Just ordered my Desire, what first - Desire General

Hi all, I have just ordered my Desire and it gets delivered Tuesday whats the first thing I should do/install when turing my Desire on ?

Make a phone call? Send a text? Read the ****in forum?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

that depends on quite a lot of things.... what do you want to do with it?, do you want to root it? what firmware it has when you get it will determine how you do that.

put it on charge for 12 hours BEFORE even turning it on!!!!! Then the battery will be much much better, I didnt do it the first time, 1 hour with heavy use, now, with a new (official HTC Desire) battery it is 2 days, don't know if its just me, but be sure to read the forum and the leaflets you get with the phone!!

This is a tossers response and not indicative of the normal people on here.
What to do first? Well its really dependant on what you like to do. Me personally would straight away try to get it on Froyo followed by trying to get Music Junk installed and all my google account set up so that my contacts are all stored in the cloud as opposed to on the phone.
Rooting is OK but apart from backing up has few benefits tbh.
I dont know if you have used android before but there are some really crap apps out there that promise the world and deliver nothing so I suggest "obtaining" a copy first and if you like it and want to keep it then buy it. Unlike Apple the Market is fairly unregulated and there is a lot of plain lies and sometimes simply variations between the hardware which results in you not getting the software you paid for.
Doubletwist is a nice music app too that has a PC sync Client like itunes.

Short answer: ASTRO File Manager

I wouldn´t sign this... This "load it one billion hours before use" is an old myth, back from the days of NiMH. You´ve a Li-Ion battery in your phone, so it shouldn´t make any difference how long you load it the first time (by the way, the perfect point of use of a Li-Ion is between 45 - 55 %... at least in PHEV-Batteries)
I would say, the first thing to do is get to know your new super-phone

I would say it did take a good couple of days for the battery to seem to hold its full charge. I guess it just needed some time to calibrate.
First thing I'd do: go and download Dynamo Kid. I love that game so much <3

Shazam <3 Not sure on the MSN Talk though -- I just use eBuddy and I've still yet to share everyone's love of Handcent

Oooh! Download Extended Controls is THE HANDIEST widget I have ever found. It's basically a customisable Power Control widget.
Catch That Bus has saved my bacon so many times catching a bus and it's well worth the cash.
Lookout is great if you lose your phone/have it stolen you can locate it from the site!

LOL Handsent is OK But i agree its nothing special

With the updated Sense UI that comes with android 2.2 I like the default HTC sms application better than Handcent.

I've actually been looking for another app. I HATE the way the input thingy stays at the bottom. I used to hop up and down when typing.

Personally, first thing I'd do is just use the phone. Get used to it and you may find it does everything you need straight out the box!
If, after a week or so, you feel there are parts that can be improved then delve into the Market and/or rooting and see if this can help you. I only use about 4 apps so A2SD isn't needed and I've only rooted to remove the crap I don't want in a ROM to keep the phone as streamlined as possible

Cheers Guys some very good comments there and the odd pointless one, I have had an HTC Hero for the last year but I have been using the missis old iPhone 3G for the past couple of months, the main problem I found with the Hero was when texting (using Handcent) I kept accidently pressing the wrong letters (so annoying) is this fixed on the Desire, also when browsing the web on the hero (which I do a lot of on my phones) the pages not showing the correct size on the screen I think the iPhone was a lot better for browsing the web compared to the Hero, is this also better on the Desire ?
Is it worth upgrading the ROM on the Desire to an unofficial 2.2 version if so which is the best to upgrade to and how easy is it I had all sorts of problems trying to get Froyo on my Hero I gave up in the end and ordered the Desire I kept getting connection Error 170, couldnt backup the Hero using Ti Backup etc...

bye bye touch pro 2

so after 3 weeks of hangin on this forum and spending all my free time learning the phone to do the tricks i want it to.
or even to work straight for more than 3 days without reset i returned my phone and got a blackberry bold 9700
since it suits my needs more.
ill wait till the HD2 comes out here in US
it was a great phone (in theory) but in practice it was kinda bulky, unresponsive, umm kinda useless for me personally.
i felt like i was using windows 95 again.
program errors every day at least one
freezing constantly
setting up email every week because it stops receiving mail
then hardware wise:
no camera flash, and quality is not so great for being 3.2mp(ive had much better)
no headphone jack mmkay
forget about one hand use nless you got girl fingers, nut then it wil be too heavy to hold.
the mein reason is actually what alot of you guys should consider is how much time u spend tweaking, modding,FIXING, your phone VS. how much time you spend actually using your phone
with this phone it was 80/20 ratio which is not what i bough the phone for.
blackberry it was about 30/80 which was pretty satisfying for me.
I guess windows mobile isn't for everyone, nor is the tp2. Enjoy your new device.

