Porting phone.apk from stock to cyanogen - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So right now I'm in dsixda's rom kitchen, trying to pull a few stock apps(phone, dialer, contacts, messaging) from a rooted stock rom(cr 2.13 OTA) to the nightly CM7. It's giving me process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly at boot and won't let me past. So I know that the OTA rom is froyo and CM is gingerbread, I'm assuming thats my problem. so that being said, first am I right? What do I need to do to make this work? and where can I get a stock gingerbread rom? can I simply drag and drop phone.apk, dialer.apk, etc. or is there more to it?

I don't think that will work. Espresso roms are sense, cm roms are not, they have different frameworks and such. First off, I'm PRETTY sure phone.apk is just the backend to sms/dialer/radio/etc., so you can leave that alone. Why do you want to move those apps over to cm7? Theming? Messaging and contacts I KNOW won't work because they require the tmobile framework resources that cm roms don't have, same with the dialer. You won't be able to move messaging either, since it has different coding from froyo to gingerbread. Contacts and dialer you MIGHT be able to move over if you ALSO move over the com.htc.resources.apk from /system/framework to the same location on the cm rom. You also might have to move the com.tmobile.framework.apk or something like that from /system/app to the same location on cm7 as well.
That may or may not work, it'll more likely just cause force closes everywhere since htc apps are very dependent on other apps and proprietary framework resources that stock android doesn't have.

I don't understand why you would want any of that. To each his own, but I think cyanogen has made all of that stuff better and simpler. The only thing he needs to add is the ability to end the call from the notification bar. I thought sense had a good idea there

I'm not knocking CM I do like it, it's just still buggy. For example in his contacts when entering a new a number with the keyboard the numbers are haywire and dont work, so you have to use the touchscreen. The main thing with the dialer is I miss the T9 speeddial, and messaging is a bit buggy as well, plus I like the old mms.apk ui better. For now I found out about dialer 1 on the market and will use that, but hopefully when it's all said and done things will be better on CM. Can anyone suggest a good messaging app from the market? contacts too maybe?

I use GoSMS. It's free, and you can theme it and such.

Alright. and almost forgot, the stock music player... any way of porting that? I really like the original widget better, and I miss controlling it from the lock screen. I want the old calendar back as well. thoughts?

i missed the dial by name from the SenseUI - this app is a GREAT replacement, you swipe from side to side to get to recent/favs/dial, and it's free: https://market.android.com/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne

this is available in the later CM7 nightlies (30+) - you can hold the volume buttons to do prev/next, and you can even have the controls on the lock screen...

This is a replacement contacts called Phonebook 2.0. It's pretty cool.
Also, pretty much any of the widgets in sense are sense only ;p

Thanks guys. Yep figured out about the music player, thats good. Already using dialer one, I like it better actually. Now I'm missing the calendar. I really miss being able to see when stuff is coming up on the old widget. Any body got anything on that?

13/08 1.0 - MoDaCo Hero Rosie Remover

Nice and simple this... by popular request... a Rosie remover for Hero! It simply deletes all the Rosie and widget files to return you to the 'stock' Android look. Saves you a bit of space too!
Yes, you can achieve exactly the same thing via the command prompt, this just makes it a bit easier for newbies...
This update is designed to be applied on top of a standard build, using the recovery image linked below. DO A NANDROID BACKUP FIRST!
Details and download:

Changelog
1.0
Initial Release
Lots of folks asking about this - I've added it to the wiki
Went to add the MoDaCo Patch but its already there Ta Paul xx
Okay. I might have just fudged up. I got too excited and did the update.zip *without* making a nandroid back-up..
Pure speculation, but if I decide I want the Rosie stuff back on how should I pull that off?
Is there an advantage between this and doing the method where you go into manage applications and clear defaults to go back to Android default?
So how much faster and slicker is the Hero with Rosie removed ?
I've heard reports that it is much faster and I'm kind of tempted......

