Ive got this beautiful wallpaper here that I want to use with MattedBlue setup I am working on but I cant get over the blurry the picture quality looks on my phone. Is it possible to improve the quality for picture? Any knowledge anybody can drop on me would be much appreciated!
use wallpaper set and save from the market to set wallpapers at full res instead of having to crop
Thanks Success. I actually do not have to crop this picture at all... the dimensions are perfect so WSS didnt make much difference. So I guess there is no way to improve image quality?

It's because that wallpaper has a gradient which is made up of more colors than the 65k the EVO screen can handle..
Yes, WSS is better than the N1 3D Gallery app and better than the Sense Gallery app, but there's still a hardware limitation, unfortunately.
I've compared some of my wallpapers on my EVO to one of my friend's PalmPre and another friend's Epic 4G and I was blown away.
Some people say they can't see the difference.
I work with graphics all day so I notice all the banding and lack of colors and everything else.
Nonetheless, the EVO screen is still excellent, color capacity notwithstanding.

It's only me, or Netflix looks like crap on WP7? I just got the phone yesterday and one of the things that push me to get the phone was the ability to have Netflix... but after several movies,, I saw that the quality is very bad, it's like is not using the full Color scale. The movies look like is using a 16M color pallete... is that the way its looks? I tried over wifi and 3g and it was the same
I've noticed the first couple of minutes are pixelated, but then it smooths out and runs fine. I haven't noticed any color problems with it. What device are you using it on?

Yeah, this is my experience as well. Something to keep in mind is that the Samsung AMOLED phones (Omnia 7 and Focus) have some color banding, so if whatever you're watching has a lot of gradients, then it may look worse than it would on other devices. In my experience with my Focus, I haven't had too many problems with the colors looking bad.
I use the Surround and have been satisfied 100%. Occasionally it gets pixelated due to bandwidth but never any color issues.
I havent been color problems in Netflix. Looks good on the screen resolution.

I have the Samsung Focus.
I'm not talking about been pixelated, resolution wise it's looks good,, the issue is with the coloring . is like netflix is using a less than a 16bit color pallete,, take you computer screen for example, go to the properties and change your color to 16bit or less and you'll see what I'm taking about... is the gradients

I guessing its a super amoled problem then as others haven't had this.
I found this article,, it confirms what I was trying to explain... and I though I was getting a better display going with samsung instead of HTC..., but I think part of the issue is due to WP7 , I used to have a Galaxy S and never notice the color banding issue.

Let me assure you that the Galaxy S also has horrible color banding. Well, the ones I've used do as well. All AMOLED screens do, to some extent. Gradients end up looking reeeaaally bad, which is why I'm sticking with LCD until the technology improves.
Sorry bud, it's not Netflix's fault. Blame Samsung. Hopefully it can be fixed with a software update.

The galaxy s phones that you've used have all been duds then because its definitely not a problem with amoled in general. The pentile "pixel" arrangement may make them look a little less sharp, but there is no color banding on android.
That definitely looks like a wp7 software issue as the article says.

lol you guys must be on crack i have a focus and i see no issues while watching netflix. the beginning is pixelated for the first 30 secs or so and then the image is perfect hd quality. theres no comparing the image quality on this phone to one of an lcd.

well, if it's only on the amoled displays, sounds like a samsung problem. Have you tried to exchange it and see if its better?
And how would you notice it on a galaxy s phone? Android doesn't have netflix.
Funny, because I'm typing this from an Android phone with an Amoled display and if I view an image - video or still - that has color gradients I get the same color banding as shown in that article.
Believe me, it's an AMOLED thing, and can be fixed if programs run in 24 bit. Most don't, though, which is why LCD displays are better in my view
wanted to chime in that netflix looks pretty awesome w/ 3g on my LG Quantum
Yeah,, I guess is not a Netflix issue,,, but using netflix was when I first notice the issue because netflix use 16bit... is a combination of WP7 and Amoled, WP7 could have reduce the banding issue by using dithering but they did not... When I had my Galaxy S running Android I never noticed that issue and I had the phone for 6 months... even my wife's iPhone3gs looks better on netflix..., I guess I will have to get used to it... since of all other WP7 phones on At&t the Focus has the better Camera.
So, been wondering this for a while. Couldn't really find much online about it.
I have an AMOLED DINC, and when I take screenshots with DroCap or ShootMe, the screenshots look washed out when I transfer them to my computer (haven't tried with the Android SDK yet). Is it because my DINC is AMOLED and it's being displayed on an LCD monitor, so the colors aren't right?
Also, in ShootMe, when the screenshot UI comes up, my screen gets the washed out look right away, even before I take the screenshot. The images look fine on my DINC, its just when I view them on my computer and/or upload them through like TinyPic and view them.
Tried saving as both PNG and JPEG. Wondering if the SLCD DINCs do this as well?
Thanks for the help.

