Hi, just joined as a new member after seeing the developer thread on rooting the Desire Z.
I saw in the beginning of that thread that rooting isn't valid for Asia models of the Desire Z and wanted to confirm whether or not that's true?
I live in HK and got my Desire Z in Mong Kok at one of those phone shops. I believe I have the Taiwanese official version installed for it.
Is it alright for me to go forward with rooting?
Thanks!
I have an Asian model as well. May I know which version you have? Mine is 1.34.707.5. I haven't done a permanent root yet, but I have successfully temp-rooted my DZ using the latest VISIONary app.
As far as I know, you can do root your phone. The only reason that's holding me back is I cannot find a "safety net" if ever something goes wrong when I flash custom ROMs or I discover a factory defect since I cannot find a RUU with the same version that I am running.
Thanks for your feedback. Mine is 1.34.709.5
I don't have any plans to flash any ROMs. Do you think its alright to go ahead and use visionary to do this?
Also whats the difference between permanent root vs temp root?
Thanks!
I guess it is fairly safe to temp root using visionary. I wouldn't suggest perm rooting using it though, as there have been times it has caused some "problems".
The difference between the two types is root is lost upon reboot for temp root. So basically, you have to temp root every time you reboot your phone.

Thanks i'll try it out and let you know how it goes.
Much appreciated.

Just got my Desire Z a couple of weeks ago, and I'm all new to this android platform.
I (think) I wanna root my device, dont know too much about rooting and what it does, but I like the idea of getting the most out of my phone. My number one wish is to get the Gingerbread version running on my Desire Z.
I've tried searching for a couple of hours, tried some rooting thats for the regular Desire. Did not work, I think I'm not doing it right, or that the Desire rooting doesnt work for the Z.
Ok, how do I do this?
First off, you shouldn't mess with these things if you don't know what you're doing. Just guessing around, and thinking the Desire root method would work on the Vision (G2, Desire Z) was possibly a risky thing to do. You could brick your phone if you try to root by the wrong method.
Basic info on rooting (what it is) can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9143411&postcount=2
The Vision has special write protection which initially prevented rooting, which was not present on any other Android phone before it. But the guys here on XDA quickly found a way to gain write access. The proper rooting method is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
If you don't know what rooting is, you might want to read up on it before doing something that may void your warranty, brick your phone, etc.
Also, there are no Gingerbread ROMs out for the Vision yet, so you may want to wait on rooting until that happens (if that is your only reason for wanting to root). Again, you might want to do more research before diving into it, since you won't get what you want just yet.
Try looking up root methods using visionary root. should have a 1 click root method. Although I did the manual root. But worth a try nonetheless, BUT READ THE ENTIRE THREAD AND ITS POSTS, just in case.
so i got the promotion to get a free g2 but heres a few questions im thinking that it will come with the latest rom can i root it ive been looking through a ton of guides and im confused what should i do. which method work to gain perma root

It may come with the latest ROM but I more suspect that it will come with the original (shipped) ROM and immediately receive the OTA update. The good news is that there are no issues rooting even if you have the OTA applied (I think some of the rooting guides assume you do) so I would go ahead and apply the OTA if prompted. This is different than the Desire Z where the latest updates can make rooting more complicated.
The most widely recommended method of obtaining permanent root is the "gfree" method, it will permanently root your phone and at the same time will SIM unlock it as well as set the CID so you could load whatever carrier ROM you might want to.
The only issue most people seem to have with using the gfree method is getting ADB up and running and talking to your G2. Using ADB isn't (as far as I know) strictly necessary to make gfree work but it's easiest and all the guides (that I've seen) have you use ADB.
Here is the section of the wiki showing you how to use gfree to root your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...cess_.28Permanent_Root_.2F_.22Permaroot.22.29
For instructions for getting ADB up and running I would look here:

Could you please stop telling people to use the VISIONary method!? That method has a risk of putting the user's phone into a boot loop! Please know you what your talking about before attempting to help some one, it can make the difference of bricking a phone and rooting a phone. Rage and GFree DOES NOT have a risk of putting your phone in a boot loop. Out of all the people that have messed up their phone, EVERY ONE of them that I have seen has used the VISIONary method. I'm not trying to be mean, but please be more careful when giving advice. I know your just trying to help, and I respect you for that but please do no tell some one to do the VISIONary method.
Sorry mate, I had no clue bout that. I had no loop but i see your point

yes, you are required to downgrade as only 1.34 is rootable at the moment.
you'll get 15 different opinions regarding whether or not visionary is safe, but the general consensus is that it is okay to use to obtain temp root, but very risky to try and perma-root with it.
oke i started downgrading but i'm getting an error "Main version is older update failed" what did i do wrong?
EDIT: Nvm what i did wrong was the usb setting it should be Charge only
..
so did you get it to work just fine after downgrading ?
Using visionary is harmless. I constantly use it to root and unroot my g2. The method you may have come across could be slightly different than what I read so I would say compare similar facts between the two. I got my rooting info from here: http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/ . Theunlockr has video tutorials posted as well as text tutorial. So using this method should help majorly.