Only clearing the default will still keep the Sense UI in memory, it has its own process if you take peek with a taskmanager (I think its called TouchFlo or something). Removing it completely obviously wont have it running anymore

I ran the Rosie remover on my Hero and it feels a lot faster indeed. All together a more fluid experience now
Gives certificate error...
does this remove anything else other than touchflo and support files? Like the music player and any other hero apps?

The apps are all there (calendar, people, mail, messages, music) and they still work
Lol guys please
no need to patch anything
just go into manage applications, scroll down to touch flo and clear dfaults....the next time you press the home button you get the option to use the default launcher..
It is touch flo that causes a little lagginess on the hero as it did on my g1 running the hero rom
dont flash or patch anything unless its really needed

But if you check the running processes you will se that touchflo is still running and using system resources, if I'm not mistaken it will also restart even if you kill it. To prevent that you have to either remove it or just rename the apk file.
I took the plunge and tried the rosie remover today.
And let me say that my phone is a LOT smoother and faster.
pressing 'Home' button gets the home screen much faster. Apps start faster. And I dont get the slowdown that I can get with the Rosie UI. It may not be as pretty or fancy but sometimes you just want speed.
So much so in fact that I'm going to stick with it this way for now.
I can only hope that HTC do address the lagginess of the phone in their upcoming firmware update. I'm hoping that it's down to some rushed, poor coding. Rather than the fact that our phones just arent fast enough to run all the extra processes etc involved.
Anyway, I'd recommend people try it. Do a nandroid backup first so you can go back if you want.
Thanks Paul, it does feel much snappier now.
I guess another image replacing HTC's custom apps (alarm, contact list...) with Android's default ones is not possible? What about one using the default Android theme (the orange one)?
Maybe be a silly question - but what are the reasons / benifits to removing Rosie ( Rosie is the Sense UI right? )?

Well, for one the fact that the phone is much much more responsive that way. I've been using it for several hours now and I can confirm it.
Sounds brilliant!

Thanks for releasing this - I know it's not hard to do with the terminal, but I can't be the only person who'd rather not see a command prompt on their phone. We'll be installing Linux next...

We retain HTC's custom ones too. However, I just followed the instructions in this thread to install Android's stock calendar app and I'm truly bewildered how much faster and cooler it is. I'm thinking we can open a thread collecting HTC's custom files and stock Android ones, with a quick tutorial to install them?
Whats the difference between removing Rosie, and just using sommething like Home Switcher, that lets you chose which environment to use ( Android or Sense UI)?

Some stock/motorola applications on htc hero

Is there a way to get for example the normal text messaging or music apps to work on the htc hero? Or the motorola messaging app (with the facebook inbox and stuff) to work on it? i went through all the possible roms today and loved the motorola messaging app. i also loved the stock android one too. also if its possible to change the default phone app? and maybe the contacts? i love everything else about the phone. haha. i know some people will be like why did you get a hero? well i really like those apps alot and i love my hero for every other reason. i do know how to use adb and everything. i have tried removing the stock messaging app and putting the stock android one and it doesnt appear. anyone got an idea?
do you have the motorola apps? I would like to test these on Hero.
I have them and would gladly post some, but there is an .odex file to go along with it. if u want to deodexize i think tis called the file then ill gladly post them for you. i just don't fully understand how to do that. i do however have the stock android apps without the .odex in them and it still does not work on the hero after removing the defualt messaging app. anyone got an thoughts onto how to do this? it would be great to have a htc hero mixed with motoblur rom.
That would be awesome! I would atleast like the Happenings app/widget from blur. =)

Roms

I have only ever changed my romm from 2.1 to 2.2 stock. Not sure what makes a custom rom so much better. What else can you physically do? Is there one that works with ota stock radio and froyo update (downgraded to get it). I am rooted on 2.2. I would like to see whats so cool about changing. Advice?

Try them out for yourself. Personally I like the fact that custom roms have verizon bloat removed and also seem the run more smoothly. Just remember to create a Nandroid backup of your stock rom so you can go back to it whenever you want.

