Why should I buy Defy? What apps are good etc? - Defy General

Hi guys!
I'm relatively new to droid phones but I have heard a lot about Defy and I briefly used some HTCs.
What is the best way to equip it with apps and what are the things that you always use in this phone?
Also any accessories that you find good?
Thanks much,
D

Well, the way I handle Android phones is very straight forward: buy the one with the hardware and firmware I want. Then... find out what's missing or doesn't really work and add apps to make up for it. For instance, the stock email app for pop3 email doesn't work with my email account, so I had to add the app "Seven" to have a workable email. (Though I just upgraded to 2.2 so have to try it again.) All depends on what you need the phone for.

If you're looking for the latest flavor of Android and infinite ways to customize your phone, skip Motorola altogether and look only at Google (Nexus One, Nexus S). \
If you don't mind putting the latest Android yourself, pick a phone that has CyanogenMod firmware. You can bet it is unlocked and you'll find at least another few alternative firmwares for it!
Cheers!
PS: For 100 euros more I would have had a Nexus One and a big smile on my face... Now I have to wait for a cracked bootloader or Motorola's mercy...

Can't mount a Nexus on the handlebars of your motorcycle or mountain bike in the rain. But for those who like to stay indoors and play with their boot-loader... plus if you have the right carrier, you can use wifi calling.

Wow, there's really a bunch of hardcore users on this forum! I will consider Nexus S as well. I was tempted by this anti-hit cover for Defy but I'm not really a traveller or mountain climber
What about energy? I read here a lot of posts where people complain about battery life on Androids. How's Nexus S with it?

I get 3-4 days, but i have optimizations explained next, and NO widgets, and i make only a few calls and read mail or install some app little use.
Anyway. With SetVsel and underclock - undervolted, and setting Wireless always on (very important; always ON for some crazy reason increase battery life when screen is off) you should get at least 24 hours of heavy use. and 2-3 days of normal use.

frankly, I find your question "What is the best way to equip it with apps and what are the things that you always use in this phone?" a bit strange.
> for apps there is this magical thing called "market". any chance you have heard of it?
> I might be a bit conservative but I use my smartphone to call, surf, read email and manage my appointments (i.e. use the calendar). but that is just me. you should be the one who knows what he wants to do with it, not us.
regarding battery life: it varies a lot, just with every smartphone. you can drain it in 1-2 hours, e.g. with GPS navigation or multimedia stuff. but you can have to recharge it only 2-3 times a week, like I do with averge usage (i.e. do thinks when they have to be done and not mistaking the phone for a nintendo)

TP2 vs iPhone

Is there any reason to stick with this phone?
I just picked up the AT&T Tilt2 from LetsTalk.com for free and I still feel like I got ripped off.
I've used WinMo since the days of the Velo and upgraded from the Tilt to the Tilt2 and I think I'm sick of Windows Mobile trying to figure out what it wants to be. Since the Tilt they took away the dedicated camera button and the option to use led notifications. I wanted to try another ROM this weekend but I can't Hard-SPL. Won't work for nothing.
As per iPhone vs this thing.
Phone comes is no storage space.
(I need to pick up a 16gig card for $40. iPhone comes with 32gig in this price point.)
The phone starts at 85% and I can't run more than one app.
(I killed TF3d push and the proxy to get back some ram)
I can't hear the other person. The earpiece is totally muffled.
(Will probably need to replace phone.)
Caller shows as "unknown" during call.
HTC notification stops working and I get the WinMo bubble so I have to reset.
Browsers suck. Apps suck. Marketplace sucks and I think installs to device memory only.
Did I miss anything?

You going to be transferring movies or songs with your 32gig iPhone? Only place your going to watch them is on the phone. Look at it another way you now cant have removable storage if you get an iPhone.

Don't know what you talking about I have more then 50% of my ram left and I am using a stock rom.

I personally like this browser over the iPhone, the pinch feature is nice but we have a zoom bar. Get at&t in the Chicago land area and you will see how much at&t's net work really sucks.

Yes you missed becoming a gay apple follower when you buy your iPhone.