Shame to hear your bad experience
For me, spending my time here customizing and learning it´s pleassure!
You must really like modding your device, otherwise you always con go for iphoney, crackberry or any other "ready to use" brand
Rhodium is a great device for me
Its all about taste i guess
Its all about taste i guess, .. i used to have a Motorola RAZR V8, Linux-Based, ... and i used to MOD the shi*t out of it, i really liked that, even though that the battery life was really bad, but i liked it cuz it was mood-able. after that i bought nokia E75, not much i could do with it but adding themes and apps, .. its really reliable, and fast, but its kindda boring when you cant do anything but the original functions
anyway, . .wish you good luck with your BB mate!

Couldnt Agree More. I Mod My Phone Everyday. Its Only So Much To DO With A iPhone/Blackberry. Im Bout To Get The HD2 Though.
well it was mostly because of speed of the device.
im probably the most ADD pc user i know. most of the time people have no idea what im doing on the PC because i have so many windows open and i go thru them very quickly when im doing something. and they sit there like wtf.
so blackberry OS is a lil snappier. out of the box it has most features that i need without tweaking...
i do want the HD2 when it comes out but its probably gonna be expeeeensive.
and like i said i bought the phone so i can use it not spend all time modding it. i did that with my sony ericsson and once i was done. the new one came out that had all the features so. i could spend my 6 months just saving up some money for new one and do something else.
Some people go buy a new toyota and some people go find old chevys to restore
it is kinda like a muscle car to tweak.
I still miss my wizard. made that thing run faster than a Kaiser... or this tp2.
I kept coming back to windows because the OS and OEM are so tweakble. I dont have problems teathering internet to my laptop... in fact it is like having a mini laptop.
I think that as soon as the new rom comes out for T-mo I will do everything I did on my wizard to make it run as fast as I want it to, even if it takes a month. (which it did) I keep hearing people complain about their Blackberries and IPhones.. "I cant do this; I cant do that" and meanwhile I raise my IQ just problem solving.
Exactly. Some peoples phone are also their hobby, others just want a phone.
Basically my assumption is that ALL windows smart phones will be slow no matter how many new versions and faster cpus there are. It's just windows...lol.
I do agree that other phones such as the iPhone or Blackberry is extremely fast, but when it comes down to modding, you really can't do much...
You're basically stuck with what your phone came with and nothing else.

30/80 on the BB, huh? Wow, you are getting 110% from your Blackberry? If so, where do I get one of those? Now we all can see why a windows "smartphone" was so difficult for you to use.

