Hi,
I recently updated CM 6 to CM7 RC2 and ended up losing everything (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999511). It took me more than a day to get my apps, setting, etc. all back.
How do I "correctly" update RC2 to RC3 without going through the same sh!t again? Is there a way to do it so that everything stays the same?
Thanks
Updates within cm7 don't require any wipe. Just flash the zip file and yer off. Yeeeee haw!

man are you sure? i cant afford to lose everything again... can i just do it through rom manager?
Why don't you make a backup to be sure? I had a system crash a few days ago and could only load CWM. After a backup and complete wipe with new rom install I recovered only the DATA and so I got my contacts, messages, apps etc back in one flow on a fresh rom.

download Titanium backup from the market then "if" you do loose anything, you can put back all your programs/games/saves.
Just flash over the cm7 rc2 with rc3 or nightly without wipe.

Lately I've been having a problem with my Evo. After flashing the latest stable roms 6.1 and 6.1.1, I found my phone freezes, force closes, and reboots, then wont get past the white evo screen. Ive wiped everything using amon ra and clockwork but i keep coming back to the same issues. I even try not using Setcpu on a clean install and still have issues. I also noticed that everytime I wipe then flash, the google apps show up after my first boot, even though i never flashed the google zip file. Is my phone wiping correctly? What could be the problem?

If this ONLY happens to you when using cyanogenmod roms, then you are not alone. The exact same issue happens to me also ONLY when using CM 6.1 and CM 6.1.1. I have never had this issue with any other rom, both aosp or sense-based, except with CM 6.x roms.

Yea for some reason these last 2 releases just wont work right on my phone. Which def sucks because I love Cyanogenmod roms. Anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be happening?
Try the following:
Wipe data+cache twice
Flash sense ROM
boot
wipe data+cache twice
verify MD5's
flash CM
flash gapps
U recommend clockwork or ra
What? This title for a thread and no poop jokes? The Internet makes me sad.
Seriously, though...
I'm partial to Clockwork now because I use ROM Manager Pro. AmonRa was the one I always used on my Hero. Both are good. It's yet another "personal preference" thing.
CM6 Issues
I too have had trouble with CM 6.0 and 6.1. I flashed CM6.0 Stable, and could not get apps to install or uninstall after flashing. I tried restoring an earlier Nandroid backup of my previously working HTC Sense ROM, and still could not install/uninstall any apps. I tried clearing Market cache, fixing permissions, wiping cache, Dalvik cache, numerous reboots, and flashing earlier ND backups with no luck. I finally bit the bullet, flashed Stock RUU, and had to reroot to get phone working properly again.
Think I would have learned from above, but being flashaholic that I am, I flashed CM 6.1 when it came out. Exact same probs, and again had to reflash stock RUU and reroot.
No more Cyanogen mod for me. Nothing against CM, and it may work great on some people's EVOs, but its only caused me headaches.
Good news is I'm getting pretty damn proficient rooting phone using old-school manual adb shell/rageagainstthecage/chmod exploit method, having done it three times now (although I hope I don't find myself in this situation again).
YMMV
Me too. Tried with both clockwork and ra...no dice. Problem is, when I went back to warm, it left pieces and now even warm doesn't run correct. I tried wiping twice and clearing the dalvik too. I know it wasn't erasing everything because there would be apps that were already installed. Like it was installing to a partition, though I have never set that up.

I currently have:
Fresh Evo 3.4.0.1
netarchy-toastmod-4.1.9.1 kernel
I would like to go to:
Fresh Evo 3.5.0.1
netarchy-toastmod-4.3.1 (unsure on bfs/cfs and havs/nohavs)
Looking to:
Save battery (Am using superpower and underclocking while unplugged)
OC/UC
Wifi Tether
The only reason i am paranoid is that I am still slightly new to flashing and like asking questions. (it took me a long time to work up the courage and flash what i have.) Also when i updated clockwork (to 2.5.1.2) i saw people having problems flashing new roms etc. so i didnt update anymore.
Backing up is not a problem (plan on using astro and sms backup)
Also should i use clockwork (version?) for fresh evo and RA for toast?
Again just looking for a smooth install. My phone is my baby and only source for internet..
Thank you for taking the time to read, even more if you reply and help.

I never have problems with clockwork but, I always flash from recovery and wipe catche partition and dalvik cache. You also need to upgrade to the current version of clockwork. You current version does not save you wimax keys.

