I was wondering if anyone knew when the EVO will be getting the new HTC Sense. I know that the EVO can get the new Sense via Root, but I'm not interested in rooting. I'm looking forward to the new Sense for the fast boot and themes... lol. I'm guessing that it will be included with the Gingerbread update, but does anyone have any idea when this will be coming. I know carriers are notoriously slow to bring OS updates, and I'm not sure why, but I appreciate any information. Google and tech websites have proved useless.
Thanks.

There are actually quite a few threads around the General section here discussing and debating that very topic. The consensus is that it unknown when or if we will get the new Sense at all. Some people believe that the Evo is done getting official updates, others think we will get a Gingerbread update, but that it won't include the new sense. Others believe we will get a full Gingerbread + Sense 2.0 update. So basically, it's anyone's guess as of now. If we were indeed to actually get an official update, I myself would guess that it'll be sometime between april and july. Hopefully something gets leaked before then. As you said though, you could always Root up, and flash a sense 2.0 rom such as Myn's Warm Z ( a port from the Desire Z), MikZ, or any of Virus's Z ports. Lots of options if you're rooted.
The evo may or not get it, no one actually knows. Your best options would be to flash a ported rom, such a myn's warm z, virus z, as they're ports with the sense 2.0.

Hi all, are there any Android donut ROMs for the HTC hero? I know there are some for some other android phone but are there any ports for the hero ?
If there were, you think it wouldn't show up? Have some patience, the device hasn't even been out for a month yet.

lol! well i too am just wondering why there has not been a rom for the phone yet!
Yeah i hear the "its only been out for a month" but seriuosly??? the magic had roms before that but just by looking at the hero forums there doesnt seem anyone to be working on cooking roms..
exactly my point minogue, i know it might be tough to make the ROMs but its not like it can't be done
Well the phone has been rooted already.
However many people rooted their magic and g1 to install the htc Hero rom. And I guess since we have an HTC Hero, developers are not interested in making roms or optiming the current HTC Hero Rom.
yea well I still dont understand why they wouldnt want to optimize the hero its supposed to be the best android phone yet wouldn't they want to play around with it and see what they can make out of it?
Well hopefully HTC will release an update soon. It's said to be released within next months.
yea at least the update is out soon so I guess well all just have to wait
as i have said before
i too find it very strange that no chef is on board with us hero users
as we all know the chefs like to come/be first.....and we have nobody
unless the HTC update is all we need
Yeah, i was kinda hoping Cyanogen would get himself a Hero and start optimizing the ROM to improves speed, along with maybe some extra Donut features.
But i think the problem with the Hero's Sense UI is that it's not open source and so you're not allowed to tweak or mess with it. Only the underlying Android is open source and so may be meddled with and distributed.
Cobblers! Windows mobile is not open source and that's been getting cooked for years!
The main reason i reckon is because we already have what everyone wants....that's why the roms are all adding Hero stuff to the Magic.
They'll be here soon enough, in the meantime, be happy with the fact that you have what everyone else wants...!
I believe that Paul from Modaco is going to be cooking soon.
He's already posted stock unbranded and branded ROM's and mentioned cooking up a ROM with new Sense UI stuff soon.
I hope it's True. Paul's bits on using recovery image has already got me rooting and doing nandroid backups etc (I supplied the stock t_mobile rom to him as a result)
I guess that most people (like myself) just have no need for an other rom. I can already do everything I want and I have only minor speed problems from time to time. So I think motivation is very low right now on the rom front. This of course will change with a new Android version or updates Sense UI. Until then I'll code apps instead of messing around with the rom.

