E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

So trying to apply the 8/1 update (skipping earlier leaks) and am getting this when loading the update.zip in recovery
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command (this comes up before even trying to run the update)
--Install From sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I unrooted, reformatted, and get this problem when trying to flash the 8/1 radio.
I rerooted and navigated to the folder and command doesn't exist inside recovery. does anyone else have something in there?
any ideas?

First things first have you upgraded to a 2.xx radio yet?

I get that error. I know I'm naming them properly so that shouldn't be the problem.
Do I have to update using the original radio leaks first?

Turn off signature verification in clockwork mod recovery. It wont check for a signature and should proceed as normal. Btw, this should have been posted in either the leaks thread, or in general. Mods please move. Don't forget to search man. I kno I've seen this same problem at least a dozen times on this forum.

well you're trying to do all of this at the right time due to some hard work by unrEVOked we now have s-off and permanent nand unlock so this process should be quite painless.
Step 1: Apply the unrEVOked forever patch

Step 2: Flash a 2.xx radio

Step 3: You don't need to rename the 8/1 leak update.zip just download the zip file place it on the root of your SD card reboot into clockwork recovery choose the option which allows you to pick a zip from your SD card find the 8/1 leak and select it.
Step 4: Reboot and enjoy.

EDIT: the link I provided for the radio no longer works however if you apply the unrevoked forever patch and then try to flash the leak it should update your radio there's a radio file within the leak now that you have s-off and nand unlock this should work.

I don't know if I want to use Forever yet since its supposed to be irreversible right?
As far as turning off signature verification in clockwork, I'm following the walkthrough in this link and it says you need to be unrooted to update the radio so I won't have clockwork to do that when I try updating.
or have things changed since then and can you now flash radios while rooted?

yes the unrevoked forever is permanent however it's going to make things just like what you're trying to do a lot easier. I recommend it. The only reason we had to downgrade before to upgrade our radio was because of the s-off and nand issues the unrevoked forever fixes those problems so we never have to go through that mumbo jumbo again.

I definitely see the benefit of using it, but there is still a chance right now that I may bring my phone into a verizon store. In the future when I'm more certain I will more than likely use it, just for now I'd prefer to avoid it while I can.

I am in the same boat man, and know what you mean about irreversible. here is what you do.
First off USE TITANIUM BACKUP TO BACK UP APPS AND DATA!!
downgrade to stock by placing the stock image (found Here and use these steps to install:
1. Place PB31IMG.zip on root of SD Card
2. Reboot
3. Hold Down Vol Down into HBoot
4. It will ask if you want to update
5. Select Up to accept
6. Wait..........
7. it'll finish updating and ask to reboot
8. select vol + to choose yes
9. Done
Next Run Unrevoked 3.1 found Here (this will root and flash coustom recovery on your stock image) Now your Incredible is as fresh as the day you bought it, but with root and custom recovery.
You will now be able to use run Clockwork and install the 8-1 Froyo leak found here
When it is all over, you can find Titanium backup again in the market and use it to re install missing Apps and App Data (DO NOT RESTORE ANY SYSTEM DATA! JUST APPS AND APP DATA!

I just applied 7/27 and that worked, so now I'm going to root again.

Its best to go from stock image to 8-1 leak. Follow instructions at the last post on page 1.

did you read what I just wrote at all?

ok, so back to stock. Root, then 8/1 leak through clockwork.
I must have rooted and gone back to stock at least 3 times today trying to figure out the proper procedure. Not to mention countless times to recovery.

just follow the guide for the 7/27 leak and dont skip any steps that it says and you will be fine.

Conflicting info doesn't help...

ugh, and after i already installed 7/27. the usual method for going back to stock isn't working now ether.
just went ahead and am now install 8/1 over 7/27, will see what happens...

8/1 installed fine, everything seems to be ok. Waiting on Skyraider 2.5 before I flash.
Is there anyway to downgrade the radio and redo all this without using the 7/27 leak? or is it not worth it?
EDIT: will a nandroid backup restore the older radio if I made it before all this nonsense?

yes you would lose root.
you are aware that if you install it you may never be able to root your phone again? well at least until one of the devs here finds a way.
i'm sure that update will get rooted and added to the ROMs soon if they haven't been already.
but other than that if you don't care then you should be find installing it.

