So Aaron McCarthy discovered a new Vogue rom for Telus users (I REPEAT: TELUS ONLY!!!). It was at one of the known IP addresses which HTC has used. It was accidentally leaked or opened for a tester, I suppose. It's also seemingly no longer available... I get "Directory Listing Denied" when I follow the link now. So, of course I've uploaded my copy to rapidshare. Back up any important files on your phone and then enjoy:
http://rapidshare.com/files/1282900...4350H_3.41.00_Ship_withPPSTPatch1.20.exe.html
It'll be easy to install, just run the EXE on your windows XP/Vista computer, connect your vogue with Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center when the program prompts you to do so, and follow the on-screen instructions. It took me approximately 15 minutes to do this. Add five for letting the phone customize itself.
I also did some messing with it to get everything working. It does not fully function out of box (which is probably why it's not actually released yet).
For me, the steps that got the GPS and Internet to work:
-Dial *22803 , 1 (for English), 1 (program your handset). Wait for reset.
-Install Google Maps and a registry editor.
-Search for a registry key called GPSMODE and change it's dword value from 2 to 4. This may not be necessary, but it worked for me.
<EDIT>Registry change is definitely not necessary, I've tried it both ways with no different effect. What this setting does might be explained better in the next post.</EDIT>
-Soft reset.
-Run Google Maps and any other freeware, no problem.
I'm certain that some GPS programs will require initialization/tweaks, and I'd bet that most of those have already been examined elsewhere in this forum. Anyway the GPS is seemingly solid and accurate. I placed it next to a handheld garmin unit and speed, lattitude, longitude were matched on both devices over a half-hour trip. It will certainly NOT work indoors.
As for Rev.A, I honestly cannot tell you anything about it. I'm in a CDMA only area for the next 3 weeks.
Thanks again to Aaron McCarthy for discovering the Rom and letting us know so that I could copy it before we got locked out. Here's the thread he started : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2385096
by setting GPSMode to 4 you disable the GPS. Not the best idea....
GPSMode 1 = ONLY pure GPS
GPSMode 2 = GPS + aGPS
GPSMode 4 = aGPS only
Got it installed without any issues. However Google maps and the Telus Navigator programs don't seem to be able to find the GPS... Well, to be more precise, googlemaps doesn't give an error. It just sits there seeking satellites. The Telus NAV doesn't get past the startup screen. Any suggestions?
WM6.1 is working fine on my phone but is it possible that I actually don't have the built in GPS even though it is a Telus HTC Touch?

It has been known since a while that all Vogues phones (or CDMA Touch) have the GPS hardware built in. It is just not activated by Telus yet.
This new ROM should be released officially by Telus soon in order to let users have GPS and better performance.

Has anyone else tested to see if Rev A gives better performance?
Also, does this ROM improve Bluetooth and device overall performance?

Thanks for this ROM. Can't be more easy to upgrade a ROM.
GPS is working fine. It took several try and a very clear sky (no tree) to make first connexion. It was so slow to connect that I suspect AGPS (cellular tower triangulation assist) is not working.
At 3 bars of reception, in EVDO REV A zone, I get a DL speed of 150 to 400kb/s which is pretty lame and just a bit better than before rev A.
One problem:
When clicking on status icons on the top bar (volume, battery, etc.), it used to display the control directly. Now it displays an intermediate screen repeating those icons but in a larger mode. It is buggy because it doesn't display message icons if I previously clicked Dismiss. Then I can't go to my messages.
In Start, Settings, System, TouchFLO, there is no setting to remove this screen.
I tried HKLM->Software->HTC->EnlargeTitleBar->Enable=0 without success.
Is it something that comes with WM6.1?
Is it Telus ROM specific?
Do Sprint official ROM got the same problem?
Any reg to remove this?
That is too funny

