Hi everyone, lately after the OTA update of my Desire HD with Android 2.3.5 ( 3.13.707.4 ) i experience strange problems with the Mail application. The mail applications was setup before and now with my gmail accound, using ActiveSync. Before the update my mail was pushed well to say so, every time i received an email in seconds was on the phone.
Now, the settings in the Mail app are the same, push mail, but when i receive an email, even i see that the Mail client is syncing the mail will not appear, after several manual refresh the mail appears.
Another strange thing, during the day i don't receive the mail as was supposed to, although the mail is setup to push mail. If a let the phone alone and i do not check the mails manual, after 2-3 hours the client suddenly sync all the emails..
Dose anyone experience this problem?
P.S. i setup the Gmail program on my HTC and this is working well but i don't really like the program, i want to use Mail.
Thank you for being patient to read this...long post
Same Problem On DHD 3.12.405.8
Hy there,
it's been a while, since 3.0 Sense (1st Gingerbread update); even custom roms for our device or from other porting have this issue. I have stock www3.12.405.1
Now it seems to me i found a way out. Go to your google account on the web, and make sure pop3 is disabled in account settings.
Let me know if it works.
Bye.

Hello, ok now i disable the POP access from Gmail settings, today i will test to see if the mail behavior is ok and i will post the results.
Till now, after i disable tht POP access i test by sending an e'mail from another account and still no luck, the mail didn't come on my DHD, i will wait more and see if other mail are pushed on the device.
Thaks
This strange problem happened with me both in Gmail and Yahoo. I finally figured out the solution. Go to the account settings and manually change the settings. You will find that the mail application has added "htc" in the incoming server settings. Just delete "htc" and you will be good to go.
SO incoming settings for Gmail should be:
imap.gmail.com
NOT
htc.imap.gmail.com
This also applies to Yahoo mail if you use it, just remove "htc" from the server address.
Ok, but imap.google.com is for IMAP, i use exchange settings and in Mail application m.google.com
Ok, till now no change in the Mail behavior, still syncs whenever it wants apparently.
In Gmail settings POP3 is OFF and IMAP ON
Any one, any idea?
Strange thing....i observed that if i setup the default gmail application to sync mails the Mail app syncs to

Any ideas about this behavior?
yesterday i let the phone to sync only the exchange account and my mails were downloaded randomly, there were situations when the mail won't download even if i open the Mail app and refresh manual. I have to refresh for about 3-4 times for the mails to be sync....all without an error

I have the same issue. After coming out of airplane mode If I manually refresh for new mail across several exchange and pop accounts including GMAIL. It seems as if nothing happens for ages before it completes. However if you start the refresh, immediately cancel it and refresh again it works as it should...
Thanks! I will try this today and post the results

ActiveSync is not pop or imap... it's exchange.
Do not configure anything in your mail app or gmail app.
Go in Configuration->Account and sync->Add account.
Choose 'Enterprise' and fill this info of Exchange mail.
For ex:
\[email protected]
password
server=m.google.com
tic 'SSL'
then follow instruction, you're done (and leave auto/push for frequency)
All your mail will be in the default mail app.
those are exact my settings, today i delete the account and create another one, thinking that my be a problem because the account was created previously the OTA update.
THE PROBLEM...is annoying!!! In the first hours the mail came as it supposed to ( push mail ), around 2PM, after several hours of good time ( no relations, just as a fact ) the mail was, again, syncing but no mail.....that was strange, i click and open the Mail app, refresh manualy, no new mail......i check the gmail account on my computer and were several mails in the inbox. After that i click refresh in the Mail app and still nothing, i click the button for 3-4 times and the mails appears. WHY???
i wand my nokia 3310 back (
kidding....
hum... then I can't understand.
I have no idea if it's on your phone side or server side.
You have to compare... but not easy.
You have to find a way to isolate phone and server. If you have another phone, configure it to check. If you have the same effect with more than one device maybe it's on server side. You can also try to flash another ROM. I'm with ICS and it's working smoothly (4 exchange account and 1 IMAP).
Sorry to not be able to help more, never encounter this problem.
For me it's pushed with exchange, so the sending is manage by the server.
Make sure also that you're still connected to a network. Try browsing Internet.
Just ideas... good tricky question...
Thanks!
I tested out a few days ago, i configured the Gmail app from my HTC to sync the e-mails.....at the same time, the Mail app was configured as today. Surprise! when an e-mail arrived ( pushed ) in Gmail app arrived in Mail app as well
I thought that the problem was resolved and i disable the sync for the Gmail app leaving just the Maill to sync.....then you now all.....the mail arrives when my phone wants to )
Still an interesting thread
today i decided to do a factory defaults.....i erased everything and the SD too.
still the same problem, for the first mails arrived was ok...were pushed. after 15-20 min. the rest of the incoming mails no push, only after i have to do a manual refresh for 3-4 times
i will eat this phone!
Does this problem happen to you on Wifi and 3G? If it only happens on 3G then I think your network provider uses server caching. I have the same problem with my network and Whatsapp.
I tried both, 3g and wi fi....the same

