[Q] HTC Desire Z will not update to 2.3.3 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
After my first HTC Desire Z broke i got a new one (second hand) yesterday. The phone was not used for a long time and still was running Android 2.2, for some reason i do not get the over-the-air update to 2.3.3 it simply tells me there are no updates available. After browsing some forums i see many links to htcdev.com where the update should be available for download... well it is not there anymore..
Has/had anyone the same problem and does anyone know how i can get my phone to Android 2.3.3?
Thanks in advance!
tijn
Current versions:
Android 2.2
Build: 1.34.405.5

I think it's better to root the phone, not update, and u don't have to downgrade for rooting. Think about root instead

Thanks for your quick reply, i thought about rooting the phone but i'd rather have it with the stock firmware. I'm affraid i might break it somehow.
So my original question still stands

How do I know if my Desire is rooted?

I bought a handset off another forum a couple of months back and I think it's a fully unbranded handset, and have been trying to run the 2.2 update, except everytime I get to the green sync symbol after it restarts, I then get a red question mark.
I'm running
Firmware 2.1 update1
Build number .1.1.405.2 CL174215 release keys
Software number 1.21.405.2
So is this rooted? Either way, how do I get the Froyo update to work?
Many thanks!

You will know if it is rooted cos you wont be able to pull it out the ground lol
Only jokin if you phone is rooted you will have a program in your apps called super user.
hope this helps
I have something called superuser permissions. Is that it? As you can gather, I'm a bit of a thicky so an idiots guide would be great!

Yeah thats the one your phone is rooted
Ok. That answers the first part I guess then. Any ideas how I get to Froyo? I can download the update, but it always fails to do it's thing.
Do I have to restore the phone or what? And how?
is your phone branded in any way? even a start up logo ?
and where can you download the update? from system software updates on your phone?
There's no branding on the phone, box or software. I can download the update via software updates.
PS. Thanks for the help so far!
If you can download it from software updates go for it froyo here we go,
no branding is a good sign
Just try updating via the update manager as that should work.
LOL
That's the problem. It doesn't work!
Same thing with me....
I bought a Telstra Branded Handset. Had a company root and install a generic rom. (Telstra handset because it works on ATT 3G.) This morning, the phone told me that I had an Android Software Update (Version 2.2). The phone downloaded it, but wouldn't install. I imagine because the dang thing is rooted.
I will wait a few days for someone to offer a desire rom with 2.2 and HTC sense.
Is there an easy way to restore the handset to it's original software so I can upgrade from there?
Look for the Unrooting guide in the (sticky) guides collection. I believe it just involves flashing a stock rom. But currently you won't be able to root your phone after official OTA froyo update, since it flashes your hboot too. Alternatively you can flash a rooted froyo ROM without hboot.
Edit: Look in development forum for the sticky guide. The place to be for topics like this; it makes them obsolete.

It took a bit of time to download all the updates, but I got there in the end.
My Desire is rooted, 2.1, not 2.2 Froyo, I wish. But I am trying to things in the file management like install and move around apk files. But it wont allow saying I have no permissions. Rooted to me means God access, but its not really god access. Any ideas why?

Even if you are rooted, you will have READ ONLY access to /system due to NAND protection. You can only write to /system from recovery.

2nd post. If you have a superuser app, you are rooted.

Desire official OTA Froyo has come

Hi, everyone. I just received notification for upgrading my desire to Froyo.
But i have one query. At the time I bought Desire, I had used goldcard to install WWE ROM on my desire. I just want to ask that upgrading over the air to froyo wont create a problem in the device?
Sorry if the question is noobish. I am very new to android..
Thanks
Accepting this OTA update will lock your phone down. You will lose root and will have to jump through hoops to get it back.
If you are running a custom ROM or plan to at some point, ignore the update and turn off the check option.
Thanks fr the reply...
I have not rooted my desire. i just created the goldcard to be able to install the official HTC UK ROM as i had bought myfone frm singapore. Should I still wait?
And what can be the path to be be to get the froyo update?
Thanks
I had a Telstra branded phone which I did the same as you with except I rooted it before then deciding to install the WWE 2.1 Rom. Following this I updated to froyo (manually because of wasn't offering through ota update) and now have a perfectly working official 2.2 desire.
I'm not sure about rooting once on 2.2 but you don't sound like you want to root anyway so I say go for it.

Helllllllp me please!

I bought my desire about 10 days ago, and I decided to root it. I followed some guide on the internet and used the unrevoked3 tool to root my desire. Perfect. Its now rooted and I now have root access on my Desire. Why did I root it? I just wanted to install the DSP manager App (installs surround effect on your phone). Installed it. Perfect. The phone has no problems at all and its fine. But I read on Engadget that Ginger bread (Android 2.3) is going to be released soon. I haven't installed anything else after rooting except for juice defender and the DSP manager app. Whats my problem? I need to unroot it. Simply because I need to be on the safe side, and to install any future OTA updates. Oh did I mention that I'm a complete n00b!
What do I need now? Your help. Please help me in getting my phone unrooted. I have a Desire A8181 with Android 2.2 in it (bought it with 2.2). Rooting was painless, but this unrooting seems like a pain ______. I seriously have no idea as to how to get it back to its original factory state. Any help would be much much appreciated! Thank you.
Not sure if these would help too -
Kernel Version - 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
Build Number - 2.13.707.1 CL33262 release-keys
Software Number - 2.13.707.1
I could help, but you'll learn more helping yourself: use search. (hint: ruu)

You got to be joking, you are gone unroot because you think you will receive gingerbread via OTA before there is a custom with Gingerbread?
If you really want Gingerbread stay rooted and wait for a stable rom, which will be released months before the OTA update (if we ever see Gingerbread officially on the Desire which i doubt).
If you answered yes on the first question, the post above has all the info you need.
Thanks Mr.Ghost, I decided I'll stay rooted for a while, like you said, I doubt if the desire will even get an update to Gingerbread (and incase it doesn't I might need to install some custom ROM with gingerbread for which I will require rooting again and I will need to search for the unrevoked3 setup again which is a boring process) It would be sad (and a shame on HTC's part) if the desire doesn't get an update (and the N1 gets it).
Thanks,
Imag xx

[Q] How to root after update?

Ok, i have installed the latest update for my HTC Desire HD. Which updated Android to 2.2.1, and also other things i have been told such as bootloader which has stopped the 1 click rooting from working.
My question is, is there anyway around this? Is there still a way to root my phone as i really would like to install a custom rom etc.
Thanks.
Reading just a bit around in similar threads should answer this for you
Oh, and it case it doesn't answer your question, I will: No, no root for stock 2.2.1 for now.
no root for you
should of read up before you run the update
Damn it. Do you guys think it will come in the future or...
Who knows. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

[Q] I wanna get root on my Desire Z 1.75 OTA

Last night, I bought a new HTC Desire Z. After that, I received a notification said that there's a software update, its version is 1.75. So I updated is through wifi and now it's running version 1.75. I've read around and some people say that I must have version 1.34 or 1.72 If I want to get root.
I really want to get rood and install recovery to upgrade to custom roms. Anybody help me how to downgrade or the new way to get root on my phone?
Thanks all for reading.
Could you go to about phone and see if your running Android 2.3.3?
