[Q] HTC desire frozen and not working and s-off - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I recently bought an HTC desire of a friend, it was fully working and sim unlocked. I then decided i wanted to root it. I used revolutionary and installed i t on my phone. The problem was when i went to install the zip folder which roots the phone, it didn't work. I then tried to uninstall it. It didn't work so I went to the next step and installed a RUU to restore it back to normal. Now the RUU i have freezes on boot up and in HBOOT my phone is still s-off and revolutionary still installed but it freezes when you go in restore on the HBOOT menu. I was wondering if anyone has a way of fixing my phone. I have tried to install of RUU's but they have similar failures. Also when you click clear memory the RUU still does not work. Help would be greatly appreciated as i kind of need my phone back ASAP.
Thanks

Why did you panic? A RUU is always the last resort.
So you say you're still s-off? Install this recovery, following the instructions from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258
Then, flash a custom ROM.

Yeah. It's called GSM service, and it costs a lot of money.
Did you put the pb99img.zip in a folder on your sd-card?

First setup adb on your pc. Install these drivers too.
Then boot the phone directly into fastboot by holding the power and back buttons. Once the phone is in fastboot mode, plug it into your pc. Open a command prompt window and type "fastboot devices" and enter the command. Let me know if it returns your phones serial number.

Don't put it in a folder. It needs to be on the root of the sd card.

It doesn't matter what folders are on the SD card, what you need to make sure is that the PB899IMG file is NOT in any of these folders.
So if your sd card is plugged in and appears as E:\ for instance on PC, you copy the file directly to it, so should be E:\PB99IMG.zip
DO NOT copy it into E:\blank folder\PB99IMG.zip
Does that make sense? Also do not rename the file at all, make sure it is exactly as above, also not "PB99IMG.zip.zip"
When you do this, try to boot into booloader again, hopefully it should find the file and you flash it this time.

The hardest part of the pb99img method is explaining what "the root of the sd-card" means

[Q] bricked desire?

So something weird happend with my desire today, I tried to reboot to recovery and it just frezes at splash screen...
cant boot to recovery or fire up the system
I think fastboot works normaly. Cause I can find my phone in cmd /fastboot devices. Is there anything I can flash trough fastboot to fixthis ?
You could first try flashing your recovery image, which you can place to the root of your SD card with a card reader. Then execute the following command while your phone is connected to your PC in Fastboot mode using ADB:
fastboot boot <name-of-your-recovery.img> (your current recovery image)
fastboot flash recovery <name-of-recovery.img>
If what I suggested above does not work, then you could also try flashing back to stock firmware. Try to extract the rom.zip from your stock RUU (found here) and rename it to PB99IMG.zip, then place this to the root of your SD card with a card reader, for instance, and then enter Fastboot mode by first powering off your phone and keeping your finger pressed down on the back button and pressing the power button once. When in Fastboot mode (release your finger from the back button), connect your phone to your PC via USB, and wait for "Fastboot" to change to "Fastboot USB". The zip should then run for you and allow you to revert back to stock ROM.
Note: if you were originally branded, you will also require a Gold Card to return to stock ROM. You can use a card reader to create one using the Gold Card tool in my sig below.
Ok ill finnish my post here...
thanks for response btw
anyway I dont have a card reader is there no way to flash from my computer?

Just to make sure, did you put your device in fastboot mode before attempting to boot/flash the image?
What does "fastboot devices" return?
E.g:
C:\Users\Me>cd..
C:\Users>cd..
C:\>cd android-sdk-windows\tools
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>fastboot devices
/fastboot devices returns HT061PL00341

Ok, then it finds your Desire, thats good.
The things is... you need your rom recovery image/rom image on the root of your SD card, if they are not there, then it will probably return the error you suggested above.
Try using a different phone that accepts MicroSD cards or a USB card reader/Laptop card reader (when you purchased your SD Card, it would have come with an adaptor for the SD card, place the SD card into the adaptor and then try inserting this into your laptop card reader bay).
Then you can try the fastboot commands above having transferred your image to it.
You could even try this in fastboot mode (fastboot USB) in ADB:
fastboot update PB99IMG.zip (name of your renamed RUU file)
Ok ill get myself a card reader tomorrow , if dosnt work I´ll be a new owner of an DHD

OK mate... but if you want DHD, are you aware that you can have these ROMs running on the Desire? They were ported over and contain the same new Sense UI with the Advanced Power Hibernation option, etc.
Do you not think you will be just wasting your money?

