Verizon XV6900 Flashed ROM GPS takes long time to lock - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I have the HTC Touch (Verizon XV6900). I know it's an old one but I never had a need for GPS til now. I followed the instructions here http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html as they were the simplest I could find to install a custom ROM and unlock the GPS. However, I find that the GPS takes a really long time to lock, several minutes at least. Trolling through several forums I see links to this url http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=VerizonAGPSFix which supposedly contains information to make your GPS lock faster but that page doesn't exist and not even google could resurrect it.
Can someone point me to a new page or post a set of instructions which I could follow to try and speed up my GPS locks?
I don't know if this matters or not but after I flashed the custom ROM and booted the device, as the OS was coming up the customizations DID run. It ran and was pretty much complete before I knew what was happening. I mention that because some threads say don't let the customizations run.
I'm using GPSViewer (included w/the ROM) to get the lock and I don't have a data connection to use to lookup satellite locations on the net.

Now can't get a GPS lock period
Am I way off-base here or is this in the wrong forum? I was looking around yesterday and found a forum for the HTC Vogue under legacy devices (hadn't seen it before) so I can move it there if needed.
On another note, I did some more research and it seems that AGPS requires a data connection. Hope someone can confirm or deny that.
But AGPS aside, I've probably gotten a GPS lock only 3 times since I've flashed it on Friday and for the past day and a half when I try to get a lock I see no activity.
At this url dawkins.50webs.com/phone_screens you can see screenshots from the GPSViewer app on the phone. It will stay like this until I finally give up and quit after a few hours; doesn't matter if I'm indoors or out.
Just looking for some suggestions here. Should I reflash the ROM? a different ROM? radio? to a new radio? and what about customizations?

How did you get them to lock. I am on the same boat as you. Didn't need the gps till now. can you tell me the exact steps you used that is getting you to lock the gps? and are you outside when you get a lock. or you get locks everywhere? and what is your agps ip? I pick up satellites but no lock. I also have data plan so this sucks.
I flashed back to sprint rom with no gps then verizon rom then custom rom the gps is unlocked but can't get them to lock.
and then http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/htc-titan/36377-alltel-gps-gps-super-fast-lockon.html
my radio is 3.42.50
called htc today all the settings seems fine
Called verizon they told me they can not give the agps setting because this phone is made to only work with vznavigator.

GPS slower with new ROM

hey guys, I installed the alltel ROM when the big news about GPS came out. Then I did the registry change to '4'. The GPS locked on really fast, I was really pleased. But then about 2 weeks ago maybe 3, I changed ROMs to the Bell ROM from PPCgeeks. I did the registry change again, and with this ROM the GPS takes about 10-15 minutes to get a fix. Every once in a while I get a lock in around 5-7 minutes but not very often. Does anyone know why this is?
i am using the bell rom as well and have real problems getting a gps connection. I didnt stop and try the alltel rom (went straight to the bell one) so i can't compare but its takes longer than it should.
Here are some of the things I have tried. Installed GPStoday to monitor and ensure i don't have a 'cold' start when trying to lock on. Installed quickGPS (with patch, finally got i9t installed correctly) and update constantly to get the most up to date satellites. And then of course I did the registry change to '4'. Every once in a while I get a lock around a minute or so, but maybe 1 out of every 30-40 tries. Usually takes between 7-10 minutes.
One ROM that I am yet to try is the leaked Sprint ROM. Does anyone on the Bell network have experience with this ROM or any feedback?
could you clarify the registry edit to '4' ? i haven't come across that
Nvm i found it!
I know I read the registry fix somewhere on this forum. but I can't find it right now but I did stumble across one for the titan.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-385324.html
there was written for the vogue but I am not sure if it was on this forum or on ppcgeeks.
It is because now you are using the Bell PRI, which does not have the GPS flags set. There is a thread at ppcgeeks, called sprint gps problems ...., something like that. Its a sticky in the upgrade forum.
Pretty much what you have to do is update to the Sprint PRI, then install the PRI for Bell if required. This sets all the flags for Sprint (read GPS), then sets them back to Bell, but the GPS options stay, because the Bell PRI doesnt unset them. Check the thread first. Im on Telus, and my lock times went from 15 minutes to 30 seconds
thanx alot ghettofreeryder!! I installed the new sprint PRL and now I get locks in a few seconds. I have reset several times just to insure that it was not just a lucky lock, but after a few resets still locking on quickly!! thanx again
sorry to be a bother but i want to get this right before i do it. Is this just a matter of running ppst.exe (i found a cab that is supposed to put it into you're windows folder at ppcgeeks) or do i need to reflash to the leaked rom to run it?
Thanks!
where can I download PRI, I accidentally upgraded the PRL. for the first day or sp it seemed to work incredibly fast, but now it still takes a lung time. maybe because it is raining here? but I would like to try the PRI upgrade.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=26410&highlight=still+having+gps+problems+try+this+sprint&page=29 post 290 (right at the bottom) is the one i used. I havent seen any adverse effects yet but i havent really tried the gps to see if it works any better either.
I installed those two files but now it says I am roaming. how can I change this?

