[Q] N64oid on the EVO? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried the n64oid app on their EVO? And if so how well does it preform? I am wanting to know before I buy the app.
Thanks!
-Mitch

Runs fine for me.....

Runs fine for me, just a lil sound lag, but its expected.

Decent for me on LOZ:OOT. Bit laggy though.

Ive used it, but quite laggy on the game i was playing, Diddy Kong Racing. It will get better tho

I just downloaded it, and EVERY rom i've downloaded on the EVO for n64oid is Super laggy, unplayable. Anyone know why?

ive had the same problem on my evo, except for mario 64 and harvest moon 64, but otherwise all the other roms are so laggy i can barely play them, even though some of the same roms i've seen youtube videos of them running perfectly. same question as above; anybody know why?

is there the option of changing the framerate? the higher the frame rate, the smoother the game, but it takes a heavy toll on your battery, you'll be best to play while tethered to the wall via charger cable

I just bought this app as well. Downloaded Goldeneye, Mario, and Mario Kart. All games are extremely laggy. Mario kart is playable, but the on screen timer takes about 3 seconds for every second in real time. Goldeneye, which I was really looking forward to, wont even load past the pre-game animated video. Very disappointing.

I changed the frame rate in mario kart, it worked okay, but still really laggy. Goldeneye and NFL Blitz were terrible no matter what the framerate!! I thought EVOs were fast?!!! What's going on?

Our processors are fast, our GPUs are outdated though. All the cool people run Adreno 205, we're stuck at 200.
Plus, as someone noted, it'll get better. There's a lot of stuff for the developer to work out to make the programming as efficient as possible so we don't experience so much lag. If you recall, it took the guy who did SNESoid several months before he could even get Super Mario RPG to work, and even so there's still enhancements being made to make it more playable.
patience...or buy a phone with better hardware. your choice.

Its not our phone, the dev clearly states at the bottom that the app should be considered an Alpha as he has so many performance updates to push thru to get it working close to perfect on most high end phones. Just give it time.

Yes, the results posted here are actually typical of most phones right now. The Evo does have a slightly lower GPU, but that actually doesn't matter with these emulators. Someone explained that unless the emulator was using openGL, which it apparently isn't, it shouldn't matter. I don't know, I just read that.
I have tested it on two roms. Myns 2.2 RSL5, and UltimateDroid 2.5. Both with kernels that support overclocking. On the sense rom, I have to download setcpu and set it to performance. On UD, I can set it in the settings. I overclock to 1.19GHZ.
In the app I have found it doesn't really matter if sound is checked on or off. Turning up the frameskips seemed to help. My results so far are the following games play well:
Mario 64 (flawless)
Mario Kart 64 (just a little bit laggy, but very enjoyable)
Star Fox 64 (menus and videos are very choppy, but in game it's super smooth and definately worth the download)
If for nothing more than these 3 games, this was well worth $6. I would have gladly bought these for $2 each if there were available as standalones somewhere.
That being said, the developer is known for updating all the time. Star Fox is running much more smoothly now than it was when the app first was released, so already I have seen a compatibilty increase.
Expect to continue to see updates, and as they do, more games will be available.
Now, if ANYONE has some complaint about the $6 they paid, go complain somewhere else. We don't want to hear it.

Runs like bunk on the evo because of the adreno 200.
Just ran it on an epic and it works perfect with the almighty powervr. (although the rest of the phone sucks)

It has potential so I bought it. I just want to play Zelda and Mario Kart. I can't wait until the Dreamcast emulator comes out so I can play Shenmue.

if you install CM7 and over clock to 1.1ghz it runs a lot better.

Gaming problems

So, I have the same problem that others have reported, several of my games just stop working after playing them for awhile. I'll get so far in the game and then the game just shuts down and goes back to the home screen. A couple examples of the games that do this are Pocket Legends and Muffin Knight.
I am rooted. I was wondering if flashing a custom rom helps at all. So far I am rooted, but stock. I guess I haven't figured out exactly what is causing the problem though I know it's a known problem with the S2.
I am curious myself. It feels like I'll never beat Plants vs. Zombies because of it.
As far as I know it's a sound issue with the E4GT in general even rooting will not help the problem. Atleast I don't remember seeing anyone saying the games we do know of that are crashing are now working without a crash on a rooted rom.
Play with the sounds and/or music off.