Was your phone originally branded? If it was (and you previously de-branded), then you need to create a Gold Card first (use the tool below in my sig with your card reader).
After you have made the Gold Card, download the following: http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.zip
Rename it to PB99IMG.zip, place to the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, enter fastboot mode (back + power), connect the phone via USB, fastboot will then change to "Fastboot USB". It will check the PB99IMG.zip and confirm its selection, and be prepared to wait a few minutes until it flashes.
you sir are my HERO everything got reinstalled, weeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I´m 100% back to stock right?
no S-OFF no superuser ?
but I bet I can root it again ...
next question:
how did my phone got messed up in the first place? I know i had eclipse on with usb debugging on. I think eclipse tried to adb push some files over and I just removed the phone from the charger. I'm going to be more careful next time

Yes, you will be back to stock firmware. If your phone was originally S-ON, it will remain as S-ON unless you flashed the modified Hboot (AlphaRev) to unclock the NAND security flag providing full root access to your phone.
There will be no Superuser access when reverting back to stock firmware, unless you went and flashed a modified stock ROM that has root access (software root).

Ok, now you have couple options, reinstall usb and try RUU or second one use fastboot.exe to flash spl, radio, and system. This is tricky. Also you can take your phone to service to identify what is wrong, and then come back and say to us. you do not need to pay repair, they will tell you whats wrong and give you offer how much would it cost. Finally you must google alot and try lost of methods. Couple guys had problems like yours and solve it on different ways. Basicly we cannot help you more than this without 100% accurate radio and ruu version.

[q] need help please

I was trying to root my cousin's evo today. I rooted and loaded custom roms on mine yesterday and it went smoothly with unrevoked 3. But this one said that the firmware may be too new. So i tried putting a pc36img file on it and as it updated it bypassed the bootlader and when it gets to radio V2 it vibrates a few times then says fail-PU and the rest go through ok. then at the end it says update fail partition update fail. and when i try to reboot it stays stuck at the white htc evo screen. i can pull the battery out and get it back to the bootloader but i cant recover it cuz its not rooted. I NEED HELP FIXING THIS what do i do?
From the bootloader, select clear storage to perform a factory reset, then try to run unrevoked again.
I selected clear storage then it rebooted after 5 seconds. But it stays stuck at the white htc evo screen again. I have my rooted phone right here would putting my sd in his phone do anything? What else can i do?
The computer wont recognize it as a drive so i cant put new files in it.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip Rename the file to PC36IMG, the flash it in the bootloader. Its an RUU of the 3.70 stock image. After that runs, try to re-root.

So are you saying the sdcard is dead, or just not through the phone?
Cuz you can take the sdcard out from under the battery and mount it via adapter to the pc, or when downloading it, save it as PC36IMG one time.

TELUS HTC DESIRE - Boot Loop Problem - Help! :D

Hello!
I have an HTC Desire that is stuck in bootloop. Anytime i boot the phone up it only reaches the HTC Logo then either gets stuck at the logo or cycles through the boot to logo.
It is through Telus and is no longer under warrenty. What options have worked in order to fix this? Telus support was less then supportive.
I have seen quite a bit of information on this forum and i am unsure which method might be best for my scenario. Any help would pointing me in a direction would be greatly appreciated
Im not sure what information i should post, so if there is something that is needed please ask and i will provide!
Boot into hboot (turn the phone off, then turn it back on using volume down and power). Then post everything that it shows there here.
Have you done anything to the phone like flashing a custom recovery, root, roms, etc, or is everything stock?

Boot the phone into hboot and it will search for the file. When it finds it, it will ask if you want to install. Press volume up to say yes, then after its finished press volume up again to reboot.

Also if eveything goes well with flashing the ruu, i would recommend s-offing the phone. It will be useful later if you run into other issues.

S-off allows you to write onto partitions that you normally are unable to. This could be useful for example if u needed to flash a recovery or upgrade radio. Its also quite easy to do with revolutionary so I don't any reason not to do it.

