I use to have a epic 4g and i could use odin to re flash stock rom and i would root my phone again and i would flash a custom rom of my choice so it would perform better. i wanted to do the same thing with my evo 4g, so i would like to know how can i completely re-flash a stock rom so i can re-install this stupid custom rom that keeps ****ing with my phone...i keep going from rom to rom and wiping everything only works but so much, because i would have something from the last rom pop-up (keybord mod or theme or pulldown) things like that...please help
You could run one of the various RUU files floating around XDA and go back to stock. I recommend flashing VRSuperwipe(attached) in recovery than wiping data, cache and dalvik after. Than flash the rom of your choice. I never had a problem after i started using Super Wipe.

Its all personal preference i guess man. I like the way it runs(snappier), the looks, way more options, built in hotspot etc.
Try out decks aosp and then search the scripts below and run those. Aosp just has so many features that I can't live without. Like being able to change music with volume buttons and having the notification bar just perfect. So many options in the advanced options in settings
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.

Yea i tried decks(which is basically CM) but CM still has some features that it doesn't. I especially love the back button kill current app feature. Btw, how did u apply the supercharger mod, what are the steps? I applied it via script manager and i cant really tell a difference. I use SZ as well,,,,,,on CM7.
Run the script as option 2 or 3 and then don't reboot but go all the way back to androids files. Go into system/etc and then into init.d run as root and boot the supercharger file there
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.

I rooted my evo yesterday, so I am still completely new to how things work. (Though I have read the forums for a while)
I know I can flash a custom rom to fix the 28FPS limit I am getting, but I don't have time to completely wipe my phone and rebuild everything again.
It's kind of looking like I just flash a kernel? but I am not sure and I don't want to brick my phone.
Is there a way to just fix the performance limitations (i.e. FPS limit) and keep my stock 2.2 and all my settings/preferences?
Thank you.
I searched but didn't find anything that made sense.
Phone:
Evo w/ stock 2.2 (UnrEVOked3 root)
You should be able to just flash a custom kernel, but I don't know how those work on plain stock. Make sure you nand first.

I have rooted stock 2.2 with Kings kernel #9. Works flawlessly. It's hard for me to go back to regular once the FPS is unlock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754128
Just flash the zip file from recovery. Make sure you do a nand backup before you start flashing the kernel.
Thanks for the info.
I will give it a try later.
Can I flash any kernel? Or how does that work?
I was looking at snap 8.2. Is it compatible with stock & sense?
Also, once a kernel is flashed can you update it without problems or doing a full nandroid restore?
Thanks again,

No. Go for Netarchy's or Kingklick's kernels for 2.2 Sense roms. Snap is only for cm6/AOSP style roms.

+1.
I'm using hero 4 on stock odex with no issues and great battery life.
Thank you.
I will read into each kernel.
Any suggestions on which is best/worst?
EDIT: Thought I would post some links to each kernel you listed:
KiNgxKernel
netarchy-toastmod
I couldn't find the link for Hero_over's kernel. The forums search function is down for some reason.
Please correct me if those aren't the correct or official links to the kernels.
with netarchy it says:
An important note for Clockwork mod Recovery users:
Clockwork Mod is reportedly not wiping correctly (ie; if you try to wipe cache/dalvik-cache/data/etc it's not actually doing it, or not doing it right)
You may want to consider using Amon Ra Recovery instead.

not wiping correctly may cause your phone to bootloop no matter the kernel(Fresh's seems to be particularly sensitive to it), you should be ok though. If it happens just keep redoing it till it works.
I'm using netarchy's 4.1.9 cfs ATM and it's working great. Smooth as butter.
king kernel is really good, thats what im on right now. medium use: 500+ texts, wifi on, data on, hour of browsing, 30 mins of music playing, live wallpaper. with all that im hitting ~13 hours and im at 8% right now. king kernel is pretty good, nice and smooth too

Wow! that is double my current battery time with stock and everything turned off to conserve power.
Should I use BFS or CFS?

