[Q] Problem with unrevoked - Desire General

I tried rooting with unrevoked, it said Done on the screen (PC) but it actually hasn't rooted it. After researching it appears it need to "finish it off" and use unrevoked forever (http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever) which i tried but I get an error Got Radio version 5.11.05.27 E:unsupported system e:update failed
any ideas?

Are you sure your not mixing rooting and S-offing up? Unrevoked forever will only work on CDMA phones.
What happens when you download terminal emulator and type: su

Unrevoked is only a soft root for the desire, if you want full root, after using unrevoked, search for alpharev to complete the procedure, unrevoked forever is not supported on a gsm desire
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

Probably. Yeah i just read it's only the desire cdma that is supported.
oh......a dialog box popped up saying will you allow blah blah
confused. i want to edit the gps.conf file using android commander but that says i need root. so what has unrevoked done? i thought that rooted it

You are rooted and can use most apps that require root, but you can not write to the system partition while booted. If you need to do anything to the system partition do it while in recovery or use [AlphaRev] Public release S-OFF HTC Desire GSM. Just make sure you really know what you are doing before S-offing your device.

Soft root only allows R/W access to /system when in recovery, if you wan full access like i said try alpharev
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

thanks. how do i write to it in recovery? i don't fancy doing that AlphaRev thing

You need to get familiar with ADB. Do some searching on that. This might also help you to get started.
Also make a nandroid backup before you edit anything on the system partition in case you (accidentally) mess something up, this why you can alway revert back.
If you new to nandroid as well, some searching on that should also give all the answers needed.

Unrevoked vs. Unrevoked Forever

Can someone please explain clearly the difference between Unrevoked 3 (.22) and Unrevoked Forever (for EVO use).
I've read both Wiki's and it seems, for the EVO, that both permanently give root, unlock NAND, and s-off.
If I root with Unrevoked 3, what exactly would be the reasoning for flashing Forever?
Please answer specifically for EVO use.
Thanks

sent from my bad-ass EVO!
Unrevoked forever achieves S-OFF, which means, even if for some reason you become "unrooted" (such as accepting an OTA) you can always go to recovery and flash a rooted rom. S-OFF is a somewhat permanent NAND unlock.
Unrevoked 3.22 includes the forever flash after the root process, however, I have noticed sometimes it doesn't flash properly, so anyone using unrevoked 3.22, should verify they are S-OFF in bootloader. If you are still S-ON, then download and flash the unrevoked forever .zip until you get S-OFF.
Thanks, but its just hard for me to believe that the whole point of Forever is "just in case" you don't achieve s-off with 3.22. It has to do something extra right?
What is this stuff I've been reading that its not permanent... or is this just old info. When I read the 3.22 wiki it says that it "now" achieves root as of 3 whereas before it did not.

Well forever was released after other root methods. So people who rooted either manually or simple root or whatever.. won't have S-OFF, unrevoked were the first to come out with that, and the forever .zip download, lets those people have it too.
Old versions of unrevoked did not reach permanent nand unlock so you'll read a lot of old stuff about how unrevoked isn't a "full root", but now with forever, it does.
Ok, so by rooting with Unrevoked 3 I don't need to flash Unrevoked Forever, right? Because now with version 3 I achieve the same things that Forever does??...
Is this correct.

I rooted with unrEVOked 3 and have S-OFF so you should be fine.

In theory yes, as I stated, unrevoked 3.xx has included the forever flash, but you just need to double check that it all went through, there have been many reports (in the IRC chan, and my own experience with a replacement EVO) that people are rooted but not S-OFF after finishing unrevoked 3.xx.

As above.
op-put simply, do the unrevoked3.xx to root your phone. if you get s-off in the process then good no need to do anything else. if you still got s-on then you need to run unrevoked forever. simple as that. just because it worked for someone else does not mean that it will work for you. just do it and then verify it is nand unlock.
OK, just rooted my EVO for the 2nd time ever. Went pretty easy. However, I was using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and it took a minute to figure out how to run the reflash program as a root user. I did get some errors about the radio not being supported and update failed. After a reboot I noticed that I did not have s-off but did have the ClockworkMOD recovery and the superUser Permission app. So, I ran unrevoked forever and viola I now have s-off (and the unrevoked splash screen). I see now why this is useful, just wondering why I had errors with my radio version.
Code:
unrEVOked forever S-OFF patch v1.1
Verifying system type...

So I would assume I just need to run the .exe file with the phone turned booted back up?