Download the 2.3 RUU. Then copy it to the root (not inside any folder) of your sd card. Also DONT rename it (leave it as PB99IMG.zip)
Boot the phone into hboot and it will search for the file. When it finds it, it will ask if you want to install. Press volume up to say yes, then after its finished press volume up again to reboot.

You don't have to do anything to load it. when you boot into hboot it will automatically look for it and tell you if it finds it. All u need to do is press volume up after it finds it.

Ok, i put the .zip file on the root of the sd card. Booted into hboot and it only provides me the 4 options. It doesnt seem to auto pick up the .zip file. I should be putting the .zip on the root correct? I dont unpackage it?

Yep it should be on the root and u don't unzip it. Try waiting a bit. Sometimes it takes longer. Does it even search for the files?

Nope, doesnt even attempt to search for it, just insta boots to hboot. Ive left it sitting at hboot for about 30 min now >.<
I double checked, i have PB99IMG.zip on the root drive of the micro sd card.

Weird, it should at least look for it. Are u 100% sure that it doesn't search for it? Try rebooting into hboot again.
If you're sure that its not working then you can try running the exe ruu.

If i select Fastboot, it seems to go through a bunch lines of green text really fast. It seems to say
SD Checking ....................
Loading.....[PB99DIAG.zip]
No Image!.........................
Loading.....[PB99DIAG.nbh]
No Image or wrong image!
Plus a few more lines, but it goes so fast its hard to read it.
I dont think i can manually execute the .exe because i cant reach the phone through usb via my computer.
Also hope your dry wherever you are!

Ok well since this way isnt working you should try running the windows exe version of the ruu (a bit more of a pain)
First download these drivers and install them.
Then download the ruu. Boot the phone into hboot then go into fastboot, and once in fastboot connect the phone to your pc. Once its connected and the phone is recognized run the ruu. Make sure you have enough battery and dont interrupt the process or bad things will happen.
lol im dry, but my power looks like its going to go out soon

Ok, i downloaded the HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe and ran it. It installed the drivers. I booted into hboot, selected Fastboot and connected the USB. At the top of Fastboot, it how has Fastboot USB. The Andriod 1.0 driver said it installed, however i cant see the device in My Computer.
Does this sound ok so far?
Q 2) Once the RUU downloads, do i execute the .exe on my computer, or do i move it to the sd card and execute it from there?
Sorry, just want to make sure i do this correct haha.
Man its raining crazy out there

Sounds good. If you really want to make sure that the drivers are installed correctly and its recognized you can setup adb/fastboot. Then plug the phone in while in fastboot mode and type "fastboot devices" from a command prompt on your pc. If your phones serial number shows up then everything is good to go.
You run the exe from your computer, you dont move it to the sdcard.
Ran the RUU and i cant seem to get it to recognize the connection from usb to phone.

Was there an error? Did you try setting up fastboot and running "fastboot devices" while in fastboot mode to see if it is recognized?
Also i forgot to ask, but what caused this problem in the first place?

A5_CHL Virgin Mobile Fastboot and ADB won't work

I'm trying to reset this phone to stock and it just isn't cooperating. I had fastboot working enough to load the stock recovery on there but than I went to try to use the RUU it would just crash after the Terms and Conditions. So I looked up the solution and it was downloading a bunch of C++ Redistributables. It still didn't work and than I noticed it also wanted me to have the HTC Sync Manager installed so I did that. When that didn't help I uninstalled it. Now when I go into fastboot it just says "waiting on any device". It says Fastboot USB on the phone. The Device Manager reads it as "My HTC". I've been at this for hours and any help at this point would be a blessing.
Try to just extract the rom.zip file from the exe and flash that. You run the RUU and while it's running you click search and %temp% to find the files running. It's in one of the long numbered and lettered files. You can copy that and run using fastboot or rename it to OP9CIMG.zip I believe and put it in the root of your ext SD card and it should run automatically when you enter the bootloader.

Oh, ok. You didn't mention that part so I didn't know. You say you had fastboot running initially enough to flash the stock recovery. Does that mean you've had issues with it from the beginning? I'd try to download the slimmer version found here on XDA and see if that's the issue. Other than that and the first suggestions I gave you I don't have much else. I have this same device a5_chl and haven't encountered this issue with mine. Sorry your having to deal with this. It's not fun.

Is your bootloader still unlocked?
I had to flash the recovery, then run 'fastboot oem lock' before I could run the ruu without errors.
