What a good Auto Killer on EB13? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to use Adao Task Manager but on EB13, it seems that the autokill function is broken. I tried Auto Killer from the market and was told that didn't work either. Anyone have a preference on a good auto killer that'll increase battery life greatly?
Thanks

I think in 2.2, auto-killers have lost their touch, so says the changelog in Adao Task Manager app. It's harder for task managers to kill tasks on Froyo than on Eclair due to some system changes... i think...

I just use advanced killer for froyo

Adao task manager still works for me on EB13. I'm careful to set certain things to ignore, but with that taken care of it seems to be working... unless some other black magic is occuring...

I do the same but it seems seconds later, programs seem to pop up on their own. If I wait a minute, its as if I never killed the tasks in the first place

This is because of code changes in Froyo. I keep a widget(process monitor widget from market) ans set it up the way i like it(excluding and including) then if it says an app is running i click the widget, click the app, click settings, and it takes you to the Manage Applications part for that app, then hit force stop. The widget is useful, but the app is useless now.

I assume FroYo automatically kills apps then?

I'm using atk without a problem

Close an Application?

Hi
This might be a stupid question, but anyways:
I bought me a HTC Desire yesterday and im very happy with it.
Now i installed the Advanced Task Killer as i heard its a good app.
Now, every time i open something, like the SNESoid Player, or even my SMS(Messages), and the close it by pressing the Home or back button, i see afterwards in the Task Killer that its still running!?
So, how do i "close" an application, or is this just normal? It's pretty weird to me.
Thanks
This is one of the most asked and answered questions. Search and you shall find.
You probably used a WM device before Android I can imagine. Android OS handles all that stuff automatically, you shouldn't worry about apps not closing because when an app isn't used it isn't using either memory or CPU. When a new application opens and needs memory, the one(s) still running will close and give space for the new one.
As "ArtieQ" said it's not recommended to use a task killer.
But if you really need to stop a program you can use your native task manager, from "settings">applications>manage applications - then when the list of applications loads, you can press menu button and choose "filter" and then "running". Now when you choose an application from the list, it will show you information for it and an option to "force stop" it, that is to close it.
Thanks alot!
Well, i used a crappy iPhone 3G before..no multitasking you know
I was looking for an answer to this question and find something here but I am still a little bit confused : many applications that I have tested dont close if I press the home or the back button and they don't have any "quit" or "exit" command or menu entry. I was facing some battery issues with all these apps in the background. It's true that uninstalling some of them and force closing others in the app manager solved the issue but it is really not confortable to go in the app manager every time after using the phone to close the apps and save battery. I am wondering if an auto-close application exist in the market...
Advanced task manager has an autokill function within It's settings. It also has a desktop widget that you can press to kill apps when you want. You will probably want to add some of your apps to the ignore list though so notifications etc still work ok

I remember that installed somthing like advanced task manager and it ended up by eating my battery charge cause it was running all the time. I'll test this and report back.
Thanks for the tip
Instead of using a task manager/killer consider using 'autostarts' which is an app (paid) which allows you to stop apps starting automatically.
For example, maps gets started when you do almost anything and once started really eats your battery.
I've been using autostarts for a while now and would definitely recommended it for battery saving.
thanks for this tip iain2510

Which appk killer?

I'm confused which one to install...
advanced task killer
advanced task cleaner
there're so many, please advice. Thanks.
I use advanced Task killer, as do most people I beleive.
it works a treat.
any particular settings i shoud know?
not sure. I just it straight from install and works great. if you go INTO app killer you'll see lots of tick boxes, if you untick anything you don't want to kill it'll remember settings.

Seriously? but doesn't the Android OS burn battery life and keep stuff in memory and take resources?
2.2 is pretty good with memory management. I use Advanced Task Killer, but only for killing apps manually that are floating around. I don't use it for any kind of automatic task killing,

Desire is my 3rd Android phone - I had a G1 and a Hero previously.
I used to use an automatic Task Killer initially when I had my G1, but I actually found it caused more problems than it solved. So, I stopped, and everything started working better.
If you are finding your phone lags, chances are that the issue is an errant app. Whilst "killing" it will relieve the symptoms, the real solution is to dump the app causing the problem.
Android *is* very good at resource management, if left alone to do it's own thing.

