I can't seem to find the answer
Should I do anything after I do the OTA Simple Root. I was thinking of flashing the original RUU and going through the 3 step simple root, assuming this method doesn't unlock NAND.
I am using the White HTC Evo if that matter
It seems like I am also having issues with Wireless Tether with this root method, maybe I should just RUU and start over

All simpleroot does is downgrade you from 1.47 to 1.17. You have to update to the stock rooted rom(guide below). You'll still have root/nand access with superuser permissions to allow wifi tether/titanium backup etc etc.
Guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
When it says to rename to PC36IMG.zip leave the .zip off. It won't read it with the .zip but leave the other file alone...don't rename it.

Ugh that is over my head...guess that I am not as savvy as I thought. I ended up just flashing the stock RUU and am going to run the 3 step simple root.

Which RUU did you flash? The 3 step simple root won't work with the latest RUU. You need the Simple root OTA.
EDIT: Which software version do you have as of now?

I ran the original RUU, which sent my software version back to 1.32.651.1
On another note, I get an unhandled exception error when running simple root step 2, saying file not found.
sorry, original being RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe

Okay, I'm kind of confused about something. Did you previously have root/nand access?
As for the simple root error, I have no clue. I haven't used that program. You'll have to post in that thread and ask someone.

I am not sure, I ran OTA simple root, but it somewhat confused me. Afterwards I installed Wireless Tether and it failed because of SU permissions. At that point I ran the RUU and was just going to start fresh. Everything is working fine, I just need to unlock NAND now.

Haha, you went forward then backward and now are moving to the same spot you was in earlier.
Where exactly are you right now as far as rooting? What have you done since flashing the RUU?

If simple root won't work follow these two guides.
Guide 1 - **you can skip the part with the evorecovery for now** - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
After that do this guide(part 2) - gives you unlocked nand - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835

Hey, you live and learn.
Now, since that worked. You need the latest stock root rom(1.47). Go back to post #3 I made and follow my word of advice and the guide.

Yeah, you can go to a custom rom if you want. If you do the stock route first you have the option to do a nandroid backup which saves everything to that point so if you run into trouble later on you can just restore everything back to that point(meaning no doing rooting then unrooting then rooting again lol)
IMO, I would do the stock rom first and wait a couple days as the devs are cooking up the latest roms for a release here soon. Then I would get a custom rom but that is me.
EDIT: I only mention the nandroid backup because I don't believe you have a recovery flashed yet. If you do have a recovery I would highly suggest making a backup of both nand and google propiertory(however you spell it).

After I flashed that rom that you provided me with in link three, the recovery changed. I assume that is normal. The option for nandroid backup was gone, but I did find NAND backup with I assume is the same thing. The NAND backup is in case anything ever goes wrong when I am flashing correct?
Thanks for the help.
Used to know how to run/install custom kitchens in the WinMo scene, but I'm still learning the ins and outs of Android.
I currently have a stock EVO running 2.1, which I ran unrevoked 3 on to get root (though from reading, I understand that's not "full" root). I only have Titanium Backup, & WiFi Tether, as those are the only real reason that I wanted root.
Now I would like to upgrade to Froyo, and given all the information, I just want to be sure I have the right method.
I understand that there currently is no way to root stock 2.2.
From my current start point, is this the proper way to upgrade?
1. Obtain full root by using Simpleroot 3-click method.
2. Download stock 2.2 rom, and load onto sd card, then rename to "update.zip"
3. reboot phone and let it install 2.2
Will this let me retain the root access, and allow me to reinstall the WiFi tether and Titanium Backup while running 2.2?
Thanks!

#1 - Excellent choice and right on the money!
#2 - Don't download ANY Froyo ROM that doesn't specifically say it's rooted! Also, DO NOT EVER accept any OTA updates. There are probably 8-10 2.2 Froyo ROMs in the dev section that are rooted for your delight, choose one you like the best.
#3 - Once you pick the ROM you want, put in the root of your sdcard. Then wipe followed by flash the zip from recovery.
As always, don't forget to nandroid backup FIRST!