Tried that with Plants vs. Zombies it does not work still crashes after a few minutes of play time.
The biggest thing I've noticed was that the phone will heat up quite a bit during game playing.
I've found that underclocking the device down to 800mhz and using the conservative governor I'm able to play longer, but the phone still becomes incredibly warm.
I've been having this issue since day one. Its really aggravating.

It has something to do w/ the soundpool bug that's causing the crash. It's been happening on the Int GS2 and Samsung still haven't fixed it. Turning off sounds doesn't fix the issue either. You can read bout it here http://groups.google.com/group/andr...hread/a40bf951f420b47e/6b736dba33793e00?pli=1
I've never had a problem with just headphones, n64 emulator, and starfox at 1.6GHz for hours.

N64oid isn't affected by this. But nearly every other game is.
Thanks everyone. When i'm on the desktop I'll hit the official thanks button.
I don't use the emulators. I did try playing with the sound off, but no joy. I'll try underclocking just for fun.
I contacted Samsung and they keep singing the song that it's the developers fault.

Just a FYI, PopCap did an awful hack job porting their games to Android, so I wouldn't use Plants vs Zombies as a baseline. In their case it's highly likely it's the developer's fault. Can't speak for any other games / developers, though I've had zero issues with playing Cut the Rope for 1+ hours.

I agree they did do a mediocre job but that point isn't valid. These same games play very well on other Android phones. My G2 had no issues running them but my wifes E4GT freezes all the time playing certain games.
On another note, I find it odd that the issue has something to do with the sound on these phones. Top of the line mobile GPU and we are trumped by a sound bug...

I guess I shouldn't *****, I haven't had any problems with LOS or GPS, but I do game a fair amount and it's annoying. The screen for camera and gaming is why I wanted this phone the most.

I played Plants vs Zombies through to the end on my Evo3D and the game never crashed one time.
Plants vs. zombies is the only game that crashes on my phone. Unfortunately, it crashes so regularly as to be unplayable.

N64oid crashes consistently for me. Usually playing the Zelda games. Anyone with N64oid emulator experience frequent crashes?
I've been playing Chrono Trigger on the Snes9x emulator and it crashes on me the same way Plants vs. Zombies do.

Disappointed in the GPU...

Can't even play dungeon defender second wave, choppy once u get into a battle.
Thing is at 42C and the top portion of the phone is uncomfortably hot to touch.
I knew the hardware wasn't bleeding edge but didn't expect the phone to be this ****ty.
It just barely runs that game better than my previous Motorola Triumph overclock'd to 1.5ghz
how do u know it's not dungeon defenders not being optimized for ICS?
It's definitely because of the new software dude. The GNex can run Shadowgun without any hiccups, I'm sure it can run anything else when the apps are properly optimized.
Not properly optimized, bro.

That's because Dungeon Defenders is heavily optimized for the TEGRA2 platform, and has been modified for everything else since release. It's been modified to work with a majority of the GPUs on the market right now, but new devices demand more modification. It's the way the game was designed.
What this means is that soon they'll update it to work well with the Nexus. Just give it time.
Just return it and get, well, something better?
Or wait on app devs to update their stuff for ICS?
The hardware is just fine. It's poor app coding that's slowing you down.
Shadowgun runs fine, its one of the most graphically intensive games we have on Android.
LOL
I'm running a GTX 570.
No issues here
Dungeon Defender is working fine on my GNexus, with the graphics setting bar set all the way to full, what rom/kernel are you using?

It's 100% stock.
And yeah I suppose I need to wait for an ICS version before I pass judgement, just frustrated I can't play it.
Not optimized + maybe u just expirience some high latency(if it is a online game, i dont know)
only played a quick game, but seemed fluid..

Do you have force hardware acceleration under developer options checked?

Why is Let's Golf 3 so freaking laggy?

