[Q] Camera Fix not working for me. - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried the camera fix posted here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970452
I used Odin, all I get after it finishes is my phone sits on a blank screen with Samsung written on it. It never finishes booting.
Before I tried running the camera fix kernal, I used
Stock EB13 Deodexed EXT4 + CW 3.0.0.6 listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209 posted by art3mis-nyc.
It worked fine, except for the lag when rotating phone, (known issue, I was able to fix using the fix posted on the forums) and the video lag.
So I am guessing that the EB13 that I am running isn't compatible with the camera kernal update?
So...my question is, is there a patch I can get to fix that, or do I need to install a different mod? So far, I have only updated my phone via modem, and not through clockwork(which means I have more reading to do, if that is the direction I must take)
Thanks guys.

Try the Genocide 0.3a kernel. Should work perfect.

Works flawlessly for me.

Ok. On that note, the eb13 I installed says it is prerooted and has clockwork installed. How do I findclockwork to then install the Genocide? I am watching a youtube on how to use clockwork, but apparently I have no icon for it, and I tried the (hold volume down, camera button and power button at same time) and nothing happened.
I am at a loss.

1. Download the Genocide kernel .zip and copy it to your SD card.
2. Power the phone off.
3. Once completely shut down hold vol down, camera and power until you see the clockwork mod menu
4. Choose install zip from SD card and choose the kernel zip you downloaded.
5. When it says completed (after the screen flickers once or twice) choose reboot and you should be good to go.

Will I need to install a custom ROM too, or can I stick with my stock EB13?

Thanks insanity, and other posters.
I finally figured out how to get into clockwork. But the 5 minutes between posts wouldn't let me state that.
I was going to use the "trulyEpic which is about 130mb, and the genocide one I downloaded is like 8mb. Is it supposed to be so small?

I do believe the kernel works with stock eb13 as well. Give it a shot! Thats what development is all about.
And yes, around 8mb sounds about right for the kernel size.

Yes its that small. The rom includes everything for your phone. All the system stuff. That's why its so big of a file the kernel is just that so when u flash the rom u have to flash the kernel afther the rom is installed

Ok. Got ya, so since I had an eb13 rom, just flashing the genocide kernal over it, made basically the few changes he listed including the camera fix. BTW, flashed it, and camera is fixed. Big thanks to everyone.

I have Midnight ROM v4.0 on my sd card and was wondering if all I have to do now is boot into CW3 and flash the rom. I've tried installing roms before and failing so I'm asking for help now.
Thanks in advance.
You got the hard part done.
Turn off device
3finger into CM3...toggle down to install zip from sd.. push camera button for yes then choose zip from sd...push camera button for yes select midnight rom push camera button for yes and install. Takes along time to install and boot the first time dont freak and make sure you read midnights install instructions
If you want the full rom, be sure to install the second .zip in the midNIGHT extras folder on your sd card.

Oh really. good to know. I also sere there is a v4.1. Do I have to install that as well?
yes you need to flash 4.1 after 4.0 and also flash files you want from midnight extras folder. Maybe you can try the syndicate rom frozen loaded edition for your first rom its a one shot flash, very simple.
I will have to check out out. From what I've read and seen midnight rom is the one I want to use though.
Thanks for all the help !

midNight is totally worth an extra few zip flashes!!
So I flashed both 4.0 and 4.1 and now I'm getting an error that is force closing everything. What now?
Edit:
I believe this is the part where I go and flash in the extras to get stuff working. am I right?

Hmmm. So I got a phone call today from my step grandparents today and ignored it. Then for some reason my phone restarted itself 2 or 3 times. Did I forget to install something?
Possibly, what did you install from the extras folder? I just do the standard edition update and delete what I don't want. That will give you everything but sprint bloat.

