I recently got an evo 4g off eBay to replace my blackberry that wouldn't stop freezing on me. Anyhow, it was rooted by the prior owner. It's running 2.2 and I would like to upgrade to gingerbread if at all possible. I have tried the HTC software update but it says that everything is current. Any advice on how to upgrade it would be greatly appreciated.

You have to decide whether you want to stay rooted or not. Taking a software update will unroot your phone. I recommend keeping root. Go to android development, flash a new rom(don't forget to backup before and wipe) and then learn all the magics about rooting; kernels, apps, scripts etc
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Ok. Is gingerbread unrootable?
I tried flashing cyanogen but got a boot loop. I downloaded it with Rom manager.

No, it's rootable. There are threads all over about Rooting GB, 2.3, etc using Revolutionary.
Truth is, there are ROMs based on GB with Sense 3.0 hybrids

Gb is rootable but It takes time. Now here's what you should do: get rid of rom manager, search for amon RA recovery and flash it(instructions in the thread) then you want to manually download cm7 from their website(or download decks which is what I recommend) and download gapps. Then use a file manager to move these two files to the root of your SD card(which means these two shouldn't be in any folders) then go into recovery by pulling your battery, replacing it, turning on your phone while holding volume down button. Then choose recovery. Then wipe everything, the flash cm7 and gapps, then reboot. There you go

Thanks for the advice, Crossrocker. My only thing is that if 2.3 is rootable then why wouldn't I want to switch? I'll take your advice in the meantime and play around with CM a bit to see if I even like it. I'm a total android noob (that's what the thread title is supposed to say... still getting used to having a touchscreen keyboard with autocorrect... I miss my physical keyboard.)
Just wondering, what size SD card do you have?

If you want, then go ahead. But IMO you should stay rooted.you might as well just flash a stock tweaked rom

I've got an 8 gig.
Okay. Lemme know if/when you decide to flash a Sense ROM or MIUI, because I wrote up a full guide to partitioning your SD card.
Partitioning lets you offload some data onto your SD card, making the ROM run smoother. It really helps in the heavy Sense ROMs
Right on, tropicalbrit. I'll hit you up for it once I get to that point. I still feel like a caveman trying to land an airplane whenever I'm trying to mod this thing. Lol.

If you used amon RA recovery and wiped everything then it should have worked. But if it didn't, then search goo-inside.me for format all zip in the tools section. Then flash it and re flash cm7

1) so i think i know how to flash a custom ROM, problem is, i dont know how to 'wipe'. and what is a wipe anyway? also, i did the steps on xda on how to root 2.2 so im all set there. i dont know if i got nanlock or whatever that is.
2) i got rom manager and its pretty use to use, except, like i siad, i dont know how to 'wipe'. do i have ot back up everything???
3) what is a kernel and how to install a kernel? for example, i want to install the kernel that lifts the 30fps cap as well as the kernel that lets u overclock to 1.2ghz
help plzzz thx
If you followed the tutorial and used Unrevoked 3, you don't have nand unlocked. Use toast's part 2 or simple root for that.
To wipe, boot into recovery (power down then hold power and vol down) A white screen should come up, use vol buttons to scroll down to recovery and press power. Then just navigate to the wipe option.
Flashing a kernel is the same as flashing a rom. However, careful overclocking past 1.152. Most phones aren't stable beyond that.
Good luck. Hope this helps.

Okay thanks. I installed the netarchy kernel on a rooted 2.2 (no custom ROMS or anything) and everything seems to be working fine. im in the middle of restoring all my applications and stuff right now.
as for nandlock or whatever, whats the purpose of this??
Nandunlock will give you full root.
Soome ifnot most popular roms require you to have full root.
But isn't unrevoked forever supposed to give you nandunlock?

