[q] need help please - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to root my cousin's evo today. I rooted and loaded custom roms on mine yesterday and it went smoothly with unrevoked 3. But this one said that the firmware may be too new. So i tried putting a pc36img file on it and as it updated it bypassed the bootlader and when it gets to radio V2 it vibrates a few times then says fail-PU and the rest go through ok. then at the end it says update fail partition update fail. and when i try to reboot it stays stuck at the white htc evo screen. i can pull the battery out and get it back to the bootloader but i cant recover it cuz its not rooted. I NEED HELP FIXING THIS what do i do?

From the bootloader, select clear storage to perform a factory reset, then try to run unrevoked again.

I selected clear storage then it rebooted after 5 seconds. But it stays stuck at the white htc evo screen again. I have my rooted phone right here would putting my sd in his phone do anything? What else can i do?
The computer wont recognize it as a drive so i cant put new files in it.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip Rename the file to PC36IMG, the flash it in the bootloader. Its an RUU of the 3.70 stock image. After that runs, try to re-root.

but i cant access the sd card through my computer to even rename it

So are you saying the sdcard is dead, or just not through the phone?
Cuz you can take the sdcard out from under the battery and mount it via adapter to the pc, or when downloading it, save it as PC36IMG one time.

Have access to another SD card?

heres no way i can make it recognize it through the bootloader? i dont have an adapter. what if i take the sd card out of my phone (htc evo rooted with warm twopointtwo.) and put it in his? can i recover the phone like that?

Only if you do what I said and put it on there. Or run an ruu exe, and connect the phone via fastboot.

ok since i dont have an adapter what im doing is putting another 1gb sdcard i found in my phone and im going to put the pc36img on the root of this one. then try to boot the broken phone with this sdcard. does that sound right? also that link for the file doesnt work.

Sounds good

Boot the phone into fastboot, connect to pc, once it shows up as fastboot usb on the phone, run the ruu exe.

wait i found an sd card adapter now. so what do i do next?

Well now that you got it on there, no need for fastboot, just select update when prompted, then reboot.

Its named PC36IMG.zip, not PC36IMG.zip.zip? And from the bootloader, select fastboot , connect to pc, when it shows up as fastboot usb on the phone then run the ruu exe from the pc. I linked you like 3 posts up.

Evo 4g Bricked USB

It starts to read the pc36img but then goes to the main page. doesnt let me choose to update or not. Im stuck at 1.47. I bricked it last night and lost sd card and usb. I got the sd card working but not the usb. It need me to use terminal and issue su command but permission denied. I made the mistake of going back to stock and updating to the newest ota. I was thinking the ota update would fix my sd card but it didnt. I have clockworks mod but it wont work since im not rooted. I can only charge when the phones off and cant use the usb cable to connect to the computer and view files and use adb. I can get into the phone via fastboot but nothing else. My computer does beep when I plug it in but nothing else.
Thanks
My Hboot is 0.79.0000
radio-2.05.00.06.10
1.47.651.1
Not being able to charge has to be the worst thing.

What OS are you using? I assume windows? Did you install the fastboot drivers? You can push files. But you can also download them via the phone. I would try downgrading the rom then downloading unrevoked 2

I can download files fine and put them on my sd card. I got that working. Im using windows 7 and I have the drivers. I dont know what or how to get it to work. How do I downgrade from the unrooted 1.47 stock rom. I cant get it to update with the pc36img or get the clockworks to open the update.zip. I cant even charge the phone when its on.
Heres the usb fix instructions but i cant root the device so i cant get it to work.
Fix USB
Press & hold vol down and power on the phone
Select fastboot by pressing the power button
Make sure in device manager the driver is installed(Win 7 x64 downloaded them automatically)
Open command prompt like you would to use ADB and type
fastboot oem boot
It will give you a log, look for the line that says INFOCID is SPCS_001, if it says something different, then use the generator below to create one(or hex edit the one I posted)
Download the mtd0.img attached or use this CID generator made by stevebrush over @ Modaco to create a custom one
Download the flash_image attached
Unzip both zips and copy both files to the SD card
Open a terminal emulator(I used ConnectBot) and type
su
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
cat /sdcard/mtd0.img > /data/mtd0.img
chmod 755 /data/flash_image or chmod u+x /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /data/mtd0.img
reboot
Cant get su access so cant apply the fix. This sucks
ok so when you connect the phone to the computer in Fastboot does windows see it and load the proper driver? You can push files if I am correct via fastboot Maybe you can run the root?
Hook the phone up put it in fastboot usb then look at device manager under android phone
Yes fastboot as been working. Was able to apply the sd fix that way. But I dont know how to fix the usb problem via fastboot. It wonts me to run commands in terminal and i dont have permission.
If I had adb I think i can install the usb fix but cant access the phone via adb. When i plug in phone (turned on) its makes a noice on the computer but cant do adb.