[Q] Questions about SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0

Sorry for the stupid questions but please bear with me...
First of all i have my epic with an deoxeded eb13/ rfs/ with genocide kernel and i want to put SyndicateROM Frozen 1.0 on my epic.
However i have a few questions:
1) right now i have an epic with clockwork 2.5.1 i think and rooted it with
oneclick 2.5.5, so i dont have ext4... so i was wondering if i could still flash
this rom without much problems
2) i heard that there is a nasty bug that wont let you charge your phone while
it is off with some phones with clockwork 3.0.0.6 (or something like that) and
ext4... and i was wondering if that was the case with this rom?
On a side note... does the can't charge while off bug affect all phones with clockwork 3.0.0.6 and ext4?
Thanks in advance!
You have.to use the one.click root with cwm6 and boot onto it so it can convert you filesystem to ext4. Then you can.flash the syndicate rom. That rom seems to be.the.only one that has the.problem with the phone.locking up when turned off on charge. I'm on bonsai rom and it doesn't do that.

wait so bonsai with ext4 and the new clockwork on eb13 works fine and doesnt have this problem with the battery charging? -thats the only reason why i havent converted to ext4

1. You need to odin to eb13 using the eb13+ext4 odin
2. Yes. You cant charge while the phone is off (you can while it is on or locked)
3. It does effect all roms
Steps for eb13 syndicaterom
1. Download odin and ext4+eb13 and follow those instructions
2. Before booting into clockworkmod (vol down, power and camera), load syndicaterom onto the sd card
3. Boot into cwm, it should do alot of gibberish. When it is done, make sure the text is orange
4. Wipe data/factory reset. Do this three times
5. Wipe cache once
6. Go to advanced and wipe dalvik once
7. Go back and go to install zip from sd, go to choose zip from sd and choose syndicate, choose yes and wait for ot to finish
8. Reboot and have fun!

Okay but I'm still worried about not being able to charge my phone while its off...
Will I still have this problem if I just convert it using the new oneclickroot and continue using stock eb13 deoxded and genocide kernel and I just want to double check... if I use the new bonsai 3.0 with clockwork 3.x and ext4, I won't have the same problem?

Nandroid doesnt bring you back. Odin does and maybe if you use the 2.5.5 root it will fix your batter not charging if it doesnt.

Well in that case I'll stay away from the twilight kernel to avoid using odin again... thanks for the heads up!
So, that means that the twilight kernel doesn't agree with ext4 and the new cwm, causing the battery bug...

I would say get one of those chargers off of ebay with two extra batteries for $10, it has worked great for me. No charging in the phone anymore.
I always worried about how hot the phone gets when the battery is charging.
i believe, from what i've read in the Frozen thread, the battery does charge, even tho it doesn't look like it. unless i'm wrong...

Otherwise I am quite happy with this ROM...it's the first ROM that I flashed (second overall) that I could figure out!
So I can still charge my phone on syndicate but I wont be able to tell if it fully charged?
(I can already forsee overheating issues and me messing up my battery due to leaving it charging over night)
Thanks for clarifying the battery problem...

I just noticed another issue with this ROM. Words With Friends doesn't load when you open an ongoing game. The ad tries to load and then you get this:
http://twitpic.com/47c2c4
Yeah you can. But you could also just leave your phone on and charge overnight if that worries you. Place the phone somewhere where it won't heat up easily, like a table or something that won't absorb heat. Only bugs with this ROM noted is the stock email app FCs when opening an unread email or marking an unread email to being "read," some people noted a few issues using dolphin browser and it loading pages, and the battery thing (but that is a CWM 3 issue). Concerning the Words with Friends bug, there was a fixed posted in the ROM thread, just do a search.

We do block ads by default - though that shouldn't show up when ads are blocked. If you'd like to test, just rename /etc/hosts to /etc/hosts.bak and reboot.