im on the latest king kernel which is BFS (the king kernel #9)
as for backing up your kernel...i dont know...(didnt know that was possible). once you unlock fps, you'll never want to go back.
edit: also forgot to add that my screen off is underclocked to max:245 and min:245. so that made a HUGE difference in battery life

There really is no generalization for which is better, BFS or CFS. Every phone is slightly different in build due to margin of error in production. Some people have great results with BFS where others do not. I tried both extensively on Netarchy and much prefer CFS (better performance and battery). Why? I don't know. It just works for me. You will probably have to do some experimenting of your own.
Edit: Also concerning recoveries, I would go ahead and flash Amon_RA's recovery over ClockworkMod just to avoid conflicts. Amon works with everything is very straightforward to use.

you can use rom manager to install ra, but then all you'll be able to use rom manager for is to download roms. Which is still ok - some folks prefer it this way, because some things shouldnt be too easy, if you know what I mean. If you let a tool do all the work, what do you do when that tool breaks or is unavailable, and you have to do it manually?
ra can only be used outside of rom manager. Nands cannot be used between ra and clockwork - if you backup with ra, you need to restore with ra, and if you backup with clockwork, you need to restore with clockwork.

I don't mean to be ambiguous, but it really depends who you talk to. Some people swear by RA, and insist that clockwork doesn't wipe properly. Other people can conclusively prove that clockwork does indeed wipe properly, and use that with no issues. Personally, I use clockwork, but do all my flashing and wiping manually and not through rom manager. The only time I ever had any issues was a while ago, with an older version of clockwork.
I also think that clockwork has the benifit of not requiring signed zips, but don't quote me on that.
edit - just wanted to add that some devs will specify one or the other to be specifically used for whatever it is that you'll be flashing. So if they say to use X to flash, you better try using X to flash before asking why you're having issues
idk im new to trying kernals, but im running fresh 2.2 and im only getting 31-33 fps.
using kinklicks bfs 9 kernal
any help?
I have tried most of the kernels listed. For me, the best has been Netarchy's 4.1.9.1 cfs. It is smooth and has not had a single glitch, which I can't say for the others I have tried. The second best I tried was the Baked snack battery kernel #5.
cfs or bfs? What I found was that bfs gave slightly better benchmark scores than cfs, but I had a lot of odd problems or glitches when running bfs kernels (mainly scrolling lag in some apps, and some apps fcing randomly). haven't had any problems with the cfs kernels. Frankly, I haven't found any advantage to bfs because, while it seems to give better benchmark scores, in actual use it seems much slower and more laggy to me than cfs.
Clockwork or AmonRa recovery? I have used both, only had a problem once (boot loop), and that was with clockwork. Since then, I have always used Amonra's recovery to flash with. When flashing just a kernel just wipe cache and Dalvik cache, then flash the kernel. As long as you do not wipe data (reset) you should not lose anything when you flash the kernel.
Oh, and when you do a nand backup, it backs up the kernel you are currently using with it. So you can easily switch back and forth to test by restoring your backups.

Yes, that is more or less correct. It's not always mentioned, but you should also wipe Dalvik when flashing kernels.
As far as a suggestion, what kind of ROM are you running? Keep in mind that Sense ROMs and AOSP kernels may not play nice together, and vice-versa.
For Sense, I personally like Lou's #8, great battery life and smooth as hell performance.
AOSP, I like Savage Zen, what little I've used it.. but it's fairly new and I've been on Sense ROMs recently.

Nandroid is a full system backup. In Clockwork, go to "Backup and Restore" and click Backup. This creates a folder in /SDCard/Clockworkmod/backup/date-and-time.
To wipe Dalvik, in Clockwork go to "Advanced" and click "Wipe Dalvik Cache." Be warned, the next time you boot after this wipe it is possible for it to take literally several minutes, that is fine and normal, just let it go.
To find your Android version, go to Settings > About Phone > Software Information. You are probably on 2.2 if the phone is new.

Just do the backup in Clockwork. People refer to it as a "Nandroid" because that is what the option was actually called in the older versions of Clockwork. Nowadays it's just called "Backup," but the old name is still used in conversation.