Telus Vogue Update finally here!

So Aaron McCarthy discovered a new Vogue rom for Telus users (I REPEAT: TELUS ONLY!!!). It was at one of the known IP addresses which HTC has used. It was accidentally leaked or opened for a tester, I suppose. It's also seemingly no longer available... I get "Directory Listing Denied" when I follow the link now. So, of course I've uploaded my copy to rapidshare. Back up any important files on your phone and then enjoy:
http://rapidshare.com/files/1282900...4350H_3.41.00_Ship_withPPSTPatch1.20.exe.html
It'll be easy to install, just run the EXE on your windows XP/Vista computer, connect your vogue with Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center when the program prompts you to do so, and follow the on-screen instructions. It took me approximately 15 minutes to do this. Add five for letting the phone customize itself.
I also did some messing with it to get everything working. It does not fully function out of box (which is probably why it's not actually released yet).
For me, the steps that got the GPS and Internet to work:
-Dial *22803 , 1 (for English), 1 (program your handset). Wait for reset.
-Install Google Maps and a registry editor.
-Search for a registry key called GPSMODE and change it's dword value from 2 to 4. This may not be necessary, but it worked for me.
<EDIT>Registry change is definitely not necessary, I've tried it both ways with no different effect. What this setting does might be explained better in the next post.</EDIT>
-Soft reset.
-Run Google Maps and any other freeware, no problem.
I'm certain that some GPS programs will require initialization/tweaks, and I'd bet that most of those have already been examined elsewhere in this forum. Anyway the GPS is seemingly solid and accurate. I placed it next to a handheld garmin unit and speed, lattitude, longitude were matched on both devices over a half-hour trip. It will certainly NOT work indoors.
As for Rev.A, I honestly cannot tell you anything about it. I'm in a CDMA only area for the next 3 weeks.
Thanks again to Aaron McCarthy for discovering the Rom and letting us know so that I could copy it before we got locked out. Here's the thread he started : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2385096
by setting GPSMode to 4 you disable the GPS. Not the best idea....
GPSMode 1 = ONLY pure GPS
GPSMode 2 = GPS + aGPS
GPSMode 4 = aGPS only
Got it installed without any issues. However Google maps and the Telus Navigator programs don't seem to be able to find the GPS... Well, to be more precise, googlemaps doesn't give an error. It just sits there seeking satellites. The Telus NAV doesn't get past the startup screen. Any suggestions?
WM6.1 is working fine on my phone but is it possible that I actually don't have the built in GPS even though it is a Telus HTC Touch?

It has been known since a while that all Vogues phones (or CDMA Touch) have the GPS hardware built in. It is just not activated by Telus yet.
This new ROM should be released officially by Telus soon in order to let users have GPS and better performance.

Has anyone else tested to see if Rev A gives better performance?
Also, does this ROM improve Bluetooth and device overall performance?

