So for everyone out there, like me, that has had the phone for a week now. How do you like the resolution? I jumped ship from the evo 3d, so the resolution is a little less than on that phone. I will admit, I miss it a bit, but the quality of the screen more than makes up for the lacking of resolution.
My question is two fold: For those of you (especially if you had qHD phone before) who have used the phone for a bit now, how do you like the resolution? Does the text seem grainy? Does the email, text messages, web browsing, etc seem to suffer at that resolution on a 4.5 inch display?
Personally, I am not sure. I would hesitate to say that it doesn't effect it, but it could be in my head.
Secondly, do you think the resolution will effect the look of the next version of android (ice cream sandwich) negatively?
Just looking to start a discussion on what may be the only negative about this phone.
I have to admit I miss qHD, but the amazing contrast makes up for it. Reading an ebook in night mode (white text on black bg) is absolutely amazing. And the pixel density isn't too bad...from a glance with casual use you don't really notice. I don't think I could tolerate the crayola-esque size without setting the dpi to 200 though. At that size it looks great, but makes some GUI elements ugly/broken. Fortunately I like stock android, so I've replaced the dialer, contacts, etc since I don't want them anyway.
Check out the macro photos I took comparing the panels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1273814
Coming from the Evo 3D as well... Don't miss it at all at this point. The 1080p fills the void and the only time i see pixels or grain is when Im scrolling.

Honestly I can't stop starring at the display on this bad boy! Just got mine about 3 days ago. Amazing how I can even see the display outside, in Phoenix at that!
I did notice playing angry birds when it's doing the training part, or shows you how to play that it looked a little pixelated but when I was playing the game that went away. As if perhaps that piece of the game's quality was originally like that. That's the only place I've seen any type of grainy/pixelated picture. Love this phone! Wish 4G was available in phoenix.
this phone is the greatest! although the resolution is not like the qhd from the 3d, 4.5 super amoled plus, and the battery life makes up for it, battery on this monster is amazing!!!
Miss it, I don't even remember it. While the resolution was higher on the 3D, the E4GT screen seems light years ahead of the washed out EVO 3D screen.
In this battle, WVGA Super Amoled Plus definetly beats a QHD SLCD. I bet no one was getting any wows when someone looked at their EVO 3D screen even though it was QHD. You will get some wows when people see the EGT4 screen though.

I have both the photon and the ET4g and I must say I really like the qhd display on my photon and the overall feel of it better than the et4g
, still trying it out but the huge icons and the touchwiz I am not adjusting well. I usually use go launcher but it foesnt scale right on the bigger low res screen.

I'm using Go Launcher on my ET4G and it looks perfect.. Currently using it with the Honeycomb theme and the icons are much smaller and look great! The screen transition animations are buttery smooth compared to my original Galaxy S!

The icons are big, but they don't look bad. Overall, the screen, yes even when it comes to reading, seems to be clear than my evo 3d...which I have setting right next too it.
No offense, big the photon, arguably, has the worst screen of all 3.

Good to see you here! I miss my colts back for the 3d, but I love this phone!
Also, LCD density changer can give you the feel of qHD if you are rooted. Set it to about 200 and it looks pretty good.
Alot of epic og owners knew the quality of it me I could care less even tho I did not come from a qhd display. The blacks and colors are far beyond any other screen out there and the size to me is perfect

For all those who have the Evo now. How does the screen look, as far as resolution goes, compared to the droid's screen? I have a 3GS and my g/f has the droid and her screen blows mine away. Just wondering if the Evo's screen will look as good as the droids.
Screen
The screen looks amazing because of it's size... But it has a lower pixel density than any other phone I have tested (nexus, droid, desire, legend)... And the screen is not AMOLED so the picture is not as vibrant... It is very similar to the iPhone... Check out my youtube channel or website TeensTechReviews I will post a few videos with a comparison of all the phone screens.
it is teh awesum. I love the size, it's one of only a few bigger than my previous phone, the HTC Universal
The screen is amazing, and the size is awesome. I had an old iPhone 3G and now when I go to pick up that one, it feels like a little toy with a tiny screen. If you are upgrading from a 3GS, you won't be disappointed.
Screen size is awesome and I like it but when I hold it next to my Nexus one it is so much more vibrant than the Evo. The Evo screen looks a little washed out but not real bad. I sacrificed the more vibrant AMOLED screen to have a larger screen size and I don't regret it.
The EVO has the same screen resolution as the Droid, but stretched over a larger area. So in short, it should look just as good as the Droid, which is way better than the current iPhone.