Yep, nothing much out there yet.
If we do get people working on speed improvements/optimisations then that will be great. Back on my touch HD some of the roms were very slick.
Sense UI upgrades are main thing, along with new versions of Android itself. We'll probaly get them faster as rom's here than official upgrades

You wouldnt want to customize something that is allready very good? If I could I would optimize it so its even greater than It Is. But that's just me I guess other people dobt wabt to make something that Is great greater
I believe the reason there is no cooking going on is the fact that there is nothing to upgrade yet. The Hero ROMs that are available right now are the latest thing, there is nothing newer so there is nothing to upgrade or borrow from better ROMs. Once there are newer phones and/or ROMs the cooking should start itself

Why can't we have Froyo yet already???? What's the hold up? By the time, we get it... 3.0 will be around the corner...
Yours doesn't have it?
Yep. I have it
Sent from my Evo on on the Now network from Sprint
oh and duck Apple
I'm not talking about hacked custom roms.. I'm talking about offical release from HTC. I want Froyo that is fully function including 4g
you are lucky you didnt own a Hero then. It was outdated they day i got it(two days before launch). it came with 1.5 i believe, 1.6 was already out and 2.0 was announced a few weeks later w/ the DROID. THEN 2.1 one came out and Hero owners were STILL waiting. finally 2.2 was announced and a week or so later they pushed 2.1 to Sprint Heros.
long story short, dont expect it to come out anytime soon with HTC's track record. i would recommend rooting and installing cm6, it runs great sans 4G

"without 4G"
HTC has announced 2.2 will roll out by December. If you want it that bad, i suggest trying out CyanogenMod. I never had 4G coverage around me, but after playing around with it, i would never go back to a Sense-based 2.1 ROM.

Cyanogen's mod, while amazingly awesome, has problems. There are missing features, inconsistencies between what works and what doesnt from user to user, and it's AOSP.
HTC has to make EVERYTHING work for EVERYONE all the while porting over their sense UI. All of their apps and widgets need to work on Froyo. It needs to be stable. This sort of thing realistically can take months to perfect. So don't be butthurt when you don't get it til Christmas.
I personally can't stand Sense... or any other UI put on top of android. But as long as I can root and boot up custom roms, I'm a happy camper.
uhh isn't google suppose to be the one releasing froyo since they are the makers of android os not htc? i thought htc was just the hardware
google only releases it for nexus one
they then release froyo source then hardware makers like htc and motorola use the source along to build their versions with either sense or blur
Now I can see how so many people are confused.
This isn't a simple phone, it is complex and there are many hands in the cookie jar. Please do some research about your phone, and who makes what, and you will realize it is far more complicated than "Froyo is out, how come my phone doesn't have it."
I'm very happy with the Froyo I already have. I see 4G as a totally useless feature due to its extreme battery drainage.

Then thinking you can come into a development forum and post a question that should be common knowledge to anyone tinkering at all in Android is just lazy.
If you switch phones every two months, then what do you care about Froyo, or even learning what your phone can do anyway...
When I make a purchase, I find out what I am buying, if it suits my needs, what limitations it has, what support it has etc. I call that making an "informed" decision.
I don't just walk into the story and buy the pretty one without knowing the above. Or else I would have an iPhone and wouldn't care about what I can do with it.
This was a lazy question posted by someone that hasn't done any reading about their phone or they would see what has to be done to get an Official Froyo build.
basically,
Froyo (aka: Android 2.2) has been released by it's maker. it's maker is Google. HTC gets licensing to install the OS on it's phones. now, when HTC first started working with Android...android was..well...it was lacking...it was lacking a fair bit. so the HTC devs put some 'Sense' onto android to make it something that the nerds can bring to their corporate executives. (cause if we nerds can't sell the boss on how cool this is...then i don't get to play it.) meanwhile, Google is trying to turn Android into a serious market contender. and its going up against some very mature code. this has a side effect of causing Google to release v1.5, v1.6, v2.1 and v2.2 rather close to each other. this is not a sustainable pace of release...it will piss everyone off. thankfully Froyo supposedly will be able to bridge us over until v3.0. at which point google has said they will proceed with a much slower version relase of Android.
Sense is not needed like it used to be. however, it'll prolly be around for a while. htc has said they will release froyo onto the evo but that is not a priority for them...the evo is yesterdays product so its more important getting the upcoming devices ready for market. perhaps the HTC/Sprint sanctioned Android 2.2 will be released by the end of the 4th quarter (or so they say).
on the good note...CM6 is rather nice. even without having 4G running yet. but really, how often do need to turn on the 4G radio? and they will get it working before long.
i must also agree w/ Bielinsk on this one....