Well the iPhone will be better for you then, since Apple knows exactly what they want you to do with their phone, whether you like their decisions or not.
But I don't want to be a gay apple follower. I don't own anything Apple and don't want to start buying all new power cords because they likes to rape their customers.
Help me keep this phone. Why won't it work! My Toshiba e800 still works. This phone is driving me nuts!
Have you guys seen how Google Reader works on the iPhone and even Android?
What is the point of these threads? You obviously were destined to hate the TP2 because you think the iPhone does everything perfectly. 85% RAM on bootup? Thats a lie. So are all your other problems. Just return it, get an iPhone, and go away.
FYI this board is anything but friendly.......so is the whole internet......actualy the whole human race is stroking it epeen to much to care about anyone elses issues.

I did exchange my phone in store, ... 2 times. Same thing.
Some improvement noted after changing "Treble Level" to "
Very High" in the "HTC Audio Booster" Section of Advanced Configuration Tool v3.3
I wasn't destined to hate this phone.
This is probably the best design on the market right now. Hardware wise this things blows away the iPhone except for the storage. This thing is pretty slick but I'm having problems using the device and you guys are getting all defensive.
I made an educated decision and chose this phone but I'm having a whole bunch of problems which I guess no one else is and this phone just doesn't feel up to the competition. Even Android does more than this thing.
All your complaints have easy solutions for anyone willing to put in even a small amount of effort into searching for and applying tweaks and/or adjustments. If you're not willing to do that then you belong in apple zombieland.
Nothing against the iPhone (I actually own a 32gb iPhone 3GS), it's just some people need to stick to something that works a specific way with little to no need of intelligence to get it working right. Sounds like your there target customer. No offense intended.

Thanks. Trying that.
dude keep the tilt 2, take it from me. I have been using WinMo since the Hermes, had the tilt before this, then I used my upgrade and decided to try out the iPhone. I picked up the iPhone 32 GB 3GS, a case, and a car charger.
After using the iPhone for less than a day, it was very obvious that it needed to be jailbroken in order to have some features that I have become accustomed to. So I jailbroke it, downloaded Cydia (which is the 'underground' app store for jailbroken phones), and tried to make it work. Long story short, I had it for 10 days before I needed to come back to WinMo. Apple has iPhone users by the nuts, and because of that the phone is extremely restrictive. Basic features like changing the background, or being able to have more than 1 (can still only have 2 max) app open. Not to mention Safari does not and will most likely not ever support Flash. There aren't any browsers that do, and there's 1 app that supports a hand full of sites. Not yet break, and other popular ones.
Jailbreaking and apple is like cat and mouse. They release firmware updates regularly and it usually take several weeks (give or take) until somebody creates a jailbreaking app. For those weeks you would be forced to live without your needed apps......unless you hold off on the update. But the thing with holding off is their last few big updates came with features that I've had for YEARS. Example: PICTURE TEXTS!! MMS!! I mean come on, wtf is that?
The battery life was the deciding factor for me. My phone would have 100% charge around 2:00 AM when I would go to bed and by 8:30 AM it was down to 91'ish. Throughout the day the battery would be extremely low and require a charge. To be honest with you the battery life is despicable. That thing needed to be charged more in 1 day than I would get in my tilt all weekend, I kid you not. It's that bad. Even my die hard iPhone friends always ***** about how crappy the battery life is.
I would say hang on to the tilt 2 for a little bit longer. I'm really diggin the Touch FLO 3D interface. I never really ran it on my tilt because it was always a little laggy, but it's smooth like butter right out of the box. I want to hold off flashing ROM's for a while but I know it's only a matter of time. There's a lot of good ones out there, make sure to check them out. If you are having trouble Hard SPL'ing I'm sure if you ask on the forum, it will get answered.
The iPhone was too restrictive for me, and trust me I really tried to like it. I wanted to like it so bad. I was sick of the Tilt. It was laggy, and ever since ROMeOS (monx) left the Kaiser ROM cooking for rhodium I couldn't find a ROM that I really liked. I am looking forward to flashing one of his roms on this phone, but to be honest I'm going to hold off because it's running extremely smooth. I use IE, Opera, and SkyFire. There's a handful of other ones you can try too.
That's my 2 cents