does visionary still temp root htc desire z 1.82.. ? wouldnt work for me when i last tried )=
Hello XDA Community,
I am fairly new to the concept of rooting an android device and I have no idea where to start. I understand what rooting is and what it will allow me to do, but I just have no idea how to get started
I was looking around the forums and reading different topics on how to root the HTC Desire Z (or my G2 for short), but a lot of the topics take me to links to other topics, which have links to other topics which have a lot of technical things that are not friendly to a first time rooter (What is S-OFF/S-ON?? Why would I need to do that and how??).
I recently allowed my G2/HTC Desire Z to upgrade to the new Gingerbread 2.3.4, and to my understanding, there is no simple way to get this rooted. After reading the topics, I do see that there is a way around it, but I'm just at a loss as to where to start.
Is there anybody out there that is willing to help me out? If so, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

You should apply this guide for first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
And then this one for rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
Also there will be some people to help you if you need here: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=g2root
You my friend, are the man.
Thanks a bunch for this.

The above linked method will work for you also. You'll have to downgrade first, then root, then flash a pre-rooted OTA build. That'll put you back to where you are now, but with root access.
I've just rooted HTC Desire Z - Android 2.3.3
1. You have to downgrade firmware 2.x to 1.3.4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
2. And then following these instruction in ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD )
3. Done
have any of you guys tried the gingerbreak?
from what i read its able to root any gingerbread device.
i cant post links as this is my second post. but im sure if you google it, you should find it.
i read under the techofweb result.
not sure if it works, i never tried it. Rooting my HTC desire Z voids my warranty
but if you guys out there try it, let me know if its successful.
thanks in advance.

Gingerbreak doesn't work on the G2 / DZ. And doesn't work on many devices.

What we're actually doing now to root is this :
2.3.4, temp rooting 2.3.4, downgrade to OTA 2.1, root that, flash new ROM.
You forgot the last step *PROFIT!* lol all kidding aside for the one who asked the pre-rooted ota is in the development section. don't forget to flash recovery and get titanium backup and all that good stuff first...well second after temproot if you go that method. DO NOT USE VISIONARY!
Also remember to do a nandroid backup of your 2.1 ROM if for some reason you want to go back to stock, or sending your phone in for warranty.

Hello everyone, I am using HTC-Desire Z with the android version 2.3.3
I really want to upgrade my phone to ICS. In case of doing the root, i want to know that, if i root my phone will it downgrade first to the Froyo??? If it will then can i upgrade to the ICS using the custom ROM process???
If anyone knows or understands my problems please provide me a solution and that will be appreciated..
Thank You
Zawad
Yes search the threads and follow the wiki. The only safe way to root is to downgrade first using the method outlined in the wiki. The only way (for now and probably forever) to get ics on a desire z or g2 is to root

Can someone walk me through for the steps of successfully rooting my desire z ?
Thanks

There are so many easy places to find this information here if you just look around. Specifically the Android Development sub forum.
Cyanogenmod wiki for rooting the HTC Desire Z
The XDA wiki for rooting the HTC Vision/Desire Z
Also make sure you do not use the Visionary to do root as it has a high brick risk and don't install Clockworkmod version 5 as that has issues. Stick with Clockworkmod 3.0.2.4.
Another thing ... I suggest before you root your device, you read through a lot of the forum threads for your device so you have a better understanding of what your doing. I apologize if I'm treating you with kid gloves, but your question makes me wonder.
That guide is for 1.72 firmware though I am running on 2.42.666.8. How would I go about downgrading it?
EDIT: Also, what can you do with a rooted phone, I know you can do a lot just not the specifics.
Check the Development forum, there is a guide there for downgrading gingerbread OTA's
-Nipqer
I used this guide to downgrade my ROM.

I was unaware you're phone had a later firmware on it. Yes, as you said, "can do a lot" with a rooted phone. For example you can install a custom kernel and overclock it to speed up the phone. You can install the latest version of Android on it so you know it's always up to date. I can't really think of anymore off the top of my head, but there you go. Rooting pretty much keeps your options open with your phone I guess.