Ok....i think i have the answer for this incredible behavior of this Mail app
Yesterday i was talking with a friend about this strange behavior and we start doing some random tests with different settings in the Mail app till we discover this:
The default settings of peak time start was 08:00 and peak time end 20:00
We change this to: peak time start 07:00 peak time end 6:59
now it's working well....i think it's a bug here because i use the peak time till the OTA update with this settings:
peak start 07:00 peak end 22:00 and i had no problem.
Thank you for your answers all !!!!
i think we can close this thread
Glad you figured it out
Now it's weekend....and my mail starts again.....my mails are pushed when the Maill app wants. Hope it's just for weekend.....

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help.
I recently bought a HTC Desire and I'm loving it except for a big problem with my IMAP email account.
Everything worked perfectly for the first day. However the next morning I noticed I hadn't received any emails. I ended up deleting the account and starting again. No joy.. I ended up hard resetting the device and setting all back up. This time the only mail I received was what it hadn't received prior to resetting.
Now after numerous resets and support phone calls the device receives absolutely nothing yet it will send no problem. I have another account which works fine. Also the email account works fine on all other devices.
I understand the obvious question is whether I've configured the device correctly. Trust me I have.
Please can anyone suggest anything? It's almost like the Desire has cached something about my email account despite the data wipes..?
Many thanks in advance!
David
Just the same issue - "no mails"...
IMAP works perfectly here. I have one Exchange ActiveSync account and one IMAP account.
My IMAP gmail account is working perfectly here too. But I did had problem getting email notification to appear on the status bar which I manage to resolved.
I tried the imap but went back to just the gmail app as the gmail app had the emails come through much faster. I didn't find the imap and gmail worked well at all.
Tried an alternative mail client like K-9?
I'm using K-9 but I don't like it. I haven't yet found anything else that does push with IMAP though. K-9 doesn't work in the same way as other email apps for POP, which I use for another account. In fact it's unusable for me for POP on Gmail as it deletes msgs as soon as they arrive (they are not being deleted from server).

Same problem over here with IMAP failing to retrieve new emails after a certain point. I think the built in client is having difficulty with some messages - if I use another mail client to delete the next email (after the Desire stopped receiving new mail), receiving springs back into life.
I'm going to take a closer look at this. My best guess is that the HTC email client has an obscure bug relating to a mis-implementation of the IMAP protocol. For all sorts of reasons, I'd like to get the HTC client working! Perhaps there's a workaround we can implement until a bug fix is released.
In short, definitely a bug.
I agree, there is definitely a bug in there - more than one. I think I'm going to be forced to go back to good old pop3 for emails on the Desire. Even then though, the HTC mail app doesn't do push. Maybe k9 will work better with pop3 than it does with IMAP. Although neither k9 or the gmail app copy and paste do they? So I don't know what is going to be best.

I have a de-branded Orange Desire and I applied the OTA update with a goldcard in. Everything seems to be working ok except for push email.
I have tried deleting all the stored details (cache etc) of google mail, HTC mail etc which is recommended when others have had problems with push email.
So anyone else noticed any issues? Is there a problem with gmail which happens to have co-incided with when I did the update or is this a problem with the update?
OK I have done some more playing and I am fairly sure that update has broken this.
on 1.15 I was getting push notifications from my gmail account (I think anyway...) in the HTC mail app. Now I am not
I have just re-enabled notifications in the google mail app and this now pops up as soon as I send a message from my PC. No matter what I do the HTC app does not seem to want to play.
Even when set to sync every 15 minutes this did not seem to want to pick up any email (it did work sometimes but not consistently).
I much prefer the HTC mail app (and widget) to the google one but as it stands I can only get notifications from google. I did think I could just leave google app for notifications and mail app for checking but the google notifications do not get cleared when you open HTC app which is a tad annoying.
Anyone else suffering from similar issues or have some ideas about what the best solution might be?
I had the same problem. I am on a debranded and updated rom but using the Orange network.
I found that my email was not being pulled down from two POP accounts. Everytime I adjusted settings I recieved messages about not connected to server etc or host cannot be found etc.
about 24 hours later it all works great... emails come in properly and I can send. It might be worth setting it up. checking that you have a network connection to Orange and that you have set your auto download times. Then leave it to get on with it for a while.
GMail has continued to push mail to my phone fine since the update, however my other two email accounts (one IMAP and one Exchange ActiveSync) which are polled often stop sync'ing until I do it manually. The same also appears to be true of my other sync accounts... Facebook and Twitter. I haven't been able to work out what causes them to stop sync'ing, and what later then enables them to randomly start sync'ing again. It's annoying, it makes sync and notifications for these services totally worthless because you can't just assume it's working, you always have to manually check.
Another way in which HTC has let itself down with poor s/w quality, IMHO
No problems for me here in my debranded Orange black Desire