Download ROM Manager and Titanium Back up... make a Backup of your ROM currently and try out another ROM! no harm in trying it. If you don't like it you can always go back to EXACTLY how you left it.
Anyways... every ROM has there "thing" and they usually start off as a vanilla or a sense based ROM. A ROM can be optimized to to be much snappier and even come with their own custom kernels. Don't forget that you can get better battery life! They all work with the Stock froyo radio... except maybe the Desire ROM. I think you need the latest radio leak for that one, but you can install it and mess with it... just no signal.
These devs pretty much can add, delete, and modify practically anything and everything and it seems to be ALWAYS better over stock.
Examples...
-My app drawer has added functionality now. I can uninstall apps straight from the app drawer and I can organize my apps in FOLDERS inside the app drawer so now it's not just a huge list of icons anymore.
-When adding apps to my homescreen I can change the naming convention or have no name at all!
-ROMs come with a lil "theme" to them so us users don't have to hassle with adding the mods our self.
-battery indicators
-notification drag down bar
-rosie can be different (vanilla, sense, expresso) with right button customed
-widgets can be themed to look more aesthetically pleasing
-a mix mash of vanilla and htc apps are used (best of both worlds)
-the Inc camera can be replaced with the EVO
-added Pre-Installed Apps for us (ex. wireless tether)
.....etc.
The list can go on and on. you can do a lot of this on your own but why when a dev has done it for you? and not only were they nice enough to create a nice ROM for us but they also went through beta testers to catch most of the bugs and glitches you would find if you did it yourself!
Anyways, download and flash a couple ROMs and you will never go back!
Thanks for the awesome response. I certainly would like folders in my app drawer so i didnt use a whole screen for folders. Thanks again

His rom sounds like uncommensense. Most roms dont actually do that. His does. Your launcher can also add alot of customization. Launcher pro allows you to elimanate names but you cant name folders where as open home allows you to.hes right check it out. Thats most of the fun.

correct... those were just examples. every rom has their "advantage" over others. the custom app drawer is definitely ROM specific.

[Q] Cyano-sense-mod

Hi Im A Htc Sense Rom User, I Like Sense A Lot especially the links and it lets me stays organized. The Problem Is My Internal Memory Is Small (1.1 gb)
I Tried Cyanogenmod and i liked it a lot
the only thing im missing well everything in htc sense i want the speed of cyanogenmod but i keep on returning to sense roms.
my question is: is there a way i can replace the htc sense stuff in CM?
like the camera
flip to silent
smart dialer
htc widgets
contact linkup or at least to sync my contacts facebook pictures
sense keyboard
please help me i want cyanogenmod so bad but at least replacements for the sense stuff cz the sense rom are big in size ( 250 mb) and cyanogen is small & fast.
Take a closer look at these Apps:
like the camera ---> Camera360
flip to silent ---> LLama
smart dialer --> Contapps
htc widgets --> which? / what are they doing?
contact linkup or at least to sync my contacts facebook pictures --> contapps
sense keyboard --> ThickButtons
How many apps do you have installed? Because if you're filling it up with 1.1GB of apps, you're doing well!
My recommendation is to use a Sense ROM, then use a ROM cleaner script on top to clear out the stuff you don't use, giving you more space. Because Sense is a full framework, not just a few bits and pieces running on top, you are unlikely to find any replacements for Cyanogenmod that work quite as well.
This could be a bit off topic.
Is there anyway I can get the cynogenmod phone.apk to work with Sense?
I'm coming from mid-ranged and low-end phones to the DHD and all of them use phones.apks similar to the cyanogenmod one. It's been over two weeks and I still uncomfortable with Sense phone.apk.

this is what i recommend too, just strip out everything from the rom you dont want and then flash it
rather than starting at the ground up find replacements for everything, start with the finished article and start slimming it down

Well I Will Give You A Suggestion Try To backup the cyanogenmod dialer in titanium backup and restore it in any rom u want. Always backup first if it didnt work try finding something in the market. And i will try this and i will post a link or tell you if another way worked bro.
I went from an HTC hero which was my first android phone to an optimus v, my preferences for replacing most of the sense feeling is launcher pro for the Widgets and go contacts for the smart dialer/contact linkage. There is a patched HTC_ime somewhere on this forum that will install on a non-sense rom but I can't remember where or search it out right now.