If you go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 and go to post #14 you can see the guide to improving GPS locks on the telus rom. I mean DRASTICALLY. From initally loading the rom I went from getting 4-5 locks maybe after a few minutes on a cold GPS start then once I changed all the settings and did a soft reset I was getting 6 to 7 satellite locks down in my basement. Pretty impressive
It's not as complicated as it seems to be in the post I made. Pretty straight forward actually and I would recommend it to anyone who wants better GPS reception
In regards to Rev A speeds. I'm in London ontario so would think there would be rev A in the area but I dont get any better download speeds. I still download around 600-800 kbps. Which is really good enough for me. I dont know if rev A actually was supposed to increase your download speed or if it improved upload speeds making Voip easier and allowing you to have data and phone stuff going on at the same time. All I know is my internet speed didnt change but Rev A was enabled.

Every time, before using this, an already established data connexion is needed BEFORE looking for GPS satellite. The GPS will not establish the connection if it's not there. A simple solution is to open Google map and move the map up to a download is required BEFORE making the GPS satellite connexion.

Looks like the official Telus rom is on HTC's site now.
Yep - and it appears to be identical to the one referenced in this thread from 3 weeks ago. That's kind of a disappointment considering how much trouble the tech-naive user is going to have getting the gps to work and getting their data connection back after flashing.

Very lame.
Exact same files and version. http://www.htc.com/us/FAQ_Detail.aspx?p_id=80&act=sd
2 weeks ago I sent a support ticket to HTC stating that the GPS fix is difficult to get, mainly because all GPS assisted features (aGPS) are disabled by default in the radio (can't be fixed by a simple registry tweak). I even pointed them to one solution of many (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 post #14). Then no correction and not even a mention in the documentation.
I just can't imagine how many phone calls they will get from upgraders complaining that the GPS can't find satellites after 5 minutes...

OK, so I have been reading a lot on the gps capabilities of the vogue, and have seen a lot of things out there like the virser gps dll, reg-hacks, gps kick-start, quick-gps, mmeto, and different gps drivers that can all supposedly change the speed at which the gps can get a lock. on a thread over at xda tabout the quickgps one, they were able to get fixes/locks after only about 20-40 seconds! thats the kind of thing we all need...
there is definitely an awful lot of stuff about it, and i have grown pretty confused i must say. i have a sprint vogue and would REALLY like faster connection times.
if there is ANYONE who has some consolidated facts and real numbers/evidence about what (combination) works best, i would greatly apprecaite it, as im sure would many many others.
even though you may have the urge, plz do not post here for at least 1-2 days if you do not have some good evidence/clear consice instructions on how to improve gps signal quality.
thanks a lot guys!,

EDIT: FOUND THE ULTIMATE FIX!! look here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=26410 difference is incredible
i'm using the stock "leaked" ROM for 2+ days without the virser gps dll and without any of the GPS hacks. with Garmin Mobile XT using the GPS Intermediate Driver, i get locks on 7-9 satellites within 30-45 seconds when outside and within 120 seconds when inside. on the flip-side, when using iGO 2006+ with COM 4, it takes 3-6 minutes to get a satellite lock. i used my Sprint Touch to capture this pic on a "recent" west-to-east coast flight....notice the number in the lower left hand corner
I'm using a rom I cooked with the new 3.0x kitchen I cooked using ppcgeeks kitchen ... it's based on the same "leaked" rom .. just customized for me ... anyway ... I get the same kind of lock times listed above ... I use an old version of mapopolis when I travel and google maps while in town (no data connection 5 miles outside of town ... I live in the great wild west ... ya know ... lots of wide open spaces .. LOL) anyway, with google maps I get about 3-5 yards accuracy ... with mapopolis ... maybe a little better ... but always 6-9 satelites ... and no hacks ... I do use htc quick gps ... seems to help

hmm ok thanks a lot for your detailed response. care to attach/point me to the "GPS Intermediate Driver"? so i can see if that might help out my situation, because i am certainly not getting anything like 7-9 locks within 45 seconds.
also, is this on cold or soft boot/start of gps?

