App reduces in size when moving to SD Card? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone noticed what happens to app size when you move to SD Card?
For instance, Rockplayer:
Total 13.68mb
Application 13.67mb
Data 16.00kb
Then move to SD and here's what it changes to:
Total 380kb
Application 360kb
Data 20.00kb
does anyone know why this is?

When you move apps to SD in a stock ROM, it does not move it completely. It still keeps a part of the app within the NAND flash (i.e. internal storage) due to the way the applications are written.

thanks. Ive recently installed CM7 RC1 for my Desire and seen I have the option to move any app to SD card now. Is this a good/bad idea?

It is needed when you lack space. But I don't recommend it because sdcard is slower then your real internal phone storage.

Also, although I am not sure this is still relevant with today's app2sd, but don't move widgets to SD or you might break the widgets.

isnt CM7 app2sd+ / data2sd scripted? if so, keep it in phone, and it is symlinked to sd card

as far as i know class 6 or 10 cards are quicker than nand

If quicker it would make a really small difference. The internal speed should be about the same as the iPhone's je3, which is around class 6 speed. Which also means a minimum writing speed of 6mb per second. Another reason why not to use it is that it might shorten the life of your sdcard.

Do apps on sd card still use phone memory?

I`m using app2sd on my desire and have moved about half my apps to sd card, but i`m finding i`m still running out of phone memory, my fault for buying navigon i guess (26mb for that mother!).
Do apps that are installed to sd card still use some phone memory??
I`m also finding that once its down to anywhere below 15mb (notification of low space), I can no longer download anything from marketplace.
I have to uninstall an app then reboot.
I thought the whole idea of 2.2 was to move apps to sd card to free up phone memory but its not having the expected results with me.
Thanks

any solution or idea about this
thx a lot
If the app is stored on the SD the davilk cache might still be on phone memory, if it is it will still use phone memory.
I think that is indeed the case.
I have moved Angry Birds (13MB) from phone to SD card, and now I see it showing 1.6MB. Which means 1.6MB is still on phone memory and the rest on SD card.
Ok thanks for the replies.
But how about the downloads not starting even when I have plenty of space left.
Thanks

I get the 'out of space' error.
However, the SD/Phone card storage says my phone has 65mb free.
I install all my apps to SD, just wondering why, with 65mb free, it wasn't letting me install to the phone.
Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks

Yes, it seems 15mb is the minimum threshold on phone memory to download and install the apps.
Navigon takes 26MB? That's a lot!
I have Sygic Maps and it takes less than 7MB. I can move it to SD, but I leave it on phone memory for maximum performance.
Try App2SD application from Market (which can be installed and moved to SD card). You will get a nice overview of all the apps that can be moved. You can also see which apps are the biggest.
I've got more than 60MB free space now on phone memory.

[Q] App2SD - What happens when you flash/odin/swap phone?

So lets say I have a few apps installed on my SD card, and I put it in a different phone (That supports App2SD of course)...what happens next? Do I have to re-install or can I run it from the SD without anything else, like a portable application in the desktop world? Just not very clear to me...thanx!

You still need to install them.
So then the only real advantage is that you free up space on the internal storage? Cause I would imagine it's slower running from the card right?

Yes because there is a lot less memory on the phone. App doesn't run any slower. Access time should be within milliseconds and then it loads into phone system RAM while you are using it.

SD card as external vs sd-ext

Advantages and disadvamtages? What are they?
Thanks

From my days on Desire, I found D2EXT much better cos ALL of the app was moved and the system was tricked into thinking the EXT part of the memory card was actually the internal memory (NAND). For some strange reason there was only few roms that had it (hence why i was on MIUI on my desire).
Don't understand the Xperia Play forum, very disorganised, gonna use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374061 to move my apps to SD card. Defo want more apps, hate this running out of space!!!!

Basically the use of having an ext partition in your sdcard in the 1st place is our device's very poor internal storage(400mb) and the system is already taking up about half of it.
If you notice other devices with high internal storage as default (8gb, 16, 32gb like Galaxy S, SII, Note, Etc.,) doesnt even bother having it, even though its still possible.
If youre installing some user apps and its frustrating because you cant move it to SD card via settings menu, its because the app wants you to install it to the internal memory,
as they “believe” the app wouldn’t work in your SD card. If youre using a higher internal storage smartphone this isn’t much an issue to you, but if youre struggling for space,
this is quite annoying.
So the use of an ext-partition in your sd card is needed for those apps unmovable via the “normal way”.
Some 3rd party apps such as Link2sd(my personal favourite), Simple2Ext(CM7 rom), Apps2Sd, and many more out there will make use of this partition
These tools will “fool” your system in linking those user apps to your internal memory where in reality they’re moving it into your ext-partition, which is basically to your sd card also.
Take note that some apps though(well, not much) are not functional if they’re in the ext partition. In my experience only 2 apps failed to work, Beautiful Widgets and Minecraft pocket edition. I don’t know about others since
almost all apps seem to function well in the ext partition.
Not only that, some apps also(such as titanium backup) can convert a system app to a user app, so you can move it to your sd card using Link2Sd! But I wouldn’t recommend it though, I’m reading a lot of threads here
which system apps are safe to transfer/freeze/delete, so I have some system apps converted to user and now on my ext partition. Sweet.
Hope Ive helped.
Can I second noojster on Link2SD. Both minecraft and beautiful widgets work fine for me. Jelly Defense doesn't seem to like it though. Only one I have found so far.

I doubt that. Internal storage is not like cpu freq, where you can increase it and see whether it is safe or not. This is like " I want to increase my pendrive storage from 1Gb to 2Gb without purchasing new pendrive."
Can it be done? By "hardware hacking" point of view, it is possible.
Should you do it? I guess not.