Oh I might add a ROM later on but I'm happy with my rooted 2.2 (no rom) with the netarchy kernel. its awesome!
Hello,
I am having some serious issues with my Evo. For several weeks now my Gmail accounts have not been syncing at all, incredibly frustrating, to say the least. I was hoping that the Gingerbread update would take care of this, so I followed all the instructions I could find, downloaded the de-odexed zip update, booted into recovery, wiped davlik, then installed that zip, and it seems to have updated (I'm running 2.3.3 now, that's the updated version, right?). However, not only has that not solved my syncing issue, but now when I went into Titanium Backup, it said that it could not establish root access! Also, when I go into ROM Manager and try to "Manage and Restore Backups," nothing comes up, when I know there are 3 backups on there (I was trying to delete one of them to free up space on my SD card).
Maybe related are the terrible space issues I've been having. It's also for some time now been telling me that I'm running low on space, but I have moved virtually all of the big programs to the SD card and deleted things I do not use, so I really don't understand how it's having such space issues.
Anyway, I really need some help here. I guess the number one most important thing I need to figure out is why I am no longer rooted. Can I just reroot like I did in the first place? But I'm also very bothered by this syncing problem, and the space issue is not far behind.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't have Amon RA, I do have ClockWorkMod, although I'm a little confused - what is ROM Manager? I'm not sure if ClockWorkMod still works - how can I tell?
Sorry, I'm obviously fairly a novice at this. Thanks much for your quick reply, and thanks in advance for your help.
Superuser is the app that gives you root permission
and rom manager is an app for beginners that will allow people to download roms and making backups doesnt do nothing
OK im going to help you now but your going to have to flash a new rom and everything ok tell me when your ready
Ah, OK. Fantastic, thanks so much!!! I am ready anytime...

Thanks much to both of you. Yeah, all I really want is the updated stock rom rooted, I'll be happy with that. I'll try out what you suggested later and let you know what happens.
In the meantime, anyone have thoughts on my storage issues? It fluctuates like crazy, goes from 50 MB+ free, down to like 4. Driving me absolutely crazy!
Hey guys, I just rooted my phone a few hours ago from the tutorial here on this site for my android 2.3.3 hboot 2.16....well i finally got to root it and got really excited. THe main 2 reasons i rooted were for wifi tethering and terrible battery life. Bought an extended battery before but didnt help much.
Anyway i think i flashed it lol with superuser? ( i backed up files with rom manager and myrombackup) I just downloaded set cpu with the following settings
enabled check notifications check
screen off priority 100 245 max 245 min performance
charging full priority 50 998 max 245 min ondemand
battery<75 priority 50 806 max 245 min ondemand
So my question is, are these good settings? how much better do you think my battery life will be with these settings?
oh and do roms and kernels come in like the same zip file? where i flash them together? and which do you guys think is best for battery life, but similar to the evo stock rom? i dont wanna change my phone too much, i like it, just didnt like the battery life...sorry if this question is redundant, but most of the threads i found were really old so i didnt wanna put in an old rom or kernel if i dont have to.... THANK u guys so much before hand.
If you want to stay stock there are a few roms in the development forum that are stock with bloat removed and minimal mods. You might check some of those out.
One example is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249615
The next step would be a ROM that is ported to the Evo but with a stock look. I am running MikG which I think is one of the best.
A ROM will always come with a kernel that will be flashed with it. You can always flash a different kernel over it later. Freedom is a good kernel (see my sig for a link).
Sent from my PC36100
If your looking for a stock rooted ROM with good battery life you might want to try a froyo ROM with an sbc kernel you will get almost 2 times more out of your battery and its the same old sense 1.0 so you won't even notice a difference.

Battery is OK like any gb ROM and bloat is what we call any apps that come from our carrier that you don't want or need on the ROM like stocks ,nova , sprint TV etc..

If what ever ROM you flash works for you you can keep it forever if you like you will need to try out a few ROMs they all work different on each evo there are a few different types if evos .

What recovery are you using ?
I recommend amon ra 2.3 if your not already .
If you already backed up your ROM from recovery "nandroid backup" then you don't need to do it again its just in case something goes wrong so you can go back to it.
Yes download the ROM from here and the kernel then wipe everything except your sd card and battery stats "you can wipe your battery stats if your battery is at a 100%" then flash the ROM and then the kernel.
If you get any fc's after first boot fix permissions if that doesn't work go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache and reboot that will fix most problems.
Hope that helps you out.

wow, you're super helpful
i actually used the superuser backup- from this thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218386
what's the difference between that and amon ra 2.3?
also i did a backup from the recovery and also from rommanager.
and finally, lets say i get the rom you told me about, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471 - (warm twopoint) it says on that thread,
As this ROM now uses the latest official HTC Kernel (#15) you MUST update your Radio/Wimax. I recommend Calkulin's combo update which is available here or via direct download here.
Installation Instructions:
Download Rom and Radio/Wimax updates and place in the root of SDCard.[/B]
umm does the kernel come in the same file as the rom that i download? and where do I get the radio/wimax updates and what do I do with them? do i flash them too and when?
(should I get a separate kernel for better battery life? some people commented that the battery life wasn't great with this rom, so should i use a different kernel?)