actually, it has the same resolution as the nexus and incredible. the motorola droid has a couple extra pixels on it.
the size of the screen is nice, but compared to a nice OLED screen, it looks totally washed out. if you had a nexus in front of you to compare, you'd be sad looking at the screen on the evo, i kid you not.
honestly, if i had my druthers, i'd want a screen the size of the evo's, but OLED, or AMOLED for quality. it wouldn't hurt to have it at a higher resolution either, given the increase in real estate.
i'm not disappointed that i got the evo, but i do miss my nexus. i don't however miss the fact that TMO's coverage is the suxxorz in my neck of the woods. i have only had one dropped sprint call, in my apartment, where TMO is totally radio silent. it being a phone and all, being able to use it as such makes a big difference, lol
Lol i had a g1 and my girlfriend had the droid. screen was SO amazing on the droid, i loved just taking it from her and using it.
i have the evo now and her droid doesnt even look as good in comparison. the evo next to her screen in terms of color is mostly the same but the screen size of the evo makes the evo look SO great. the big icons, web browsing experience, its just really hot. the droid looks puny compared to it.
and the g1 and my ipod touch? forget about it...it annoys me to look at it, seriously. lmfao
I really like the Evo's screen/display. I just wish it showed up better when I'm outside. I can barely see the screen, even when the brightness is turned all the way up. Thats one thing I loved about my BB Curve. It could be a super bright day in direct sunlight, and I'd have no problem seeing the screen.

That's why I ordered an antiglare/antismudge screen protector.
I was going to get the Nexus S, but I can't do without at least 32gb. The Evo was my second choice, but only because I "heard" the display was a bit washed out in compared to the amazing SAMOLED display with the Nexus S.
I really prefer the Evo when push comes to shove, though. I prefer HTC Sense, the bigger screen, Sprint, 4G, etc. but I have to have a nice screen.
What do you guys think?

There's no question, the SAMOLED display looks way better. The way blacks blend in to the device makes it look great. Colors are more vibrant. The display isn't that much smaller and is actually a decent size. The only problem I have with the display is if you look at text really close you'll see some jaggedness because of the sub pixel pattern they used.
The galaxy s series definitely has some jaggedness to the screen because of the subpixel pattern, pentile matrix. But its readable for the most part. The colors on it are gorgeous for everything but white screens with text, which is a lot of the internet unfortunately. The blacks are the truest blacks ever. And the proccessor on the galaxy s is excellent.
Somehow the evo manages to feel a bit faster though in most day to day things and menus. Overall the evo is the better phone for internet use and reading of text, but the screen doesnt display blacks and colors well. Still I prefer the evo over the epic.
you can't go wrong with either phone, the evo at this very moment has a more mature after market community, something not to be take lightly. I have never looked at my evo screen and been left wanting, i am very pleased with the screen

I came from tmobile and a vibrant to sprint and the evo. There are only 2 things that I miss from the vibrant...the 16 gb internal storage, and the samoled screen. The galaxy s phones have slot of problems because of their rfs file system, I.e. lots of lag. I'm not sure how the nexus s is but I would wait on some reviews first. I definitely happier with the evo

I have an Evo and I've never thought the screen was lacking. I haven't seen the Nexus S screen.
But if the screen is the most important thing, enough to ignore all the other criteria you mentioned (bigger screen, 4G, Sprint, SenseUI), maybe just get an iPhone 4. It's definitely the best screen. The highest resolution, and I think the only IPS screen currently available. I hate Apple's control over their products and user experience, but if the screen is that important to you, maybe that's a sacrifice you're willing to make.
However, if we're limited to Android devices, between the SAMOLED Nexus S screen and the LCD Evo screen, I can't imagine the difference is enough to get the Nexus S given all the Evo advantages you listed.
I just think you're putting too much value on having the "best possible" screen.