OIC I'm sorry I did not realize that. I"m sure someone will be able to chime in. Have you tried running the official RUU while its in fastboot? Or have you tried Hboot USB?
tried the official RUU that i ran in the first place but i get a 104 error. version error or something. I put it in Hboot Usb but adb said it couldnt find the device. Not sure if i did it right tho. If i try to run the rooted pc36img files I get a error saying Main Version is older.

nope doesnt work. Still getting the main version error
does adb work when in HBoot usb plug mode
I'm having pretty much the exact same problem. USB bricked EVO on 2.1 without root. Need root to fix the USB, need USB to achieve root. Really hoping for a miracle, here.
i just ran into the same problem i used an auto root to downgrade hboot 2.02 and it dropped it down .0093 after this i lost usb and sd card i got sd card back but have no way to use adb or terminal to get usb back i used an ruu renamed as pc36img to get back to hboot.2.1.001 but still no usb and no way to root to get terminal to work any ideas?
i am having the same problem here too. doesnt look like there is a solution?
Sd card not workin'
Hey man, I borked my EVO 4g too... What did you do to fix the sd from not being able to be mounted? I can only get into bootloader and recovery... And I heard that if yu can get into either of those, the phone i fixable... Any help, please?

[Q] bricked desire?

So something weird happend with my desire today, I tried to reboot to recovery and it just frezes at splash screen...
cant boot to recovery or fire up the system
I think fastboot works normaly. Cause I can find my phone in cmd /fastboot devices. Is there anything I can flash trough fastboot to fixthis ?
You could first try flashing your recovery image, which you can place to the root of your SD card with a card reader. Then execute the following command while your phone is connected to your PC in Fastboot mode using ADB:
fastboot boot <name-of-your-recovery.img> (your current recovery image)
fastboot flash recovery <name-of-recovery.img>
If what I suggested above does not work, then you could also try flashing back to stock firmware. Try to extract the rom.zip from your stock RUU (found here) and rename it to PB99IMG.zip, then place this to the root of your SD card with a card reader, for instance, and then enter Fastboot mode by first powering off your phone and keeping your finger pressed down on the back button and pressing the power button once. When in Fastboot mode (release your finger from the back button), connect your phone to your PC via USB, and wait for "Fastboot" to change to "Fastboot USB". The zip should then run for you and allow you to revert back to stock ROM.
Note: if you were originally branded, you will also require a Gold Card to return to stock ROM. You can use a card reader to create one using the Gold Card tool in my sig below.
Ok ill finnish my post here...
thanks for response btw
anyway I dont have a card reader is there no way to flash from my computer?

Just to make sure, did you put your device in fastboot mode before attempting to boot/flash the image?
What does "fastboot devices" return?
E.g:
C:\Users\Me>cd..
C:\Users>cd..
C:\>cd android-sdk-windows\tools
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>fastboot devices
/fastboot devices returns HT061PL00341

Ok, then it finds your Desire, thats good.
The things is... you need your rom recovery image/rom image on the root of your SD card, if they are not there, then it will probably return the error you suggested above.
Try using a different phone that accepts MicroSD cards or a USB card reader/Laptop card reader (when you purchased your SD Card, it would have come with an adaptor for the SD card, place the SD card into the adaptor and then try inserting this into your laptop card reader bay).
Then you can try the fastboot commands above having transferred your image to it.
You could even try this in fastboot mode (fastboot USB) in ADB:
fastboot update PB99IMG.zip (name of your renamed RUU file)

OK mate... but if you want DHD, are you aware that you can have these ROMs running on the Desire? They were ported over and contain the same new Sense UI with the Advanced Power Hibernation option, etc.
Do you not think you will be just wasting your money?

Was your phone originally branded? If it was (and you previously de-branded), then you need to create a Gold Card first (use the tool below in my sig with your card reader).
After you have made the Gold Card, download the following: http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.zip
Rename it to PB99IMG.zip, place to the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, enter fastboot mode (back + power), connect the phone via USB, fastboot will then change to "Fastboot USB". It will check the PB99IMG.zip and confirm its selection, and be prepared to wait a few minutes until it flashes.
you sir are my HERO everything got reinstalled, weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I´m 100% back to stock right?

but I bet I can root it again ...
next question:
how did my phone got messed up in the first place? I know i had eclipse on with usb debugging on. I think eclipse tried to adb push some files over and I just removed the phone from the charger. I'm going to be more careful next time

Yes, you will be back to stock firmware. If your phone was originally S-ON, it will remain as S-ON unless you flashed the modified Hboot (AlphaRev) to unclock the NAND security flag providing full root access to your phone.
There will be no Superuser access when reverting back to stock firmware, unless you went and flashed a modified stock ROM that has root access (software root).

