Rooting method for new OTA upgraded Desire Z? anyone? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Its been a while now......... but has anyone come up with the method/procedure for the rooting of Desire Z with the latest OTA update? Bought mine approx 2 weeks ago and it is 1.82.709.1, have read thru the forum and seems downgrade to 1.34 is the only method for rooting and S-Off! However, I figure since many customs ROMs' (CyanogenMod-7,Virtuous)by developers are already rooted, why is it that no one has yet develop a rooting procedure?

[Q] Rooting after update

Hi all,
I gather the newly issued HTC update will prevent rooting via any "cage" derived exploit. Is there a procedure to downgrade to a rootable ROM (will some of the posted RRU's work)?
I ask because I should be getting an HD in January and am concerned it could come pre-loaded with the update.

Not yet. In 1-2 weeks maybe
So the RUUs in the Files thread won't downgrade the kernel? (Which I assume is where the problem lies)

[Q] Rooting Desire Z Asia model

Hi, just joined as a new member after seeing the developer thread on rooting the Desire Z.
I saw in the beginning of that thread that rooting isn't valid for Asia models of the Desire Z and wanted to confirm whether or not that's true?
I live in HK and got my Desire Z in Mong Kok at one of those phone shops. I believe I have the Taiwanese official version installed for it.
Is it alright for me to go forward with rooting?
Thanks!
I have an Asian model as well. May I know which version you have? Mine is 1.34.707.5. I haven't done a permanent root yet, but I have successfully temp-rooted my DZ using the latest VISIONary app.
As far as I know, you can do root your phone. The only reason that's holding me back is I cannot find a "safety net" if ever something goes wrong when I flash custom ROMs or I discover a factory defect since I cannot find a RUU with the same version that I am running.
Thanks for your feedback. Mine is 1.34.709.5
I don't have any plans to flash any ROMs. Do you think its alright to go ahead and use visionary to do this?
Also whats the difference between permanent root vs temp root?
Thanks!
I guess it is fairly safe to temp root using visionary. I wouldn't suggest perm rooting using it though, as there have been times it has caused some "problems".
The difference between the two types is root is lost upon reboot for temp root. So basically, you have to temp root every time you reboot your phone.

Thanks i'll try it out and let you know how it goes.
Much appreciated.

[Q] Rooting Desire Z 2.42.405.2 without downgrade?

A mate of mine has a Desire Z running 1.42.405.2 software and would like my help in rooting it. But is that even possible at present without downgrading to froyo?
At the moment? No it's not, but I am sure there will be in the future. The downgrade is painless though. If you need help with rooting or the downgrade you can go to webchat.freenode.net and the channel is #g2root
Don't worry about being stuck on Froyo, if that is the reason for hesitation on rooting. After root, you can always flash a pre-rooted version of the Sense Gingerbread ROM, posted in Development. There is a version that is purely stock, or you can flash a more custom ROM like Virtuous, which is the GB update plus some nice modifications and optimizations.
I wouldn't hold my breath on waiting for a non-downgrade root method. The hole that allowed Visionary, rage and gfree to obtain root was closed by HTC last December. And nobody has found a new method since. But I don't know if anyone is actively working on a new exploit at present. So in theory, somebody can find a new method anytime. But its been 8 months now.

[Q] Rooting HTC Desire Z Gingerbread 2.3.4?

Hello XDA Community,
I am fairly new to the concept of rooting an android device and I have no idea where to start. I understand what rooting is and what it will allow me to do, but I just have no idea how to get started
I was looking around the forums and reading different topics on how to root the HTC Desire Z (or my G2 for short), but a lot of the topics take me to links to other topics, which have links to other topics which have a lot of technical things that are not friendly to a first time rooter (What is S-OFF/S-ON?? Why would I need to do that and how??).
I recently allowed my G2/HTC Desire Z to upgrade to the new Gingerbread 2.3.4, and to my understanding, there is no simple way to get this rooted. After reading the topics, I do see that there is a way around it, but I'm just at a loss as to where to start.
Is there anybody out there that is willing to help me out? If so, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

The above linked method will work for you also. You'll have to downgrade first, then root, then flash a pre-rooted OTA build. That'll put you back to where you are now, but with root access.
I've just rooted HTC Desire Z - Android 2.3.3
1. You have to downgrade firmware 2.x to 1.3.4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
2. And then following these instruction in ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD )
3. Done
have any of you guys tried the gingerbreak?
from what i read its able to root any gingerbread device.
i cant post links as this is my second post. but im sure if you google it, you should find it.
i read under the techofweb result.
not sure if it works, i never tried it. Rooting my HTC desire Z voids my warranty
but if you guys out there try it, let me know if its successful.
thanks in advance.

Gingerbreak doesn't work on the G2 / DZ. And doesn't work on many devices.

What we're actually doing now to root is this :
2.3.4, temp rooting 2.3.4, downgrade to OTA 2.1, root that, flash new ROM.
You forgot the last step *PROFIT!* lol all kidding aside for the one who asked the pre-rooted ota is in the development section. don't forget to flash recovery and get titanium backup and all that good stuff first...well second after temproot if you go that method. DO NOT USE VISIONARY!
Also remember to do a nandroid backup of your 2.1 ROM if for some reason you want to go back to stock, or sending your phone in for warranty.

Hello everyone, I am using HTC-Desire Z with the android version 2.3.3
I really want to upgrade my phone to ICS. In case of doing the root, i want to know that, if i root my phone will it downgrade first to the Froyo??? If it will then can i upgrade to the ICS using the custom ROM process???
If anyone knows or understands my problems please provide me a solution and that will be appreciated..
Thank You
Zawad
Yes search the threads and follow the wiki. The only safe way to root is to downgrade first using the method outlined in the wiki. The only way (for now and probably forever) to get ics on a desire z or g2 is to root

[Q] HTC Desire Z will not update to 2.3.3

Hello,
After my first HTC Desire Z broke i got a new one (second hand) yesterday. The phone was not used for a long time and still was running Android 2.2, for some reason i do not get the over-the-air update to 2.3.3 it simply tells me there are no updates available. After browsing some forums i see many links to htcdev.com where the update should be available for download... well it is not there anymore..
Has/had anyone the same problem and does anyone know how i can get my phone to Android 2.3.3?
Thanks in advance!
tijn
Current versions:
Android 2.2
Build: 1.34.405.5
I think it's better to root the phone, not update, and u don't have to downgrade for rooting. Think about root instead
Thanks for your quick reply, i thought about rooting the phone but i'd rather have it with the stock firmware. I'm affraid i might break it somehow.
So my original question still stands