Never use a stock provided ROM, got it .
Okay, so I have to use a pre-rooted custom ROM to retain root after the upgrade.
Going by the one in your signature, it looks like that's just the stock rom, that has been adjusted to retain root privlages, (which is what I'm looking for) is that correct?
Okay, having some trouble using the SimpleRoot method.
I've tried both the Simpleroot .1, and Simpleroot 1.47, both of them lead to the following error. When the prompt on the computer tells me to boot into bootloader, then wait for the device to prompt me to install update, I get the following message on my phone:
Code:
Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<VOL UP> Yes
<VOL DOWN> No
Am I already fully rooted when I ran unrEVOker?
don't like to bump, but would like any help if possible.
I'd like to upgrade to Froyo, and still retain my root.
Thanks!

enter "Main Version is older" in the forum search, and you can find a bunch of threads discussing this (as well as possible solutions)
I know this has been asked a few times, but reading through 100's of threads and posts, I still dont see it..
Has anyone come up with a procedure to root a stock 2.2 froyo evo while using a mac computer yet?
thanks so much!
It's the exact same method. There's an unrevoked 3 for mac and it works done. An updated mac will also already have the driver so you can skip that step.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
well, the unrevoked website has this posted, re: stock froyo 2.2..
"unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool
unrevoked3 is a tool to flash a custom recovery image to your Android phone. A custom recovery image allows you to perform advanced tasks on the system partition, such as flashing custom ROMs and taking a full backup of your phone (a “nandroid” backup). We recommend installing the custom recovery image for all users who want rooted phones.
It can be obtained from http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/.
At this time, unrevoked3 does NOT work on stock Froyo (Android 2.2) phones."
Is that true?
thanks
Yes. You'll want to find the root 2.2 thread in the dev forum. The steps are pretty much use an exploit to downgrade to 2.1 and then use unrevoked. I simply didn't cover all of the steps.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yeah, I have seen that thread; so, just use unrevoked 3 for mac to "start" the process, and just follow the thread once you have root?
I dont recall if there are any ".exe" files you need to run through the process, since you obviously cant run those on a Mac..
thanks!
Hi, I know this thread is old but I'm resurrecting it because it sort of applies to my situation.
Basically I want to know if I could use this to flash to an old stock update as opposed to a beta build. (I'm on an epic so I won't go into more details, just curious if I can use this basic methodology since I do not have any access to a windows machine and ODIN does not work on mac). Thank you!
What's the best method to root being on software version 1.32.651.6?
I read through the sticky and it looks like the two popular options are the new AutoRoot method, and using Unrevoked. It says the AutoRoot method will work for my version, so I'm assuming that is the best route to take.
I was curious if there is a manual way of rooting? I'd enjoy actually doing the steps to get root access.
If not, then would you recommend I upgrade to the latest software version and then root? Or go ahead and use the AutoRoot method with my current software version?
Thanks!

With your version you should be able to use Toast's method. You can find it here:
[TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/
[TUTORIAL] How To Unlock Nand Protection ~ Part-2 [Gaining RW Access/Full Root]
you're lucky (make sure your bootloader hasn't been updated and sw version downgraded, I suppose). but if your setup is really that old, use fastRX8 method (here on xda). I used it back when I had your version, and didn't even have to touch a computer to do it.
he's got a great thread and video. took me about 30 min (drunk), being a total android noob (and it has nothing to do with adb even)
Thanks for the replies. Out of those two options posted, I think I'll go with Toast's method. I do remember reading through that method back when I got my phone and was considering rooting. I'll look through those to links and see if it all makes sense.
After rooting and doing a nandroid backup with that method, is it still recommended to backup my 4G RSA keys? (using this method from the sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887900)

Yes it is always a great idea to backup your wimax RSA keys. It is also a great idea to do a full backup right after you finish rooting before you change anything so you can always restore if anything gets messed up or lost. I use Amon-Ra v2.3 as most say it is more stable than Clockwork recovery but that is just an opinion.

You place the file I attached on the root of your sdcard, then update it, reboot, and reboot into recovery and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3. You can use rom manager to flash it, but its only on version 2.2.
The way I did it, and remember I am on a newer version of the Evo than you, but I used Unrevoked v3.32 to root the phone, I already knew about adb. Then I followed the directions on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Also that is the creators page so any update should show up there.