You shouldn't try to install OTA updates to rooted phones. It usually won't work.
If you want the new version you can either install an RUU with the official version and then root, or you can install a newer rooted stock ROM through recovery.

The easiest thing for you to do is install a new custom ROM that is based on the new version (mine and a couple of others).

Reboot into recovery, apply zip from sd card, toggle signature verification so its off, the update zip is downloaded to your sd cards download folder. Apply it. Then use unrevoked to root your phone again.

The ROM you are on has been updated with the latest OTA now so I'm not sure why you want to go another way than just flashing that ?

Is it a fully safe way to try install OTA update over the rooted ROM? I have branded ROM rooted using unrEVOked and I would like to try to install OTA update this way.

it didnt work for me, but if u try please tell me, it shouldnt screw up your phone.

I'm not so sure about that. I've looked into OTA update downloaded into sd-card and it contains:
- system updates (new files, patches and so on)
- recovery img
- hboot update
- radio image
So let's assume that I toogle verification process (turn it off). OTA update will install over rooted ROM. After this, I have new recovery (because OTA update contains it).
I can see possibility of bricking my phone, when following situation appears:
- OS doesn't start-up (fell into boot-loop, whatever)
- recovery is back to stock, so no possibility to restore from nandroid backups
What do you think about that? Can someone confirm this is safe/dangerous?

Barthand, relax, i tried this, and i just rebooted my phone and it was fine. if you don't want to do it, then don't, but don't fret. it didn't work for me but it didn't screw up my phone either, now back to the main problem does anyone else have any solutions to install ota on a rooted phone.

Im pretty sure it will take if you've got factory recovery. It doesn't seem to be as secure as the vaunted froyo update was.
And yes, you can simply reflash clockwork, but from bootloader, as a PB32IMG.zip
S-Off is wonderful.

When you get the update nag, you ignore it, flash the stock recovery, which I am in process of getting now, then apply the patch, then reflash Clockwork.

I'm still pretty new to this, how should I go about getting the stock recovery and flashing it? All I've done is use Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever, then install ClockworkMod via Rom Manager, so pretty much everything has been done for me :/

I've asked in a couple places for the stock recovery. If/when I get it I will post a short how to.
I just don't want to lose everything on my phone to get this update.
I did a NAND backup and installed the update manually and there are several improvements I would like to have, such as significantly reduced charging time. But right now, without a custom ROM, the only way to get it is the RUU, and that wipes the phone.

Having this issue with somebody else. I'm not sure if you can name it PB31IMG.zip or not, but you can try. Worst care, it doesn't load that way either.
I'm helping somebody else with the same issue right now, but his phone is totally hosed up, so I'm taking him back to stock 2.2 first. He has a good Titanium backup, so he won't lose anything.
If anybody else knows why the loader might ignore an update.zip please let me know.

Okay, I have confirmed that you may perform "install sd/update.zip" from ROM Manager. It does work.

I'm still confused; do I have to have the stock recovery to do this?

I am not sure of these steps because I have read the threads from here and the post you put on Android forums as well and both threads are mentioning some issues.
Some posts state payload-update is unneccesary.
Some posts state that these steps are failing.
The post I am most concerned about states that "Rooted STOCK ONLY" means you can't have removed any bloatware either before doing this update. I have several apps removed, do I have to restore them before I take these steps?
Also not sure why folks are asking if they must have stock recovery. The instructions don't say anything about that.
I have noticed that the nagging has stoped on my dinc however if I go to the about update section in setup I find it states that the update has been successfully downloaded and is ready to install. Will this try to install the next time I boot the phone or is OK to boot?
Edit: Forgot to mention Some posts state that the process fails and you have to wait a few hours to continue, that's confusing and not in the instructions.
In summary
1) Do you have to re-install bloatware to make these steps work?
2) Is payload-update really necessary? What does each install in these steps do?
3) Does the process fail at some point if you don't allow the device to sit for a while, if so what step should you let it sit? It would be nice if someone understood this part also, anyone have a possible reason for this requirement?

I was asking if stock recovery is required because I've been told that OTAs won't install correctly if you don't. I was wondering if that still applied.

I got the update notification tonight and I clicked for it to install, and it counted down from ten seconds and said it was going to reboot and install updates, but it never did reboot. I'm guessing this is because I have unrevoked recovery? My gf's non rooted phone did get the update tonight as well, and hers installed without a hitch.