I recently got an evo 4g off eBay to replace my blackberry that wouldn't stop freezing on me. Anyhow, it was rooted by the prior owner. It's running 2.2 and I would like to upgrade to gingerbread if at all possible. I have tried the HTC software update but it says that everything is current. Any advice on how to upgrade it would be greatly appreciated.

You have to decide whether you want to stay rooted or not. Taking a software update will unroot your phone. I recommend keeping root. Go to android development, flash a new rom(don't forget to backup before and wipe) and then learn all the magics about rooting; kernels, apps, scripts etc
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Ok. Is gingerbread unrootable?

Gb is rootable but It takes time. Now here's what you should do: get rid of rom manager, search for amon RA recovery and flash it(instructions in the thread) then you want to manually download cm7 from their website(or download decks which is what I recommend) and download gapps. Then use a file manager to move these two files to the root of your SD card(which means these two shouldn't be in any folders) then go into recovery by pulling your battery, replacing it, turning on your phone while holding volume down button. Then choose recovery. Then wipe everything, the flash cm7 and gapps, then reboot. There you go
Deck's + SZ + SuperCharger script + ViperMod script.
Thanks for the advice, Crossrocker. My only thing is that if 2.3 is rootable then why wouldn't I want to switch? Okay. Lemme know if/when you decide to flash a Sense ROM or MIUI, because I wrote up a full guide to partitioning your SD card.
Partitioning lets you offload some data onto your SD card, making the ROM run smoother. It really helps in the heavy Sense ROMs

2) Any ROM that gets rid of credential storage for Enterprise wifi
3) Allows me to uninstall the stock Sprint apps
Thanks in advance.
Nitrus ROM 1.6.1. Super fast and no stock sprint app.
MIkG 3.11.More stock sprint app, but the useful ones.
Digital karma V7. Based on sense 1 so its very fast, but have the look of snese 4.

Problem is, that according to the directions I'm using it will wipe the device before I even get to root.
Ok I got Nitrous to work and is running on my phone. One thing I forgot to do is do a backup of the stock HTC/Sprint ROM before I started. How can I go back to do a backup of it?
Don't worry about the back up. I didn't do it and I'm just fine.
Feel the soapy goodness!!
If you do want to go back to stock, just grab an image from one of the threads in the wiki.

I'm currently using Remics-UX from mazdarider. Loving it.
Fast, Smooth, no stock sprint apps, great battery life. Not too sure about the WiFi thing. It is my daily driver.

Great rom....op mentioned wanting sense though.
Classic or nitrous for sense 1.0
MikG for sense 2.1 with 3.0 elements
Derp3D for sense 3.0
PrimeXL for sense 3.5
Those are some good options. They will all have bloat removed or made removable. Of those, classic is my favourite as it has the most baked in options and performance tweaks.
I'll have to keep monitoring nitrous. The battery seems to be draining faster than it did with my stock rom. I did do a battery calibration though.

Just a heads up. I flashed the following GE 4.3.ROM and everything seems to work great. The ROM is very snappy and battery life is amazing.

If you are using TWRP, make sure you do Factory Wipe, then wipe system, dalvik, cache, etc. Then install the ROM, and do wipe cache/dalvik again. I chose to fix permissions as well.
It should boot within a minute or so.
Note 1: No need to flash an M919 kernel. The included kernel seems to work just fine.
Note 2: I had to clean up the ROM a bit by uninstalling bundled Google "bloatware". The ROM is pre-rooted.
Note 3: Obviously, all TouchWiz/Samsung stuff will be gone.
All credits go to janjan.
Just a quick update. The extSDcard doesn't seem to be fully working at this time. I'll wait for the update I guess.
Biggest problem with GPe Roms for me is the lack of support from Titanium. Makes wanting to switch very difficult.

OP do you have a bug with the stock google keyboard when you go to change the volume of the keypress (in advanced menu of the keyboard settings) it doesn't change no matter what setting it's on?
Other than that it's a very nice ROM, I liked how he included the stock AOSP browser too...

I disagree... I think it is one of the most robust, for the paid version. I do agree there are some nice free alternatives, however-