He he he he......
I can understand why some people like windows mobile and the flexibility to mod and tweak etc., but i'm so tired of windows mobile and their crap OS full of bugs. Yes you can install cooked ROMS and the chefs around here do a great job but when the core code (OS) is crap it brings you back to the same bugs no matter what ROM you're running. For example, SMS on every windows mobile phone i have owned (treo, mogul, touch pro and now tilt 2) has been crap. It's actually worse on my tilt 2 than any of the previous winmo phones I owned. I actually just installed a "hotfix" which is supposed to fix the sluggish/freezing SMS application and either the update didn't install (looked like the install went fine) or the update did absolutely nothing to fix the sms app because my sms app is just as slow as it was before and still freezes. If SMS wasn't such crap on winmo I would stay with a winmo phone but since it's getting worse I'm either going to the Iphone or an android as soon as the androids are released for AT&T.
I absolutely love the TP2 hardware. I love Manilla/Sense when it works. I just want to get my phone set up with the programs I want with the theme/backgrounds I want and leave it alone and let it get my emails, make phone calls, and browse the occasional web page. But simple things that shouldn't cause the phone to lock up, does. Any time I change the Theme on my phone, Sense locks up and I have to soft reset. Winmo has been out for quite a while simple tasks like that should not be an issue. Sometimes after I softreset Sense won't launch and it locks up my phone. Nothing to do but softreset again and hope for the best. I tried installing SPB Shell. Progress bar stuck at 100% for like 30 minutes. Guess something went wrong so I soft reset. Tried uninstalling and the uninstall sticks at 100%. No way for me to get rid of it so I had to hard reset and re-set up my phone. This was after spending an hour researching trying to find a way to get rid of it.
But I finally have my phone looking the way I want it too. All the programs I want installed. We'll see how stable it is now.
Comming from an original TYTN II then moving to an iPhone and then a Blackberry and then an Android phone I really do love the possibilities of the ecosystem of Windows Mobile but with my iPhone, Blackberry, and Android they were so much more stable and easier to live with day to day. One of the things I miss most about the Blackberry platform is the ability to plug it in, and backup the entire device and create a sort of snapshot of that time and day of your config. So if I need to wipe my device I can go back to a point where everything was installed and working the way I wanted it too. This software came with the phone and wasn't something you had to spend 5 hours researching on XDA Developers to see if it's even possible.
I love this web page, it's an invaluable resource with TONS of information. But for those of us who don't quite know all the nomenclature, or know what things will work with what version of Sense/Manilla, or your build of Windows, or that maybe items from the Blackstone will work on your Rhodium, etc it's pretty tough sledding reading and researching trying to figure out what you want to know to do what you want to do. It's almost like there is too much information at times. And the information is presented in a way that only experienced Windows Mobile users know what the heck the information means. And if a new user posts a question they will be told by 3-4 different people that the information is out there if only they would do a search. But as a new user it's hard to search for something when you aren't quite sure what it's called or if it's even possible in the WinMo eco system.
lol thats why i choose a toyota over some beat up chevy.
BECAUSE IT DRIVES and i dont have to spend hours making it work...
had the blackberry for a qwwk not and havent had a single complaint yet.
no freezing up. no need to constantly update it.
no need to go thru registry
blackberry browser is not the best one but it is better because IT WORKS when i need it to, it doesnt frreeze up every time i open it.
sorry guys but you can make all the excuses the fact is, winmo is SLOOOW and buggy.
i didnt pay 600 dollars for a phone that i constantly have to "maintain"
its like buying a 70,000$ mercedes and spending your whole evening trying to work out all the bugs and engine codes instead of driving it... yes the phone is great, lots of potential but what good does it do if it doesnt perform the functions it supposed to?
Why are you still here?
And it isn't Windows Mobile that is slow, it is the crap processor HTC has been using for the past 3 years and has just now finally started using a decent one with the HD2.
Though I do agree it has more bugs than any of its competitors.

I decided to wait till all 1ghz processor bugs are fixed, then hope a Touch Pro 3 arrives and will upgrade!

Meantime I´m enjoying my Rhodium a lot

I certainly agree that the proc is a bit outdated, but not quite that much...the first HTC handset with the Qualcomm 528Mhz chip was the Diamond, released in June '08.
But I have to say, I think the TP2 is a shining example of how much usability can be milked out of even processors that aren't much more than 50% of the speed of what's currently available. I know we're all having secret dreams about a qwerty-slider "TP3/HD3/Nexus2", but until such a beast is announced, you can pry my beloved Rhodium from my cold dead fingers.
I totally agree. You have said a mouth full. I am what you call a begginner. I've had an Excalibur,ATT Fuze and now a Tilt 2. I've modded every single phone more than twice and I knew nothing when I first started. Thanks to Xda-developers. I love my Tilt 2. I wouldn't trated for anything else until something new comes out with a keyboard.
Blackberrys are so borring and Iphones has had its big share of issues. I had the 1st gen and 3G version. Modded that too but nothing comes close to my Tilt 2. Best part of my Tilt 2 is the tilt feature. Set it down and enjoy a movie.
Up to now I have not seen a cell phone with out an issue. Thats why there are people like Xda that come to the rescue. You may see your self in a crackbeery site in need of help.
My point is move on and theres no need for sorrow or goodbyes.
....I´m reading here of slowlyness, hat the phone freezes, and so on....
I have my TP2 now for 3 month....it is my first winmob device.
Have flashed a german custom ROM, and made some tweaks....have installed a lot of apps...
BUT: I think, the phone isnt THAT slow....also my phone doesnt freeze very often.
And, by the way: SMS works very well....!!!

