I have looked on this site - and there seems to be some varied answers to this:
Which is better for battery life:
I prefer the look and feel of the HTC Mail app, but would prefer to get email as PUSH rather than setting an hourly sync.
Which is better on the battery? Gmail App or the HTC Mail via Exchange? or are they both the same?
I don't get very many emails a day - usually about 4 or 5 so having them arrive via PUSH seemed a better option? or again is this going to use more battery than just having the phone sync every hour?
Also - rather interesting - Why do the same emails appear differently when viewed in the HTC Mail App to the Gmail App. Some emails appear properly in the Gmail App, but the same email in the HTC Mail App shows nothing (even when it is set to HTML and have tried changing the size all the way to entire message)
Any suggestions, comments. Thanks.
You can use Exchange Activesync with GMail (the service, not the app!) to get mail "pushed" into HTC Mail.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks for the fast reply
I think I must not have been clear in my first post. When using the HTC Mail I have it set up using the Exchange and linking that to my GMail - is that what you mean when you say use Exchange Activesync with GMail?
If so, which, if any is better on battery. GMail application or the Activsync to HTC Mail?
Hope I have not just confused everyone.
Push should use more power than sync once an hour but you can run push on both the HTC Mail app with gmail and with the Gmail application.
I actually run both (Mail app for corporate Exchange server and Gmail for errr Gmail) and whilst clearly they affect battery life they are not a huge drain and a full day or sometimes a day and a half is easily done.
Thanks @MARK
How do you set up Push with the HTC Mail app with GMail? Originally when I set up my email I had the option (through the HTC Mail app) to have either POP3/IMAP or Exchange. The first time I set up via IMAP I could only sync via a time interval the PUSH option was not there. When I deleted the account and re-set up with Exchange I had the PUSH option.

You can access Gmail using Activsync so configure as per Exchange (which as you say, has the push option)
Your can find the settings on this page

(yes I know it's the WM page but the settings should be the same)
Just moved from WM (Diamond) to Droid and loving the desire so far, however there's 1 problem that drives me nuts.
I've setup my Desire to receive mail from yahoo, as well as a few other POP3 and IMAP email accounts I have, and while the phone does download emails according to schedule, all downloaded email are marked as UNREAD whether they are actually read or not.
This happens using the MAIL application that comes with the phone (I'd think it's a goggle app, not a HTC app), but also the K-9 Mail app.
This problem also happens on 2 different ROMs ... so it's not a ROM problem.
It's extremely annoying because I keep getting notifications of 'new' emails that I've already read!
This does not happen for gmail if I use the gmail app ... but gmail is not my primary email account.
I never had this problem in my WM days neither.
that is, because the mail app actully downloads new emails (via pop3) and doesnt know, if you already read the mails elsewhere.
Go to properties and change the protocol to IMAP. (and the according adresses and ports).
Hi everyone, lately after the OTA update of my Desire HD with Android 2.3.5 ( 3.13.707.4 ) i experience strange problems with the Mail application. The mail applications was setup before and now with my gmail accound, using ActiveSync. Before the update my mail was pushed well to say so, every time i received an email in seconds was on the phone.
Now, the settings in the Mail app are the same, push mail, but when i receive an email, even i see that the Mail client is syncing the mail will not appear, after several manual refresh the mail appears.
Another strange thing, during the day i don't receive the mail as was supposed to, although the mail is setup to push mail. If a let the phone alone and i do not check the mails manual, after 2-3 hours the client suddenly sync all the emails..
Dose anyone experience this problem?
P.S. i setup the Gmail program on my HTC and this is working well but i don't really like the program, i want to use Mail.
Thank you for being patient to read this...long post
Same Problem On DHD 3.12.405.8
Hy there,
it's been a while, since 3.0 Sense (1st Gingerbread update); even custom roms for our device or from other porting have this issue. I have stock www3.12.405.1
Now it seems to me i found a way out. Go to your google account on the web, and make sure pop3 is disabled in account settings.
Let me know if it works.
Bye.

Hello, ok now i disable the POP access from Gmail settings, today i will test to see if the mail behavior is ok and i will post the results.
Till now, after i disable tht POP access i test by sending an e'mail from another account and still no luck, the mail didn't come on my DHD, i will wait more and see if other mail are pushed on the device.
Thaks
This strange problem happened with me both in Gmail and Yahoo. I finally figured out the solution. Go to the account settings and manually change the settings. You will find that the mail application has added "htc" in the incoming server settings. Just delete "htc" and you will be good to go.
SO incoming settings for Gmail should be:
imap.gmail.com
NOT
htc.imap.gmail.com
This also applies to Yahoo mail if you use it, just remove "htc" from the server address.
Ok, but imap.google.com is for IMAP, i use exchange settings and in Mail application m.google.com
Ok, till now no change in the Mail behavior, still syncs whenever it wants apparently.
In Gmail settings POP3 is OFF and IMAP ON
Any one, any idea?
Strange thing....i observed that if i setup the default gmail application to sync mails the Mail app syncs to

Any ideas about this behavior?
yesterday i let the phone to sync only the exchange account and my mails were downloaded randomly, there were situations when the mail won't download even if i open the Mail app and refresh manual. I have to refresh for about 3-4 times for the mails to be sync....all without an error