I have both phones - iPhone 3GS & the Tilt2 (& others). Totally agree with you on the restrictions and the suffocation I feel every time I use the iPhone. But again, it is for a certain market/usage scenario. Nothing against that..
But the battery life is definitely not as bad as you saw. Before iPhone OS 3.0, battery life sucked (I stayed back on a very old 2.x version). To stretch battery, I kept all radios (Wifi, 3G, etc) on manual control and switched them on as necessary. Things are definitely better with 3.0 - all the radios are on Auto now. I dread going to 3.1 or 3.2. I'm staying put for some time now..
I love WM and was waiting for the Tilt2 (My first PPC, touchscreen/keypad device). Google's lack of love for WM saddens me, but hey, there's always another way - thats what makes WM special..
Interestingly, I'm (sorta) having a battery problem with the Tilt2 on Stock ROM. Battery full charge lasts me 1.5 to 1.75 days max. I want to get atleast 2 full days on the fresh/brand new battery. I'm playing with the settings in the Advanced config & Touch Diamond2 apps this weekend to see if I can improve on the battery life. Again, not a biggie as I can always get a second battery with it's own charger. I'm still in the "optimizing" mode. And there is always the path blazed out by our esteemed cooks.. ^hat tip..
superrrguy, WM takes time, but hey you can get what you want.. iPhone (even with the app store or jail break, etc) is what Steve wants for you. Again, not a bad thing. You need to decide whats your thing..

Same here. There's no fix for that on Tilt 2 yet. (only Touch Pro unlocked ver, which doesn't seem to work for Tilt 2). Also the "unknown caller" issue has no fix either yet. The stock browsers are pretty bad too. Using Opera Mini, Skyfire or flashing a new ROM will solve. It takes a little patience working with Tilt2 but is worth it. Still love it
I knew it................
Oh no!!!
I thought that Rhodium section will be saved form iphoney vs....
But no

Look in this Forum for ideas about tweeking your Tilt 2 to function as you like. Start by getting rid of all the AT&T Crapware - it does kill the memory. I've killed about 60% of it, and now I have 35% available when up and running, which sounds aweful, but this phone does more with that than any WinMo phone I've had since the MPx200! It flies!
All the other issues are either faulty hardware or easily tweeked - look in the forums and you'll find the fix to your issues.
You won't be able to change ANYTHING you like on the iPhone, so don't switch unless it's Nirvana to you, or you are willing to give Apple total control over your phone. Your choice, but either way, please, less winging and more action, many others have made the same helpful suggestions yet you persist in crying over the same issues that you could have fixed yourself by now. If you're a noob, then welcome, but please say so, so we can offer more basic advice.
Either way, good luck, everyone deserves a good phone that they like!

35%? with touch flo 3d?
im using miri's 6.5 manilla 2.1 rom and its 65% when no program is running -____-
I think one of the problems of built-in memory is if the phone needs servicing for some reason and the phone cannot be turned on and you cannot delete the personal data of the phone, then you risk the data will go to the wrong hand.
For TP2, I would simply take out the SD card before I would send the phone to any service centre.
The Tilt2 is a powerhouse workhorse for the business oriented consumer. The iPhone is a toy. Do you want to be associated with all those teens at the local mall carrying around iPhones? I tried out the iPhone. It is definitely fun for the games but I was not able to be productive on it. When I exchanged it for the Tilt2, the AT&T clerk could not understand why I would want to trade in my iPhone for the Tilt2. The Tilt2 is NOT for the average consumer. You have to tweak it to get it to work to your liking.

About the earpiece sound quality issue, mine sounds great (out of the box). So I suspect the OP has a defective unit.

Just ordered my Desire, what first

Hi all, I have just ordered my Desire and it gets delivered Tuesday whats the first thing I should do/install when turing my Desire on ?
Make a phone call? Send a text? Read the ****in forum?

that depends on quite a lot of things.... what do you want to do with it?, do you want to root it? what firmware it has when you get it will determine how you do that.
put it on charge for 12 hours BEFORE even turning it on!!!!! Then the battery will be much much better, I didnt do it the first time, 1 hour with heavy use, now, with a new (official HTC Desire) battery it is 2 days, don't know if its just me, but be sure to read the forum and the leaflets you get with the phone!!