Ok, now you have couple options, reinstall usb and try RUU or second one use fastboot.exe to flash spl, radio, and system. This is tricky. Also you can take your phone to service to identify what is wrong, and then come back and say to us. you do not need to pay repair, they will tell you whats wrong and give you offer how much would it cost. Finally you must google alot and try lost of methods. Couple guys had problems like yours and solve it on different ways. Basicly we cannot help you more than this without 100% accurate radio and ruu version.

[Q] Need help unrooting.

I've got some hardware issues that need to be fixed/replaced and I'd like to unroot the device completely before I take it to the store. I followed the tutorials on here that had me use the unrevoked forever S-ON tool (yes, I rooted using unrevoked forever). The step that comes after that is where I'm stuck.
I move the PC36IMG zip file onto my SD card but get varying errors. When I used the one that was linked on the tutorial, I get an error somewhere along the lines of "file is an old version." I did some searching and found a list of radio versions and downloaded the ROM that matched mine. I renamed it PC36IMG and continued but after the phone loads it up in HBOOT, it just goes back to the main screen. It actually tries to load it, says "checking PC36IMG," and then goes back to the menu with FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, etc.
What am I doing wrong? Are these ROMs not the ones that I should be using? I tried to reroot the device (turning S-OFF) so that I can manually flash it but unrevoked won't recognize my device. If there's another file I should use, please let me know.
HBOOT-2.10.0001
Radio-2.15.00.11.19
I used Supersonic_3.70.651.1-Odexed_signed_teshxx.zip this last time.

If you're s-on, you just need to flash a 3.70 RUU.
From my dropbox > http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
Rename to PC36IMG, place on the root of your sd card, flash in the bootloader.
What exactly do you mean by "flash in the bootloader?" I was under the impression that I only had to put it in my SD card and star up the device in HBOOT mode and it would ask to flash it. Is this what you mean? I tried doing this with your file and the same thing happened (loaded PC36IMG, "checked" it, and then went back to the HBOOT screen.

If you renamed the file to PC36IMG, it should have scanned it, and then ask to yo apply an update, in which you would use the power button to select yes, then again to reboot.

HBOOT=Bootloader
Maybe you should try using the RUU method, which requires running the ROM Update Utility from a computer, with your device connected in USB Debugging mode.
Links to the latest RUU and PC36IMG.zip can be found in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17206283&postcount=5
It's possible your SD card is partially corrupted, which would explain why the bootloader won't recognize the PC36IMG.zip.

If we wana throw in the potential sd card not being seen, I raise you this > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Just boot into the bootloader, connect to the pc with fastboot select, then run the fastboot command via adb from command prompt.

In that case, it'd probably be easier to use this, then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18286127
Ok so I went back and redownloaded the zip file and put it in my SD card to make there wasn't any corruption in the process and it worked. It did the update and all that good stuff. I had done the S-ON process before this so does that mean I'm 100% unrooted and the techs at the store won't know I ever was? I've already gone and deleted any traces of root apps on my SD card as well.
Thanks to you both.

If you're S-ON and stock, then you're good to go!

Just wanted to thank you for this file, Had the same problem and this is the only method that worked.

[Q] HTC desire frozen and not working and s-off

Hi I recently bought an HTC desire of a friend, it was fully working and sim unlocked. I then decided i wanted to root it. I used revolutionary and installed i t on my phone. The problem was when i went to install the zip folder which roots the phone, it didn't work. I then tried to uninstall it. It didn't work so I went to the next step and installed a RUU to restore it back to normal. Now the RUU i have freezes on boot up and in HBOOT my phone is still s-off and revolutionary still installed but it freezes when you go in restore on the HBOOT menu. I was wondering if anyone has a way of fixing my phone. I have tried to install of RUU's but they have similar failures. Also when you click clear memory the RUU still does not work. Help would be greatly appreciated as i kind of need my phone back ASAP.
Thanks

Why did you panic? A RUU is always the last resort.
So you say you're still s-off? Install this recovery, following the instructions from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258
Then, flash a custom ROM.

Yeah. It's called GSM service, and it costs a lot of money.
Did you put the pb99img.zip in a folder on your sd-card?

First setup adb on your pc. Install these drivers too.
Then boot the phone directly into fastboot by holding the power and back buttons. Once the phone is in fastboot mode, plug it into your pc. Open a command prompt window and type "fastboot devices" and enter the command. Let me know if it returns your phones serial number.

Don't put it in a folder. It needs to be on the root of the sd card.

It doesn't matter what folders are on the SD card, what you need to make sure is that the PB899IMG file is NOT in any of these folders.
So if your sd card is plugged in and appears as E:\ for instance on PC, you copy the file directly to it, so should be E:\PB99IMG.zip
DO NOT copy it into E:\blank folder\PB99IMG.zip
Does that make sense? Also do not rename the file at all, make sure it is exactly as above, also not "PB99IMG.zip.zip"
When you do this, try to boot into booloader again, hopefully it should find the file and you flash it this time.

The hardest part of the pb99img method is explaining what "the root of the sd-card" means