You're welcome! You would need Root Explorer (or some other similar app) to rename the file. Just navigate to the root of the directory, find the folder called "etc," go there and find "hosts" and rename it to "hosts.bak." To be honest, I haven't done it myself, but I would assume that's all you would have to do lol. I've also heard that if you installed the AdFree app and then uninstall it, that would fix it too. Again, I haven't tried it before.
To be safe, make a nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong. Better safe than sorry

Yes you can use ACS Updater to get 1.2....don't forget to wipe cache!
wow..thanks for responding to my first post so quickly..i was wondering if i did it right lol...well...im going in..as soon as i find a htc cord of course!!
Actually, before you just dive in - one thing. It is recommended (highly) that you use CWM 3.1.0.1 or higher to flash SRF 1.2. ACS Updater uses the recovery in your kernel. If you are using Twilight Zone (any), then it does not have CWM 3.1, so if you experience any problems, that may be the issue. SRF 1.2 will flash sometimes on older versions of CWM, but it has been known to cause problems. Just keep that in mind.
Interesting
I believe that is exactly what happened..i installed sfr 1.2 the ol fashion way...and changed kernel to genocide from vision...and upgraded from orange to purple..and now..acs updater is working fine...i am highly excited for the team did a great job with this for this is going to be and is very huge 4 the community!!

Thanks again to all the ACS team for this great updater, makes my life alot easier on her phone now
Which section would you suggest I post it in?
clockwork version
Have clockwork 3.1.0.1 on phone. Is it safe to say if it pooped up on the download list then any of these roms/apps/themes/kernels will install properly?
I just installed ACS updater last night but haven't used it yet. A couple questions first:
When flashing a theme, should you wipe or not?
If you do wipe, what do you lose? (What's in cache/delvik?)
Does it matter what launcher you're using?
I'm currently on srf 1.2 w/ genocide 1.1 and emo beast res theme. Want to try matted reds or maybe a blackout theme. Don't see madoggins bionix black on the list. Could I save the zip to my sd card then choose "install zip from sd" in the updater?
Thanks guys.

Reboot Into Recovery
A few weeks ago I updated to CWM 3.1.0.1 from 3.0.2.5. Then I downloaded the ACS Updater (donation version) from the market. I love it and can't wait to use it to flash various ROMs but I've noticed something funny. If I go into menu and chose "Reboot Into Recovery" it reboots the phone into the old orange CWM 3.0.2.5 I used to have on the phone, not the new version (purple). If I manually power off and reboot manually into recovery, it always goes into the purple screen. Any idea what's going on?

Well like was said... ACS Updater uses the kernel... so its gonna boot up the recovery from the kernel. Remember booting into recovery from the kernel an booting from the 3 finger start-up are 2 different things. U have to have a kernel with purp cwm in it.. like genocide.

ACS Updater
I love using the ACS Updater - installed it from the market a few weeks ago and have been using it ever since to manage my roms - back ups and stuff - anyway - I started having an issue - which also happens using ROM TOOL BOX - when I start to createa back up - the process begins by first shutting down the phone and booting into CWM - HOWEVER, my phone hangs up on the SAMSUNG WHITE Screen - I have to remove the battern - three finger boot - and then when CWM starts - the backup begins immediately - when finished it reboots and the back up is just fine. I have restored these back ups on occassion and they always seem to be ok.
BY the way - when I first installed the ACS Updater - this did not happen - back ups went right into CWM without my having to nudge it along in any way -
It is a real pain to have to remove battery everytime - but I can't seem to figure out what to do tof fix this - I had flashed SRF1.2 and the Genocide Kernel - and after - when I tried to create a back up the same thing happened - I am now on an EHI7 Rom (Stockish) with Honeycome Fushion theme - and it is still happening - any ideas?
I have cwm 3.1.0.1 and my acs/rom manger boot into cwm 3.2.0.0 which I don't think actually exists for the epic hah.

srf 1.2 issues

I flashed srf 1.2 and genocide kernal 1.1 about two weeks ago and ever since my phone is just been really buggy.
For example: I go to call someone and and it connects for about one second and then ends the call. When this happens it also shuts down all the sounds, like the ringer volume buttons don't beep. The only way to get it back to normal is to shut it down and pull the battery.
I don't know if this is a problem but the 3g symbol has two arrows, sometimes it seems like they are white colored for a really long time like no 3g data is coming or going.
There also has been just a number of little annoying things that happen at random.
I have reflashed once already and it seemed to cure some of the problems but then new ones came up.
What are the possibilites of what is wrong? Rom,Kernal,Both, bad download?
What would you guys do? Should I odin back to normal and then download rom and kernal and reflash?
Can someone give me a link to some known clean files that i need for odin to flash back to eco5. If i do odin back to i need to erase anything before i do? Like themes or stuff like that.
Thank you to anyone that can help.
I would re-download everything to your computer, then transfer to sdcard. Then Odin to stock EC05, then wipe cache, data, dalvik 3 times each, then flash the ROM, then flash the kernel, then any mods you want. Reboot between each flash.