This is a tossers response and not indicative of the normal people on here.
What to do first? Well its really dependant on what you like to do. Me personally would straight away try to get it on Froyo followed by trying to get Music Junk installed and all my google account set up so that my contacts are all stored in the cloud as opposed to on the phone.
Rooting is OK but apart from backing up has few benefits tbh.
I dont know if you have used android before but there are some really crap apps out there that promise the world and deliver nothing so I suggest "obtaining" a copy first and if you like it and want to keep it then buy it. Unlike Apple the Market is fairly unregulated and there is a lot of plain lies and sometimes simply variations between the hardware which results in you not getting the software you paid for.
Doubletwist is a nice music app too that has a PC sync Client like itunes.
Short answer: ASTRO File Manager

I wouldn´t sign this... This "load it one billion hours before use" is an old myth, back from the days of NiMH. You´ve a Li-Ion battery in your phone, so it shouldn´t make any difference how long you load it the first time (by the way, the perfect point of use of a Li-Ion is between 45 - 55 %... at least in PHEV-Batteries)
I would say, the first thing to do is get to know your new super-phone

I've actually been looking for another app. I HATE the way the input thingy stays at the bottom. I used to hop up and down when typing.
Personally, first thing I'd do is just use the phone. Get used to it and you may find it does everything you need straight out the box!
If, after a week or so, you feel there are parts that can be improved then delve into the Market and/or rooting and see if this can help you. I only use about 4 apps so A2SD isn't needed and I've only rooted to remove the crap I don't want in a ROM to keep the phone as streamlined as possible

Cheers Guys some very good comments there and the odd pointless one, I have had an HTC Hero for the last year but I have been using the missis old iPhone 3G for the past couple of months, the main problem I found with the Hero was when texting (using Handcent) I kept accidently pressing the wrong letters (so annoying) is this fixed on the Desire, also when browsing the web on the hero (which I do a lot of on my phones) the pages not showing the correct size on the screen I think the iPhone was a lot better for browsing the web compared to the Hero, is this also better on the Desire ?
Is it worth upgrading the ROM on the Desire to an unofficial 2.2 version if so which is the best to upgrade to and how easy is it I had all sorts of problems trying to get Froyo on my Hero I gave up in the end and ordered the Desire I kept getting connection Error 170, couldnt backup the Hero using Ti Backup etc...

Is anyone else getting bored with their Evo?

Maybe its just me... but I'm becoming quite bored with my Evo. It doesn't matter what ROM I'm using, I am just getting over Android. Sure it boots fast... but my battery won't last even a full day with heavy usage and its tedious changing them all the time, the touchscreen is way too sensitive at times, and since FroYo, I've had way too many freezes and reboots to count.
I'm honestly ready to jump on the Torch or just go back to using my Bold 2... I could pound the hell out of my Bold 2 and it would still last a day and a half minimum, I rarely, if ever, had it freeze, and it did most things I needed it to.
Am I missing something here? Because Android is turning out to be pretty boring. I hate the fact that I can't have a full desktop replacement like I could on Windows Mobile, I rather dislike having to select one e-mail at a time to delete it, and the customization is just not there...
you had me until you said you'd go back to blackberry.
Boring? Bb may be the most boring thing ever
But yeah maybe android isn't for you if you think you can do most things on your bb.
I like mine still and gingerbread will make it more interesting.
That said it gets stale at times but so did iphone os and web os
All things do. Bb got stale 5 years ago
I said I'd go back to Blackberry for stability purposes... not because its not boring. Plus I wouldn't have to buy another phone... I already own a Curve 8330 I can use on Sprint and my 9700 is on ATT.
Its either that or back to the Mogul or Touch Pro 2... I'd rather shoot myself.
I guess for me it would be more useful if I had a hardware keyboard...
EDIT: I guess I was expecting more... You know full flash is great and all... but without proper 3D acceleration it runs like ****. Same goes for the games on the Evo. 43FPS on Antigen? Are you kidding me? The Evo should absolutely SPANK that game...
Dude, if you like stability, unroot your phone and use stock 2.2. Stock = Stability. Period. Also, how does one get "bored" with a phone? As far as I'm concerned it's a tool you use to make calls, browse web, send texts, etc. Do you ever get "bored" with your laptop or your tv because it does what it's supposed to do? Please.

Please.

I do get bored with my TV thanks and my laptop and my desktop can both be upgraded to extend its capabilities. I run multiple operating systems on both machines.
And stock isn't stable. I've seen people ***** about stock just as much, if not more, than rooted. FroYo is just trash.