I finally got my AOSP/CM look and on touchwiz.....fair warnings, pics in post

Well I finally did it, I got my phone with Touchwiz, but AOSP style/themed, mostly a themed look I guess you'd say
I had to buy a couple or 3 apps but it's well worth it to me, so this is not a free solution, but for me, I'm ok with it, because now it's paid for and I can customize it a lot!
(Note: I am not advertising for these apps just explaining what it does in case someone wants to know before buying.)
Apps I use are:
-(PAY APP) Widgets locker (for the aosp style lock screen),
It also has android style sliders, and Iphone slider style, and of coarse the AOSP circle. You can customize this locker a ton, and add widgets and shortcuts to the lockscreen as well, it's the most intensive customization locker app I've seen yet.
-(PAY APP) Nova Launcher Prime.
I bought the prime because 1: I love it a lot, and 2: the paid version lets me hide apps in the app drawer and I personally use that feature so, as well you can customize the icons to look how you want to in the drawer and on the homescreen as well....other than that free version works fine. but it's good
to support some companies, and this one I highly respect, because they are tried and true.
-A flashable zip that changes the Touchwiz messaging to the AOSP/CM style messaging
I am not sure how to revert back though, so if you flash it your stuck with it as far as I can tell, unless someone figures out how to flash back to stock. I also do not do MMS, but basic sms texting, so I am not sure if that works with this, but I read it did. I also do not remember where I got this file at, but I can host it if someone would like it, just let me know.
-(PAY APP) exDialer (for the dialer of coarse)
Well worth the money to pay for it, because you can theme it as I did to look like the ICS/AOSP/CM style dialer and contacts, paid lets you have more functionality, such as single click dialing,as apposed to 2 step dialing with stock CM/AOSP dialer, you can theme the dialer to a style you like, IE: ICS style, Iphone style, Touchwiz style, etc..., just overall good and has good customization for a dialer.
-Gallery apk file, has the CM/AOSP camera and Gallery in it. It's a simple apk you jsut install it. I can also host this if anyone is interested.
As for the underneath part like settings and such, they are still Touchwiz style but I am using an AIO add-on with 3minit and quicktoggles in it, and gives me the 3 windowed settings and I can also customize the toggles, which are also Touchwiz style.
Some of the internal stuff is Touchwiz and can't be altered. I freeze a few touchwiz things such as gallery, camera, and contacts, but for the most part you can't modify the touchwiz stuff without messing up the system. Overall though it looks and feels more like the AOSP/CM/Stock android look and feel to me.
You can get rid of the contacts, gallery and camera if you wish, but I'd recommend against it, I would just leave them frozen since you may need them later down the road for whatever reason....a good example of this is, contacts......I froze it, then had to un-freeze it because I found out the exDialer would not export/import contacts, so I just un-froze the touchwiz contacts, imported my contacts then re-froze it and it's working fine. if you ever have to export/import though you will have to un-freeze it again, so I'd highly recommend leaving it frozen as well as the other stuff, because it doesn't hurt the system performance or eat up THAT much space when it's frozen and you won't have them in the way of your modified stuff either such as the cm style gallery and camera.
All I really wanted was the base stuff, so there are also other added modifications you can get or do and are a lot simpler than what I haev done such as AOSP mail, AOSP keyboard, AOSP calculator, etc..etc....I just shot for the base of it.
I'm posting pics to see what you all think....let me know, I personally am happy with the results.
I tried to grab a snapshot of every aspect of the system, so hope I covered everything.
This is my lockscreen app I bought called Widgets locker.