So I just completed part 2, and got to the point where it says to come here and get the latest radios. Is this a necessary step if I restored my nandroid backup from before step 2?
If so, then is this where i need to go to get the radios? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=latest+radio
And lastly, I'm having a hard time finding install instructions for these.
Thanks!
Just did a full backup with Amon-Ra v2.3, now time to store those safely somewhere and look into flashing a rom! Thinking I will start with CM7 RC4
Figured I'd just keep updating this thread with everything I've done so far.
Did a second nandroid backup with just wimax.
In addition just backed up the wimax rsa key using the following procedure:

Ok I'm confused. Titanium Backup is saying that I'm not rooted? Hmm...
Well I don't know what happened, but I'm guessing that my nandroid restore at some point removed root? Just a guess. I'm gonna start over...
So I've been confusing S-OFF meaning that I didn't have root/nand, thinking that "S" stood for Superuser. Man... lol

Those are the ones, after you finish flashing it tell the recovery to reboot and it will finish loading them then. Make sure you do not pull your battery during it and you'll be ok.
Another option is to get the PC36IMG of Sprint Lovers and flash that through the bootloader, that is usually the safest way.

yep, the S in the bootloader stands for Security and refers to your NAND (system/boot/recovery) lock. You'll have that as long as you have the engineering hboot so make sure you don't update it.
With Titanium Backup just start the app and click on problems there you will see install busybox. After that installs it will want you to restart the app and everything should run then.
I had my WF S S-OFF today and now I am looking forward for rooting it. But I am a bit confused about something: I read a tut about rooting WF S 2.3.3 Gingerbread with Gingerbreak apk and I also found this rooting tut on this site : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275
I didn't tried before being sure to not mess up with my device. So does both methods work or which one is preferred?
Thanks a lot !
My bad, wrong post... linked to the same thread
Good luck dude!
Run gingerbreak, device will restart. You are then rooted.
so you say I don't have to install custom recovery and other stuff to root it ? Just gingerbreak will be okay?
Yes unless you want to have custom roms, then you will need to install a custom recovery which can be found in the development section.
Do I have a chance to restore back the original recovery in case of visiting service if phone gets messed up?
I am wondering if it's possible to use gingerbreak, then install nandroid get everything backed up (not sure if it backups the original recovery in the phone) then un apply gingerbreak and then install custom recovery.
So this way I can restore the backup with original rom and original recovery. Is something like that possible?
Edit :
Is it a good idea / practice to install Clockword Rom Manager as it will replace the recovery menu that I have to install for rooting the device? I am not planning to checkout roms for now, but was just wondering
Nandroid backup is in the custom recovery. You can remove everything if you just install a RUU. Also you cannot backup the original recovery as you need a custom recovery to backup your ROM.
So best practice is using tut on xda, then install Clockword Rom Manager to install nandroid also and take full backup and then play with the phone?
So did i get it correct ?
Yeah, but make sure you install the CWM from the development here or else it won't work. It's very simple to install it. As your phone is S-off you can install the recovery and then backup the original unrooted rom and keep that as a backup.
So
1-) I follow this tut : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195275
2-) Then install this CWM : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213229
3-) Then with using nandroid (I think it's included with CWM? I read something like that on a site) I will take backup of my whole phone (I still wonder how it will backup unrooted version of rom eventho it's rooted)
4-) Remove unnecessary branded stuff (I don't know how to do that, any app for that?)
5-) Then just mess with the phone.
So my last questions is : When I install RUU, it will get back to stock recovery, and when i install the unrooted backup it will be like a legal phone right ? (Of course i will turn S-OFF back)
Sorry for asking noob questions, It's my first time using android phone and it's been only few days since i bought it
You got it all right, except if you have never updated the phone, as there was an update which blocked gingerbreak you don't need to do most of it.
Also when you flash the RUU it will all go stock. S-off will remain as it can't be turned on. Not to my knowledge anyway.
I think I wont use gingerbreak method, I checked for updates when I bought it and it said no updates. So probably that fix is already included in the WF S :/
I didn't managed to find RUU for WF S somehow but i guess for now I don't need it.
Today the guy at service shop (for breaking S-OFF) said that there is way for user to set S-OFF back, but he said he doesn't know the exact way. I thought hard reset will fix it
Thanks a lot for your help !
No problem, also you could just run gingerbreak first just to see if it does work without following the other steps.