The pictures aren't washed out; the colors on your AMOLED screen are a LOT more virbant that most PC monitors. This is pretty normal
I guess washed out wasn't the best way to describe it lol. "Bright" would be a better word I guess.
That's what I thought the reason was, but I wasn't 100% for sure.
No way to get around this I assume?

Maybe editing through Photoshop or straight from the phone using Picsay, or photoshop, or whatever app you prefer.
Haven't really used PicSay or Mobile PhotoShop much; are there options to change the color balance and stuff like that in those? Otherwise yeah, I'll pry just have to use PhotoShop.
I've noticed the same thing. Only solution I can think of is processing the picture afterwards, adjust the color balance and maybe up the saturation. Interested to know if its just a problem with AMOLED screens though?
That's what I would like to know too lol. Not sure if its just AMOLED or both it and SLCD screens.

PNG is a lossless compression format, so that should be a non-issue.
So for everyone out there, like me, that has had the phone for a week now. How do you like the resolution? I jumped ship from the evo 3d, so the resolution is a little less than on that phone. I will admit, I miss it a bit, but the quality of the screen more than makes up for the lacking of resolution.
My question is two fold: For those of you (especially if you had qHD phone before) who have used the phone for a bit now, how do you like the resolution? Does the text seem grainy? Does the email, text messages, web browsing, etc seem to suffer at that resolution on a 4.5 inch display?
Personally, I am not sure. I would hesitate to say that it doesn't effect it, but it could be in my head.
Secondly, do you think the resolution will effect the look of the next version of android (ice cream sandwich) negatively?
Just looking to start a discussion on what may be the only negative about this phone.
I have to admit I miss qHD, but the amazing contrast makes up for it. Reading an ebook in night mode (white text on black bg) is absolutely amazing. And the pixel density isn't too bad...from a glance with casual use you don't really notice. I don't think I could tolerate the crayola-esque size without setting the dpi to 200 though. At that size it looks great, but makes some GUI elements ugly/broken. Fortunately I like stock android, so I've replaced the dialer, contacts, etc since I don't want them anyway.
Check out the macro photos I took comparing the panels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273814
Coming from the Evo 3D as well... Don't miss it at all at this point. The 1080p fills the void and the only time i see pixels or grain is when Im scrolling.

Honestly I can't stop starring at the display on this bad boy! Just got mine about 3 days ago. Amazing how I can even see the display outside, in Phoenix at that!
I did notice playing angry birds when it's doing the training part, or shows you how to play that it looked a little pixelated but when I was playing the game that went away. As if perhaps that piece of the game's quality was originally like that. That's the only place I've seen any type of grainy/pixelated picture. Love this phone! Wish 4G was available in phoenix.
this phone is the greatest! although the resolution is not like the qhd from the 3d, 4.5 super amoled plus, and the battery life makes up for it, battery on this monster is amazing!!!
Miss it, I don't even remember it. While the resolution was higher on the 3D, the E4GT screen seems light years ahead of the washed out EVO 3D screen.
In this battle, WVGA Super Amoled Plus definetly beats a QHD SLCD. I bet no one was getting any wows when someone looked at their EVO 3D screen even though it was QHD. You will get some wows when people see the EGT4 screen though.

I have both the photon and the ET4g and I must say I really like the qhd display on my photon and the overall feel of it better than the et4g
, still trying it out but the huge icons and the touchwiz I am not adjusting well. I usually use go launcher but it foesnt scale right on the bigger low res screen.

I'm using Go Launcher on my ET4G and it looks perfect.. Currently using it with the Honeycomb theme and the icons are much smaller and look great! The screen transition animations are buttery smooth compared to my original Galaxy S!

