E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

So trying to apply the 8/1 update (skipping earlier leaks) and am getting this when loading the update.zip in recovery
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command (this comes up before even trying to run the update)
--Install From sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I unrooted, reformatted, and get this problem when trying to flash the 8/1 radio.
I rerooted and navigated to the folder and command doesn't exist inside recovery. does anyone else have something in there?
any ideas?

First things first have you upgraded to a 2.xx radio yet?

I get that error. I know I'm naming them properly so that shouldn't be the problem.
Do I have to update using the original radio leaks first?

Turn off signature verification in clockwork mod recovery. It wont check for a signature and should proceed as normal. Btw, this should have been posted in either the leaks thread, or in general. Mods please move. Don't forget to search man. I kno I've seen this same problem at least a dozen times on this forum.

well you're trying to do all of this at the right time due to some hard work by unrEVOked we now have s-off and permanent nand unlock so this process should be quite painless.
Step 1: Apply the unrEVOked forever patch

Step 2: Flash a 2.xx radio

Step 3: You don't need to rename the 8/1 leak update.zip just download the zip file place it on the root of your SD card reboot into clockwork recovery choose the option which allows you to pick a zip from your SD card find the 8/1 leak and select it.
Step 4: Reboot and enjoy.

EDIT: the link I provided for the radio no longer works however if you apply the unrevoked forever patch and then try to flash the leak it should update your radio there's a radio file within the leak now that you have s-off and nand unlock this should work.

I don't know if I want to use Forever yet since its supposed to be irreversible right?
As far as turning off signature verification in clockwork, I'm following the walkthrough in this link and it says you need to be unrooted to update the radio so I won't have clockwork to do that when I try updating.
or have things changed since then and can you now flash radios while rooted?

yes the unrevoked forever is permanent however it's going to make things just like what you're trying to do a lot easier. I recommend it. The only reason we had to downgrade before to upgrade our radio was because of the s-off and nand issues the unrevoked forever fixes those problems so we never have to go through that mumbo jumbo again.

I definitely see the benefit of using it, but there is still a chance right now that I may bring my phone into a verizon store. In the future when I'm more certain I will more than likely use it, just for now I'd prefer to avoid it while I can.

I am in the same boat man, and know what you mean about irreversible. here is what you do.
First off USE TITANIUM BACKUP TO BACK UP APPS AND DATA!!
downgrade to stock by placing the stock image (found Here and use these steps to install:
1. Place PB31IMG.zip on root of SD Card
2. Reboot
3. Hold Down Vol Down into HBoot
4. It will ask if you want to update
5. Select Up to accept
6. Wait..........
7. it'll finish updating and ask to reboot
8. select vol + to choose yes
9. Done
Next Run Unrevoked 3.1 found Here (this will root and flash coustom recovery on your stock image) Now your Incredible is as fresh as the day you bought it, but with root and custom recovery.
You will now be able to use run Clockwork and install the 8-1 Froyo leak found here
When it is all over, you can find Titanium backup again in the market and use it to re install missing Apps and App Data (DO NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM DATA! JUST APPS AND APP DATA!

I just applied 7/27 and that worked, so now I'm going to root again.

Its best to go from stock image to 8-1 leak. Follow instructions at the last post on page 1.

did you read what I just wrote at all?

ok, so back to stock. Root, then 8/1 leak through clockwork.
I must have rooted and gone back to stock at least 3 times today trying to figure out the proper procedure. Not to mention countless times to recovery.

just follow the guide for the 7/27 leak and dont skip any steps that it says and you will be fine.

Conflicting info doesn't help...

ugh, and after i already installed 7/27. the usual method for going back to stock isn't working now ether.
just went ahead and am now install 8/1 over 7/27, will see what happens...

8/1 installed fine, everything seems to be ok. Waiting on Skyraider 2.5 before I flash.
Is there anyway to downgrade the radio and redo all this without using the 7/27 leak? or is it not worth it?
EDIT: will a nandroid backup restore the older radio if I made it before all this nonsense?

Successfully I downgraded Evo from 2.2 to 2.1 android. and I want to upgrade it a gin to 2.2.
not only downgraded but also rooted 2.1 Android.
I get error message Error code: 1012
and when I download the official 2.2 it prosed but after a while its stuck!
what to do?

You need to make sure that nand is unlocked. Do Simple Root found in the dev forums or complete Part 2 of Toast's How to Root Guide also in the dev forums.

if you used the unrevoked way for both root and forever then you can't upgrade, you can download the ota all you want, but it will not install, which leads me to believe those of us who rooted this way will never be able to except a ota, so we might have to just rely on custom ROM's, which are better anyways.
I'd recommend Netarchy's HTC OTA Froyo 2.2 final build, and don't forget a custom kernel as well to go with that to make it really perform, also recommend Netarchy's 4.1.9 cfs kernel.

All of the instructions are in the forums. Read and follow the steps. You need to put in some of your own effort. No one is going to do it for you.

it's really easy with installing roms, they all come with instructions, which are clear and simple, mostly just boot into recovery once you get that taken care of, do a factory data wipe, and install rom that is stored on your sd card in the download file, once you do it, you see how easy and simple it is, just make a nandroid backup first before doing the factory reset IMO.

