What's the best method to root being on software version 1.32.651.6?
I read through the sticky and it looks like the two popular options are the new AutoRoot method, and using Unrevoked. It says the AutoRoot method will work for my version, so I'm assuming that is the best route to take.
I was curious if there is a manual way of rooting? I'd enjoy actually doing the steps to get root access.
If not, then would you recommend I upgrade to the latest software version and then root? Or go ahead and use the AutoRoot method with my current software version?
Thanks!

With your version you should be able to use Toast's method. You can find it here:
[TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/
[TUTORIAL] How To Unlock Nand Protection ~ Part-2 [Gaining RW Access/Full Root]
you're lucky (make sure your bootloader hasn't been updated and sw version downgraded, I suppose). but if your setup is really that old, use fastRX8 method (here on xda). I used it back when I had your version, and didn't even have to touch a computer to do it.
he's got a great thread and video. took me about 30 min (drunk), being a total android noob (and it has nothing to do with adb even)
Thanks for the replies. Out of those two options posted, I think I'll go with Toast's method. I do remember reading through that method back when I got my phone and was considering rooting. I'll look through those to links and see if it all makes sense.
After rooting and doing a nandroid backup with that method, is it still recommended to backup my 4G RSA keys? (using this method from the sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900)

Yes it is always a great idea to backup your wimax RSA keys. It is also a great idea to do a full backup right after you finish rooting before you change anything so you can always restore if anything gets messed up or lost. I use Amon-Ra v2.3 as most say it is more stable than Clockwork recovery but that is just an opinion.

You place the file I attached on the root of your sdcard, then update it, reboot, and reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3. You can use rom manager to flash it, but its only on version 2.2.
The way I did it, and remember I am on a newer version of the Evo than you, but I used Unrevoked v3.32 to root the phone, I already knew about adb. Then I followed the directions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Also that is the creators page so any update should show up there.

So I just completed part 2, and got to the point where it says to come here and get the latest radios. Is this a necessary step if I restored my nandroid backup from before step 2?
If so, then is this where i need to go to get the radios? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=latest+radio
And lastly, I'm having a hard time finding install instructions for these.
Thanks!
Just did a full backup with Amon-Ra v2.3, now time to store those safely somewhere and look into flashing a rom! Thinking I will start with CM7 RC4
Figured I'd just keep updating this thread with everything I've done so far.
Did a second nandroid backup with just wimax.
In addition just backed up the wimax rsa key using the following procedure:

Ok I'm confused. Titanium Backup is saying that I'm not rooted? Hmm...
Well I don't know what happened, but I'm guessing that my nandroid restore at some point removed root? Just a guess. I'm gonna start over...
So I've been confusing S-OFF meaning that I didn't have root/nand, thinking that "S" stood for Superuser. Man... lol

Those are the ones, after you finish flashing it tell the recovery to reboot and it will finish loading them then. Make sure you do not pull your battery during it and you'll be ok.
Another option is to get the PC36IMG of Sprint Lovers and flash that through the bootloader, that is usually the safest way.

yep, the S in the bootloader stands for Security and refers to your NAND (system/boot/recovery) lock. You'll have that as long as you have the engineering hboot so make sure you don't update it.
With Titanium Backup just start the app and click on problems there you will see install busybox. After that installs it will want you to restart the app and everything should run then.

Been lurking for a while and reading up on rooting and flashing roms. Picking up my Evo tomorrow and I am going to root and flash a custom rom then. I have all of the necessary files downloaded and have read over TheBiles instructions numerous times. My question is on Section I Step 4 when I download unrevoked do I need to be concerned about downloading the correct version of unrevoked? I know that changes have been made to that app to allow more of a "complete" root but I am not interested in rooting that way. I just want to follow the guide provided by TheBiles so I want to make sure that I am downloading the proper version of unrevoked.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I'm not really sure about the changes to Unrevoked. I followed The Biles method a week or two ago and it went just fine using Unrevoked. I'm not even sure that it's actually Root. I think all it does is allow superuser access temporarily to allow you to backup your phone prior to actually rooting.
Once you've done the backup using Titanium Backup (and you aren't going to even need that on a fresh phone) it wants you to reboot into the phones recovery system and flash the actual firmware/whatever update that roots the phone.
So, long post made short: I think you can skip the Unrevoked part and go directly to flashing PC36IMG.zip. But I'm not 100% positive.
I can't seem to find the answer
Should I do anything after I do the OTA Simple Root. I was thinking of flashing the original RUU and going through the 3 step simple root, assuming this method doesn't unlock NAND.
I am using the White HTC Evo if that matter
It seems like I am also having issues with Wireless Tether with this root method, maybe I should just RUU and start over

All simpleroot does is downgrade you from 1.47 to 1.17. You have to update to the stock rooted rom(guide below). You'll still have root/nand access with superuser permissions to allow wifi tether/titanium backup etc etc.
Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
When it says to rename to PC36IMG.zip leave the .zip off. It won't read it with the .zip but leave the other file alone...don't rename it.