Thanks for this ROM. Can't be more easy to upgrade a ROM.
GPS is working fine. It took several try and a very clear sky (no tree) to make first connexion. It was so slow to connect that I suspect AGPS (cellular tower triangulation assist) is not working.
At 3 bars of reception, in EVDO REV A zone, I get a DL speed of 150 to 400kb/s which is pretty lame and just a bit better than before rev A.
One problem:
When clicking on status icons on the top bar (volume, battery, etc.), it used to display the control directly. Now it displays an intermediate screen repeating those icons but in a larger mode. It is buggy because it doesn't display message icons if I previously clicked Dismiss. Then I can't go to my messages.
In Start, Settings, System, TouchFLO, there is no setting to remove this screen.
I tried HKLM->Software->HTC->EnlargeTitleBar->Enable=0 without success.
Is it something that comes with WM6.1?
Is it Telus ROM specific?
Do Sprint official ROM got the same problem?
Any reg to remove this?
That is too funny

If you go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 and go to post #14 you can see the guide to improving GPS locks on the telus rom. I mean DRASTICALLY. From initally loading the rom I went from getting 4-5 locks maybe after a few minutes on a cold GPS start then once I changed all the settings and did a soft reset I was getting 6 to 7 satellite locks down in my basement. Pretty impressive
It's not as complicated as it seems to be in the post I made. Pretty straight forward actually and I would recommend it to anyone who wants better GPS reception
In regards to Rev A speeds. I'm in London ontario so would think there would be rev A in the area but I dont get any better download speeds. I still download around 600-800 kbps. Which is really good enough for me. I dont know if rev A actually was supposed to increase your download speed or if it improved upload speeds making Voip easier and allowing you to have data and phone stuff going on at the same time. All I know is my internet speed didnt change but Rev A was enabled.

Every time, before using this, an already established data connexion is needed BEFORE looking for GPS satellite. The GPS will not establish the connection if it's not there. A simple solution is to open Google map and move the map up to a download is required BEFORE making the GPS satellite connexion.

Looks like the official Telus rom is on HTC's site now.
Yep - and it appears to be identical to the one referenced in this thread from 3 weeks ago. That's kind of a disappointment considering how much trouble the tech-naive user is going to have getting the gps to work and getting their data connection back after flashing.

2 weeks ago I sent a support ticket to HTC stating that the GPS fix is difficult to get, mainly because all GPS assisted features (aGPS) are disabled by default in the radio (can't be fixed by a simple registry tweak). I even pointed them to one solution of many (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 post #14). Then no correction and not even a mention in the documentation.
I just can't imagine how many phone calls they will get from upgraders complaining that the GPS can't find satellites after 5 minutes...

No GPS Verizon XV6900 (Vogue)

Oh kay... I really hope I don't get yelled at for not searching or something but I can't find anything and I seriously need help. I have the 3.42.50(I think) radio and OMJ's Custom Verizon Rom and I just can't get a lock. I've tried thousands of tutorials and haven't had any luck. On my current flash I've used this tutorial, and haven't gotten a lock. I don't know what I'm doing wrong... I'm pretty desperate. ANY help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
First, to make sure you have the updated radio (which you probably do) go to start/settings/system/Device Information and check there to make sure.
I wish I had had such a detailed set of instructions to follow when I was setting up my US Cellular Vogue. I had to patch together instructions from 3 different sources to make it work. Of course it works, yours doesn't. Are you outside when you are trying to get at least your initial lock. When I first lock on I generally have to be outside, after it is once locked on I can go inside and it will retain a lock.
Check for my Tips thread, basic info on setting it up is there.

and... can u send me a link to those tips TheChampJT? im bad at navigating forums... :-\
Have you ever run the MR1 on your phone? This would block third party apps from accessing your gps. If this is the case, you need to down grade to a none gps rom, the upgrade.