I don't have high expectations for WP7. I would love to be proven wrong but I don't even enjoy that particular interface on my Zune...
The Torch is something new and it fixes the main *****es that I had about BlackBerry - boot times and the web browser. Plus ATT offered it to me for 214 even though I only became a customer in January.
On the same token though I think its absolutely appalling that RIM is using the same 624MHz processor that my Bold 2 has and the Bold before it did as well so that would definitely factor into my decision to most likely not purchase the device.

Just a nature of the beast
I tried iphone 4 and was bored after a week
Android is new completely to me so I'm still having fun with roms and kernels, oh my
But I'm sure I'll get bored at some point I just hope gingerbread is out by then
I've not had stability issues though barring some mistakes I made as I learned how to properly flash roms
If I can hold on til Gingerbread (provided the Evo has the horsepower to run it considering it has no dedicated graphics processor and Gingerbread recommends it) I might be fine... I guess one of the biggest annoyances for me is the difficulty in finding apps. The Market is a huge mess. On my berry, I search appworld for a term and it searches the description as well plus gives me options to organize by price, popularity, reviews, etc... Unless I am blind, there is no way I can do this with the Market...

The Evo does have a dedicated graphics processor. In fact, the adreno GPU is quite capable for a mobile device. Games just need to be re-written to support it (Nova is an example of this, it used to run like crap, now runs beautifully). Sure it's not as powerful as the SGX series, but it's certainly not that underpowered.

The community around thee android platform had really impressed me
Especially on this board!
I honestly don't see how you could possibly get bored... You have roms and kernels to last you days of flashing...
Like gambling? You can play Live Poker.
Like racing? You can play Asphalt
Like reading quotes, books and newspapers? theres an app for that.
Like porn? well who doesn't? There is even an app for that.
Craving some super mario or final fantasy? You have emulators.
Like listening to music? You have pandora and a bunch of other radios...
WTF MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT? Some people are just never satisfied.
like honestly...I just don't get it. If your having trouble finding a stable Rom try evios latest and use one of kings kernel. Im easily getting 15 hours on a single charge with moderate-heavy usage.
P.S the latest app thats been keeping me busy is Akinator. That sht is crazy!!! the first time I used it I literally dropped my phone.

Help me pick a new phone

So I've had the EVO for about 6 months now and I really like the functionality it provides. But, I've been finding lately the the maintenance the phone requires actually takes up more time than I save by employing said functionality. I've wavered on this for a few months now but I think I'm going to "downgrade" my phone to something smaller and simpler....something to simplify my life. For those that are wondering, here are the reasons I'm done with the EVO (or similar smartphones).
Battery life
Bad signal strength
Size
Does everything okay but few things great
Crashes, hangs, other random issues (like for example, I woke up this morning and my phone was 10 minutes behind on time)
I don't want to get in a debate about the merits of the EVO vs. other phones. The EVO is one of the best phones I've had, I just think I need to simplify this portion of my life. So, here is what I would like out of a new phone.
Small, small small
Keyboard is optional
Works on Sprint
Touchscreen optional
Full web browsing in a pinch
GPS Navigation is a must
A camera would be nice but not necessary
Facebook would be nice but not necessary
Pandora would be nice but not necessary
Cheaper than the EVO
Any thoughts?
Why would you ask an EVO forum to get a good review of OTHER phones. it's an EVO forum. we're a bit biased.
I would suggest a Blackberry Curve 3G. Or any other Blackberry model for that fact.
I'm considering switching to that. I came from a Blackberry to the evo. Blackberry phones are great phones. Reliable, huge user base so a lot of people to help if you have a problem. Battery life is amazing too. The apps are getting better too. More choices.
I've been seeing Evo's sell on ebay for about 300 bucks or so, and I've seen BB Curve 3G's selling new for 250 so that's what I'm thinking about doing. I miss blackberry big time.
To the person above me: I had no problem suggesting a phone...