Is anyone else getting bored with their Evo?

Maybe its just me... but I'm becoming quite bored with my Evo. It doesn't matter what ROM I'm using, I am just getting over Android. Sure it boots fast... but my battery won't last even a full day with heavy usage and its tedious changing them all the time, the touchscreen is way too sensitive at times, and since FroYo, I've had way too many freezes and reboots to count.
I'm honestly ready to jump on the Torch or just go back to using my Bold 2... I could pound the hell out of my Bold 2 and it would still last a day and a half minimum, I rarely, if ever, had it freeze, and it did most things I needed it to.
Am I missing something here? Because Android is turning out to be pretty boring. I hate the fact that I can't have a full desktop replacement like I could on Windows Mobile, I rather dislike having to select one e-mail at a time to delete it, and the customization is just not there...
you had me until you said you'd go back to blackberry.
Boring? Bb may be the most boring thing ever
But yeah maybe android isn't for you if you think you can do most things on your bb.
I like mine still and gingerbread will make it more interesting.
That said it gets stale at times but so did iphone os and web os
All things do. Bb got stale 5 years ago
I said I'd go back to Blackberry for stability purposes... not because its not boring. Plus I wouldn't have to buy another phone... I already own a Curve 8330 I can use on Sprint and my 9700 is on ATT.
Its either that or back to the Mogul or Touch Pro 2... I'd rather shoot myself.
I guess for me it would be more useful if I had a hardware keyboard...
EDIT: I guess I was expecting more... You know full flash is great and all... but without proper 3D acceleration it runs like ****. Same goes for the games on the Evo. 43FPS on Antigen? Are you kidding me? The Evo should absolutely SPANK that game...
Dude, if you like stability, unroot your phone and use stock 2.2. Stock = Stability. Period. Also, how does one get "bored" with a phone? As far as I'm concerned it's a tool you use to make calls, browse web, send texts, etc. Do you ever get "bored" with your laptop or your tv because it does what it's supposed to do? Please.
I hear you and don't totally disagree
Android platform is still young
Maybe windows phone 7 can bring something new along but I doubt our as they are blatantly copying iphone os 3
Its tough to keep pace nowadays with users demands for new stuff. I include myself as one of those users
As far as bb I was questioning why you'd buy the torch but if you are saying just a phone you already have that's a different story

I don't have high expectations for WP7. I would love to be proven wrong but I don't even enjoy that particular interface on my Zune...
The Torch is something new and it fixes the main *****es that I had about BlackBerry - boot times and the web browser. Plus ATT offered it to me for 214 even though I only became a customer in January.
On the same token though I think its absolutely appalling that RIM is using the same 624MHz processor that my Bold 2 has and the Bold before it did as well so that would definitely factor into my decision to most likely not purchase the device.

If I can hold on til Gingerbread (provided the Evo has the horsepower to run it considering it has no dedicated graphics processor and Gingerbread recommends it) I might be fine... I guess one of the biggest annoyances for me is the difficulty in finding apps. The Market is a huge mess. On my berry, I search appworld for a term and it searches the description as well plus gives me options to organize by price, popularity, reviews, etc... Unless I am blind, there is no way I can do this with the Market...

The Evo does have a dedicated graphics processor. In fact, the adreno GPU is quite capable for a mobile device. Games just need to be re-written to support it (Nova is an example of this, it used to run like crap, now runs beautifully). Sure it's not as powerful as the SGX series, but it's certainly not that underpowered.

The community around thee android platform had really impressed me
Especially on this board!
I honestly don't see how you could possibly get bored... You have roms and kernels to last you days of flashing...
Like gambling? You can play Live Poker.
Like racing? You can play Asphalt
Like reading quotes, books and newspapers? theres an app for that.
Like porn? well who doesn't? There is even an app for that.
Craving some super mario or final fantasy? You have emulators.
Like listening to music? You have pandora and a bunch of other radios...
WTF MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT? Some people are just never satisfied.
like honestly...I just don't get it. If your having trouble finding a stable Rom try evios latest and use one of kings kernel. Im easily getting 15 hours on a single charge with moderate-heavy usage.
P.S the latest app thats been keeping me busy is Akinator. That sht is crazy!!! the first time I used it I literally dropped my phone.