If it came with verizon WM 6.1 or you flashed verizon WM 6.1 and let costumizations run, then you found your problem. Maybe if you tell use what you have done with it since you got it, it might be easier to diagnos.

ftp://ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Verizon/RUU_Vogue_VZW_WWE_3.14.605.1_Radio_3.37.77_Ship.exe
You run it and allow it to customize and wahla...updated WM6.1 and the GPS works!
Gps has to be configured to use Com 4.
Use HTC Titan Quick GPS to updated satellite empiricals (GPS position data). I get cold fixes in 15 seconds indoors! Download it from: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4914&d=1201747040
You will have to do a "Over the Air" reprogram via *228, I think its option 2.
I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WITH THE NEW ROM AND EASY AS PIE TO INSTALL!
Darn GPS is pretty dam close. I get 29foot accuracy 98.5% of the time!
ozzzzzzz,
did you change the location setting under phone settings? I forgot to check this and finally figured to look there.
Go to settings / personal / phone-----then hit services and select settings for location. Make sure that 911 is not selected. May be simple issue with that.

KCDale99 Posted this, couple weeks ago, it still works people.!!!!!!!!........
I justreceived a new XV6900 in the mail today when mine suffered a hardwarefailure of some sort. The new phone came with the newest ROM whichincludes the 3.37.78 radio. Of course I turn on the phone, and updatesrun. This disabled the GPS even after loading a custom ROM. the aGPSfix would not work, and gps Viewer couldn't even find one satellite.
Ifigured this was just like an old, 'let the customizations run'problem. So I followed the steps found here with one exception:
<!-- m -->http://wiki.ppchaven.com/index.php?titl ... ERIZON_GPS<!-- m -->
Onstep 4, I ran the RUU_Vogue_VZW_WWE_3.14.605.1_Radio_3.37.78_ShipOfficial ROM from Verizon. I did NOT let customizations run. I thenloaded my custom ROM. This puts me on the official Verizon radio.
After that, the aGPS fix worked like a charm and GPS is working.
Iknow this is a rehash of other issuew, but I wanted to let everyoneknow that the newest phones shipping are disabling GPS all together.
THIS STILL WORKS PEOPLE!!!!!!! been at this for a week now with absolutely no luck until now this guy has it.................. 5-31-09
I used NFSFAN's custom ROM WM6.5v8 for my custom rom.
the only other thing i had to do is when i was done installing ROM's my phone would not authenticate on Verizon network, so instead of calling them i use the online MY Verison to activate my phone to a old Verizon i760 then re-activated my xv6900 online ordered (verizon) a week ago !!! I have tried every fix, etc... until this combo... except i never went to the leaked verizon radio been to the bell, us cellular, alltel, verzon, etc... and back again..... now it works...... with the fix this guy posted......QPST ip info fom the fix page, links all seem to work!
Again********THIS STILL WORKS PEOPLE
XV6900 CAME STOCK ABOUT A WEEK AGO!!!
YOur first link is to reply to another thread, your second link takes me to the wiki main page, so no information on both whatsoever....

I did whole unlock 0.40 to Sprint ROM to unlock 2.31 to VZW ROM, then straight to WM6.5V12, then I did the aGPS hack with QPST, and even tried cody's fix in his FAQ thread. I spent all yesterday morning trying to get GPS working, and I've got nothing to show for it. I'm so f'n pissed right now!

Nope. The only time I let customizations run was when I installed WM6.5.
I did the Coke .40, Sprint (no-run), Coke 2.31, Verizon (no-run), NSFANS WM6.5 (run) and then his two verizon cabs and finished with the aGPS hack with QPST. I used the Telus fix, but should I have used a different one?
I was able to get GPS (with locks after a few minutes outside). I don't think I am getting aGPS, though.
Doesn't aGPS help when you are moving or inside? I think that you would get faster locks (especially the first time) if aGPS is working.
BTW, that routine killed my voice line and SMS with a #8899 notification. Verizon networking is still working.
Todd you'll have to call Verizon and have them re-authorize your phone. The same thing happened to me when I tried that fix.