Correction, flash rom and kernel in the same flash, otherwise you'll get stuck on boot without a kernel.
So what files do I need for odin to go back to eco5? Does anyone have a link for the correct files?
I will start with a recommendation once you get up and running to enable journaling seeing that you seem to have some stability issues. Get that here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1071723
For ec05 stock go here:

To get the files also has instructions. If you like visual instructions there is a link in my sig for qbking's videos.

Almost so necessary on 1.2 that it should probably be baked in with the option to flash the zip to turn it off

Ok so I downloaded the journal On and Off files from your first link. They seem pretty straight forward. Once you have your custom rom and kernal installed you use CWM to flash the ON zip file to enable journaling and you do the same thing with the OFF zip file if you want to turn it off. Is that correct?
Now for the stock files in your second link, I am still not sure which ones I need. I read the whole post and I am wanting to go back to complete stock setup. I think I need this file:Ok so I downloaded the journal On and Off files from your first link. They seem pretty straight forward. Yes, you just flash the journal on zip right after ROM and kernel then reboot. It adds stability. From the look of the link, it will restore you to an early version of stock and you will most likely be prompted for an OTA update to get back to EC05

I recently got an evo 4g off eBay to replace my blackberry that wouldn't stop freezing on me. Anyhow, it was rooted by the prior owner. It's running 2.2 and I would like to upgrade to gingerbread if at all possible. I have tried the HTC software update but it says that everything is current. Any advice on how to upgrade it would be greatly appreciated.

You have to decide whether you want to stay rooted or not. Taking a software update will unroot your phone. I recommend keeping root. Go to android development, flash a new rom(don't forget to backup before and wipe) and then learn all the magics about rooting; kernels, apps, scripts etc

Ok. Is gingerbread unrootable?
I tried flashing cyanogen but got a boot loop. I downloaded it with Rom manager.

No, it's rootable. There are threads all over about Rooting GB, 2.3, etc using Revolutionary.
Truth is, there are ROMs based on GB with Sense 3.0 hybrids

Gb is rootable but It takes time. Now here's what you should do: get rid of rom manager, search for amon RA recovery and flash it(instructions in the thread) then you want to manually download cm7 from their website(or download decks which is what I recommend) and download gapps. Then use a file manager to move these two files to the root of your SD card(which means these two shouldn't be in any folders) then go into recovery by pulling your battery, replacing it, turning on your phone while holding volume down button. Then choose recovery. Then wipe everything, the flash cm7 and gapps, then reboot. There you go

Thanks for the advice, Crossrocker. My only thing is that if 2.3 is rootable then why wouldn't I want to switch? I'll take your advice in the meantime and play around with CM a bit to see if I even like it. I'm a total android noob (that's what the thread title is supposed to say... still getting used to having a touchscreen keyboard with autocorrect... I miss my physical keyboard.)
Just wondering, what size SD card do you have?

If you want, then go ahead. But IMO you should stay rooted.you might as well just flash a stock tweaked rom

I've got an 8 gig.
Okay. Lemme know if/when you decide to flash a Sense ROM or MIUI, because I wrote up a full guide to partitioning your SD card.
Partitioning lets you offload some data onto your SD card, making the ROM run smoother. It really helps in the heavy Sense ROMs
Right on, tropicalbrit. I'll hit you up for it once I get to that point. I still feel like a caveman trying to land an airplane whenever I'm trying to mod this thing. Lol.

I followed these instructions for flashing cm7 and ended up in a boot loop. Is there anything else I need to change to make it work?

If you used amon RA recovery and wiped everything then it should have worked. But if it didn't, then search goo-inside.me for format all zip in the tools section. Then flash it and re flash cm7
