[Q] Visionary temp root doesn't work anymore. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With r14, it adds Superuser and then keeps cycling through the temp root process until I hit back or home. Of course none of my apps have root access anymore and I get denied on terminal emulator. So what recourse do I have besides re-flash my phone to factory?

Read the Wiki!! gfree is the way to be!!

One of the reasons people recommend against using Visionary is because it can be wonky. If you are still S-ON than nothing permanent can be done with /system but maybe one of the other folders that gets modified when Visionary does it's temp root got messed up.
Why are you using temp-rooting? I know I used temp root (using visionary) for the first month I had my phone in case something went wrong and I needed to return it. The gfree permanent root method isn't hard (other than getting ADB working which can be tricky) and will solve your problem.

been doing my reading
my radio is 26.03.02.26_M
which means gfree wont work and i need to downgrade, right?
also i ran into the issues listed on S-Off no root
cp: can't stat `/system/xbin/busybox': Not a directory
etc...
so do i need to downgrade first and how?

I have the same radio as you, I used the gfree method 2-3 days ago and, it worked for me.

s-off, but no root access?

After doing with the PERM ROOT, i did reboot my G2 with volume down+power, "s-off" shows on the screen, but something just happened.
after rebooting, i just uninstall VISIONary, then i rebooted my G2 again, to make sure, i did volume down+power again. Good, s-off is still there. When i came into the home screen, i pressed the Root Explorer, oooooops, i got no root access to open this software....
To check this, i re-install VISIONary, --root now---"your device is already rooted".
All in all, i have the "s-off", but i have no root access.
Help!!!
A big thanks here and looking for some one would like to answer me.
Install Superuser (from ChainDD) and make sure it allows access for your root explorer. Also, try the steps again to get S-Off. After you do the 'sync' command, do a reboot back to your home screen (not bootloader) to see if the changes stick.
And don't start a new thread. Post in the old one.
Make sure Visionary is not set to "Root on Boot".
Reboot the phone and run Visionary again.
Make sure you have the newest version of visionary. Run it to root, open terminal emulator type in "SU" then type "sync" wait two minutes. reboot the phone.
You don't need visionary after you get pern root. I don't have it anymore. If you followed the guide then you should be golden.

Then you'll need to visit the VISIONary thread and download it from there. It was suspended from the Android Market.
Try to do the stock PC10.img to start all over and just go thru the steps.

Well I had the r12 version. Tried the temproot (checked for su and it was there.) and then permroot (the phone forced a reset) when it came back on, there was no root. So I decided to go manually. Followed all instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965. Did Everything exactly besides step 6. Well I did it but it said that I already had root. So i proceeded with step 7 and waited five minutes (just to be sure) and then restarted. Checked and confirmed that s-off. Powered on the phone and still no root access. I figured that step 6 may have thrown me off so i tried step 6 and 7 again to no avail. Stuck with s-off but no root.
I had perma-root yesterday. Working and tested... mui happy.
Got OTA update late last night (Southeast US / Tampabay FL). Accepted it like a dumbass.
Currently:
Phone works... I didn't get "teh brix".
VISIONARY tells me "your device is already rooted"
SuperUser has my Root-apps listed with green radio buttons.
su from terminal results in permission denied
screenshot will no-longer run (This program requires root access)
Recovery Boot = S-OFF
Confused = Yes, very
Can't re-root as visionary won't really run properly. Uninstalled Visionary and installed Visionary+. Still says "Your device is already rooted".
S-off no boot fix?
So to reply to my own thread once I've gone through all of the steps repeatedly, I wound up with s-off and no root. even after running visionary+ temp root and then entering (in terminal emulator on the phone) su (granted superuser) and then typing sync and then reboot. Did this over and over again with the same result but to get it to work(for me anyways) i had to run temproot, and then run permroot and then reboot. Mind you, I have already done this step before but it didnt seem to work until afterwards. Hopes that this helps SOMEONE.
For people facing a similar issue, use the RATC method instead of VISIONary, you should get perm root then.
I had the same issue I followed unforgiven's instructions
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
after step 7 and you reboot run visionary again and you should gain perm root, hope this helps.

also make sure usb debuggin is checked!!
then after it temp roots open up app again and click attempt perm root now
viola! thats all i did and been running roms ever since! hope that helps!
That might also brick your phone... you should get insurance on your phone then its only a 130 dollar brick but seriously use the rage method or use the new real root/sim unlock. Its stickied in the dev section. Its about as easy as it can be.