Dave

[Q] Froyo Task Killer

So I updated my phone to EB13 and none of my task killers work. I was wondering what is the best task killer for froyo. Really all I want it for is to end touch wiz in the background because I use launcher pro.
Doesn't need task killer
Supposedly fro-yo does not need a task killer.

uhhh, yeh it does.
make sure ATK security level is set to low so you can see all processes
look for "com." process that ends in twlauncher
kill
There is already a built in task killer on epic just hold down the home button an it brings it up in 2.2 I noticed it usually kills tasks anyway.

Why not just delete TouchWiz altogether?
Any possible way to prevent apps from restarting 5 minutes after killing them?
Have you tried going to settings > Applications > Manage applications > ['All' tab] > TwLauncher then hitting force close? It is kind of a pain but if you only have to do it once its not too bad.
I fixed Touch Wiz but now all these apps that I never use are restarting after I kill them. My battery drains like crazy now compared to how it was in Eclair.

Make sure your Time Without Signal isn't higher than 50%. If it is then update your PRL and Profile and reboot. That drains the battery. You can also set some auto kill settings in ATK Froyo version.

[Q] My Game Apps Closes A Lot

when i play a game and i need to press my screen a lot for some reason the app just closes on me..what is the problem here?.can you guys help me?.the games im playing are defender and the world of magic..
if you are getting a lot of force closes you may need to fix the permissions on your phone (you can download an app to do this, I use Rom Manager app), that usually takes care of all the FC's i get, another thing to consider is that it may be the app or game itself and you need to update the apk, also you ram may be bogged down try freeing up some memory and if your rooted with an over clock kernal you can try to OC when playing ram intensive games
there are a few threads about this already...games dont force close, they just quit...has something to do with samsungs built in task manager

idk...but i wouldnt do it, its a very efficient task manager, and its built by samsung. I think its just a little to agressive
i was under the impression that the random closes were caused by the "soundpool" bug affecting all GSII devices. if removing the Samsung task manager fixes it, I'm sooo on it. I'm running naerok's bare bones rom and task manager is removed by default but i added it back. will reflash tonight without it and see.

How Long Before You Need A Soft Reset?

How long does your OG Pro go before it starts to feel laggy and unresponsive to make you need to reboot the phone?
With the use of the Task Manager Widget, Which lets you optimize the RAM and then keeping the Recent Apps empty , I'm going to have to say.. Never.
BUT, As a rule of thumb, I will Restart the phone after I have installed an App and have all the start up "work" for that App accomplished.
I don't ever feel the need to reboot..I don't run any task managers or anything.
I restart almost twice a day. It's a bad habit from my iPhone days of 2 years ago. I've done it with every android phone I own and it has become an OCD thing now. Trying to quit but it's hard.

Dear lord, That must have been tough times.
Oh it was. Never again. After posting that, j got an email from xsellize(an iPhone site I used to be a part of 2-3 years ago), asking me to come post on the forums so they can have traffic. Lol.

I disabled all of the bloatware, as well as many of the Google stuff I do not use, and it made a world of difference in the overall performance of my device. Combine this with the task manager set to reclaim memory every 12 hours and I am good to go. My original lag issues are now gone.
I never reboot my device except when applying some sort of mod. It's never ever laggy.
I've also read that the Android development community strongly recommends not using any kind of task managing app. This is not Windows. Android is smart about managing it's memory on it's own.

LG provides a task manager widget that refreshes the memory. I wonder what issues that causes, if any.
I use it and I dig it.
Task Manager Widget, Then click the Circle Arrow and my RAM goes up.
My old HTC Vivid would go an 8 hour shift and need a charge, BAD! This OGP was at 80% battery with the same usage.

Fyi- The LG task manager clears memory by default every 12hrs.

I have only needed to reboot the phone when my iPad wont recognize the hotspot feature. Other than that i don't get lag or need to reboot. i do however CLEAR RAM if it drops below 800MB free. Just to stop running apps from draining my battery.

Just launch task manager from the app drawer...click on menu then settings..
The default options are to auto clear memory every 12hrs.. All of which can be changed.

dont think i've ever restarted it for being laggy. only when i try a new mod or occasionally after installing an app
341 hours ago.
I think the wifi was acting up so I rebooted two weeks ago.
I use the built in one. You can set the time frame for it to clear the ram for optimal performance. I have it set for every hour. No lag what so ever since I got this phone.