I added shortcuts and widgets so you could see it all.
The winamp player is a shortcut, The circle is built into the app, and you can customize each of the 5 around the circle, the other things are app shortcuts.
Each one works within the lock screen so it never leaves to the home screen, only the app, and once you finish it goes directly back to the lockscreen. Maps even works with it, I thought that was kinda cool.
This is the modified Touchwiz recent apps clear section, by holding home button down, it comes in the AIO mod I have, and adjusted to use the stock touchwiz icons look.
You can of corse, swipe each one away, or clear all.
This is the stock touchwiz settings with the 3 sections, also in the AIO mod I am using, but it's still the touchwiz look somewhat.
The sliders on the wifi and 4g are kinda messed up, they don't work once you slide them once so the work around is to tap it and go into the settings that way.
Here we have the CM/AOSP style messaging I use, it's a recovery flashable zip.
As stated above once you flash it, I personally do not know 1: if MMS works, as I use only sms, and 2: I don't know how to revert back to stock messaging, so do this at your own risk......I have used this and for sms it works fine, no problems found on my end.
This is of coarse the desktop with a basic wallpaper of choice, and themed icons, using nvoa launcher.
Here is what I meant about some stuff being touchwiz, and can't be changed, not as far as I know of anyways.
Notice the toggles are touchwiz. I'm ok with that though.
This is nova launchers widget drawer
And this is of coarse nova launchers app drawer.
Nothing special here, just typical nova launcher stuff. I just posted them to see the look is all.
This is the CM/AOSP camera.
I froze the Touchwiz camera and gallery and I use this apk instead.
Everything works good on it, and it has panorama, camera, camcorder, and also the photosphere, all of it works fine without lockups or force closes.
This is the CM/AOSP style gallery, also in the apk file above.
The camera and gallery are both in the one apk file.
This is the exDialer app I was referring to. This is the Contacts part of it.
and of coarse here is the dialer part of it
exDialer is ICS themed.
All in all I am very happy with the results.
That's something I'm always trying to achieve. The perfect set-up. I think I get there, but I never do. I don't think I ever will. It's great that you have it like you want it. Good job. It looks great.

Yeah, just keep plugging at it. I spent almost a month of endless trying roms, reflashing to stock, back and forth, because touchwiz just works, and I always seem to have 1: 3g LOS or 2: GPS lock on issues, with most every rom out there. I've tried a ton of them, and always end up reverying back to stock touchwiz. In the meanwhile I was always lookign how to make touchwiz more asop/cm/stock android like, and this is about the closest I could ever come.
I did however find a glitch with this. Not so much a glitch but a I guess you'd call it a hangup.......the touchwiz dialer can't be frozen, becasue somehow it corelates and connects with the dialing process, therefor you can't freeze it or else the dial part of the phone doesn't work, not even with a dialer.....it has to have the stock touchwiz dialer in tact before any dialer apps will work....my gues is the app calls on something from the rom in the dialer part instead of actually being a stand alone dialer.
That being said, useing shortcuts from apps or even stock android, it brings up the dialer of touchwiz, not the dialer app.
Even though the dialer part and contats part looks what the app shows, it's still calling on the dialing and connecting part of the rom.
My guess is it's part of the framework, and a lot of work would have to be done to get it to work like aosp or even use the aosp dialer instead of the stock touchwiz on touchwiz roms, that's why no one has delved into trying to make aosp stuff work on touchwiz, to much working with the framework to be worth the effort.......of coarse if I knew ANYTHING about programming I'd give it a tackle myself, but as much as I try, and I have tried for years to understand the programming end of it, it all just goes directly over my head.
So this is about the closest one can come without actually having aosp/stock android on their phones via touchwiz. The ONLY thing really left to tackle is the dialer/contact part of touchwiz, everything else is taken care of, so I'm hoping someone somewhere can find a resolve to using aosp dialer on touchwiz rom, but I don't hold much in that thought sadly........come all this way and have messaging, camera, and gallery all usable in touchwiz, and not the dialer part.
I've seen a TON of posts about using the aosp dialer in touchwiz, so I'm sure if anyone gets a fix on it or a working version of it for touchwiz roms, it would be a major downloaded file. I'd be on that wagon in a heart beat
Unfortunately I always end up back on TouchWiz as of late. It does just work. I don't have to flash certain kernels or mod to get it working the way it should.
Props to all the devs that do what they do.
I use hangouts for all my messaging, nova prime, and just the stock lock screen. And Google keyboard because Samsung and Swype suck! Also have action launcher pro.