I've never been excited about one-touch root methods. One small thing goes wrong, a glitch in the program or something and boom, dead phone. At least the other way if I brick it, it's my fault.
I'm practicing adb in preparation for the rooting of my phone, I'm aiming for a late December root.

Like shortlived and stevie said just try the rage method its fairly simple. Just take some time to learn how to use adb and then it'll be a breeze. Also adb is almost a necessity when it comes to rooting/modding android phones. Also if u get stuck or confused bout anything there are plenty of useful threads just search lol good luck

Adb is very simple. All you need to know for the rage method is "adb push" if you can open a cmd window on your pc, learn a few dos commands like "cd" and "cd.." then your all set. There are some very good guides to get you set up with adb just check the stickies. And good luck!

Just use visionary r14 to temp root. then look through the overclocking thread and find the GScript method of Overclocking. I permanently rooted my first g2 and then the sd card gave out on me and I sent in it for warranty. Idk if they checked to see if its rooted or not but I haven't been charged. The only issue with perma rooting the g2 is the fact that if you screw up they can see if you've tampered with it and if you've only temp rooted it, from what I understand, the temp root is much safer but you have to root it every time you reset your phone (turning it back on from an off state). small price to pay imo. GL though!
Get over your fear, read over the instructions, and root using rage. It took me a half-hour to root my phone, and that was the first thing I did when I got it.
I think the new easiest way is gfree? I haven't done it because I was already permrooted. It also should unlock your phone (sim, radio, some other thing I don't remember.)

There is a video that walks you thru rooting with VISIONary r14. I followed the video and worked perfectly. Just a note I unistalled my version of VISIONary first then followed there video on temp-rooting first and then onto perm-rooting. I bricked my first G2, got it replaced and was scared to try again, but if followed there videos and worked out perfect, now running CyanogenMod 6.1 rc4 and my phone is super charged. heres the links thanks to dcogen:
Do this to gain temp root:

Then this to gain permanent root:

Then this to flash a recovery and load a custom ROM:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how...g2-htc-vision/
And here's how to completely unroot for good measure :
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how...g2-htc-vision/
Note: I was running stock OTA updated rom, rebooted to un-temproot, installed VISIONARY r14 from MODACO's website and followed the videos to the tee(first temproot video, even though I already knew how to temp root, I followed exactly what they did in the video to temp root. second Perm rooted following the video, then installed custom ROM per video), I used the link in the perm root video to download the wpthis.ko file and the hboot.img

SuperCID, SIMUnlock, Radio S-Off is the new Permroot. Its actuallty true permroot. Those of you who think your permrooted technically arent. You just have a "hacked" Hboot. Doing the gfree method allows you to
1: Flash pc10img (stock rom) without the whole hex editing process and also flash roms from another carrier.
2: Your sim is unlocked (maybe wont matter for some of you but its nice to have for travel)
3: S-off, need I say more.
When flashing back to stock you also keep S-Off and do not lose it via gfree and from what I'm hearing soon there will be a way to revert back to S-On via gfree. Just incase we need to send our phones back in for any reason. Cant leave any trail of evidence.
many thanks
finally got the courage and did it. now running cyanogen. thanks so much guys.

Sorry that's not right. SuperCID/SIM Unlock/Radio S-OFF doesn't have anything to do with perm root. Yes, this is the new way of totally unlocking your phone, but you can be full perm rooted and still have radio S-ON.
Seems to be that some people use the term "permanent root" to refer to a full unlock rather than just the rooting ability itself (i.e. run as the root user).
I think what you means to say is that those you who think you are S-OFF without running gfree technically aren't, you've got an engineering hboot which makes it look like S-OFF.

[Q] Problem with unrevoked

I tried rooting with unrevoked, it said Done on the screen (PC) but it actually hasn't rooted it. After researching it appears it need to "finish it off" and use unrevoked forever (http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever) which i tried but I get an error Got Radio version 5.11.05.27 E:unsupported system e:update failed
any ideas?
Are you sure your not mixing rooting and S-offing up? Unrevoked forever will only work on CDMA phones.
What happens when you download terminal emulator and type: su

