[Q] Battery life in CM7 RC2 - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I usually fully charge my phone prior to going to bed and also have the habit of manually turning of data. Prior to updating to RC2 last night, I would be able to wake up to ~95% on the nightlies. Today, after flashing RC2, I woke up to only about 39%. Anyone else having this issue??

Yeah lol I'm getting horrible battery. I unplugged my phone at 8 this morning, and by 3:30 my battery was completely dead. All my radio's except for data was off, brightness at 100%, but I only used the phone maybe 30 minutes total, with no calls and only a dozen texts. This is on nightly 14.

I'm running #13 I keep getting maps running at random times. I just uninstalled maps. See how it goes...

You won't be getting true battery readings untill going through a few charging cycles and resetting battery stats. Search the forum for battery calibration, or resetting battery stats for some guides on getting the most out of your battery

Lol I've been a CM7 nightly user since the crackflashers build #7, so I know my stuff when it comes to nightlies. Battery life for me has been horrible on both RC2 and nightly 14, full charge cycle or whatever.
That "recalibarting" nonsense is nothing more than a myth that hurts your batteries longetivity. Lithium batteries should never be allowed to fully drain, even worse when done repeatedly. However, clearing battery stats at 100% full battery is beneficial.

You can also try flashing a different kernel. I use pershoot my self & get pretty good battery life with heavy use. I fully charged my phone 19 hrs & 42 min ago and am still @ 43 %.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App

I am lucky if I get 15 hours of battery life.
What is strange for me is that "Android system" accounts for such a large percentage of the battery (sometimes close to 50%). The phone was even in airplane mode for most of my work day.
I have tried stock & pershoot kernels, and different radios although now i am back to the T-mobile OTA radio (.26) all to no avail. I've been removing more and more apps to try and fix the problem.
My question: I saw running services for things like slacker radio, ebay, network monitor; but they did not show up in the battery use screen. Is it possible that these are all being clumped into the "Android system" category?
My display was on for 3+ hours but only accounts for 9%? Something doesn't seem right.
I have removed everything that has a running service in the background, so maybe today I will see an improvement.
Here's a screenshot from last night:

iv notticed that it takes longer to charge and battery dies out, but its still a release candidate i cant wait to have the final CM7

I run a timeout3g app that turns off the 3g after 10min, and last night I had a full charge and in the morning it was still in the 90's (93 I think), and I run CM7RC2 on my G2.
I have found that the timeout3g app works well.

Ok it looks like some of those apps I removed (ebay, network monitor, removed slacker widget from home screen) were indeed counting as "android system" in the battery use category. I removed several at once so unfortunately I don't know exactly which one it was. Android system now counts for about 2% of my battery life, and the battery life is much improved. Maps & Navigation still kill my battery, but I guess that's just a fact of life.

[Q] Odd Battery Charge Curve

hi all,
i noticed the charge curve on my evo is not linear. at first it's logarithmic and then linear (see pic). everything is off (3g/4g, wifi, bluetooth, sync) while charging (only turning on once in a while to check the %). is this normal?
ive wiped my battery stats and done all that. during use, the battery drops to 60% quickly and then discharges slower. im using deck's gb 1.3 rom, havent changed the kernel, no wake lock issues as far as i can tell.

I was having the same exact issue. I bought a new battery and figured it must be bad when it would jump from 80 percent to full in a matter of minutes. Then it would discharge to around 70 percent in a matter of an hour. After it hit 70 percent it would discharge more slowly. This was a battery that the Sprint store gave me and I was led to believe it was new. After it did this weird charging discharging issue I went back to sprint and this time received a brand new battery in the package. The young lady behind the counter showed me a box full of all types of used batteries and explained they probably pulled one out of the box of the used batteries. I exchanged my original battery because it wasn't fully charging anymore but the weird charging spike I got with the replacement battery was a first for me. Anyway the "NEW" battery is working like it should so you may be looking at a bad battery.
I know you said you wiped battery stats but did you calibrate the battery at all?
oop. forgot all about this post. thanks for your responses.
i assumed something weird may have happened from my going stock to root so i checked out a friends battery. he never rooted his phone. unfortunately i get the same charge curve.
yes, i have calibrated my battery/ ie, charge to full, wipe stats, then drain phone til shut off.
i will try contacting sprint/htc for a new battery and see how that goes.
anyone else have this issue?
Me, all the time. Have yet to have a different curve ever. Mine happens a little higher though, around 70%. Try battery monitor widget and you can see the actual charging voltage

After you drain the battery completely, charge it to 100% without unplugging. Recalibrate with that method and see if it helps.