External SD Card as Internal Storage

I've got an external microSD card that I'd like to use as internal storage, or at the very least be able to move apps to the card, but EMUI doesn't want to allow me to. I've already set it as my default storage, but that doesn't much help my situation since none of the apps actually go there.
I know older versions of android had a function to merge the SD card into internal storage so that it seemed like one big drive. Anyone know if you can do that on the Honor?
Short Answer..

Ohh merging and using as one drive? Thats weird..
He just wants his apps to move into sd card or use memory card as the only source for every data storage..
Secondly why would anyone even want to use phone storage instead of memory card? Or even merge? Thats weird.. And i never saw any phone doing that ever in my life.. Samsung which gives transition the best to shift data from phone to storage also doesnt merge or use it as a whole.. Its either of them always..
Like i said earlier.. Theres no way to shift all the apps installed and data onto the memory card on honor 7x (only samsung can do that seamlessly) .. Since it was written on phone when it was the main storage at that time..
But when storage changed to memory card any new data will only be written on a memory card.. To free mobile storage.. Simply uninstall them and re install again to get it written on memory card this time..
To Conclude...

I Pulled His Quote In As Well Sid..
As you can see my friend... He inquired about the "Old Fashioned Way" of doing it... Formatting External as Internal.
I understand you may not have seen this before.. so I am including a pic (see below) so you can see what it would look like in a settings menu that had this option.
The reason why one would want this option? Basically because of just what you said..
Only certain things will tranfer / store on the External drive..
If you format the External as "Internal" Now 100% of your content will store there.. because, it's one HUGE drive..
Think of it.. if you have a FAST SD-Card with 256 or even 128 gigs of storage.. you can Merge that with your 32 / 64 gigs of internal.. have no visible slowdown in performance by the naked eye.. (read/write scores may drop some if you care about such things.. ) and you have all.... this space... for movies , pics , ( porn.. :angel whatever..
That's what makes that option an inviting one..

This technique is called adopted storage and is an AOSP feature since 7.0. I tried it also in my prior phone, but I would not recommend it any longer, even though it looks promising on the first sight. Unfortunately there are drawbacks:
- The technique behind is a daemon, that scans the internal storage and relocates larger file to the external card. You do not have any control which file gets relocated when. Nevertheless it is a transparent process.
- Since the data get copied asynchronously, copying large files to the device requires at least free space in the internal memory of the size of the largest new file. In case you are dealing with a number of video files, there might easily raise a storage size error message during copy even though your system tells you, that there should be enough memory available.
- The SDCard has to be prepared, which means, it has to get formatted in an encrypted way. Encrypted SDCards are the second best option out of a selection of two ... if you have an issue with it by whatever reason, there is no way to recover the data e.g. via a PC.
- If you have an issue with the card by whatever reason (occurs more often than you would expect, expecially when you are more often on low battery than expected) and since you have no control which data is located on that storage, you will have an unclear amount of corrupt data ... even if your "internal" storage (which is part of the bundle) may lead to some running apps, in worst case your available data is completely ruined.
- It requires newer custom recovery (AFAIK TWRP >= 3.1.x) to decrypt adopted storage.
- Last but not least: Even if you have an SD card with really fast read and write speed (usually known as U3), the real access speed (usually read speed) depends on several other facts like the HW interface to the sd card. In general it is much slower than access to the internal memory which I can confirm (e.g. by speed test apps).
So why would you want such an instable and performance impacting technology? On low-end phones with very little memory probably it would make sense, but the 7X has enough memory in any delivered option, regardles whether you take the smallest or the largest available sizing. In general it is a smartphone and not a NAS system in your pocket. So there is usually no need for the whole world in offline maps accompanied by 200k audiobooks and a dump of the whole music data from your preferred streaming service (even though it would be incredible cool).
Just my point of view ...
I'll Step Aside..

Well Let's See...
Point 1) OP question was answered with a viable solution by Sid21.
Point 2) OP specific question was answered "Directly" by Raiderwill.
Point 3) Discussing the merits of Adopt Storage further based on how "You" personally feel about it for me, is pointless.
Point 4) I'm sure there are threads here on XDA that you can search out to continue why your point of view is relevant.
Point 5) I'm sure if the OP wants to continue a private discussion with you he knows how to contact you.
Well.. that's pretty much all "I" have to say about Adoptive Storage.
Now... if you want to start a thread about why you think Huawei is giving you false promises in regards to the EMUI 8.0 / OREO 8.0 / FACIAL RECOGNITION UNLOCK and PROJECT TREBLE updates... I'll be more than happy to indulge in your thread in regards to that conversation..
Because quite frankly... I disagree with you 100% in regards to the updates and in regards to rooting the 7X now.. it makes ZERO sense... and even you had to fork over money to fix your phone.. because Rooting got you in a hole...
Now, By All Means.. start a thread and let's discuss that.

Sir.. Are You Saying You've Deleted System Files To Make More Space?
I hope this is not the case.
I hope.. you mean you deleted "Applications" and expected to get more space in return..
It's proportionately based... By that I mean, lets say you had a game installed that was 1.00 GB in size.. and you had 20 GB free.
If you uninstalled that 1.00 GB game.... you would now have 21 GB free..
Just in case you meant to say "RAM" and why have you not freed up more of it... People make the classic mistake thinking if they reomove every conceivable app from their device they are going to free up more RAM..
Not The Case.
RAM management will simply load something else into that allotted space...
Anyway (I digress) if you are still running stock (hopefully) all you have to do is preform a Factory Reset..:good: and you are right back where you started from.
If you are out of space.. I believe this device supports OTG.
Proper solution needed for same issue
Can someone pls give a solution for this problem asap