The Nexus S does not use the same file system and is lag free for the most part. From what I've seen/read, the Nexus S doesn't have HW flash acceleration enabled like the SGS does so viewing flash enabled websites can be a bit laggy. Seeing as how it uses the same CPU/GPU as the SGS, Google and custom ROMs should solve this problem pretty soon and once they do, it'll be pretty much 100% smooth. And I mean smooth -- there's no question that it looks and feels faster than the EVO.
A lot of people also say it looks ugly and cheap; it is glossy but combined with the blended into the case blacks of the SAMOLED, the curve, the thinness, and the buttery smoothness of Android, it IMO feels a lot better than the EVO.
Yea I was reading about all that, the big turn off for me is no micro sd slot, that just doesn't make sense why they left that out

I agree. I don't know how things work, maybe there's some kind of limitation to how the internal storage file system works? But I would have liked to see 16GB (hell, I would have been fine with 8GB) of _real_ internal storage (none of that quasi external storage crap) and a expandable micro SD card for multimedia and app/personal data storage. Personally I only keep about 3 gigs of backup music (when I can't stream) on my card so I don't need more than 16GB but I could see how people would need more.
The screen on the Evo is gorgeous. Sure, side by side the SAMOLED wins but it's not like you're going to be missing it if you have an Evo.
Evo screen is not as good but the size difference makes up for it.

I have had the Evo since launch...if i was looking for a new phone I would personally wait for the next crop of phones to come out.
The EVO screen is a bit disappointing compared to the Galaxy S phones, but I can definitely tell a difference with the extra 0.3.
Also, if you use Cyanogenmod, you can also add a built-in widget to calibrate the screen colors to appear less washed out and darker, which makes a significant difference imo.
I think the thunderbolt is pretty bad ass... but i came from a Droid X back to the Incredible just because the 3.7 screen size, thinness, and trackball just makes for a better device for me at least.
Anyone hoping HTC and Verizon release an Incredible2 with the same or slightly thinner size and upgraded specs (LTE, dual core, higher screen res.. etc) to go along side the bigger Thunderbolt?
I would love something like that. An even more refined version of this phone. It's sleek already, but as with all tech devices, will age rather quickly. Sometimes I think these 4+ inch screens are too big, the Inc is a great size. Inc2 should also have a front facing camera in addition to what you said (LTE, dual core, higher res screen). It would be my next phone without a doubt

Yeah I had an X for a while and finally went back to the incredible for just that reason. the added bulk outweighs the benefits of the bigger screen. The incredible is just such a sweet feeling phone in the hand it just feels like a super modern device.. not a mini tablet.
I have a fascinate i'm playing with now and it is definitely more sleek than the X but i havent activated it for a few reason. its still fatter and taller than the incredible, although thinner. and samsung hasnt released froyo for it.
the build quality on the incredible is also on par with the best smartphones. the buttons click firmly, soft touch back. nice red accents and the battery cover doesnt slide of so easily like moto devices.
I'll probably stick with the incredible line for a while if they keep it alive.
See, the beauty of the larger phones is that they have LCD screen types... which not only makes daytime sight easier, but you can use an app to change the LCD density, thus increasing your resolution. It's not a massive view change, but it certainly does make a difference when you think about how big that screen will be. Every little bit counts.