Yeah I do the same, always end up on Touchwiz, simply because it just works correctly.
This way I have now is still GC01 touchwiz, just using apps and such to get the aosp look and feel, so it's not really aosp, although it still gives the impression of it.

Hey, that's not fair you are cheating! The fun part of the AOSP game on our device is to find out what doesn't work or stops working when you need it most!!
J/K glad you finally found something you like

Wow dude you put a lot of wok into this. I have a suggestion about the phone but it might brick your phone. Let me try it myself...
I'm glad you got it working ^•^
[Edit]
Never mind!
Didn't work at all. The only way to do it is to install a kit Kat phone dialer and hide the other dialer ^-^

Heh, thanks, yeah I searched hi and low to try and get things the aosp way. I'm still itching ta put on an aosp rom, but every time i do I always get gps lock-on issues and/or 3g los issues. I think I've tried every rom out there, and every one (for me) has either the gps lock-on or 3g los signal, most of them have the gps lock-on issue, as apposed to the 3g los though, while some have both and some jsut the 3g los.
The 3g los is weird for me though, it's not a full blown los, it's more a flicker affect...it flickers in and out, other times it just gets lost in limbo, while the 3g signal still shows it's connected.
I worked on this setup about an hour in all I think it was, looking and searching and trying things out. I already had the AIO tweak, so that part was done, the hard part was finding a messenger, dialer and camera. Wish I could get the aosp dialer to work in touchwiz, that's all that's left really, other than the settings. If someone could jsut get the aosp/cm dialer to work in touchwiz, so many people would be on cloud nine.
I keep hoping that dastin will fix the 3g los issue, but it hasn't happened yet, otherwise I'd be on the kitkat version of his.
I also get the 3g los issue in cm10.2 now as well as hood pope, so not sure what's going on. I tried beanstalk and couldn't get the gps to work right, again the lock-on issue, revolt had the gps issue as well, Slimbean had the 3g and gps issue I think it was....One other one that everything worked on, started with an S< and was VERY basic aosp, but got pulled because the sorce I think it was.
I am (paycheck providing) next week on Friday upgrading to an s3, so I'm hoping that the gps lock-on issue works better on it than it does this s2.
Weird how some s2's have the issue, and others don't.....same company, same model/make, one has it other does not.
I guess that's why it's kinda hard to track down, is because while some with the EXACT same phone say "I have no issues with this or that" others say "I have this issue, or that issue"
Everything is touchwiz, except for the parts that are CM/AOSP.
Gallery, Camera, Messaging are all aosp/cm, dialer+contacts is an app, lockscreen is an app, the rest is the launcher and touchwiz.

Seems odd but even on the same chips therein lie minute differences that make them unique. So your device will be different and it will work in some Roms better than other. It also does not help that this phone's users seem to crave cutting edge over stability (my self included). So although we have kit Kat and nightlies and unofficial builds for everything we actually have nothing as stable as touch whiz. Mostly because it's funner to add features than to fix and debug. I'm currently working on an honest to god vanilla build for this device and I want to make it stable over feature rich since I believe xposed does that. But my I internet has be so poor lately ? it'd take me weeks to sync the aosp source... It'd be easier if I had a laptop ? but oh well. That's life. Good luck with your gs3 I want to upgrade as well. Probably something nexus
