I wanna root my EVO and delete all the garbage I dont use. Ill stick with the stock rom for now.
With the hero, i would download rom manager, root the device, install clockwork and have at it - deleting the bloat.
is the process about the same with the evo? from my research, it seems that unrEVOked will root and flash a custom recovery. is this accurate?
thank you thank you
Former Hero user myself. I do believe unrevoked has been updated for the easy root method. If you want a stock rom you can use sprintlovers, or MikFroyo4.2 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026. 4.3 is themed, but 4.2 is mostly stock with some bloat taken out, but it's put on your sd card if you want to install any of them, and it has been re-engineered. Basically useless language support has been taken out of all the apks and it is very fast, especially for a sense rom.
Ideally, I just want to gain root access with the stock rom, then delete bloat.
Is this possible with unrEVOked?
thanks!
i ran unrEVOked, everything seems to have worked. it rebooted, now the unrevoked recovery reflash tool reads, 'waiting for reboot'.
my phone rebooted and i installed superuser from the market. I dont have SU access via adb. i havent tried the phone method because i prefer adb. im gonna attempt it now.
thanks for your help more would be appreciated
edit: i actually dont even know how to boot into recovery on the evo. i tried home+power. gonna hit google.

Please before you go to far read up on Amon_RA/Clcokwork recovery and some of the issues that have come up recently. Also if you are a basic noob to this I suggest you download Rom manager to help you with flashing. One more thing if you rooted your phone properly there should of been no need for you to go to the market and dl SU. So double check and make sure its been rooted and you have S-off.
1 turn your phone off
2.press power button while holding the vol down button
3.check HBOot to say S-OFF - to ensure your rooted
i used urevoked and didnt seem to work. i had no su access. i then tried the adb method here with thte pc136img.zip that gave me 2.1.
when i try to run an ruu update i get error 170 usb connect.
anyway i can at least get back to stock?
thank you.
When did you buy your Evo?
If you just got it then unrEVOked will not work for you, you need to use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448 root method
Also there is this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881747
read it before trying to root your phone and doing things that could brick your phone.
You also want to make sure the root method you are using is compatible with your hardware and hboot.....
Coming from the hero myself, it became clear quickly that there is a lot more to know about the evo vs what you need to know about the hero....
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
This is the thread for the newest unrevoked. If you have new hboot then this is what you need. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

I don't understand why it's not working for you. That's weird. I've only used unrevoked so I don't really have any ideas. Sorry.

thanks. i tried that method, i dont have su access. i ran the AutoRoot v2.2 - No PC36IMG_UD.zip autorun file.
I just got my EVO a few days ago. I'm such a noobie to this, my last phone was an old school Razr..
I downloaded unrevoked3, followed the program prompt and it pretty much did all the work to root the phone. I just had to plug the phone into the computer. (Prior to rooting make sure you download the driver onto your computer but go into "remove programs" in windows and uninstall the HTC sync that came with the driver. You must also enable USB Debugging on your phone.)
I then went to the Droid Market on the phone and downloaded the free version of Titanium Backup. After downloading, the app should appear on your phone. When you first click the app it will display an error. Something about no root access or busybox. Just ignore that and click the "Problems?" button on the app. The app will install busybox and fix itself and now your good to go. Titanium will clean out any of the bloatware you don't want.

If it still did not work then you need to restore the RUU like it says in the post. I ran the file with the PC36IMG, try that.
did you install the modified HBOOT driver on your PC?

it says hero - 2.1
stock heros have 1.5 "modified" or something like that, right?
so why does it say 2.1?
and is it dangerous to try, and what's the result of this type of rooting?
EG: if I run this on my wife's stock 1.5:
what will happen if it works?
what if it doesn't work?
I did the manually created goldcard method on my hero a ways back and don't want to do that again nor do I remember how I did it now. hoping this easy click method works, but not sure I want to try and bork my wife's phone.
Don`t know if it works at hero with Android 1.5.
Maybe you can test it!
After this, you should have root only.
Try and install apps from market, which requires root and you
can see if it works right!

