine the device details, and provide the most correct, and safest way to proceed.
Additionally, if your intent is to help others, the best way to do so is to provide specific details as to what exact files you used (file names, links) and what guides or other threads you used (again, with links). Otherwise, its just a bunch of vague statements, which really don't add any value to what is already posted and available on this forum. Plus, you should really take the time to type proper sentences and paragraphs, with correct punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. A post written like a Twitter post just makes it hard to read, and hard to follow. Which pretty much defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
This advice may sounds harsh. But I'm just speaking constructively here. If your intent is to continue contribute to XDA, we welcome that. But the best way for you to contribute, is to have your facts straight, and post in a cohesive, understandable, and readable manner.
Sorry it was my mistake...first of all thaks alot for your valuable advice..i tried the ways in my way with taking lots of risk..i dont want anyone to risk there mobile..i just wanted to share my experience...infact its my first post...sorry for my fault..bt my logic was usually sprint set doesnt support 3g band in my country..as my previous one was sprint m8..in my recent m8 network was ok..so i guessed it may be a gsm set..that encouraged me of taking risk..and i also found a link in xda where from imei carrier branding could be identified..and there i found its mentioning tmobile..bt to avoid risk i changed the mid to global..though it was risky i know..i made this post just to give a clue if anyone ever suffers from updating there refurbished m8..and sorry for my language...due to busy life i thought it will be better to write in short rather not writing it..and thaks alot for your correction..i am really honored..i thought my post may go unnoticed!!

You've posted the same questions to 5 or 6 different threads now. This is against forum rules, as it clutters up the forum, and just confuses those trying to help you. It won't get you an answer any faster. Just stick to one thread.