Battery jumping

Good day everyone, I've been using CM9 for awhile now and its been an awesome ride so far. Everythings been working almost perfectly. Recently, my batteries(stock one) percentage level's been Jumping up and down...a lot. For instance, I woke up to it (while off) having 100% on the indicator, turned it on, and it dropped to 51%, re-booted it to see if that'd help but it dropped again to 12%. This kindof things been happening for awhile and still with Alpha 2. Should I just get a replacement from sprint? Or is there a workaround.
Also, Music's apparently been taking up to as much as 40% of my battery usage even though If don't even have it activated at the moment. I've tried deleting the apk but it appears com.android..., I may just be being a noob, but any help?

Apparently calibrating the battery according to some Android Engineer does nothing. The percentage you have left is directly related to the voltage of the battery. So if you are at 3.95 volts, that roughly corresponds to 50% with a range of 3.7 to 4.2 Volts on the battery. What the OP saw is the bbb...battery boot bug. If you are rebooting and you are lower than 70% do it while plugged into something. If it does happen as Biggie stated, simply remove the battery for a couple of minutes and reboot. It is a false report to the phone.
This has almost always been a issue for me when I flash anything new. It stays that way for until I deplete the battery, connect and leave connected til 100%, deplete the battery and follow the same process for about 3 full cycles and then all is well! Leaving battery out for a breather sometimes helps but I installed an app that has a widget and it keeps the regulating kinda monitered so I can be a little more at ease. Will post directly after this. But I also noticed that there have been times when the readout was a very low battery red [but I knew couldn't be true] and after I put it in airplane mode and didn't bother it for 5-10 minutes when I looked back again, battery would be yellow almost back to showing good and my battery stats show the levels increased. I think cm9 can't handle too much at one time anyways
Edit: that app I think is called battery info. Its pretty simple =) hope it helps! L8rz
Edit2: that app is listed in market as battery widget not battery info

Battery life + great battery monitoring application

I just got my Glide a few days ago. From the specs of the phone and reviews online I was expecting the battery to last very long, but that hasn't been my experience.
My battery was going down about 10% every hour which means I would barely make it through a work day without charging it again.
I found a great app called Battery Mix that tracks battery usage and estimates how long the battery is going to last. It shows a number called P/H (percent per hour) which tells you how many percent per hour the battery is going down (or up if you're charging). You can find the app here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.smapho.battery_mix
When I first installed the app I was getting about 12.5 P/H which means the phone will only last 8 hours. I then uninstalled a few apps that use battery, but that didn't help much. Somebody said their battery improved when they formatted their SD card, so I just removed the SD card from mine. Now my battery consumption is down to about 8 P/H. The best I've seen is 7 P/H. This is better but still would only get me 12 hours and I'm not running all the apps I would like to be running.
I have JuiceDefender running now on the balanced setting. I'm running the Osimood ROM with Android 2.3.5. I've removed all background network polling apps like Facebook. Android OS is using 56% of the battery followed by display at 15%, so there isn't anything else that's eating up my battery.
How is the battery life on your Glide? Could you please install this app so we can compare numbers?
Woah, 56% battery life for the Android OS?
On daily usage it barely gets above 20%. The screen takes most battery life.

Thanks for the info.
Mine has been sitting on standby most of the day so that's probably why display is so much lower on mine than yours.
The high percentage of Android OS doesn't really worry me. It doesn't mean it's using a lot of battery; it just means it's using most of whatever is being used which could be a small amount.
Mine is doing much better now. P/H is down to 4.3 which means it could last 23 hours.
I really think the problem was the SD card. I'll pick up a different one after work today and see if it works better. I need a bigger one anyway.
I also found a thread that talks about corrupt image or video files on your phone causing bad battery life. That could definitely be what I'm experiencing. Should be fun figuring out which image is causing the problem.
what about downclocikng your cpu to 800? it will help i belive.
OK just installed it. I will let you know how mine is doing in a few days. I am fully Rogers stock.
I replaced the SD card and it seems to be doing better now. There may have been images on that card contributing to the problem.
I actually had GPS, wi-fi and bluetooth on the whole time. I've turned them all off now.
I've also underclocked it to 800. Thanks, taiber2000.
It looks like for the last hour it only dropped 3 percentage points.
If you are rooted and have ClockworkMod installed, you can sometimes get better battery life by resetting your battery stats. I think there are even some apps for rooted phones that will do it, but I don't have any experience with them. I can say, however, that resetting my battery stats using CWM increased my battery life significantly.
See here for one guide on how to do it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/bugless/111009-get-better-battery-life-reset-battery-stats.html
sjbotha your welcome.
i belive i will do the same when i'll get my phone as well. altugh i will install the OC rooted kernel for better overall performance i will still downclock via software, not need the extra sterngh for my uses and i better have longer use time then CPU power.
I get 4.9 but the other day I was getting 12. All I did was Reboot my phone and I haven't started many apps. I think when they start they stay in memory.