Gmail still working fine, FB and Twitter (official app) both update as expected every hour...don't use any other email as my phone is setup for my DJ work
I'm getting the same issue, GMail is fine but push email through Exchange isn't happening.
Presumably it's one of the reasons TMobile has now pulled the update. Hopefully a fix will be out soon
Wanted to check if anyone is having problems with the stock HTC MAIL APP after Froyo OTA Update.
I use my Desire for work emailing and usually download my emails to both my Desire and notebook. I'm aware of the previous bug in 2.1 where emails get deleted of the mail server if they are deleted from the phone.
After the OTA update, I am still able to download emails to both my Desire and notebook, but if I "refresh / check for new mail" HTC Mail deletes all previously downloaded emails in my inbox.
I tried K-9 Mail and the same thing happens!
Is there a setting that I'm missing? Appreciate any help!
I was having the same issue, but have resolved it by changing my account settings from POP3 to IMAP.
Hope this helps...

Thanks, but changing to IMAP (server port 143) didn't help.
Same thing happens. Any other suggestions?
Called the Australian arm of HTC Customer Service and surprisingly got a call back in about an hour. They did some "tests" and now acknowledge the problem and promised to call me back in a few days with a solution. Fingers crossed!
Will post results if successful for others with this problem.
Mail missing
Hi
Having the same problem and changing to IMAP did not help.
This is wery iritating.

Someone from another thread suggested a workaround by setting your native client (outlook) to NOT delete emails from the mail server after it has been downloaded.
This wont' work for me as I have size restrictions on my account.
I've just been forwarding the emails to myself and the emails get stored in my SENT folder. Irritating, I know, but at least I have a copy of it on my phone.
smpt change smtp
"smpt change smtp"
I'm not sure what you mean, could you please elaborate! Thanks.
Any fix on this yet...driving me crazy.
This sucks, I even flashed a rom from Modaco that's totally stock except it has root, did a wipe before and still have the same thing.

After the Froyo update my HTC Mail app can't connnect to my google e-mail, using IMAP. I can still use my dedicated Gmail app for this, it's only the HTC mail app that will not connect.
Spoke with HTC Customer Service earlier, supposedly they're working on a patch to get the mail app working properly. Unfortunately, no indication of when!
I posted this in another thread:
Crap. I have the exact same problem. As soon as you download to your pc from the server the emails are gone. No solution yet? There is a workaround you can go to your native client (outlook) go to advanced setting and check "leave emails on server". Until this is fixed this is all we can do.
Here is a brief tutorial for Outlook 2003:
Under the Delivery section of the Advanced tab, Outlook 2003 lets you define how to handle downloaded and old emails on the mail server.
By default, Outlook 2003 downloads your emails from the server, and in effect deletes them from the server after successful downloads. Without needing access to the mail server itself, you can customize Outlook's email deletion behavior. Outlook 2003 gives you thee options.
Checking the Leave a copy of messages on the server checkbox instructs Outlook 2003 to leave a copy of your emails on the server indefinitely. You or your System Administrator will then need to delete the emails from the mail server itself.
Complementary options can refine how long, and under what conditions Outlook 2003 should leave a copy of your emails on the mail server; I have mine set to 30 days.
Hmmm...this must not be a very common problem at all. I seached a ton of threads and can't fine any complaints about this. Why the hell is this happening only two a few of us i have no clue???
Wiped data/cache before both rom installs.
Just wiped data/cache/ext and re-installed the third different (1 bone stock rom, 1 stock with ap2sd, one cyanogen fully custom) custom rom. Same problem as before. I've not given up and will hope for a fix in the next update from HTC or a patch.
I've done the same. Tried a few different ROMs and all have the same issue of deleting my INBOX.
I've reverted back to 2.1, pity as I was getting used to 2.2. Can't work without properly functioning mail app.
Will post a solution if and when it is finally available.