So youre saying if i update to 2.6.0.1 and ill be fine. Just wipe the cache and all that?
Any suggestion on which kernel version?
Nandroid what you have first. I also have never had problems with clockwork, RA on the other hand on 2 separate occasion caused issue I could not fix!
I forgot to mention nandroid.
I am updateing clockwork now.
I am going to try tonight and hopefully post back if all goes well. Im going with 4.3.1 bfs havs.
***EDIT***
All is well.
I guess i just wanted to hear good feedback.
And i tried clearing the cache, i waited 30-40 minutes. Still was at the White Boot screen.
Restored from nandroid and installed 3.5.0.1 w/o wiping cache. worked within 5 minutes.
Hey all, this is my first post here and unfortunately its a question I have with CM7 Nightly #8..
I've been running CM7 RC1 since it's release and I've had no problems, no reboots, no lag- nothing. I've steered clear of nightlies because every time I flash one I get random reboots.
Today I picked up #8 did a factory reset/davlik/cache wipe and did a clean install and flashed over Chad's incredikernel for GB as thats the Kernel thats worked best for me on RC1. I restored my apps via Titanium Backup like usual and set up everything back to what I had.. ten minutes later my phone goes into a boot-loop.
Anyone else having these issues?
What verison of CWM recovery do you have?
I flashed 3.0.0.8 shortly after it was released. Prior to that I was on the 2 series and still had the issue. I just went and flashed back to RC1 which was more stable for me. Any thoughts?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering of the currently nightlies, which one is running the smoothest? Also, if I'm on CM7 GB6, how do I upgrade to a nightly properly? full wipe and install?
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic
The latest nightlies. Download, and flash like any other rom. just be sure to re-flash the latest gapps with it to be safe.
Edit: Also, from 6+ they all include the wimax, so no worries there.
i think the easiest way is to just use Clockwork Rom Manager.
You can get the nightlies directly from the app, and also receive push notifications when they are released every night. It's very simply with Rom Manager.
Also, coming from an existing CM7 ROM, you don't have to do a full wipe when moving over to nightlies. It won't hurt, but i have successfully gone back and forth without wiping many times.

Just to note, you can only download roms with the premium [paid] version.

Any word on when RC2 will be released?
Hey,
I'm about to update my Cyanogenmod 7.2 RC1 with patch 4 to the latest build. I don't want to loose any of my apps/settings. Can I just install the new rom over my old one without loosing anything? Or is wiping necessary to have a properly working rom?
Use Titanium backup to backup all your data and after updating restore all apps. There are many tutorials on youtube if you need help.

If you flash latest build you don't need to flash patch v4

I already have CM7.2-RC1 with patch 4 flashed, but I want to patch update-cm-7.2.0-02112012-gio-KANG.zip.
The main thing I was wondering is: Can i just flash it and continue using it _without_ doing backups/full wipes etc.
That patch is for the latest build, flash the latest build and the last patch (not patch v4).
You don't seem to understand my question.
No you can't flash it without doing a wipe.
That's not true, at least for the big update (I didn't install the latest patch).
You can flash the update (the one in my signature) without wipe, at least it works on my Gio without a problem.
You may need to do wipe if you use ext4 partition on SD to store applications and it's managed not by S2E (as phiexz said).

Thank you JustVass,
I'll try it, but maybe i'll do backups just in case Luckily I am using S2E.
Make backups with Titanium Backup.
Flash the new version without wiping.
Problems? Wipe, restore as needed.
Incremental updates with minor changes often work fine without a wipe in between.
Heck, I flashed an ICS alpha on my Nexus, forgot to wipe, and it booted up with only a few issues (mostly widget/launcher related). Wiped because I didn't want to take any chances, but I think you get the point.
bassically, u dont need wipe data or cache
u need wipe if u want to install as fresh rom or u have problem without doing wipe data
Ok thanks guys, it really wasn't covered in anywhere. At least i didn't find anything about it after searching
You might still need to wipe when upgrading from 7.2RC1 to latest 7.2.
At least I had issues with say alarm notification - went alarm goes off and shows a dialog tapping any button makes the phone completely locked (until you reboot it... long hold and reboot menu still working there). Same with any other notification that turns on the screen after you locked it I think (I had same issues with SMS notification).
So I propose you do the following: update to new 7.2, back up apps (I used Titanium), contacts & SMS, move your apps from SD-ext (or if there's not enough space just delete them) - you need this step to avoid issues with apps reappearing but not working after you re-install S2E, then wipe, then re-install S2E, Titanium and restore everything back.