i'm pretty sure the Thunderbolt has the same SLCD technology that my Incredible has other than size obviously. and while you can change the LCD density with an app... it makes some apps not render correctly.
thunderbolt= undervolt
I say undervolt because i cant beleive we will not get our dinc 2 the way it should have been. hdmi out is fairly standard on top end devices.. not undervolt.. we all like our smaller dincs or we would get evo's or motorola devices... again not undervolt..big and ugly. Even when the dinc first came out with verizon it was the featured phone for only 30 - 60 days. then not even on display. and how much fun was getting the tv out cable( wich many verizon emplees told me does not exist) only to find out it does not work very well..Htc makes some of the best phones! Add verizon...Htc + big red= undervolt... too bad .
I had an Evo 3D and honestly didn't really like it. So I "downgraded" to the Nexus S 4G. I like it a lot more and am excited about getting ICS soon but truthfully the thing I really really miss is the bigger screen. I also missed the other core, as scrolling and pinch to zooming is pretty bad on Nexus S 4g. I am a bit of a display snob though, I dont like the WVGA resolution on the Nexus I prefer sharp text and sharper browser pictures like the Evo 3D had (but like the colors of Super Amoled). Anyway, is the Epic Touch 4G the way to go? The phone looks sexy and 4.52 inches of screen is awesome, I'm just concerned that the WVGA stretched out even more will look worse.
What is the difference between Super Amoled and Super Amoled+? The only Sprint store I have has the Epic Touch in the worst possible spot, right in front of a window and the glare makes it tough to compare.
-Phone is mainly for texting, listening to music/podcasts, web browsing, and youtube viewing.
Also, I plan on buying this off contract and I don't make a lot of money so this will be my phone until my upgrade is up in 2013.
Thanks for any input it is much much appreciated.
Personally I love the screen of my phone but I wish it was HD like the galaxy nexus or the iPhone.