Check out Avalaunchmods Froyo ROM with Sense. He released an RC for it today and hopes to have a couple of little issues fixed tonight. He has a Sense and no-Sense ROM available. He's put a lot of work into them and i'll be checking out the Sense ROM for sure tonight. Probably bounce back and forth between the CM6 that i'm using now and Ava's Sense ROM.

maybe because all the phones i buy are android os...and you really have way too much time on you're hand to flame someone over such a little thing...all i asked was "isn't froyo suppose to be released by google and not htc" if you don't wana answer it then leave it alone...noone wants to hear your history crap...Noone wants to know how you read every nutrient fact before buying milk or read every little thing that's on the charging adapter...maybe you have time all the time in the world to do that and all the power to you but not everyone is like...we actually have a life and don't learn the history of every little thing we purchase...and fyi forums are made to ask questions and to inform each other...so if you don't like someones question instead of flaming simply don't read it and move on.
So the Nexus One could get 2.3 OTA any day now. And the Desire is basically an N1 with slightly different hardware bells&whistles plus Sense. And an official HTC update with Sense could take ages, but GingerNinja is already floating around....
If the N1 starts getting 2.3 officially on day-X, what's the likely time until a working, everyday ROM for the Desire shows up here? Without Sense, of course. Forget that Christmas would mean a delay. Just wondering when to start getting hopes up.
Apologies if this exact question has been asked and answered. All my search turned up was vague "It could be months for official 2.3 with Sense but unofficial vanilla 2.3 ROMs much sooner." Thanks in advance to all the people who do the actual work making it happen!
If it is out for the Nexus One, It should be ported for our Device within a day or two

That was nice. No but seriously, I was in a **** mood and seriously, people should read more. Personally, I go through the forums and search to find stuff and I read an awful lot of posts (quite sad to be honest). It just gets on my nerves sometimes.
Been on Oxygen for a few weeks and frankly exchanging Sense for 300MB of onboard (not SD) app space is worth the loss of Sense. Using dialer1 and handcent and a bundle of other neat apps is great. Also have double the battery life that I had either 2.2 Stock Sense
oursoul, why do you insist on posting that very same line/paragraph/sales pitch on every single new thread that is popping up regarding the *ahem* "latest" news of Gingerbread OTA.
Bumping up your post count?
Did you find a replacement to take the "Notes" info from gmail contacts and link them all together which sense does? Thats the only reason in holding on TBH
It`s been official now, I`am reading on some site.
I prefer the Sense Dialer so dont like any of the current stock ROMs, so will wait patiently for the OTA.
Any better similar ones, that has contacts pics and facebook integration?
did anyone hear the leaked android 2.3.2 Galaxy S release?
I'll be disappointed if the Galaxy S gets a gingerbread update before the Desire... HTC will be slipping if that happens!
You know the drill mate.. the update will roll out.. it will be filled with bugs.. rants all over the place about how Sammy manages to make ****ty firmwares and then out of nowhere HTC will pop the update for us making the Desire again the first non developer device that gets the newest Android itteration
Or something along those lines.. I hope..