I assume you are ruling out Android as a whole, so I would also go with a blackberry as the next best thing. However, coming from one to an Android device (the EVO's is my third) I will never go back to the Blackberry.
Internet just sucks in comparison, and you will likely have to pay extra for navigation and it won't be as good as Google's.
No other option in my opinion. You could try a pre, but I wouldn't.
Sent from my EVO using XDA App
I have a Blackberry Curve (the newer one w/out trackball, thank god) for work and the one thing I like about it is that the battery lasts for days. That and everyone has them so BBM is nice. It's also small and really light.
However it is slooooooooooow compared to the Evo, but if you're okay with that, seems like it would fit the bill.
There's also a new full keyboard flip Blackberry for Sprint.
Probably BB. Simple and it works.

Battery life can be fixed. I can easily run an entire day on a single charge after installing setcpu, new rom, new kernel.
Signal strength isn't something I've noticed specific to the EVO. Have you talked to other people on your network with different devices?
Size, yeah, you either like big phone or you don't. I love big phones, but a lot of people think it's just way too large.
Not sure what you mean by only a few things great. It's highly customizable and fast. Not really sure what you can't do with it that you want.
Crashes.. I'd suggest custom rom, new radios, new kernel. Play around with it. Myn's 2.2 and MikFroyo 4.4 are awesome ROMs. Fast and stable for me, and a lot of people. The time thing is weird. Normally the clock doesn't update until you actually interact with the phone. Could be a different issue though.
I think a number of your complaints can be fixed with the right customization. Don't ditch a phone over issues you can fix IMO. But then again you want to "simplify" things, which leads me to believe you aren't really the kind of person who enjoy tinkering with your phone. Androids really shine when you mod them. Androids for modders, iPhones for people who just want a phone that works.
If you aren't willing, or can't, fix the problems then definitely go with a Black Berry. There are 3 phones that are awesome: iPhone, Android, BlackBerry.
Go with the cheapest blackberry Sprint is willing to offer you. It'll do what you want. They're very reliable devices, they just lack the wide range of customization you find on iPhone and Android devices, but that's because they're designed with businesses in mind. I doubt you'd be able to find a modern phone that lacks the features you want. The only thing I'm not totally sure on is pandora.

Well of course you are I guess I figured that since this is the phone forum where I have spent the most of my time, it seemed like a good place.
I had the Palm Pre before and to be honest, there are several things (Exchange integration, multitasking, settings management) that I really miss from the Pre. That being said, the EVO obviously is much faster and does a lot more on the whole. However, I have been thinking about moving to the Pixi.
Blackberry is a good option as well. Honestly I'm open to a non-qwerty non-touch phone if it has GPS navigation.

I've gone that route. I've run 3 or 4 different ROMS under different kernels, and every one has it's own problem. At one point under Cyanogen I was getting 2 days battery, now inexplicably I don't get more than 10 under light use. I'm tired of having to troubleshoot problems like this. Or the fact that I woke up 10 minutes late today because my phone's time was off. Or the fact that about once every other week my Exchange account just decides to delete itself from my phone. It seems like to get what I want out of this phone, I need to spend all this time tinkering with new ROMS, new kernels, etc etc and like I said, maybe if I did more than I already have then I could get what I want out of this phone. But I don't want to spend several hours a week maintaining my phone. The EVO has huge potential and the functionality it can provide is impressive. But to me the trade off is not worth it in my life right now.
On a more philosophical note, I feel that we're in an awkward phase of smartphone development (and technology development in general). There has been a very large concentration on increasing features and functionality, but at the expense of reliability and stability. I'm waiting for us to hit a functionality/speed plateau so more work goes into integrating these features intelligently and intuitively, and making these devices rock-solid stable.
Id suggest either the BB Bold or the Iphone 4. I dont like blackberries but the bold is pretty nice.

Honestly none of those are relevant to the EVO anymore except for the size.
1. I am running Myn's Rom Stock Kernel(#15), and several Co-workers are running unrooted stock with the 3.70 OTA (Kernel #15). I get 24 hours out of a charge easily, and they are averaging 17hours. I run with GPS, mobile data, background data all on, beautiful widgets weather widget syncing every 30 minutes.
2. Signal strength is going to be poor regardless of the phone really, if your on sprint and your signal is bad with the EVO its going to be bad with other phones. I have awesome signal everywhere i go with my EVO, no dropped calls ect..
3. Size is the only thing you can argue against the EVO vs other phones, I don't feel the size is an issue at all, but thats a personal preference.
4. My EVO has been able to do everything i need it to do perfectly with no hiccups.
5. Maybe you should look at everything you've done to your phone, mine has never hung, or crashed, and the time is always spot on.
People expect everything to be perfect, but not even a laptop is perfect without a few tweaks, just like the EVO, clean up the bloat, manage your programs, and you will be fine.
Out of all your reasons for ditching the EVO, the only one i can see as the real excuse is the size, and for that maybe you should take a peek at the EVO Shift 4G, otherwise your looking for a blackberry, and they are just extremely slow when performing tasks.
this thread is funny.