Hey, I'm also having some problems with Hotmail being setup as Exchange Activesync account.
I have found that it will not sync all emails, will not sync all folders and as soon as I delete an email it will automatically resync and re-download the deleted messages.
ARHD 5.2.2
Hi,
I'm also finding this EXACT problem! It's definitely something to do with the HTC mail app if that is what you two are using?
I did read somewhere that it's caused by the way the app syncs mails - from what I could deduce it logs on each time (or possibly at random, I'm not 100% sure) and this is seen as a threat by the Hotmail EAS system which then temporarily locks access to your account using Activesync!
I tested this theory by creating a new account, and configuring Improved Email (free on Market, by "mtwebster") and the account sync'd all day long. I then left my normal account for 24hrs, still locked, with Imp. Mail reporting "Connection Error". Tried again another 24hrs later using the non-HTC app and it sync'd fine too!
I then discovered the mic was busted and had to pick up a swap today...same issue with my Hotmail now, using the HTC Mail app!
My work EAS account sync's all day long without kicking up ANY fuss whatsoever!
Hotfail rides again...
Hope this helps,
Karl

Am I the only one who's disenchanted with the Gmail app on Android? I was hoping it would be better with my Nexus, but nothing has changed.
It doesn't seem like true push. If I set Gmail up as an exchange account in the mail app, it receives my e-mail and notifies me within seconds of sending a test message. The Gmail app randomly notifies me within about 15 minutes or so. Call me anal, but I like to receive my e-mail as soon as possible (sometimes it's important) and I don't see why there's a delay on the official Gmail app.
I know this has been an ongoing issue for some time with Android and my co-worker claims that he's perfectly happy just using the Gmail app, but my experience is that the Email client receives e-mail faster and that's important to me.
I've been using the gmail app for a while on 4 different devices (N1,G2,Sensation,GNex), and I've never noticed more than a couple second lag receiving emails. I have noticed something since 4.0.4 or possibly the latest gmail update. When I mark an email as read on my computer, the notification no longer clears itself on my phone. I have to manually clear it.
It can be strange, and in some cases frustrating. More often than not, my emails come really quick (as they should). There has been a few occurances where an email was delayed by several hours.
And it does seem as though the mail app works better than the gmail app for push email.
Edit: I only use the gmail app, but have used the mail app in the past.
Never had more than a 30 second delay personally.
See, my co-worker swears he doesn't notice a delay either, but I have tested it over and over. When I have notifications on for both the default e-mail client and Gmail, I will get a notification immediately from the e-mail client and nothing from Gmail. More troubling, when I open Gmail, the e-mail is not there yet. It's like it's on periodic check, instead of push.
Currently, I have notifications turned off for the Gmail app and use it to sync everything, then have Gmail set up as an exchange account and only have it pulling in e-mail (no contacts or calendar). It still seems a tad redundant, but its' the only way to ensure that I get my e-mail reliably.
I've not noticed any delay with using the app.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
No delays here either. I relay email from POP3 accounts to Gmail for the push functionality and it works flawlessly.
All good here too. Matches my desktop Gmail timing. Btw I love the Gmail app its the best damn email experience I've ever seen on a phone, I use it constantly.
I can't be the only one having this issue. Is it possible that no one here knows any different simply because they haven't tried it as an exchange account through the regular e-mail app? Again, I have had this issue on pretty much every Android phone I have owned. And I can duplicate it any time.
Would anyone care to add Gmail as an Exchange account through the e-mail app and then send themselves a test message? Let me know if you get it in both apps around the same time. In my case, it shows up instantly in the e-mail app and won't show up for several minutes in the Gmail app unless I push the sync button manually.
i've noticed delays too. really frustrating because i have no idea what can be done about it...

Nothing that I know of, because it only seems to affect a small percentage of users. I can find a few posts on the internet with other users complaining about the same issue, but most people who reply say they have no problem (just like this post). It makes me wonder if I created a completely new Gmail account and tied it to my phone, if I'd get e-mail instantly on that account.
Unfortunately, that's not an option. I've had this address for years.
How long is your delay, less than a minute? I send myself a test email from my corp work email and it comes thru in less than a minute.

The delay varies. Sometimes it's instant, other times it's anywhere from a 5-15 minute delay. I always get the e-mails instantly in the e-mail app when Gmail is set up as an exchange account.
The moral of the story is, it's not reliable. I can never count on getting my e-mail in a timely manner in the Gmail app.
Sign in to the Google Talk application and make sure you're always signed in. I believe that the gTalk-connection is used for push-messages, so if you're signed in into gTalk, push should work.
I also had the delay once, after I restored a backup of the gmail data after a factory reset(actually, yakjuxw -> yakju). I deleted the gmail data and re-configured it. That fixed the problem for me.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I have the gmail issue (won't ever recieve push email...have to manually sync) AND I cannot sign into GTalk from my phone.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but was there ever a resolution to this? I'm having the exact same problem on my HTC One X (AT&T).
Gmail or Gtalk delays are due to router (firewall issues). Just forward the necessary Google ports, and you'll be good to go.