what will be funny is that by time June/July has come and we our 2.3 update, there is no doubt 2.5 (2.6) will have been announced and we'll all want that version instead.
Hopefully we'll atleast get the updated Sense with the update.
if Samsung roll out 2.3.2 then I hope HTC roll out 2.3.3 at least
also I would like them to fix the htc mail client too so it works with hotmail eas...
It's going to be annoying in 2.3 that you can't link Google contacts with Facebook ones, that was one of the things I missed when using Gingerbread ROMS. Looking forward to going back to an official ROM though whenever it's released.
I've been using the DevNull Rom, which is supposed to be a stock Android Rom, since yesterday.
HTC Sense is definitely more user friendly and intuitive....... has a lot more features too.
However, I find it to be quite unstable and kills the battery pretty quickly, and let's not forget the stupid apps like stock and peep.
Coming from HTC Sense, stock Android takes a while to get used to but I'm glad I made the switch 'cause my phone is a lot more stable now and the battery life has improved considerably.

a)partition tables are not related to this thread
b)what you are pointing out is just plain ridiculous. There is definitely no point in getting 300mb of internal space when a decent SD card outperforms nand. You can't fit use other roms either which are meant to be used with large caches, and you could brick your device.
Oh, and c) you don't get any of the aosp bugs either

@Erklat: what aosp bugs are you talking about? I'm thinking about flashing oxygen because it is said to be bugfree.
I am almost certain that HTC's Desire gingerbread Rom will use the old sense version. Nandspace is simply too small. HD -ROMs only work because of high use of A2SD and HTC can't use that on official ROMs.

Hey!
Today, I was doing some surfing, and came across the Sense SDK/HTCdev page on the web. It's already been covered on the forums, however I think that there may be a slight hint there as to what the new Gingerbread ROM on the Desire will include:
http://www.htcdev.com/about/
If you look at the Desire in the greyish box down the page, you will clearly see the Sense UI running in the image is the new version that is found on the Gingerbread Sense devices.
This could be one of two things:
1. A little hint as to the features of the Gingerbread ROM
2. A mistake in the Photoshop department
I'm hoping it's number one, but IMHO I think it will turn out to be number two, what with the leaked HTC Asia ROM having the FroYo Sense UI... but anyhow, let's wait and see!
What do you think?
Thanks!
-Cameron
This seems like a photoshop mistake. They just fit in a screenshot of the Sense UI they got laying around and fit it in a press shot of the HTC Desire.
But.. (there's always a but)
It somehow would make sense that they upgraded the Sense version of the Desire to 2.1 (or something similar). In the leaked Asia builds, you could find some features that were only found on Sense 2.1 + every single phone in the Desire "family" is running 2.1.
Also, remember HTC saying that there wasn't enough internal space on the Desire for Gingerbread + Sense? Yeah well, those leaked Asia updates, they had Sense + GB, didn't they? And as far as I know, that ROM was about the same size as a FroYo stock ROM.
My guess is that they were slowly porting Sense 2.1 to the Desire, feature by feature and at some point, someone said "this is going to slow, we're having more issues than planned, this is going to cost us more money and time than we planned", so naturally, HTC pulled the plug, until the community went nuts and screamed rape and fire. Sooo, they're now settling for a dirty solution: ditch some apps from the system partition, which can be found on the market.
What I can't seem to think of is why they wouldn't stick with the regular Sense that we have right now, mixed with GB. It would've been easier and less time consuming.
This is just a sequence of thoughts that I have concerning this update, don't go believing me or telling me that I'm wrong, I'm just thinking out loud, sharing my perspective
Thanks for that. I'm hoping that you're wrong though, because I'd like to get Sense 2.1 without ports but that's me, greedy as always
HTC doesn't do "porting" as many of the dev's here on XDA do, they got the source code so they only need to compile a Sense 2.1 version for the HTC Desire Which was what I meant with porting.
I'm hoping for a Sense 2.1 update as well, since I like Sense 2.1 far more than Sense 3 (based on what I've seen, tried and read) but I'm not getting my hopes up.. Time will tell ^^
No, by ports I meant that the new Desire update wouldn't be ported, so there would be no incompatibilities. Hope thats what you meant just

@flavio.moringa - it's clear that we will not see sense 3.0 because it's reserved for Sensation / more expensive HTC models or newer models as it provides a logical marketing policy
but 2.1 would be a very positive surprise...