I've gone back to stock several times and started over. But then the battery life is horrible and it doesn't have features that I like from other ROMs.
I said I wasn't getting into a debate but I guess here I am. I love...love the functionality of the EVO much of the time. Being able to push one button and say "Navigate to Starbucks" and it just does it is badass. But when simple things like battery life, web browsing, time, Exchange sync......aren't up to par, it's hard to overlook them.
So anyways, different strokes for different folks right? If everyone had the same phone that would be boring.
I might like the iPhone 4 but refuse to pay the AT&T Premium.
I'm actually looking at the Blackberry Pearl now. I think it has most of the stuff I want. And it's small as crap and cheap.
So far the consensus is Blackberry. By the way, I stopped at a sprint store while I was shopping earlier, and I looked at the Blackberry style. The flip phone Blackberry. It did have sprint navigation, so I would assume other newer model Blackberry's would too
I wasn't fond of the idea of a flip phone Blackberry, but after playing with it, I sorta liked it. It had a real quality feel, the new Blackberry 6 os is fast.

Thanks. It's actually my plan today to go by the Sprint store and check out the Style.
Sounds to me like Android is right for you but the Evo isn't. Try a smaller Android phone with an LED screen that uses up less battery (Epic comes to mind). Both Epic and Evo Shift have physical keyboards. Also, if you root it, just go with the a stock rooted rom so you don't have to worry about the instabilities of using what any particular dev feels is "the best" rom. That will eliminate the time you have to invest in your phone, and you won't have to deal with a BB that can't browse the simplest webpage or can't navigate it's way out of a paper bag.
My $0.02.

The signal bar at the top on cyanogen roms isn't your actual "cdma/cell signal strength" it's your 3g signal strength I believe...
and I highly urge you to reconsider leaving android for anything other than an iphone 4... blackberry and palm really don't have anything to offer that android or ios don't. You could try a windows phone when/if one comes out for sprint...

How many people have moved on?

Last week end I upgraded my Cell to the newer HTC ONE. I just had enough with the low battery life of the GLide and the constant Bluetooth issues on various Roms not to mention annoying GPS Synch. Since all these issues are on a Samsung Product I decided to jump ship to the Newest HTC phone. I am simply making this post to wonder if many others have moved on as well to other phones.
I will miss my Keyboard and my MicroSD slot but I think I will manage.
I will still occasionally be checking GLide Forums but may spend more time on the HTC ONE forum. Just wanted to say I really loved and still do love the GLide Community. Too bad Samsung never released a JB Rom for this phone.
What do you think I can get for my GLide if I wanted to sell it? HTC is offering 100$ for my old Cell phone because I purchased a ONE.
I always preffer htc devices, but, I buy glide because I dont have enough money and I want a tegra device (htc onlyu has tegra 3 and is too expensive for me) The HTC ONE is excelent, I still have the glide because I dont have money to buy other phones
I hate HTC devices.. will always be Samsung but not far from moving on

I would move on, but the problem is: there are no QWERTY phones available... specially powerful ones.
GSMARENA doesn't have anything on future phones with physical keyboard... so this is probably the last of the mohicans.
I'm thinking about the Nexus 4, but I have no idea if I'll be able to live without keyboard.
Best regards.