Mine depends on usage:
-about whole day wifi-on with 3 hours games and calls; if battery is 100% at 6am, it will be 20-30% at 10pm
-whole day HSPA+ on, 2 hours phone calls + SMS/MMS, emails etc; if battery is 100 at 6am, it will be 50-60% at 11pm or before I sleep...
in terms of P/H:
-i get 3-5 P/H when wi-fi, Auto-Sync is on.
-i get 2-4 P/H on HSPA + Auto-Sync on.
-about 1-2 P/H or sometimes a straight line on Battery Stats when Idle, no data connection and/or auto-sync is on.
in other words, the glide can handle my needs in a whole day without completely draining it's battery.

[Q] Sharp and consistently high battery drainage

Hi, a few days after flashing ICS OrDroidX ROM from Android Revolution HD, I noticed that my phone battery starting to have sharp battery drop, for example after 30 minutes of off screen, it will drop from 97% to 92% based on the log from CurrentWidget. The current drain also extremely high, often stay between 300mA to 600 mA, rarely back to normal with 8mA draining in off screen.
I have done the wiping battery stats from the tutorial, and reflash CM10, however it get back to same battery drain though less severe than before, about 200mA drain on average, the sharp battery percentage drop still there.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can do, my phone is rooted, hence I would try to do anything I can before returning to HTC which I almost certain that they will charge me a lot for replacing a battery. Will battery overheating cause the issue as well? Thanks in advance!
I would say download betterbatterystats from the play store. It can give you information on what is active.

According to that graph, your phone hasn't been in deep sleep, ideally you would want to get a similar graph for Screen On and Awake. Go to -> partial wakelocks and give us a screenshot. Also, your signal doesn't seem very good. Do you usually get 1 bar?

Thanks a lot for the analysis! Yesterday I decided to reflash CM10 and remove all files from SD, and put them back after flashing. I get a similar graph as the previous graph that I posted.
After reflash
Partial wakelocks (because I did a reboot in between, so it shows only a short period of time, however during the screen on period of time, my battery have a awful sharp drop from 39 % to 29 %, a 10% drop in just a second...)
Shortly after I reflash the ROM and put my SD contents back into the phone, media scanner was a horrible process which hog on my CPU, after clearing the data from 'media storage', did several reboot then the phone only return to normal.
For the signal issue, my room never get full bar, normally would be stay around 2-3 out of 4 bar. Will this affect the battery life?
Now the problem seems like got two parts,
1. Screen off battery still drain quite a lot, though not as much as screen on
2. Screen on battery drain is awful, sometimes 5-10% in a just a second

why is my battery so bad all of a sudden?

Last night I went to bed at like 60% battery. I woke up today and my phone is completely dead. I slept for 5-6 hours and its hard to believe that my phone dead. I have NO idea how is this possible?
Here is a SS of my battery. I'm running AOKP(Jellybean 4.1.2)Task & Ktoonsez

You probably got a lot of calls/texts cuz ur screen probably turned on because of the fact its a whopping 49 percent
But the stats are only accounting for 51 minutes of up time, 49% screen usage at that uptime is not difficult to do.
What Rom are you running? Kernel? Did you recently download/install any new apps or games?
Generally this issue is caused by two things, 1) android system going beserk 2) a rogue app keep the phone from going into deep sleep.
Best thing to do is to fully charge it and then let it sit idle for a hour or two and then see what your stats report. Better battery stats is great for pin pointing causes for battery drain.
In the past, I have had a few games cause excessive battery drain as well as android system. The first was easy to remedy, install and reinstall worked 90% of the time while the other 10% required me to completely abandon said app.
Android system is a little trickier, always had to re flash the Rom to fix that, but thanks to data backup nandroid, that only takes a few minutes to backup data, flash Rom and then restore data... leaving me with my phone in the exact state that it was in before, , sans the battery drain.
Good luck bud