Superuser is an app the let you allow root to apps that need it.
You want to make a backup from recovery its called a nandroid backup I think you have clock work mod recovery you might want to switch to amon ra 2.3 you can get the link from my sig.
When you make a backup make sure to backup your wimax keys I think cwm does it on its own in ra2.3 you can pick and choose what you want to backup.
I'm not sure what radios your on but you should be good if you had 2.3 on your phone when you rooted it.

For the recovery zip make sure its on the root of your sd not in any folder then boot to your bootloader not recovery you can download an app called quick boot to do that or just turn your phone off then hold down volume and power when it comes to the bootloader it will automatically scan for the update just hit volume up to except it then you can reboot the phone or go to recovery.

No you don't have to flash it then I just forgot about rm and flashing it that way I don't use rm anymore only to fix permission.
Now when you go to recovery to make a backup go under backup/restore/ nand backup and select what you want to backup leave the ones that are checked then check android secure ,sdext if your sd is partitioned , and wimax I believe thats all I backup .
You don't need to backup recovery or cache .
You should also make a backup of just your wimax keys that way if you lose them in a flash you can restore just that and not have to restore a whole backup.

- Then, I use quick boot to go into recovery, then I wipe what I have to wipe/factory reset, then I flash the rom....
- THen I dont have to wipe again, and i just flash the kernel...THen, I can use myrombackup to get all my apps and the information in the apps back...
Should i use set cpu with this rom and kernel? and is thiss correct? lol- I'm really excited btw thank u sooo much---and oh the kernel i have on my phone right now is kernel version- 2.6.35.10...

Use mybackup root to backup apps and data then use it to restore them.
Yes it sounds like you got it wipe everything except your sd card, battery stats and screen rotation I'll post a like to a super wipe I use that you can flash to make sure you wipe everything as well.
Then flash the ROM then the kernel then reboot.
If you get any force closes go back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache then under other run fix uid package mismatch or what ever its called that will fix permissions from recovery.

Flash this before you flash the ROM it will wipe everything for you do the wipes on your own as well.
After your all done you should download the app battery calibration and calibrate your battery to get more battery life it wipes you battery stats you can do it from recovery but you should just use the app it will tell you what to do.

I use to have a epic 4g and i could use odin to re flash stock rom and i would root my phone again and i would flash a custom rom of my choice so it would perform better. i wanted to do the same thing with my evo 4g, so i would like to know how can i completely re-flash a stock rom so i can re-install this stupid custom rom that keeps ****ing with my phone...i keep going from rom to rom and wiping everything only works but so much, because i would have something from the last rom pop-up (keybord mod or theme or pulldown) things like that...please help
You could run one of the various RUU files floating around XDA and go back to stock. I recommend flashing VRSuperwipe(attached) in recovery than wiping data, cache and dalvik after. Than flash the rom of your choice. I never had a problem after i started using Super Wipe.

Note: Will not touch your SD card, dont worry.....

Its all personal preference i guess man. I like the way it runs(snappier), the looks, way more options, built in hotspot etc.
Try out decks aosp and then search the scripts below and run those. Aosp just has so many features that I can't live without. Like being able to change music with volume buttons and having the notification bar just perfect. So many options in the advanced options in settings
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.

Yea i tried decks(which is basically CM) but CM still has some features that it doesn't. I especially love the back button kill current app feature. Btw, how did u apply the supercharger mod, what are the steps? I applied it via script manager and i cant really tell a difference. I use SZ as well,,,,,,on CM7.
Run the script as option 2 or 3 and then don't reboot but go all the way back to androids files. Go into system/etc and then into init.d run as root and boot the supercharger file there
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Edit: got it
I'm ready to flash cm7, I don't know why.. but I need advice on how to run it properly.
Everytime I flash Cm7 I end up with terrible battery life and the rom itself runs terrible, this never happened when I first rooted a long long ago as Cm7 was the best rom for my phone.
Any suggestions?
On a side note is this the best rom to run games and emulators?
My setup to flash -
1.) Flash Cm7.1/2
2.) Flash what I think is the latest Gapps for cm7
3.) Sometimes I will or will not flash the latest kernel and sometimes I'll flash gb+ics kernel
Could it be because of my SD card, because I'm partioned (Long story)? I just want cm7 the way it use to be..

Lol thanks for the advice, but my problems are different. I'm running cm9, but the whole SD card thing goes way back into CWM, actually pure helped me when I needed to flash his Jb build.