I will. That office is closed until Sunday. While I am waiting I am trying other methods and options.
I am currently on a Coke .40, Verizon ROM 3.14.605.1 Radio 3.37.77 (no-cust), Coke 2.31, Verizon ROM 3.14.605.1 Radio 3.37.77 (w/cust) followed by QuickGPS. This lets me see satellites and gets me fully back on a Verizon radio. (I will still have to call #8899 when their office opens)
Can anyone match up ROM versions with the MR1, MR2 designations? Is 3.37.78 MR1?

You can have GPS working if you simply install the stock 6.1 ROM available on htc.com here
I have to say tough that NFSFAN's WM6.5 ROM is great and transforms your phone into a much better device, so if you are up to it, unlock your phone and flash NFSFAN or any 6.5 custom ROM .
Do as socrate said for GPS. That should work. Back when I unlocked my GPS on my Verizon Vogue, it took a lot of crap to get it working, so hopefully just flashing the stock 6.1 ROM from HTC will work.
And, to answer your question from the other thread, as long as you've ran Coke's unlocker, you should be good to go. To check to make sure it worked, go into bootloader mode by pressing power+camera+reset button all at once. If it says 2.31 Coke, you're good.
You'll be good to go now to install NFSFAN's 6.5 ROM. Just download it, put your phone into bootloader mode, connect it to the USB, it should change from Serial to USB. Run the RomUpdateUtility that's included with NFSFAN's .zip. Go through the steps, and once it's done, it'll reset and boot (slowly) into 6.5.
Should the HTC flash activate the GPS on its own, or will I have to do that complicated "GPS Fix" that people used to have ot do for the Telus Touch using the ESN number, etc..
I'm not sure. Flash the HTC ROM and find out. It's not big deal. Just flash it, download Google Maps, and see if you get a lock outside. Make sure, though, that you turn on location in the phone settings.
My GPS on Telus with 6.5 is veeerrryyyy slow to connect to satellites. Takes up to 5-10 minutes. Used to lock on in seconds with 6.1 Nothing I do (and I've tried ALL the fixes) seems to work. Could be my device is broken too, but I'm not the only one experiencing this...

I was finding this as well on my Bell touch, but I was indoors while checking. Once I took it outside walking, it picked it up quickly. Worth a check.

Same way with mine, too. I just stood near a wall of windows in my house and it locked on pretty quickly. If I'm anywhere else in a house/building that's not near windows, it takes some time to get a lock.

Hi there. A couple friends of mine have the Touch on Telus as well (mine is on Bell). I upgraded their's to the Telus GPS firmware update and could never get the GPS working. I contacted Telus and eventually figured out that they had to have the “Telus Navigator” service on their account and then the GPS only worked from within some special Telus apps that came loaded in the firmware update.
I unlocked one of their Vogues with the CoKe SPL and then flashed the official Bell update. The GPS worked perfectly.
Long story short: I think the Bell ROM is the best way to get your Vogue GPS enabled. Use it first and then flash a custom ROM like NFSFAN's or some other.
The Fish
Well I'm using nfsfan's latest and I can tell you I've tried everything and it takes a looong time to lock satellites. They show up pretty quick, but the lock takes forever and it didn't used to. I noticed that I have radio version 3.41.0, I downloaded 3.42.40 but I can't seem to find a definitive guide to flashing just the radio. Anyone know how?

Serious GPS Problems I NEED HELP (UPDATE 4-12-10)FIXED

Hey guys. I know there are dozens of threads here on XDA about GPS problems. Well, I have sifted through many for weeks now, I have tried and tried tweaks, hacks, whatever and I am having no luck. I used to have my GPS working with bing, google maps, whatever. I installed TomTom and never got it to locate a GPS signal, since then I have not been able to get any GPS working that I can recall.
I am not sure if I have replaced or deleted some file during all these registry hacks and tweaks, so I am at a loss. I just want to get my GPS working. I am no noob, so please no rude remarks. I just need some help. I cannot get this thing licked for the life of me. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I am using an Energy Leo ROM with Sense 2.5 if that helps or matters to anyone.
Please, people, somebody help me get this GPS working again. THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE.
EDIT: I fixed it, if ur curious check out post #7