Using the engineering bootloader, like simple root did, has unlocked the NAND (s-off) since day one. Unrevoked just figured out a way to do it with other bootloader versions
Even more questions of whether I'm truly rooted or not...
First time posting although I've been lurking for quite a while so hopefully I don't get flamed out of here on my first attempt.
First I did root my Evo using unrevoked 3, all seemed to go well and correctly as I ended up with S-OFF, superuser app, etc. I created a backup and everything, (still running stock Sense ROM.) Do I need to try using Unrevoked Forever now?
I started reading posts about backing up RSA keys and WiMAX partitions etc and when I connected the phone (yes usb debugging and charge only); opened a command prompt and browsed to the ADB directory I never get the # confirming I have root access. (I only get the $)
Now from what I'm reading Clockwork mod backs up the WiMax anyway but I still wanted to walk through the process to get more familiar with it. I guess my first question is do I really need to back up the partition and keys if I have a successful nandroid backup?
Also I installed root check and the under the basic setting it said I had no root access, and then under the advanced setting it said I did.
I tried installing Ti backup and clicking under problems to install busy box thinking that may be the problem, but I don't see the setting it describes there where I can change to install busybox.
Finally I also downloaded the busybox installer. It gives two options of where to install it in either /system/bin/, or /system/xbin/....does it matter? Will installing it this way be ok or do I need to push through ADB? If I need to push through ADB then obviously I need to get my # root access figured out.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can try and help me make heads or tails of this situation.

[Q] DHD rooted using Unrevoked3

I have rooted my DHD using unrevoked3. I have super user permissions app, and clockwork mod recovery. Then I read that you can't install a custom rom without S-OFF. Do I still need to do the Visionary+ w/DHD eng script?
I thought my DHD still had S-ON but now I don't think I could have clockwork without it being off.... I'm confused.
Anyways I did go ahead and attempt the Visionary+, but perm root doesn't seem to do anything. I could probably skip that step I guess. The DHD script complains about busybox not being installed which is probably done during the perm root of visionary. I then installed Titanium Backup and did the check errors function and installed busybox. It said it installed, but terminal emulator still complains about busybox.
Confused. Can anyone help me?

btw if you have rooted using unrevoked and have clockwork mod installed, you dont need to s-off to flash a rom, you already have write acess to the nand in recovery
How did you do that using unrevoked on DHD?
or you remove nandlock only with unrevoked and root with visonary ?
Something isn't right here. It isn't possible to root dhd with unrevoked

Someone Swyped my idea.
Further information on Unrevoked & DHD
I seem to be having the same problem as the OP.
A bit of background: I just upgraded from my HTC Hero, and had some experience of rooting and installing custom ROMS on that device. My first job when I got my new HTC Desire HD was to get it rooted so I could get all Orange's crap off of it and have a streamlined new phone.
However, in my haste, I used Unrevoked, failing to notice the difference between a bog-standard HTC Desire and the newer HTC Desire HD. The upshot: Unrevoked *did* succeed in rooting my phone and installing ClockworkMod Recovery, but now the recovery partition thinks it's an old-fashioned HTC Desire and so won't install DHD ROMS. I can install bog-standard Desire ROMS to my heart's content.
So, I'm in a bit of a mess. I want to install a DHD ROM on my DHD, but I can't. Also, now that I've already gone through one rooting process, the standard procedure doesn't work, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. Should I:
- try to get the phone back to its unrooted condition as it was when it came out of the box (in which case how do I do that?)
- flash a different recovery partition in the hopes that I can get it to recognise that my phone's a DHD and not an old standard Desire?
- fiddle about with the ROMs to get them to bypass the device checks (in which case how do I do that?)
Any other suggestions, let me know. It's possible I may have stumbled on a new method for rooting a DHD...
To fix it, just flash 1.32.405.6 RUU.
But I have to say, that is not possible
Desire ROMs on DHD, without S-OFF, everything is just simply wrong. Are you even sure that you have a Desire HD? Please send me a picture of your Desire HD running some Desire ROM.
oops
OK, it appears that there's a much simpler solution. Orange appear to have sent me the wrong phone.
Sigh...
Hahhahhah, good job Orange
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
ok, so to Orange's credit, I've sent back the wrong phone, and they've sent me the right one, next day delivery, having knocked 40% off the original price. Looking forward to playing with it this evening - I won't be touching Unrevoked with a barge-pole!
thanks @jkoljo for alerting me to the possibility that I might have been sent the wrong thing!
we get there in the end...
Very nice, good luck with your new phone