I am running an ICS ROM with a custom kernel that has voodoo sound and color support on my NS4G. It greatly improves the sound and the colors on the screen. I have both phones and while the Nexus is nice, the ET4G is simply amazing! The speed, smoothness, battery life, camera, etc are definitely a step up on the Epic Touch. Here's a screenie of the NS4G with custom voodoo color settings. The colors are much more vibrant than on a stock setup
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Yes I love the voodoo sound quite a bit, it made me invest in a nice pair of headphones and its worth every penny. I actually like the stock colors just fine, I absolutely love the colors of super amoled what I don't like is the resolution. I would keep my Nexus S 4G as an MP3 player if i get an Epic Touch just cuz the sound chip with voodoo is so beast.
Thanks for the article an Super AMoled vs. Super Amoled Plus. Im gonna get to reading that, from what I understand Super Amoled + is sharper and less pixelated, that is my biggest problem with regular Amoled so that would be awesome. Those HD displays on the other carriers are so tempting, but if Super AMoled Plus fixes the pentile issues, the Epic Touch would be rocking a 4.5 inch screen exynos monster and that's just tough to beat.
I moved from the Evo3D to the E4GT. I am not looking back. I love that it has a larger, more vibrant display and that it's lighter. I DO miss the solid feel of the Evo3D, and the grippy back. Sometimes the slippery back of the E4GT makes me feel like I'm going to drop it, so I just have to remember to hold it tighter than I normally would. I know I could get a case, but that takes away from the sexiness of the device IMHO. I guess I'm not too worried about damaging it since I can get new phones anytime I want. I'd say, it's a no brainer. Go with the E4GT, you won't be disappointed.
My girlfriend and I are on a shared plan. I had been waiting on the GS2 to hit sprint ever since the phone first debuted internationally. Just recently I got her to trade her evo 4g for a Nexus.
I would agree with you about the sound DAC on the Nexus s, it's beast if you have voodoo sound. But the GS2 isn't half bad either. I stream google music every day at work and with a decent set of headphones (for reference I use altec lansing backbeat titaniums, they are out of production but pretty much the best in ear buds you can get for under $50) the sound is quite good. It doesn't get as loud as the nexus due to a weaker headphone amp, but it gets the job done. (haha I can't say enough good things about voodoo, if you turn that headphone amp all the way up with good earbuds, you could pretty much blow your eardrums...)
Also, the whole 720p screen deal is really overrated. I checked out the Galaxy Nexus at a verizon store and honestly I still prefer my ET4G. And don't even bother comparing the Evo 3d's screen the the GS2, that would be a straight up insult. After owning an ET4G for a few months, all of the HTC screens just look like garbage. I would easily sacrifice resolution for quality, and any GS2, ours included, really delivers on quality.
If you were gonna buy off contract, it doesn't really matter when you buy I suppose, but the sooner the better I suppose. By the time this phone is truly obsolete (it's hard to say when, because phone tech is really becoming more advanced overnight) I would imagine that LTE will start rolling out on sprint and you could step up to a good LTE phone.
Also, the white version hits sprint early next month. Might be worth waiting a week or two to see if the white version is your cup of tea.
Yeah Evo 3D screen had washed out colors and horrific viewing angles. People praise super lcd for color accuracy but on the evo 3D certain colors weren't very accurate. The lime green on the ANdroid Market looked awful, using my laptop as a reference. I did love it for its sharp text and resolution for video playback.
My original plan was to get an iphone 4 due to resolution while also keeping my NExus S 4G and switching back and forth periodically. And then buy the SG S III since that's gonna probably have an HD screen with Super Amoled, not to mention spec'd like crazy. But if the 4" screen of my Nexus gets on my nerves, the 3.5" on the iphone and looking at an app drawer all day would drive me crazy.
Epic Touch it is, im curious about the white one. I imagine it will look super slick. The white skyrocket is beautiful, im just worried that getting in white would be a bit girly.
I played with the ATT version today.
1) The thing is gorgeous (they only had the white colored one). Its curves and black/white contrast on those are beautiful. It felt a bit taller than ET, but otherwise it felt slightly skinnier and thinner, although this could have been an illusion due to a different aspect ratio. The case had an awesome feeling texture.
The screen pops out just a little over the case, and it looks like a jewlery gem.
2) The display was amazing. Much brighter than ET and less pixelated. Definitely much better display than what's in Galaxy Nexus. I think the blacks were darker than in Evo3D display, but I'm not sure about that.
3) Camera was very good. It takes pix instantaneously. I got some very good shots just by pointing it and pressing the shutter button 3-4 times quickly. No messing around with trying to focus and stuff. The video recording was amazing on the screen, better than ET. I didn't get a chance to see it on a large monitor.
4) The UI was very snappy. I think the scrolling and swiping in desktop and menus was smoother than in ET. There's still a small delay between pressing on an app and it opening, but it's a smaller delay than in ET (felt like maybe quarter a sec to open a dialer). Once apps were loaded into ram, switching was instantaneous, much faster than ET.
Loading of webpages was easily twice faster than ET (on the same wifi), and scrolling was on par with ET or very slightly less smooth. It felt like your standard not optimized for gpu browser (like any browser on ET other than vanilla), but because the phone is much faster it was still very smooth. Much smoother than other browsers on ET. Pinch to zoom was about the same.
I ran a couple of benchmarks. Most of graphics benchmarks were running at 60fps. I noticed a couple of instances where the phone was much faster than ET. In quadrant, in test where a moon is rotating around a planet - that was running at a solid 60fps. Also, in nenamark2, the fps counter seemed to be stuck at 57fps throughout the benchmarks. On ET, it goes up and down to, sometimes down to 35fps (average 53).
----
Overall, it felt like a next gen phone compared to ET. Kinda like switching from Evo3D to ET. Everything felt better than ET. The biggest difference was web browsing. It felt like night and day. It was actually fun to browse on the thing.
Cool story bro.
I'm going to go check it out tomorrow. I really want to go back to Android and I've been drooling over the One X since it was first announced. It looks sexy as hell and pretty much all the reviews have been extremely positive. I just hope they get that damn locked bootloader taken care of because if I do get it, I will want to get rid of Sense post haste.

Next time you play with a display phone, Bluetooth file transfer the pictures and videos you took on it to your phone. That way you can look at them better at home on better equipment PC/1080p screen. Don't make the videos too long at highest resolution or its going to take a very long time to transfer over slow ass Bluetooth. Take the same pictures and videos at the same resolutions on your phone too so you can compare them with the other phone. I did this with the gnote and 4s. Interesting comparison results you will find, yes? God, I'm talking like Yoda unintentionally again.