I like this game but I always have to put up with crappy framerate, lag spikes and unresponsive controls sometimes too.
Today the game was running much worse than usual, so I decided to watch some youtube videos to see if the game runs so bad on other devices too, and from the videos I watched, it seems the game runs perfectly on the Xperia Play and on the Xperia Mini too.
What could be the reason for this crazy laggyness on this device? Ok, the game is playable but honestly, it runs like ****.
I think there is something wrong with certain apps in the market, it downloads an apk that's totally unoptimized for this device, and I noticed the same thing happening with another Gameloft game, Asphalt 6, the version I bought from the market ran like complete and utter **** and was unplayable, then I installed a random cracked one I found with google, and not only it looked better (with reflection on the car and everything), it also ran 100% smooth. I still haven't bothered to ask for a refund (I don't know if it's even possible, but anyway I don't really care for .79€ that much) since the downloaded version runs perfectly, I'll just keep that one.
What do you think is wrong with this stuff?
Please tell us what firmware, rom and kernel are you using?
These details are required to sort out every problem!

N64 Emulator Lag

Hey all! I just got my S3 last week and it's my first Android phone. I'm trying to run an N64 emulator (Mupen64Plus) and it's pretty laggy, especially when sound is enabled. I've seen and posts about users running N64 games just fine on their S3's, so I'm not sure what the issue is. If anyone has any suggestions for getting my phone to play N64 games smoothly, I'm all ears. Btw, I haven't rooted or done anything fancy and don't plan to in the near future.
Some info: I ran the Quadrant Standard benchmark and got 5392. Generally, I'm using about 750/1560 MB or RAM (before running the emulator). I've run a process monitor that says nothing else is taking more than 2% of the cpu, except for the "System," which takes <10%. In all, it looks like not much is bogging the system down, so I'm really not sure why this app is having trouble. Are there other comparable high-end android games I should test my phone against? Thanks, guys.

An S3 and the T999 have completely different hardware specs. Its uses the same screen, battery, and case, but thats about it. The S3 has a quad core, we have a dual core. Try another n64 app or a different site for getting rome. Also, make sure you place your roms on internal storage, if you're running a lower class SD Card.
This sounds like an app problem. ..try using a different emulator. Mess with the settings even. My emulator runs fine
You're asking a tiny handheld device that is designed to be a PHONE to do the things a device designed to be GAMING CONSOLE to do.
I'm just saying....
There may be other emulators that will do better on your particular phone.
It's not an alien spaceship you know.
Im pretty sure the only app that doesnt lag is N64oid try that. Runs perfectly for me

[Q] Are there differences between Android Market & Gameloft Games - MC4 / Nova 3?

As title states. I have purchased some time ago from the Android Market Modern Combat 4 an Nova 3. MC4 is a bit laggy even when I temporarily overclock from 1.2 to 1.5 (which I really dont want to do) and its a bit better but still lags.
Same conditions for Nova 3 as above. I read somewhere that the Wapshop versions are not as bad.. is this true? Can someone let me know? I am also aware that the apps could probably run better if GL optimized them better, but they wont.
Side note, to me MC4 looks the same as MC3 graphics wise, well for the most part there are some areas where I do see a bit of a difference but should that difference really make that much of a notice on our phones performance? Could it be the fact MC4 uses the Havok engine...... I mean for me MC3 just flies like a cube of hot butter down a San Francisco side in the summer. (does that make sense......)
Anyways I woudl appreciate any inpout from users who have played and or are using the wapshop and the Market versions...
For MC4, the wapshop version does not lag when the gamepad is out. But u still need wifi on for best performance.
I dont know about NOVA 3 though.
You'll need a good connection
If your playing online with the Carrier network, there might be some lag and some connection issues. Using a good wifi connection is better online but some times its going to be the host your connected to, with the bad connection Also if you play while your device is charging, the battery heats up quickly which can also give a poor performance. BTW if its single player thats lagging, its probably cause your device ran out of memory/RAM -apps like task killer and memory booster can help with that. I noticed N.O.V.A 3 was just naturaly laggy on multiplayer though :/
Almost forgot

Both market and gameloft site versions is the exact same thing since both files you download are identical, though you can get special offers/promotions in a purchase from gameloft and/or the market. Hope i helped!
Mc4, If u have played on another device looks spectacular, GL "Optimized" our device by adding controls and by Reducing the texture quality which is making the game look like A childs puzzle put together (the squary textures) , this speeds up the game alot because the device can handle the texture quality like that,