Since you're "no noob" I assume you've already hard-reset your phone...?? And/or tried the Task 29? And then re-flashed to a stock rom?
If you've done all of those things (surely you have if you've been troubleshooting for weeks) and GPS still doesn't work then it seems like you must have a hardware problem.
Yeah, thanks

Alright, figured I would get some type of remark anyways, but it's cool. I have done a hard reset which I was trying to avoid, but I have not reflashed to a stock ROM and back again. Once again, I was trying to avoid all of that, but if there isn't any other options, it seems like that's what I am going to have to do. It's just since I flashed to the energy ROM, my GPS did work, it just stopped working suddenly. Thought there could be some connection(s) settings that got changed or possibly a file lost or changed.
I am willing to reflash the phone, by all means, but I thought I would check with my fellow hacking badasses to see if anyone could come up with an actual idea instead of telling me to change the phone BACK to it's original out of the box state, but if not whatever, guess I might have to bite the bullet.
If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. I'm gonna hold tight on reflashing the phone for a few days to see if anyone has any other ideas.
what version of TomTom are you using?
i found with TT7 it will not show how many sats you have. and its a bit of a faf getting it to work, but i do have it working like this
in the gps settings of the phone set theprograme port to com 4and the hardware port to com5 and the baud to 4800
in TT and go to gps settings under preferences
change the GPS device to other GPS set the com to com 5 or 4 (try both)
go outside in a field etc, and wait 10 mins, you will see the latitude etc change, wal around and it will keep changing, but there will be no blue bars to tell you your signal strenght etc

It's easier to help you if you say what you've tried -- a little more detail than you're giving. Like, after you hard-reset did you reflash the Enrgy rom and try the GPS before adding Tom-Tom? If you did a hard reset, returning the phone to the basic Energy rom (without Tom-Tom) and GPS still doesn't work then Tom-Tom isn't the problem. But who knows... good luck.

In my version of TomTom (ttn7.916.9189_qvga_blue) I find my satellites to be working no problem as per the display of locks on the navigation screen. No tinkering required.
As for the GPS issues, I would guess try another radio version. When you flash a stock ROM back on, it usually replaces the radio. In Southern California I find the .77 RADIO to be excellent with GPS.
Just update Quick GPS, try the .77 radio, stand out on the street for like 2 minutes so it can get a quick lock. With .77 GPS works in my house where it never did before.
I too had a helluva time getting this GPS working tits on the Touch Pro 2 when I first got it, now it's awesome!!
Thanks I will try

I have reflashed my ROM more than once since all of this began in order to fix this problem with no avail, but I cannot say that the radio every changed since I was reflashing with an Energy ROM each time, so I will try what your saying about flashing the radio with some different ones. I am not sure what my stock radio was, so I will just have to experiment, but I will get back to you after I give this a try and let you know what happened if anything.
Got it Working Now
So I tried flashing a new radio. I also found another setting, though in the settings panel that I believe fixed this. It is as follows:
Settings\Connections\Advanced Network
When you're in this area, check the GPRS tab at the bottom. It has two options to set your GPRS to, one is PAP the other is CHAP. Mine was set to CHAP, so I changed it to PAP and VOILA!! Went outside, used Quick GPS, used the HTC GPS Tool, and it found satellites. Then I opened up google maps, bing, TomTom, and they all worked perfectly. So, if anyone else is having a similar problem, then give this a whirl. Make sure you check out different radios as well. I have now and my signal is strong inside and outside with my phone calls, internet, and GPS.
Thanks everyone for the help

Must be your local servers. I was using CHAP without GPS problems. The only difference is that CHAP uses secure authentication with the servers. I'm in LA.
BTW, are you using the "Quick GPS" application to download satellite positions? It really speeds up signal acquisition.