When you use Garmin on the GPS Intermediate Driver, don't you get the time/date reset problem? The only time I don't get that problem is when I have it set to COM4. Its really annoying lol.

i ran into the time/date issue once with the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) when i lost the signal going into an underground parking structure. everytime i attempt to set GPS to COM 4, GM XT searches and searches and searches and seems to never connect. GM XT then defaults back to the GPSID. funny you mention the GPSID-time/date relationship: today, for the first time in 5 months, i ran into the same date/time issue today while using my Samsung BJ II. i'm inclined to believe the recent XT updates introduced this problem.
@jim256 - the GPS Intermediate Driver (GPSID) is (as i understand it) a native WinMo 6.0 driver that included with our respective Touch devices.
Cold start times are always going to be slow. That's why the GPStoday plugin is such a valuable addition! If you haven't tried it yet, you need to take a look at it...

Hello there,
What I Have: Att 8525 Herm100
Rom: Att's Mobile 6
Everything is stock but the extended life battery
The problem I am having is when ever I try to activate my WiFi the phone doesn't do anything. I am not sure if there is a wifi card or not but that's want I want to know. I have tried everything from activating it in com manager to going into the settings and activating it manually and nothing happens it acts like I didn't even hit the button to activate it. Is there a wifi card in the phone or is it integrated on the motherboard in the phone. Note: I bought this phone off e-bay and the wifi never worked when I received the phone.
I am new here and if there is a post about this already I am sorry.
I hate it when that happens.
To begin, there were two ATT OEM WM6 roms relevant to the 8525 that I noticed deep in the bowels of XGA.
I chose the later file (higher revision numbers) I found it here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Available Original Shipped WM6 ROM Versions
From comm manager when I click the tower button on within a second the spinning windoze icon shows something is happening. It then starts "sniffing" for my preset wifi connection (ATT supplied 2wire portal 802.11g).
Now, if yours does not show the spinning windoze working icon when you turn on wifi? There obviously is a problem. This could be software, or hardware related (duh). If there is no error message related to "wifi is not an option, unavailable, or screwed" then my first guess is there is something missing or damaged in the ROM update that was applied to your device. As far as I know all 8525 (herm100) were shipped with wm5. It had been mentioned in the volumes of xda that the first AT&T WM6 rom was a little buggy. Try the later released AT&T WM6 update.
It was a run file so no muss no fuss. Sync the phone run the update from the pc, three minutes later the phone is flashed to ATT WM6 professional.
You could take it to a ATT shop? But, I think that without a doubt they would hand it back and say you need a new phone with a 20 year contract and 3g data plan even Obama would blush at.
Try the hard reset. take a picture of the startup screens so you have the numbers and see if the wifi startup is working after the reset. If not then compare the numbers to the above mentioned roms. If the indications are you have the first issue of WM6 from ATT try flashing the second release. If that still fails then your device could indeed have a hardware problem.
The wifi is indeed built into the system and if that chip on the board is not working it could be a overly expensive problem. Possibly a shop has a working board they would swap out cheap? Otherwise, it is a fun phone you can keep notes on, run gps software if you have a bluetooth gps receiver and software like tomtom.
To be honest the wifi on my 8525 has been convenient when around the house to check the local weather radar when I hear a thunder outside, or browse headlines from the porcelain room or even leave messenger turned on incase a gamer friend is looking for someone to get shot up in a game.
I have used the live search voice thing to amaze the neighbors once. But, the limited range of wifi is a real drawback to how truly wonderful that addition could be.
HELP Please! Wi-Fi not working!!!
Hi to XDA all users !!!
MY Hermes - HTC TyTN [Herm200]
I bought HTC Hermes myself year ago.
there was flashed a WM5.0, I've just downloaded from here HARD SPL & WM6,1 (Custom) Flashed.
Wi-Fi will works on WM5.0.
Well here I am at 6.1 flashed and now is not working Wi-Fi. When i pressed Power ON - loading long and nothing happens.
Other methods are also tried on Commanager and Settings - but did not help.
What do I need to do my dear.
HELP!
Thank you for your attention!
Hi Nurk.
Since the wifi worked on wm5 but failed after the 6.1 flash. I would guess the problem is in the 6.1 components. You might start with contacting the kitchen rom you employed for WM6.1 thread and see if this has happened to others. Next step would be to check the radio rom version. I did see on xda an assortment of Radio roms.
If your not totally in love with the current rom you have flashed? Try another 6.1 or even a 6.5 and see whats poppin.