so it will add root to the stock OS if I'm understanding right?
hmmm.... would it add a superuser app as well then? I mean, it must have to.
interesting... and then in theory I'd be able to flash a recovery onto her phone and do a full nandroid backup, and then flash froyo...
hmmmmm....
EDIT: oh, I suppose asking her first would be good or I'll be getting a divorce in the near future.
After Rooted you have to flash Recovery Image!
It`s X10 but should the same at the hero:
http://techie-buzz.com/mobile-news/x10-root-universal-androot.html
But don`t know if it works with hero and Android 1.5!
works perfectly on the hero. but doesn't include a SU app or busybox, so next step is download free superuser app from market and install it. that will let you install and run "rom manager" from clockworkmod, my personal favorite recovery, but amon-ra can no doubt be installed without too much trouble using the same app.
you're set, just need to wipe all and flash a new rom now. can't use titanium on stock rom without busybox so use "applist" apk from market to make text file list of installed apps so you can reinstall them after flashign a new rom. after that titanium will work great obviously.

You can try this, I personally did it with adb so I honestly have no idea how well it works. Hell I'm I can't even say it works for sure.

You obviously did not read through that thread, it was shown to not work. That root method doesn't involve the flashing of the engineering bootloader, which is required to be able to flash self signed update packages in recovery, such as clockwork recovery. People ran into errors because they couldn't flash clockwork. They also couldn't flash the engineering build because they were not rooted.
So, in short, to the OP, no, you cannot root without ADB. You CAN download an app that will give you temporary root, but that will only allow you to use applications that require root, it won't allow you to actually flash a custom ROM. For that you need to follow nbetcher's root method, which is in the android dev section, it's a fairly obvious thread in capital letters near the top
What's the best method to root being on software version 1.32.651.6?
I read through the sticky and it looks like the two popular options are the new AutoRoot method, and using Unrevoked. It says the AutoRoot method will work for my version, so I'm assuming that is the best route to take.
I was curious if there is a manual way of rooting? I'd enjoy actually doing the steps to get root access.
If not, then would you recommend I upgrade to the latest software version and then root? Or go ahead and use the AutoRoot method with my current software version?
Thanks!

With your version you should be able to use Toast's method. You can find it here:
[TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/
[TUTORIAL] How To Unlock Nand Protection ~ Part-2 [Gaining RW Access/Full Root]
you're lucky (make sure your bootloader hasn't been updated and sw version downgraded, I suppose). but if your setup is really that old, use fastRX8 method (here on xda). I used it back when I had your version, and didn't even have to touch a computer to do it.
he's got a great thread and video. took me about 30 min (drunk), being a total android noob (and it has nothing to do with adb even)
Thanks for the replies. Out of those two options posted, I think I'll go with Toast's method. I do remember reading through that method back when I got my phone and was considering rooting. I'll look through those to links and see if it all makes sense.
After rooting and doing a nandroid backup with that method, is it still recommended to backup my 4G RSA keys? (using this method from the sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900)

Yes it is always a great idea to backup your wimax RSA keys. It is also a great idea to do a full backup right after you finish rooting before you change anything so you can always restore if anything gets messed up or lost. I use Amon-Ra v2.3 as most say it is more stable than Clockwork recovery but that is just an opinion.

You place the file I attached on the root of your sdcard, then update it, reboot, and reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3. You can use rom manager to flash it, but its only on version 2.2.
The way I did it, and remember I am on a newer version of the Evo than you, but I used Unrevoked v3.32 to root the phone, I already knew about adb. Then I followed the directions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Also that is the creators page so any update should show up there.

So I just completed part 2, and got to the point where it says to come here and get the latest radios. Is this a necessary step if I restored my nandroid backup from before step 2?
If so, then is this where i need to go to get the radios? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=latest+radio
And lastly, I'm having a hard time finding install instructions for these.
Thanks!
Just did a full backup with Amon-Ra v2.3, now time to store those safely somewhere and look into flashing a rom! Thinking I will start with CM7 RC4
Figured I'd just keep updating this thread with everything I've done so far.
Did a second nandroid backup with just wimax.
In addition just backed up the wimax rsa key using the following procedure:

Ok I'm confused. Titanium Backup is saying that I'm not rooted? Hmm...
Well I don't know what happened, but I'm guessing that my nandroid restore at some point removed root? Just a guess. I'm gonna start over...
So I've been confusing S-OFF meaning that I didn't have root/nand, thinking that "S" stood for Superuser. Man... lol

Those are the ones, after you finish flashing it tell the recovery to reboot and it will finish loading them then. Make sure you do not pull your battery during it and you'll be ok.
Another option is to get the PC36IMG of Sprint Lovers and flash that through the bootloader, that is usually the safest way.

yep, the S in the bootloader stands for Security and refers to your NAND (system/boot/recovery) lock. You'll have that as long as you have the engineering hboot so make sure you don't update it.
With Titanium Backup just start the app and click on problems there you will see install busybox. After that installs it will want you to restart the app and everything should run then.
Guys
need some quick help. Followed the AFTV guides to the letter (actually did a complete root, downgrade on another device already) but now my FTV downloaded an update and I lost root.
I still have CWM as my recovery. Can I just adb push another ROM that is pre-rooted?
help!
thanks in advance?

If you have CWM still working properly it might work. I would give it a shot. If CWM is broken, the it should just error and do nothing.
You must be running an older version of cwm for it to have even done that. Just flashing superuser through recovery should get you root back.
everything seems to be ok...it only downloaded the latest ROM but didn't seem to install it. I didn't lose root. actually I ran the command to block OTA and all is good again. Now onto XBMC!!
Ok, I know this is the m8 thread 1st off. I own a m7, S-off'd, unlocked boot loader, rooted, etc. I have ABSOLUTELY NO ACCESS TO A PC FOR QUITE AWHILE, SO PROBABLY NO ACCESS TO ADB/FASTBOOT for me.
I am prepping for when the Lollisense update comes for the m7, and I have everything figured out as far as getting back to stock (STOCK Rom & recovery, so I'm OTA-READY) & taking the OTA .
Now here is the problem, Once I'm updated to lollipop/Sense, with no access to a pc, is there any TEMP-ROOT that will work? Long story short, plan was to Use something like TowelRoot or Weaksauce 2 to Temp-root JUST LONG ENOUGH TO USE Flashify to flash TWRP back onto the phone and then flash supersu to gain perm-root again.
Now here's my question/ favor to ask anybody with a M8 and on the stock Lollisense Rom- Can anybody test out WeakSauce 2 or TowelRoot to let me know if either of those Will work on lollisense, or does Anybody know the answer to this???
Again, I know this isn't the M7 thread, but the M7 hasn't gotten Lollisense yet, so nobody in our thread can test.
Any help and/or feedback would be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED !

You can flash TWRP using terminal emulator.
Put it in the root of your internal storage (by in the root I mean not in a folder) and rename it to twrp.img
Launch terminal emulator, then type this, hitting enter after each line:
su
dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p34
You don't need a PC or Towelroot.

Dude If this is true, u just SOLVED my WHOLE PROBLEM..
..But, 1 last question.. I've never had to use a Terminal emulator on the phone, Doesn't it require root access? Or no?
Because once I flash on stock Rom and recovery and then take the ota update, I'll be stock without root and no pc. So if you're saying I can use Terminal Emulator WITHOUT root to flash TWRP so that I'll BE ABLE to flash root , THEN U JUST MADE MY DAY

While it might have not been true, you don't need to go back to stock to take the OTA because you are S-Off. That is one of the best features of being S-Off. Go SuperCID and flash the new firmware through hboot or ADB.

That's the WHOLE problem... My kid fried my pc and now have no access to adb or fastboot. Without a pc, I've completely figured out how to get back the stock odex Rom, flashify to flash stock recovery, take OTA, ETC.
BUT, that's where the brick wall comes. Once I take the lollisense update, ill n without root, on STOCK recovery, and won't have any access to adb / fastboot, so I'll not be able to get root back Unless there comes a temp root method that will work on lollisense, (which seems highly unlikely).... Cuz if I have temp root, I could just use it to use flashify to flash TWRP back on , then supersu... Hmmm, hopefully 1 of my m7 brothers will post a rooted lollisense nandroid 4 me
