You shold install amon ra recovery.
It has much more options than clockwork.
It can even fix sd card errors.
You can find img file using search.
Then install it using unrevoked custom recovery option.
Then go for installing a new rom
Or you can partician sd card easily with amon ra

Seems that you may have a PVT4 device. I agree with the above poster, look for a newer version of ClockworkMod that will work with AmonRa 2.0.1 or flash the AmonRa 2.0.1 image with unrEVOked recovery and try again.

I have just the same problem as you have!
Only that I didn't try to wipe, I tried to preform a backup (nandroid backup if I'm not wrong).
Does any one know how to fix that problem without flashing a new recovery image?
And if not, should I falsh Amon RA's recovery using the unlocker's method about flashing custom recoveries?
Not sure how to fix it but yeah, try Amon-Ra's recovery instead as a lot less seems to go wrong with it. I have used it in the past and it had not caused me any issues, although, i tend to stick with ClockworkMod just because fortunately enough for me, it has not caused any problems and i prefer the frequent updates.

Check your hboot screen if your pvt1 - 3 try reflashing stock ruu, it could just be a badly flashed misc partition, i had a simlar problem once

just tried that.
it says:
E:Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)
never seen anything like this. my previous phone was nexus s, so pretty familiar with CWM recovery and whatnot.
also moving through the CWM recovery menu
these come up in this order...
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
thank you so much

Try to fix permissions in your phone, also try to put a external SD card to see if that helps. I had that problem with my vibrant before and I did all that, and works after I did that.
One question; which ROM are you using?

tried the fix permissions + sd card mounting, but no go. found something interesting on Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 thread. very similar to my issue, something to do with the pit file?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307524&page=2
sounds like if i can get my hands on the original pit file, i should be able to recover from this awful situation.
i'm on the bloat free rom from teshxx now, but was on EaglesBlood before.
thanks for all your help!
I'm having the same problem on my gs2...im trying to find the .pit file somewhere for our 16gb's ones...If anyone knows if the file let me know
thankss
I installed CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6, but once i boot into the recovery mode, I get the following lines after the options:
CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.6
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
And I can't make a backup and get a message "Can't mount /system" followed by the same lines above.
What can solve my problem ?

I found this one in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650
"signed_cwm-5.0.2.7-flashablezip-ext4+rfs.zip (Flash from Recovery)"
It should work perfectly ?
And should I use "apply update from sdcard" or "install zip from sdcard" ?
Done, works perfectly ^^
I need help fixing my gio, if I go in recovery mode and try to flash anything, it says:

E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