THe HTC has a SnapDragon 600 Processor rated at 1.7 ghz Quad core. Same as the S4 just the S4 is clocked at 1.9. It did not cost much Rogers waived my upgrade charge and let me get it at 149.99 on a 3 year contract after only having my GLide for 1 year and a half. WooHoo!
I'm not planning on moving along any time soon. I don't care about having the 'latest and greatest' phone, because to me it's just a phone. It sends text messages, makes phone calls, takes photos and videos, and allows me to use my ebook reader.
I used to want the qwerty keyboard for gaming and MUDding, but I don't really do either of those anymore. But by the same token, why should I bother "upgrading" just to get rid of the keyboard? I don't see the point in spending money when I don't have to.
And I'm not too fussed about not being able to upgrade to JB. I'm happily using ICS which does all I want it to do - GPS works, Bluetooth headset profile works in the car, and I have enough of a degree of customisation and flexibility to make it easy and enjoyable to use. I only upgraded from my Milestone 2 because there were particular aspects of that phone that were very frustrating.
So, will I upgrade any time soon? I don't think so. I actually have a spare Glide (still in original, unopened packaging) which I plan to list on eBay and sell, but I've only had the phone for 7 months now and don't see any legitimate reason to spend money on a new one.
But that being said, I don't have the same interest in development and 'ooh shiny' that a lot of other people do. I don't see the need to upgrade every year, or every 2 years. The phone is fast enough, it boots quickly, and it serves my needs. I also know there are other people having issues with GPS with this phone, and considering how dependent we are on the technology these days, I can understand that as being a reason to move on.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. If you actually feel you have a genuine reason to move on, then do so. But I would suggest taking a pragmatic view of the whole picture - perhaps just downgrade to ICS (which really isn't actually that bad) and you'll have your working Bluetooth again.

But I would suggest taking a pragmatic view of the whole picture - perhaps just downgrade to ICS (which really isn't actually that bad) and you'll have your working Bluetooth again.

are you using plain ics stock? looks there is the only way to get bluetooth working again
I'm using IcePop ROM, which I think requires you to flash the AT&T ICS ROM first. Since trying out the JB builds all I did was restore my previous IcePop ROM backup and flash the kernel again to get it working.

When I had stock ICS w/ 14toggles .. My battery life exceeded 20 hours (with JuiceDefender ultimate installed).. bluetooth worked, and GPS worked once the fix to the gps.conf and sirgps.conf was applied...
Glad you found a phone that you enjoy but sorry to hear you couldn't make it work with the Glide - especially with a fully working CM just around the corner.
Yeah, the glide is better with CM, (battery, performance, etc) I just miss skype and magicjack
PD: yohan4ws, I try juice defender, but, always turn off my wifi in my house and I never receive whatsapp message only with screen on, I give time to settle and learn, but always give me problems dont know how you use it

Ya, I got a Galaxy S3 4G. I do miss having the physical keyboard but having the bigger screen makes using the onscreen keyboard acceptable.
I still have the Glide, but reverted it back to its original Rogers GB, as it was the most stable and functional with that ROM.

I just recently got the glide and absolutely love it.
It's super fast and smooth on cm10.1. Even the custom ICS roms are pretty good.
The keyboard is absolutely terrible. I only use it when working in a terminal emulator doing programming (need lots of ();\ type stuff, slightly easier.)
The Stratosphere has a much better keyboard, I'm sad to say, and it is nowhere near as good as my stolen torch was.
Anyway, the Tegra 2 is awesome for me. I build and compile medium sized c++ projects on it and run a Django webserver on it for development/testing of a backend system I'm building.. so I can do everything on the phone directly.
I don't watch a lot of video, take a lot of pictures, or do other "smartphone-y" things on it. But for what I do, it's absolutely amazing.
Oh, I also use the native SIP dialer in android for 100% of my voice communication. I made a SIP gateway on one of my servers in the US for Google Voice. 100% free US calls as long as I have data anywhere in the world.
I really can't imagine what a faster/fancier phone would enable me to do that I can't do now.
Oh, I also have a larger 3rd party battery, and run the Ondemand governor for maximum battery life. If I keep it in airplane mode most of the time I can forget to charge it overnight and still have enough juice to get through the next day only using it for critical things.
Very happy with the phone and ROMs overall. (I'm currently building cm10.1 to work on the speaker/headset and then bluetooth issues.)
I moved on to the S3 and gave my wife the Glide. I couldn't take the lack of dev support any longer.

Took me about 10 minutes to set up. Then 3+ hours just playing with it .
I have a VPS that I do development and various things like this. Have even considered scripting it for self-service and monetizing it a bit. Would be very easy (and cool) to do.