I have the same issue. After coming out of airplane mode If I manually refresh for new mail across several exchange and pop accounts including GMAIL. It seems as if nothing happens for ages before it completes. However if you start the refresh, immediately cancel it and refresh again it works as it should...
Thanks! I will try this today and post the results

ActiveSync is not pop or imap... it's exchange.
Do not configure anything in your mail app or gmail app.
Go in Configuration->Account and sync->Add account.
Choose 'Enterprise' and fill this info of Exchange mail.
For ex:
\[email protected]
password
server=m.google.com
tic 'SSL'
then follow instruction, you're done (and leave auto/push for frequency)
All your mail will be in the default mail app.
those are exact my settings, today i delete the account and create another one, thinking that my be a problem because the account was created previously the OTA update.
THE PROBLEM...is annoying!!! In the first hours the mail came as it supposed to ( push mail ), around 2PM, after several hours of good time ( no relations, just as a fact ) the mail was, again, syncing but no mail.....that was strange, i click and open the Mail app, refresh manualy, no new mail......i check the gmail account on my computer and were several mails in the inbox. After that i click refresh in the Mail app and still nothing, i click the button for 3-4 times and the mails appears. WHY???
i wand my nokia 3310 back (
kidding....
hum... then I can't understand.
I have no idea if it's on your phone side or server side.
You have to compare... but not easy.
You have to find a way to isolate phone and server. If you have another phone, configure it to check. If you have the same effect with more than one device maybe it's on server side. You can also try to flash another ROM. I'm with ICS and it's working smoothly (4 exchange account and 1 IMAP).
Sorry to not be able to help more, never encounter this problem.
For me it's pushed with exchange, so the sending is manage by the server.
Make sure also that you're still connected to a network. Try browsing Internet.
Just ideas... good tricky question...
Thanks!
I tested out a few days ago, i configured the Gmail app from my HTC to sync the e-mails.....at the same time, the Mail app was configured as today. Surprise! when an e-mail arrived ( pushed ) in Gmail app arrived in Mail app as well
I thought that the problem was resolved and i disable the sync for the Gmail app leaving just the Maill to sync.....then you now all.....the mail arrives when my phone wants to )
Still an interesting thread
today i decided to do a factory defaults.....i erased everything and the SD too.
still the same problem, for the first mails arrived was ok...were pushed. after 15-20 min. the rest of the incoming mails no push, only after i have to do a manual refresh for 3-4 times
i will eat this phone!
Does this problem happen to you on Wifi and 3G? If it only happens on 3G then I think your network provider uses server caching. I have the same problem with my network and Whatsapp.
I tried both, 3g and wi fi....the same

Ok....i think i have the answer for this incredible behavior of this Mail app
Yesterday i was talking with a friend about this strange behavior and we start doing some random tests with different settings in the Mail app till we discover this:
The default settings of peak time start was 08:00 and peak time end 20:00
We change this to: peak time start 07:00 peak time end 6:59
now it's working well....i think it's a bug here because i use the peak time till the OTA update with this settings:
peak start 07:00 peak end 22:00 and i had no problem.
Thank you for your answers all !!!!
i think we can close this thread
Glad you figured it out
Now it's weekend....and my mail starts again.....my mails are pushed when the Maill app wants. Hope it's just for weekend.....

Been using K-9 Mobile since my first Android experince, but after sending the device for repair last week, I wanted to try the default Mail app since it has a nice integration inside contact's threads part.
Found an xda-thread about all push notifications not working well on One XL section but most of the people said it was fixed after late 2012 updates and also they had the PUSH option in sync settings but the difference is, I don't have. Also my other notifications work well, K9 still works well.
Only smart sync, 5mins 10mins.. etc. but no PUSH.
The mail is configured as IMAP all the ports are correct, neither the company mail nor the Gmail account works as expected. Gmail delivers in about 20mins, company mail takes much longer-sometimes 2hrs and still no mail. It updates when I open the mail app which is not something I'm used to do.

Done a lot search but yet if there is a solution and I failed to find, apologies.
Did try deleting the account and re-creating, didn't help.
G-mail app is disabled but haven't seen any effect of it.
Hi All,
I recently purchased a New Tmo LG G3. I've installed the latest Yahoo Mail Client from the Play Store. I recently noticed that mail notifications appears to not work as expected. Can someone help me verify if this issue is isolated to me of if this is a handset/app issue?
Issue: When user is sent mail to their Yahoo e-mail account, notification for new mail is not received.
Actual: Mail is received when performing manual sync. If user opens the Yahoo mail client, the mail will appear in the inbox.
Expected: Mail notification is received and user is made aware they have new mail awaiting to be read.
Repro Steps:
e-mail Yahoo account using another mail client
stay idle on the home screen and wait for notification
Additional notes: I verified that sync settings on Android is set to ON, I've also verified that sending mail from Gmail to Gmail, Comcast to GMail and Gmail to Comcast works as expected. I've also checked for reviews on the Play Store and noticed that their are 2-3 other people rated this app with 1 start stating it doesn't work.
If I could get a member or members on here test the Yahoo client it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I can keep my sanity if know this isn't isolated to me.
Thanks in advance!
Rebooting the phone appears to have resolved the issue.