Install initiated through clockwork halted on vznav.apk, so I'm guessing it needs the original bloatware. I know that I should have backed it up but I guess my hatred of VZ pushiness got the better of me. Anyone have a work-around?

I guess we need someone to share the bloat apk's; I removed some of them without backing up, too :/

htc evo with 2.1-update1 softwar will not charge or mount usb. is there an ota update

i finally got my phone to boot up with 2.1-update1 software after rooting issues. It found an ota update. I downloaded it but the battery was too low to install. will this fix the issues of my phone not charging and my phone saying sd card was removed?

If you're rooted with a custom recovery the OTA won't take. You need to flash an updated ROM instead to get current. If the issues you're having are software related then it *should* clear them up.

where can i find an updated rom? does this mean i need to remove mu current pc36img.zip recovery image and replace it with a new one naming it the same thing?

Most of the ROMs are flashable zips from recovery. I think the only one in PC36IMG.zip form is the sprint lovers ROM that updates everything, which is the one that I would recommend flashing. If you go with that one then yes, you need to delete the PC36IMG.zip that's on your sd card and replace it with that one. Check the development section, it should be on the first or second page. It will wipe all your data so be sure to back everything up!

Anyone in the US who woke up this morning and immediately tried Settings -> Software update -> Check new was greeted with a surprise from Verizon: Gingerbread available via OTA! It's a big update, so be sure you have a nice, strong, reliable 3G connection before attempting the upgrade.
My selfish question for the experts is: Now that I've performed the dance of joy at achieving S-OFF and root thanks to Alpharev, will I lose my happiness (S-OFF and/or root) if I allow Verizon to update my Android OS OTA? Are there any special precautions I should follow before, during or after the update? I already have a post-S-OFF Nandroid backup. Is that enough of a safety net?

There is a sticky thread in this forum about the GB RUU/OTA and also some threads in the General section (which is where this post should have been made). You may be putting your AlphaRevX S-OFF at risk by trying to install the OTA. In addition, before you can even attempt to install the OTA, you must remove ClockworkMod and install the original recovery.img from the Froyo ROM, so you would lose your 'safety net' backup, too.
There is already a fully rooted and de-bloated version of the ROM that you can safely flash using CWM and retain both root and S-OFF.

recovery from the froyo ROM. GB 2.18.605.3 RUU leak whatever. just get back to stock recovery any of those from HTC will work. but you MAY lose root. and you MAY not be able to get it back other than XTC clip. Cheers.

Some of this is incorrect,
It is possible you may lose root but you will not lose your s-off. It's a higher version of the bootloader so it should not be overwritten. I just learned that the OTA won't even install without the stock recovery.
However I'm with tpbklake, I would personally just install a ROM that's based off of the new OTA update. No difference (minus the bloat of course) plus you'll still have root.

all your base are belong to verizon!
well, you could try booting into recovery and starting all over again via clockwork.
if it's stuck in a loop, pull the battery, put it back in and hold down VOLUME DOWN + POWER to go into recovery

If you've rooted or plan to root, do not accept or bother with the OTA whatsoever.
The hard work has already been done, just install the ROM I put together.

I know I did something stupid at some point I have a backup so will restore that and try again - just thought there might have been a shortcut - like removing a file.

the OTA will not install without the stock recovery. Sounds like you have CWM recovery on your phone.
pull the battery out
pop everything back in, hold vol down and then power. It'll load to the bootloader, once there it'll check for a P32IMG file name after that you'll have the option to select recovery.
you might want to wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache within recovery before installing the new rmk rom again.
Which ROM did you come from?

I came from CM7 back to stock (where it downloaded the OTA) and then I tried to RMK. I have Nandroid backups so will just try a complete wipe and then try RMK again.

so lets say you crack you're screen or something and need to get a new phone via insurance. couldn't you download this ota and then lose s-off and root so they would have no idea you did it in the first place?

Replies earlier in this thread suggest that you'd first have to restore the original Recovery image, replacing, CWM, before you could load the updated OTA update. At that point, you'd be running GB, unrooted, but /may/ still have S-OFF.

That is correct. If anyone remembers the DInc1 we had to flash stock radio, s-on file, stock RUU. As of now we have NO s-on file to flash.