What is the fix for?
What problem is this patch supposed to address? Slow/intermittent GPS lock, Lag, or some other problem?
As far as I can see it is simply an animated GIF set to display during boot and changing some registry entries relating to the GPS intermediate driver and increasing the file system cache.

yes tom,
the reason i added the gps is that the stupid microsoft visual studio wont allow to build cab files with out a file in it.
it indeed adjust a couple of registry settings but if you do it in the way it is writen above you get a gps fix,
It is for the
lag problem, getting no gps signal in any way.

mine is Tmo TP2 and get almost instant sat lock, so I am not going to patch mine for now.
That's the radio version I have. What does the cab file do? Does it automatically change the registry settings for the GPS Intermediate driver? If so, I have made those changes and I still get GPS lag.
gps lag
i work at a auto repair shop and on occasion i get the oppurtunity to drive a customers car that has a dedicated gps. what i have noticed is that the lag time with those dedicated units and my old touch diamond and touch pro is that the lag time is about the same. i have not tested it with my current phone (tp2)just yet but it seems about the same maybe a little faster. imho i think it has something to do with the lag time with the gps signal having to travel so far. if we think about it, the signal has to travel out into space and then back down. things no matter how fast are not instantaneous.
btw i love this phone. i just typed all this on my tp2! great keyboard.
just my two cents
GPS is another reason I miss my HTC Dream. It was fast and worked indoors. SO far, I see no improvement with this radio and .cab. Of course, I already had an alleged GPS fix with a different radio (3.44.25.27 +A-GPS hot fix). I will test outside now. So far nothing indoors. update: well... it does seem to pick up faster outside now. good fix! not great but a bit better than before. good find!
This Fix works great in my TP2...
Question: Installed but my free program down 6MB..? BTW I'm using Miri V 1.1 Manila 2.5
Edit: My Garmin 5.00.20w works better than my TyTNII... It locks inside my house within 5 second.. More amazing in my bed room which I never get any GPS signal... Antonius .. Genius...

download the new program that i just put online.
and try it again.
p.s. did you update your radio rom ?
I have always thought HTC had excellent phone - so I went out and brought the touch pro 2 to to replace my TyTn ii.
boy what a mistake - sorry but I'm really sick of the problems (owned for less than 1 day!!!), first Telstra had the phone so full of crud that it ran like a 3 legged dog, then could not get the darn thing to sync with exchange server until I found a post recommending the change of the setting under one of the data options, this only took 2 hours of troubleshooting (still can't get it to sync when plugged in has to flash a cab for the hardspl to work) - no problem flashed new Rom from 6.1 to 6.5 using the energy rom - which I have to admit fixed all the issues, now fast looks good - all happy.
But no - bloody GPS won't work so after a further 5 hours of stuffing round now 1am have given up. Can't find location settings for the quick GPS (have bloody scoured this forum and google) installed Tom tom 7.19, 7.10 (4 versions so far) - map works just no bloody GPS, google maps won't work - yep no bloody GPS. remove faulty blue-tooth drivers - hard booted, soft booted, even thrown the stupid thing across the room - yep that did not help either.
Never had these issues with the TyTn II - how the heck can a new state of the art phone be just as useless as this.
rant over - off to bed.
@grungysquash. A pity really, but your so far in the minority that after reading all the threads that you said you read I find it hard to believe you don't notice all the raves about this device. If it were me that'd make me think maybe there's something I'm missing. I had a tytn 2 also and wow, that does take me back. Like my tp2 way,way better.
So hearing how many kudos the tp2 gets maybe you should give it a better go.
Now you might think this a stupid question , but I gotta ask as you'd be amazed how many don't know this: Re the gps, Two things are a must to do before it will work properly. Under your network settings the box for being able to see the device location has to be checked. It is usually unchecked by default. Also enable quick gps. Try google maps to test as it is the easiest. The first sat. lock can take a min. I can use my gps with google maps inside most buildings and it is very fast.
Don't be impatient and take it easy and you'll find the answers to your issues, then you'll find your issues wern't much of an issue after all.
Give it a fair shot tho. Good Luck.
P.S. have you checked out ppcgeeks? I don't recall seeing anyone with your handle commenting over there. Maybe I missed it, but that is the place for fantastic tp2 info. Not that xda isn't good.