Which RUU did you flash? The 3 step simple root won't work with the latest RUU. You need the Simple root OTA.
EDIT: Which software version do you have as of now?

Yeah, you can go to a custom rom if you want. If you do the stock route first you have the option to do a nandroid backup which saves everything to that point so if you run into trouble later on you can just restore everything back to that point(meaning no doing rooting then unrooting then rooting again lol)
IMO, I would do the stock rom first and wait a couple days as the devs are cooking up the latest roms for a release here soon. Then I would get a custom rom but that is me.
EDIT: I only mention the nandroid backup because I don't believe you have a recovery flashed yet. If you do have a recovery I would highly suggest making a backup of both nand and google propiertory(however you spell it).

After I flashed that rom that you provided me with in link three, the recovery changed. I assume that is normal. The option for nandroid backup was gone, but I did find NAND backup with I assume is the same thing. The NAND backup is in case anything ever goes wrong when I am flashing correct?
Thanks for the help.
Used to know how to run/install custom kitchens in the WinMo scene, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of Android.
I currently have a stock EVO running 2.1, which I ran unrevoked 3 on to get root (though from reading, I understand that's not "full" root). I only have Titanium Backup, & WiFi Tether, as those are the only real reason that I wanted root.
Now I would like to upgrade to Froyo, and given all the information, I just want to be sure I have the right method.
I understand that there currently is no way to root stock 2.2.
From my current start point, is this the proper way to upgrade?
1. Obtain full root by using Simpleroot 3-click method.
2. Download stock 2.2 rom, and load onto sd card, then rename to "update.zip"
3. reboot phone and let it install 2.2
Will this let me retain the root access, and allow me to reinstall the WiFi tether and Titanium Backup while running 2.2?
Thanks!

#1 - Excellent choice and right on the money!
#2 - Don't download ANY Froyo ROM that doesn't specifically say it's rooted! Also, DO NOT EVER accept any OTA updates. There are probably 8-10 2.2 Froyo ROMs in the dev section that are rooted for your delight, choose one you like the best.
#3 - Once you pick the ROM you want, put in the root of your sdcard. Then wipe followed by flash the zip from recovery.
As always, don't forget to nandroid backup FIRST!

Never use a stock provided ROM, got it .
Okay, so I have to use a pre-rooted custom ROM to retain root after the upgrade.
Going by the one in your signature, it looks like that's just the stock rom, that has been adjusted to retain root privlages, (which is what I'm looking for) is that correct?
Okay, having some trouble using the SimpleRoot method.
I've tried both the Simpleroot .1, and Simpleroot 1.47, both of them lead to the following error. When the prompt on the computer tells me to boot into bootloader, then wait for the device to prompt me to install update, I get the following message on my phone:
Code:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
Am I already fully rooted when I ran unrEVOker?
don't like to bump, but would like any help if possible.

Im pretty sure it will take if you've got factory recovery. It doesn't seem to be as secure as the vaunted froyo update was.
And yes, you can simply reflash clockwork, but from bootloader, as a PB32IMG.zip

I've asked in a couple places for the stock recovery. If/when I get it I will post a short how to.
I just don't want to lose everything on my phone to get this update.
I did a NAND backup and installed the update manually and there are several improvements I would like to have, such as significantly reduced charging time. But right now, without a custom ROM, the only way to get it is the RUU, and that wipes the phone.

Having this issue with somebody else. I'm not sure if you can name it PB31IMG.zip or not, but you can try. Worst care, it doesn't load that way either.
I'm helping somebody else with the same issue right now, but his phone is totally hosed up, so I'm taking him back to stock 2.2 first. He has a good Titanium backup, so he won't lose anything.