Are you buying one? If yes could you share the points that you think matters for you to own one?
Thanks
I'm definitely considering buying one, or at least asking for it for Xmas if I don't get around to buying it. I've kind of been wanting to get a watch anyways and this brilliant little device would be a nice watch and great for seeing what messages friends are sending to me while I'm working. I'm also an accessory whore so theres that as well. Why buy a fancy watch when I can get something that connects right to my phone and does much more than tell me the time
If it isn't astronomically priced I would consider getting one. Sony made an older bluetooth watch that is still available on ebay for a fairly high amount though.
I amuse myself with the thought of kids in school being able to check their text messages / social networks from their watch. I would have.
I have one since yesterday but display wont work, battery wont load,so bad.
Send it back.

Yes, it's difficult to get the phone to a backpack when riding the motorcycle.
Tomorrow I get my Liveview . I also think I will have problems with the battery. I will explain.

I'm actually thinking of buying this one too. regarding battery life, right now I have my x10 connected to my mbw-150 and IS800 and so far my phone lasts a day, granted I only wear them when I go out which is like 6 or 7 hours a day.
6 hours are the normal battery time for the liveview device!

6 hours battery life is putting it a little low. Got mine since Friday 19th and have been using it since.
The battery holds for about 14 hours with on and off (regular) usage.
But as with all new devices, you'll probably drain that thing dry in about 5-6 hours, since you will be fumbling it all the time.
But as time goes and you'll use it normally, you should see a days worth of usage from the thing.
What concerns me, personally is the stability of the Software.
I don't know, how much is the apps fault (fixable), or that of the device (I've read no mention of it being update-able).
I already wrote SE for a statement on the matter.
As it is now, the device regularly quits working.
It wont go further then showing you the watch (time and date).
Nothing else.
After turning it off and on again, it automatically connects again and works though (taking about 10 seconds and two button presses).
With that behavior it's quite unreliable for notifications (it's main purpose).
I hope, SE can somehow fix that.
Got mine from ldlc.com
work nice.
But I'm a little bit disapointed with my mw600 now. I don't understand why the LiveView can display my contact name and my music title and the mw600 not ....
Dear All Thanks for the application
can anybody post the other 7 applications for live view since i dont have the android market in my x10 mini pro
apprecaite......
Can anybody please provide the updated version of liveview.apk?
Thanks, Sigi

MBW-150????!! i have that watch and i couldnt make it work like should be, its there any apk like in WIMO for it to works???

So I hear that one of these phones is coming to Sprint soon...

And I'm thinking about picking it up. I currently have the Epic 4G and I had the Evo and honestly..I just dont like how Android is doing things. Spent more time tweaking and messing with it instead of using it as a phone and it still bugs me :/
But the point of this thread wasnt to bring that up..here's what I'd like to know:
This is how I use my phone. A few calls. I used to text a whole bunch...then I realized how dumb that was so now I only send about 20 a day. I listen to music a sht ton and I also use the browser a sht ton as well. I, however, dont use any apps other than the apps given to me from the get-go.
Would any windows phone 7's battery life be able to cover those things for at least 4-5 hours? Also, what are the biggest issues with windows phone 7 right now? And by that I simply mean problems that can be found on all phones, not just things that you dont like personally.
And I was googling and youtubing trying to answer those things for myself and I saw this one video..and this guy went to the bottom of the screen and on the bottom right it had what looked like some XBL stuff...the games on these phones run multiplayer through XBL?

WP7 should do this perfectly fine. The browser is great, with zune listening to Music is perfect. And from what I hear battery life in general is great.

The major issues currently are, it can't connect to a hidden wifi network, the marketplace is a little buggy and will crash at times, no copy/paste if that matters to you. Though the marketplace and c/p are getting fixed in the update that is coming out in the next week or so.