Install QuickGPS, you'll be able to easily see the status of the GPS with it.. If it's not getting any sats, the GPS is broken for whatever reason. There's not likely any settings in QuickGPS you need to do unless Telestra set it wrong in the registry. I recall reading some folks found UK where they needed US in the QuickGPS registry entries, thus downloading the wrong set of ephemeris data. Possible, but regardless of bad QuickGPS data if it doesn't get sats within a minute there is a hardware problem. QuickGPS data just gives it some initial information in order to more quickly evaluate satellite positions.
Get Energy's rom
You gotta ask yourself, why am I the only person with this problem.

Unlucky mate - you picked the right ROM, just the wrong version. GPS isn't working on the latest NRG ROM. I'm sure it'll be fixed shortly but in the meantime I'd use the previous version.
The TP2 is definitely THE best phone currently available.

am running Pure Energy's 24th rom - which I think is brilliant, if this has a fault (seems there is a post which shows someone else has the identical problem.) then this would explain this.
Will flash the older rom and see how I go - a new day a new challenge, have to admit the phone looks nice again this morning just had to reset the exchange settings after the hard reset. Everything works except the GPS
I did google into ppcgeeks forum but have not joined - have been flashing phones since I struggled with the mighty JamJam with winmo5, (ended up flashing 4 others too for work mates who got sick of the soft reset) have always been able to sort issues like this out just this one I could not resolve.
GPS is fine in the Energy Phoenix2 28002 build. I loaded it shortly before the 28004 version was up'ed and would imagine GPS would be fine there too based on the very minimal amount of changes to the ROM.
GPS seems to be broken in the new 21876 build, as used in the very latest EnergyROM. There weren't any reported problems with GPS in the builds before that. Remember, you've downloaded a brand-new cooked ROM on the day it was released, everyone is effectively beta testing this ROM !
Use one of the preceding versions of EnergyROM and you should be fine.