S-OFF/root problems

I managed to root and install cm7rc1 with the newest radio and when i went back into fastboot, I noticed that S-ON was activated again. did a search and discovered that crazy HTC sets security and somehow i undid my S-OFF. I was going to use the .exploid root method but i can't write to the phone anymore. I think i still have clockworkmod recovery. so am i still rooted? can i even flash an OTA update. any suggestions? thanks.
(update: in my haste i forgot the search, i'll delete this if i find a solution)
To figure out if you still have root you can go into Terminal and type "su" if superuser comes up, you accept and it changes the symbol to a # then you're still root but you may not be S-OFF anymore.
First off if u just rooted it it will still have s on the only way to get soff is wilt the alpharev exploit and only way to lose soff is to reflash the hboot and cm7 does not do that so I think u never had soff unless u did the alpharev
After much reading I think I finally understand. I've been spoiled with the nexus one which obviously doesn't have this problem. This is my wife's phone. I thought that after rooting I would get s-off. Anyway, I guess without s-off I have to always update.zip into clockworkmod recovery to flash a cm rom? I am still unclear how to alpharev. Sounds like I need to burn a utility CD and then the app automatically forces s-off. Will need to read more. Thanks for the replies/help

[Q] Probs while flashing with unrevoked3

Hi @all,
i started to root my Htc Desire via unrevoked3. Unrevoked3 says after flashing "... error. Is u firmeware to new?".

Is Froyo not supported with unrevoked3?
What can i do?

Hi and thx for u advice. But i cant find the 3.21 Version for download. I have used the newest version but no root. I really want to root this device but i have no idea what to do. Any help?
Try again and again. Sometimes it will work after a few times. Assuming your did everything like you should do
unrevoked website has only got this for EVO 4G and Wildfire - it says "some applications from the market that cause incompatibilities" it maybe the same thing so uninstall a few apps and retry
Make a factory reset (settings - sd card and internal storage)- and then try again.
That helped me, when getting the "is your firmware to new"...
REMEMBER to backup your sd-card on to pc!!

thx... what is pvt4 and where do i have to normaly find it
greets nikkylodion
1. Power off the phone.
2. press volume down and power at the same time.
3. See on top left corner of the screen, confirm if it is PVT-4 on the screen.
If it is, most likely you have erase size 40000. This can be further confirm by issuing command in terminal 'cat /proc/mtd'.
But if you don't know how, forget about it.
Anyway...if it is pvt-4, make sure to you use amon-ra recovery instead of clockwork.

[Q] Unrevoked Rooting Problems

Hey,
I've been trying to root my HTC Desire, which led me to Unrevoked (instructions from rootmydroid.co.uk).
I've installed and uninstalled HTC Sync, enabled USB Debugging, allowed Unknown Sources, etc.
Using both the latest version of Unrevoked 3.32 and older 3.21 - the software reports "Internal error: Couldn't find misc".
I was then told to use a custom recovery image, which I downloaded and used with Unrevoked (both versions), where it all went well until it stopped at the recovery image screen and appeared to be doing nothing. After reboot, still no root.
Hopefully you guys can help me out.
Chris
installed the hboot drivers from unrevoked?
actually - do a search on the forum - I am 99% sure someone had the 'misc' error before and there's a fix for it...
Just spent an hour researching and as I went to post it I got a white screen, losing my post. Stupid phone, I'll use the app in future.
Basically, I couple posts say that downgrading the HBOOT worked for them. A couple others recommend following the manual DIY guide, though being new to this I'd probably avoid that.
I should probably point out I have an Orange branded Desire. One post said that previously these phones needed to pay for a 'gold card' to get rooted, but wasn't sure if this was still the case.
So, just wanted to ask afresh on advise for steps to take to do this.
Gold card probably needed then as branded
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
You can make yourself a gold card
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
I implemented the gold card successfully. Using Unrevoked3, it goes well until "running root...", "this was a triumph", "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash?". (The older Unrevoked 2.2 still returns the misc error).
I have installed Unrevoked's HBOOT drivers & restarted PC, installed and uninstalled HTC Sync... to no avail.
Any help appreciated.

I followed the guide, but I'm getting "adb not recognized as an internal or external command" repeatedly. Do I need the Android SDK installed or something (it doesn't say that).
I reaplied to you an android forums. But matDroid is correct. And yes you need adb set up. See the adb faq in my Sig. It gives you the minimum effort method to achieve this
Thanks, I got adb working after isntalling Android SDK quite some time ago, just haven't updated this thread since.
As I mentioned on Android Forums, the downgrade didn't go well (similar to this photo).
I then tried installing a couple RUU's, which I'm told were the wrong ones, leaving me with the HTC logo and 4 /!\
Installing a stock RUU has brought it back to life.
I'll continue trying to root soon.