Full multiplayer isn't there...yet. Turn based multi-player is however
Battery life on WP is better than android in my opinion (definately depends on battery size, etc).
Windows phone is nice, I was sick of android (had an evo on sprint) as well so I jumped ship over to AT&T and got the focus. Windows phone is a breath of fresh air. Android is just so choppy and hacked together... Gingerbread is nice, but still slow compared to windows.
Yeah I have been thinking about getting the Arrive (pro7)on sprint when its released. I have played around with WP7 a few times when I go to Best Buy, and I like the simplicity of the UI. its almost like the difference between iOS and Honeycomb. I love android to death, I'm just ready for a change I guess. It's worth a try anyway, if I don't like it I can always go back to my EVO or my Shift. And from what I have read about the Arrive on Sprint, it will come with copy and paste out of the box on the 20th.

Seriously? That's all? I'm liking WP7 already! Well..I mean those are problems and I dont like problems but I dont even go to the market on my epic and I dont use wifi...I probably wouldnt have even noticed those things if I had the device and nobody brought it up.

Well I saw that this one WP7 phone had like a 1200mah battery and it got 12 hours which is pretty impressive even with medium use. I think the one for sprint will have atleast a 1500mah so Im excited! And yeah, Android is just so damn choppy...and Android does get A LOT of things right but at the same time, they get a lot wrong...which wouldnt be a problem if they planned on fixing those issues but I just dont see any fixes in the future. The OS is too busy trying to steal the gamers from iOS...providing a smooth experience just doesnt seem top priority right now...and thats a shame.

Yeah that Arrive is what Im looking forward to. And like you say, if I dont like it im in the same boat as you... I can just activate my Epic again and it'd be all good. But I doubt I'll go back.

Why should I buy Defy? What apps are good etc?

Hi guys!
I'm relatively new to droid phones but I have heard a lot about Defy and I briefly used some HTCs.
What is the best way to equip it with apps and what are the things that you always use in this phone?
Also any accessories that you find good?
Thanks much,
D

Well, the way I handle Android phones is very straight forward: buy the one with the hardware and firmware I want. Then... find out what's missing or doesn't really work and add apps to make up for it. For instance, the stock email app for pop3 email doesn't work with my email account, so I had to add the app "Seven" to have a workable email. (Though I just upgraded to 2.2 so have to try it again.) All depends on what you need the phone for.
If you're looking for the latest flavor of Android and infinite ways to customize your phone, skip Motorola altogether and look only at Google (Nexus One, Nexus S). \
If you don't mind putting the latest Android yourself, pick a phone that has CyanogenMod firmware. You can bet it is unlocked and you'll find at least another few alternative firmwares for it!
Cheers!
PS: For 100 euros more I would have had a Nexus One and a big smile on my face... Now I have to wait for a cracked bootloader or Motorola's mercy...
Can't mount a Nexus on the handlebars of your motorcycle or mountain bike in the rain. But for those who like to stay indoors and play with their boot-loader... plus if you have the right carrier, you can use wifi calling.
Wow, there's really a bunch of hardcore users on this forum! I will consider Nexus S as well. I was tempted by this anti-hit cover for Defy but I'm not really a traveller or mountain climber
What about energy? I read here a lot of posts where people complain about battery life on Androids. How's Nexus S with it?
I get 3-4 days, but i have optimizations explained next, and NO widgets, and i make only a few calls and read mail or install some app little use.
Anyway. With SetVsel and underclock - undervolted, and setting Wireless always on (very important; always ON for some crazy reason increase battery life when screen is off) you should get at least 24 hours of heavy use. and 2-3 days of normal use.

frankly, I find your question "What is the best way to equip it with apps and what are the things that you always use in this phone?" a bit strange.
> for apps there is this magical thing called "market". any chance you have heard of it?
> I might be a bit conservative but I use my smartphone to call, surf, read email and manage my appointments (i.e. use the calendar). but that is just me. you should be the one who knows what he wants to do with it, not us.
regarding battery life: it varies a lot, just with every smartphone. you can drain it in 1-2 hours, e.g. with GPS navigation or multimedia stuff. but you can have to recharge it only 2-3 times a week, like I do with averge usage (i.e. do thinks when they have to be done and not mistaking the phone for a nintendo)