OK confirmed - it's the ROM - flashed back to 19 Nov NRG EnergyROM GPS working, so it seems the 24 November ROM has a problem which seems to affect the unlucky. I guess the fact I flashed the rom on day of release coupled with the fact it was the first ROM I had flashed on the phone (only hours old) I assumed there was some fault with the unit - when the fault lies with the user. Time to Slap myself DOH
I apologize for my above rant, brought on by hours of frustration and lack of sleep - maybe the three or so beers did not help with the trouble shooting either.
I've been reading myself silly trying to figure this out & my attempts at Searching haven't helped, probably because I'm not fluent enough to use the correct terms. In spite of having this device for several months, I've never learned as much as I'd like. Anyway . . .
I finally flashed the newest stock ROM from HTC several days ago. The process seemed to go fine with one exception: I keep getting a notification that I have a new Voicemail when I don't. I check -- no new Voicemail. I Dismiss, but the the notification keeps coming back periodically. Suggestions?
Other than that, things seemed to go smoothly, and I started slowly getting things back the way I like them. After reading & making sure I understood (or so I thought), I installed the .NET 3.5 Framework so I could use Crud Scraper to get rid of the stuff I clearly remembered using it for.
The .NET part went fine, and then I did the soft reset . . . and lost My Location on the Today screen that shows my weather. It now says I'm in Seattle, which I'm not -- I'm over a mountain range & about 350 miles east of Seattle. When I try to change the location, it doesn't find my town or anything in my area, for that matter..
The mysteriously (to me) reappearing Voicemail Notification is bad enough, but I really rely on the weather, particularly this time of year, and it's driving me crazy that I can't figure this out. Suggestions?
TIA
Did you try looking at the several threads on this ROM in the Rom Development forum? There's a fix in one of them for this problem.
For which problem? And, do you have any idea what thread?
And, yes, I did look in the thread I found (New ATT Tilt2 ROM) -- I believe I read every post before I flashed the latest ROM, even though much of it was over my head. That's where I learned that I had to install .NET 3.5 & reboot before CrudScraper would work.
I recall several people mentioning that the My Location worked flawlessly & how great it was having the location, and I read where one or two people seemed to be having the same weather problem I'm having, but I didn't see an answer. I read in one of the forums that there seems to be a bug (although not confined to the latest ROM) in certain parts of the world, and I read a thread where there seemed to by a problem with My Location in a cooked ROM that might or might not have been related to GPS not working. I read something else where My Location wouldn't work with 3G, only with Wi-Fi, so I tried that, even though My Location was working just fine after I flashed to the latest ROM -- that didn't help.
So, it's not like I'm asking because I hadn't already tried to find solutions myself. I'm not doubting that there are answers to both of my issues but rather that after spending several hours over the weekend trying to find the solutions, I've been miserably unsuccessful. Otherwise, I wouldn't have asked.

For the My Location feature, only part of the service is understood. For the most part, the location is determined by the cell towers your device connects to. It depends on where you are as well as the signal strength. Sometimes the request is not sent or received to/from the tower(s). It is more accurate usually when 3G is turned off. The alternative is to add your city manually. If the location servers can't figure out where you are, then it won't work.
Normally the stock ROMs fix this and work wonderfully after flashing. The best solution to this is to turn off 3G to get a fix or find your city manually.

I'm feeling really stupid here, but being a glutton for punishment, I'll keep trying.
Is it possible that maybe there was something wrong with the towers here that just happened to coincide with the soft reboot after installing .NET? The reason I ask is that My Location is now correct. Yay! That would be just my luck: bad timing.
Any suggestions about the incorrect Voice Mail notification? It for sure comes back each time I power up the phone. It seems to me it also reappears at other times, but I'm not positive about that -- I'm going to try to pay better attention.

Make sure to install .NET CF 3.5 to the device and not the storage card. You'll then need to restart, if it doesn't ask you to do so. You then need to force it to use 3.5 over 2.0. Use a registry editor and navigate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/.NETCompactFramework. Change the DWORD data of entry 2.0.7045.00 from 1 to 0. Then change the DWORD data of entry 3.5.7283.00 from 0 to 1 and then reset. This disables 2.0 and enables 3.5.
For a decent registry editor that can be used from the PC side, check out CERegEditor if you don't already have an editor of choice.
For the voicemail problem, there are two known solutions. You can either have someone call and leave you a voicemail. You would then check it and delete it. You can also simply call your provider and have them reset your voicemail account. Either one should work.
If neither of those options works for/appeals to you, you can give this a shot. There are no guarantees that it won't come back after a soft reset, though. Using a Registry editor, navigate to the following keys:
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line1\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line2\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Total\Unread
There should be a value name "Count" with a REG_DWORD value
Change value to 0 in decimal or 00 in Hex.
It should remove voicemail notification icon from the taskbar.

Many thanks! For the Voicemail, I used method one, and it worked
And, thanks for the instructions (and the reg edit program suggestion) to force use of .NET CF 3.5 because I missed that part -- yikes.
I'm on a dedicated mission to cut down on the elecronics I have to carry around, so I need to learn more about the features of the Tilt2 because if I can just figure things out (which I've not forced myself to do), the Tilt2 will, I think, be able to replace my PDA & iPhone.
Anyway, thanks again for your help!