The icons are big, but they don't look bad. Overall, the screen, yes even when it comes to reading, seems to be clear than my evo 3d...which I have setting right next too it.
No offense, big the photon, arguably, has the worst screen of all 3.

Good to see you here! I miss my colts back for the 3d, but I love this phone!
Also, LCD density changer can give you the feel of qHD if you are rooted. Set it to about 200 and it looks pretty good.
Alot of epic og owners knew the quality of it me I could care less even tho I did not come from a qhd display. The blacks and colors are far beyond any other screen out there and the size to me is perfect
Hey guys,
I did some searching and couldn't seem to find a "Phase Beam" Live Wallpaper STILL image. I like the design of it, but don't care for the live wallpaper aspect. Any way I can get a HD image from the live wallpaper? Thanks in advance.

don't think theres any way to do it. closest thing would be a launcher that removes the statusbar and is totally blank and someone just takes a screen shot, but then you'd also need a custom launcher since you'd need to set no scrolling to get it to work.
Found one:

and i'll just shut up now lol.
only downside to that is that it's a little small for the Gnex. our wallpapers need to be minimum smallest size 1200. thats 960. so you may notice some loss in quality. or possibly not. the advantage of the high DPI sometimes makes low resolution images still look good on the screen.
Shouldn't our wallpapers be 1280x720 or 1200x720 at least?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
i've seen many people say that if you want the best quality you need 1200+ on all sides.
possibly something to do with how android crops it. I've yet to try anything below 1200.
keep in mind, that though the actual on screen resolution is 720 wide by 1280 high, the real wallpaper resolution is 1480 wide by 1280 high because of how android handles wallpapers. so anything smaller will be lower quality.

I did not know that. Thanks for clarifying though.
Edit: Wait, did you get those mixed up? Shouldn't it be 1480x1280? Not 1280x1480.
You see, I only have one homescreen. So, I don't know if that matters. There obviously isn't any wallpaper scrolling.

yeah probably.
height should be 1280 and width should be 1480.
even if you have one homescreen, android still wants to crop a square wallpaper. thats been the issue since the G1. so if you want a portrait image, you need to use a third party app.
now, if your using a custom launcher then thats another story, as some when you disable wallpaper scrolling it gives you a crop for a single screen.
Hi all,
I noticed that whenever I take a picture and then open it up in the gallery, the colours are all different than the actual colours that appear on the screen when you are in the Stock camera. So I tried pressing the screen capture button and comparing the same picture, Stock VS Screen capture.
The results where great imo, screen capture has a better representation of colour and better contrast, also the lighting and brightness come out more accurately.
I also noticed that even without auto enhance on (A feature that appeared in a modded camera app recently) the colours and brightness are still saved incorrectly.
Now I am using the home button with a Capture Screen function in Viper X with the capacitive button set to the shortest delay.
The good:
Better colours, better contrast, better lighting.
Saves in .png format.
Smaller size
The bad:
Only 710*1280 pictures with a size of around 1mb
Delay between shots until the .png file is saved.
No auto-rotation of pictures taken in landcscape view.
Lower quality images - Compression discoloration.
I have attached some pictures with comparisons so you can see the difference.
I used the UiMod camera I posted recently with the lyapota mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875022
All the best
imo the standard pictures look better
The pictures have been resized so there is some quality loss there too..
Try it on your phone if you have a mod that allows you to take screenshots.
The quality is not that good, but I think the colours look better.

I think the skull looks alot better on screen capture, other two I'd say camera wins.
But I think the camera on the HOX is a total let down, considering when they were advertising they jumped out of a bloody plane with it, if we did that it would be blurry as hell, false advertisement bloody hell !

I think the camera is a let down too, I was so excited when I first bought it but then after a while everything started seeming strange, colours, contrast, brightness, the saturation was way too much also. Pictures look pretty good with the lyapota mod though :- )

the camera is great for fast moving objects, took a few pics of my nephew running around the other day, every single pic was focused and not blurry.
i have noticed that the hq camera mod slows it down, unless you reduce the quality a bit.
Just bumped into this thread and i have to agree with the OP, i just noticed that 2 days ago and I was trying to find a solution. When I take a picture it looks great during the review time ( 3-5 seconds) but then when I open it in the gallery it seems it loses its quality. It's driving me crazy!