Unrevoked is only a soft root for the desire, if you want full root, after using unrevoked, search for alpharev to complete the procedure, unrevoked forever is not supported on a gsm desire
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Probably. Yeah i just read it's only the desire cdma that is supported.
oh......a dialog box popped up saying will you allow blah blah
confused. i want to edit the gps.conf file using android commander but that says i need root. so what has unrevoked done? i thought that rooted it
You are rooted and can use most apps that require root, but you can not write to the system partition while booted. If you need to do anything to the system partition do it while in recovery or use [AlphaRev] Public release S-OFF HTC Desire GSM. Just make sure you really know what you are doing before S-offing your device.
Soft root only allows R/W access to /system when in recovery, if you wan full access like i said try alpharev
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
thanks. how do i write to it in recovery? i don't fancy doing that AlphaRev thing
You need to get familiar with ADB. Do some searching on that. This might also help you to get started.
Also make a nandroid backup before you edit anything on the system partition in case you (accidentally) mess something up, this why you can alway revert back.
If you new to nandroid as well, some searching on that should also give all the answers needed.

gfree problems

I have a problem rooting a friend's phone using gfree.
When I rooted my phone, I used a different method since it was in the early days of rooting the desire z. I've followed the instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
Everything seems to work correctly until I execute ./gfree -f
At this point I get the error "Error reading input file" and the phone gets stuck (I have to remove battery to boot it up again).
Anyone has had this problem before? Possible fixes? Any help is appreciated.

You're running as root though (# prompt), so you have at least got temp root even if it isn't permanent.
You're getting an error when it tries to disable the write protection though, so I am guessing it is indeed temp root and you lose it after a reboot.

How much of a pain would it be for you to re-flash the ROM and see if it's happier after that ? (e.g. how difficult to get your data/settings back ?)
Let's see if anyone can come up with another idea.

Well, it should work perfectly with that ROM version. That's the same version that I'm using. If you don't mind re-flashing your ROM (with the same version) it could be worth a try. I am not saying that I think it will definitely fix it, this is a long shot, but I can't think what else to suggest right now.
Edit - have you also tried the older method using the "insmod" command, the one in the threads on rage ? That would be interesting to double-check that the insmod is coming up with the "wrong" error message, similarly showing that it failed to disable the NAND write protection.

You probably need to push superuser to your phone in a different way. I had a similar problem using gfree. Hold on and I will send you a link to the nook method that I used. You do this after you run rage and are in the root shell on terminal emulator. (Pound symbol at the beginning of the command line). once you push superuser this way it locks in itself. then you can run the ./gfree command hopefully. I never had a problem with that command before I got the proper superuser but it might help you. Wait 1 and I will send the link.

http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Installing_su_and_the_Superuser_app
That should take you to the proper page. Don't run the first command that starts with unzip. Its easier to download the superuser zip to your desktop and then extract it to the root of Your android sdk tools folder. Aka put it in the tools folder and not inside any other folder that might be in your tools folder. Then run the next two commands on adb after you navigate to your androidsdk/tools folder to install. The next commands that you run in your root shell are run with terminal emulator. You should still be in a root shell if you used rage and haven't rebooted your phone. Pound sign will be present. Pm me if you have problems or if you are confused in any way.

[Q] Su only 0 bytes

A few months ago, I attempted to root my Desire HD with the help of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427
I got S-OFF and I successfully temprooted with Visionary, but when the rest of the instructions did not present any results with permroot, I did something stupid and copied a su file(really the su update for Visionary, I realise that now) to /system/bin/ and now I have a su file 0 bytes in size and I rebooted. Because of this empty su file, I can't even use Visionary to get temproot, thus I cannot remove it because of the empty su file preventing me from temprooting with Visionary.
I posted the question on that thread already, but I haven't gotten a reply yet. My question is whether or not there is a way to get rid of su via Linux(since that is my main operating system, I was wondering if there was a way to gain root access via Linux instead of from the phone), and if not, if I can flash the phone with a RUU(or custom ROM) instead via fastboot(as I understand, I've essentially rendered adb useless).
If neither of those are possible, it would help if a Dutch xda user with sufficient knowledge in this could help me, would it be possible for me to bring this in to the shop and have them fix it/flash the original firmware on my phone? I still have at least half a year of guarantee plus insurance(although that applies more to hardware failures, theft and accidental damage).
you can just flash the 1.32 ruu and you are back to factory, then use visionary again to root it. Is your phone radio S-OFF ? And is your phone branded or unbranded, greetings from amsterdam

My phone is entirely unbranded, thank Android for Vodafone.
And yes, I do have radio S-OFF. So I can just flash the 1.32 RUU and I can start over? If so, which RUU should I choose(I read somewhere that the Vodafone UK RUU is the same as the Vodafone NL), and how should I proceed to flash it?
Greetings from Leiden!
If would use the standard WWE 1.32, if your phone is unbranded then thats the same, as you got it from the store. Yes you can start over after RUU is finshed with Visionary and you be fine.
Remember that flashing with RUU will trash your userdata, so backup anything thats needed.