Okay, I have confirmed that you may perform "install sd/update.zip" from ROM Manager. It does work.
I'm still confused; do I have to have the stock recovery to do this?
I am not sure of these steps because I have read the threads from here and the post you put on Android forums as well and both threads are mentioning some issues.
Some posts state payload-update is unneccesary.
Some posts state that these steps are failing.
The post I am most concerned about states that "Rooted STOCK ONLY" means you can't have removed any bloatware either before doing this update. I have several apps removed, do I have to restore them before I take these steps?
Also not sure why folks are asking if they must have stock recovery. The instructions don't say anything about that.
I have noticed that the nagging has stoped on my dinc however if I go to the about update section in setup I find it states that the update has been successfully downloaded and is ready to install. Will this try to install the next time I boot the phone or is OK to boot?
Edit: Forgot to mention Some posts state that the process fails and you have to wait a few hours to continue, that's confusing and not in the instructions.
In summary
1) Do you have to re-install bloatware to make these steps work?
2) Is payload-update really necessary? What does each install in these steps do?
3) Does the process fail at some point if you don't allow the device to sit for a while, if so what step should you let it sit? It would be nice if someone understood this part also, anyone have a possible reason for this requirement?
I was asking if stock recovery is required because I've been told that OTAs won't install correctly if you don't. I was wondering if that still applied.
I got the update notification tonight and I clicked for it to install, and it counted down from ten seconds and said it was going to reboot and install updates, but it never did reboot. I'm guessing this is because I have unrevoked recovery? My gf's non rooted phone did get the update tonight as well, and hers installed without a hitch.

I wanna root my EVO and delete all the garbage I dont use. Ill stick with the stock rom for now.
With the hero, i would download rom manager, root the device, install clockwork and have at it - deleting the bloat.
is the process about the same with the evo? from my research, it seems that unrEVOked will root and flash a custom recovery. is this accurate?
thank you thank you
Former Hero user myself. I do believe unrevoked has been updated for the easy root method. If you want a stock rom you can use sprintlovers, or MikFroyo4.2 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026. 4.3 is themed, but 4.2 is mostly stock with some bloat taken out, but it's put on your sd card if you want to install any of them, and it has been re-engineered. Basically useless language support has been taken out of all the apks and it is very fast, especially for a sense rom.
Ideally, I just want to gain root access with the stock rom, then delete bloat.
Is this possible with unrEVOked?
thanks!
i ran unrEVOked, everything seems to have worked. it rebooted, now the unrevoked recovery reflash tool reads, 'waiting for reboot'.
my phone rebooted and i installed superuser from the market. I dont have SU access via adb. i havent tried the phone method because i prefer adb. im gonna attempt it now.

Please before you go to far read up on Amon_RA/Clcokwork recovery and some of the issues that have come up recently. Also if you are a basic noob to this I suggest you download Rom manager to help you with flashing. One more thing if you rooted your phone properly there should of been no need for you to go to the market and dl SU. So double check and make sure its been rooted and you have S-off.
1 turn your phone off
2.press power button while holding the vol down button
3.check HBOot to say S-OFF - to ensure your rooted
i used urevoked and didnt seem to work. i had no su access. i then tried the adb method here with thte pc136img.zip that gave me 2.1.
when i try to run an ruu update i get error 170 usb connect.
anyway i can at least get back to stock?
thank you.
When did you buy your Evo?
If you just got it then unrEVOked will not work for you, you need to use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 root method
Also there is this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881747
read it before trying to root your phone and doing things that could brick your phone.
You also want to make sure the root method you are using is compatible with your hardware and hboot.....
Coming from the hero myself, it became clear quickly that there is a lot more to know about the evo vs what you need to know about the hero....
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
This is the thread for the newest unrevoked. If you have new hboot then this is what you need. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

I don't understand why it's not working for you. That's weird. I've only used unrevoked so I don't really have any ideas. Sorry.

thanks. i tried that method, i dont have su access. i ran the AutoRoot v2.2 - No PC36IMG_UD.zip autorun file.
I just got my EVO a few days ago. I'm such a noobie to this, my last phone was an old school Razr..
I downloaded unrevoked3, followed the program prompt and it pretty much did all the work to root the phone. I just had to plug the phone into the computer. (Prior to rooting make sure you download the driver onto your computer but go into "remove programs" in windows and uninstall the HTC sync that came with the driver. You must also enable USB Debugging on your phone.)
I then went to the Droid Market on the phone and downloaded the free version of Titanium Backup. After downloading, the app should appear on your phone. When you first click the app it will display an error. Something about no root access or busybox. Just ignore that and click the "Problems?" button on the app. The app will install busybox and fix itself and now your good to go. Titanium will clean out any of the bloatware you don't want.

If it still did not work then you need to restore the RUU like it says in the post. I ran the file with the PC36IMG, try that.
did you install the modified HBOOT driver on your PC?