Actually I did something else and it worked.
1- copied OTA official update to SD-card
2- waped the device
3- install the official update from SD-Card,
4- Restart
5- Delete user data from SD-card
it work fin I have the Superuser Icon, but I cannot access to the root as before, its OK as far as my device is back.

What's the best method to root being on software version 1.32.651.6?
I read through the sticky and it looks like the two popular options are the new AutoRoot method, and using Unrevoked. It says the AutoRoot method will work for my version, so I'm assuming that is the best route to take.
I was curious if there is a manual way of rooting? I'd enjoy actually doing the steps to get root access.
If not, then would you recommend I upgrade to the latest software version and then root? Or go ahead and use the AutoRoot method with my current software version?

With your version you should be able to use Toast's method. You can find it here:

you're lucky (make sure your bootloader hasn't been updated and sw version downgraded, I suppose). but if your setup is really that old, use fastRX8 method (here on xda). I used it back when I had your version, and didn't even have to touch a computer to do it.
he's got a great thread and video. took me about 30 min (drunk), being a total android noob (and it has nothing to do with adb even)

Thanks for the replies. Out of those two options posted, I think I'll go with Toast's method. I do remember reading through that method back when I got my phone and was considering rooting. I'll look through those to links and see if it all makes sense.

Yes it is always a great idea to backup your wimax RSA keys. It is also a great idea to do a full backup right after you finish rooting before you change anything so you can always restore if anything gets messed up or lost. I use Amon-Ra v2.3 as most say it is more stable than Clockwork recovery but that is just an opinion.

You place the file I attached on the root of your sdcard, then update it, reboot, and reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3. You can use rom manager to flash it, but its only on version 2.2.

The way I did it, and remember I am on a newer version of the Evo than you, but I used Unrevoked v3.32 to root the phone, I already knew about adb. Then I followed the directions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Also that is the creators page so any update should show up there.

So I just completed part 2, and got to the point where it says to come here and get the latest radios. Is this a necessary step if I restored my nandroid backup from before step 2?

Just did a full backup with Amon-Ra v2.3, now time to store those safely somewhere and look into flashing a rom! Thinking I will start with CM7 RC4

Figured I'd just keep updating this thread with everything I've done so far.
Did a second nandroid backup with just wimax.
In addition just backed up the wimax rsa key using the following procedure:

Those are the ones, after you finish flashing it tell the recovery to reboot and it will finish loading them then. Make sure you do not pull your battery during it and you'll be ok.
Another option is to get the PC36IMG of Sprint Lovers and flash that through the bootloader, that is usually the safest way.

yep, the S in the bootloader stands for Security and refers to your NAND (system/boot/recovery) lock. You'll have that as long as you have the engineering hboot so make sure you don't update it.

With Titanium Backup just start the app and click on problems there you will see install busybox. After that installs it will want you to restart the app and everything should run then.

Anyone in the US who woke up this morning and immediately tried Settings -> Software update -> Check new was greeted with a surprise from Verizon: Gingerbread available via OTA! It's a big update, so be sure you have a nice, strong, reliable 3G connection before attempting the upgrade.
My selfish question for the experts is: Now that I've performed the dance of joy at achieving S-OFF and root thanks to Alpharev, will I lose my happiness (S-OFF and/or root) if I allow Verizon to update my Android OS OTA? Are there any special precautions I should follow before, during or after the update? I already have a post-S-OFF Nandroid backup. Is that enough of a safety net?

There is a sticky thread in this forum about the GB RUU/OTA and also some threads in the General section (which is where this post should have been made). You may be putting your AlphaRevX S-OFF at risk by trying to install the OTA. In addition, before you can even attempt to install the OTA, you must remove ClockworkMod and install the original recovery.img from the Froyo ROM, so you would lose your 'safety net' backup, too.
There is already a fully rooted and de-bloated version of the ROM that you can safely flash using CWM and retain both root and S-OFF.

recovery from the froyo ROM. GB 2.18.605.3 RUU leak whatever. just get back to stock recovery any of those from HTC will work. but you MAY lose root. and you MAY not be able to get it back other than XTC clip. Cheers.

Some of this is incorrect,
It is possible you may lose root but you will not lose your s-off. It's a higher version of the bootloader so it should not be overwritten. I just learned that the OTA won't even install without the stock recovery.
However I'm with tpbklake, I would personally just install a ROM that's based off of the new OTA update. No difference (minus the bloat of course) plus you'll still have root.

all your base are belong to verizon!
well, you could try booting into recovery and starting all over again via clockwork.
if it's stuck in a loop, pull the battery, put it back in and hold down VOLUME DOWN + POWER to go into recovery

If you've rooted or plan to root, do not accept or bother with the OTA whatsoever.
The hard work has already been done, just install the ROM I put together.

I know I did something stupid at some point I have a backup so will restore that and try again - just thought there might have been a shortcut - like removing a file.

the OTA will not install without the stock recovery. Sounds like you have CWM recovery on your phone.
pull the battery out
pop everything back in, hold vol down and then power. It'll load to the bootloader, once there it'll check for a P32IMG file name after that you'll have the option to select recovery.
you might want to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache within recovery before installing the new rmk rom again.
Which ROM did you come from?

I came from CM7 back to stock (where it downloaded the OTA) and then I tried to RMK. I have Nandroid backups so will just try a complete wipe and then try RMK again.

so lets say you crack you're screen or something and need to get a new phone via insurance. couldn't you download this ota and then lose s-off and root so they would have no idea you did it in the first place?

Replies earlier in this thread suggest that you'd first have to restore the original Recovery image, replacing, CWM, before you could load the updated OTA update. At that point, you'd be running GB, unrooted, but /may/ still have S-OFF.

That is correct. If anyone remembers the DInc1 we had to flash stock radio, s-on file, stock RUU. As of now we have NO s-on file to flash.

Just wondering if anyone received the OTA and has it laying around and could post it, so the ROMs can be updated with these fixes (especially the first one!).
Also, does anyone know the method for applying an OTA to a previous stock ROM (not on the device), so that the patched files get appropriately updated? I've been wondering how that's done for a while. It's usually a while before the full ROM leaks, so I've always wondered how it's done. I bet xHausx would know . . . I wonder if you need Linux to do it?

I've been waiting for this as well. Voice recognition is a big one for me. Ninjawolf has been looking for a copy so he can do his thing and post it, but last I saw he had not been able to find one either.

I am on stock and have not see it yet when I check under updates. Not sure if it would wreck root, but I was just curious to see if it was there.

Thanks for checking. It shouldn't S-ON your device, as I've read by the few that got it that it comes with the same HBOOT as the previous OTA (2.16). It might, however, take away root, though if it does, you'd just need to install Superuser.

Just wondering if anyone received the OTA and has it laying around and could post it, so the ROMs can be updated with these fixes (especially the first one!).
Also, does anyone know the method for applying an OTA to a previous stock ROM (not on the device), so that the patched files get appropriately updated? I've been wondering how that's done for a while. It's usually a while before the full ROM leaks, so I've always wondered how it's done. I bet xHausx would know . . . I wonder if you need Linux to do it?

You need to be S-OFF and have an old stock recovery. The new one will not let you update if not installing from over the air. Download the recovery that I attached to this post and change the name to PC36IMG. This recovery will only be used for the flash, and will then be replaced by the latest stock one.
Without being over detailed here,
Download the OTA from
http://www.mediafire.com/?bjxvuyc1mupcyzc
Then change the name of that file to update.
Copy both zip files (PC36IMG and update) to your SD card and install the PC36IMG file from your Bootloader.
After install, boot into RECOVERY. At the exclamation point, hold the volume up (not down) and power buttons at the same time. Then install update from SD card, or whatever it says.
Once you're done, you can always go to
http://www.mediafire.com/?gijd69zb5222w
to get your clockworkmod or Amon-RA back.
Hope that helps someone out there.

I was hoping to patch the ROM without flashing it ....
i.e. put together an updated flashable stock ROM.
(using Android kitchen or some other means)

i can do it, it' s a pretty simple concept. your sure thats the ota, b4 i go packing away a flashable rom.

Yes, it does appear to definitely be the OTA. I've already downloaded and looked at it. I just don't know how to apply all of the patch files included therein.

Does this update fix/update the bluetooth stack?

I have some questions that I'm hoping to get verified.
I was previously on the Sprint unrooted stock 2.2 Froyo build and did the OTA 4.24.651.1 Android 2.3 update. Then I performed S-OFF using the Revolution developer preview tool followed by rooting the phone by installing SuperUser via Recovery. The only thing I've done since then is remove apps I didn't want.
Now this 4.53.651.1 OTA update came out, and I know I shouldn't try updating the rooted phone with it. I don't want to completely flash/wipe the phone either. I just want to learn of the way to update my rooted 4.24.651.1 to 4.53.651.1 while still retaining S-OFF and root.
Do the steps by shortydoggg in post #9 of this thread perform an update as opposed to a complete flash/wipe? And if so, will S-OFF and root be maintained?

Update:
Okay, so I restored the stock recovery according to post #9 of this thread. And continuing with the instructions in that post, I was able to install the linked 4.53.651.1 update file.
After that I lost root, but all it took was to run the Revolutionary tool again to get custom recovery back. Then I just flashed the Superuser ZIP file once more, rebooted, and everything was rooted again.
Now the phone still has S-OFF and it has 4.53.651.1 rooted.

Easier approach:
Download the already rooted copy here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238959
Reboot into recovery.
Make a nandroid backup.
Flash update. (In CWM Install zip from SD Card > Choose Zip > browse to downloaded file > Install; likely similar in AR).
Optionally, download the new radio (Post #26 in same thread). Place that in the root of the SD card and reboot to the bootloader; it will install automatically.
