I have only ever changed my romm from 2.1 to 2.2 stock. Not sure what makes a custom rom so much better. What else can you physically do? Is there one that works with ota stock radio and froyo update (downgraded to get it). I am rooted on 2.2. I would like to see whats so cool about changing. Advice?

Try them out for yourself. Personally I like the fact that custom roms have verizon bloat removed and also seem the run more smoothly. Just remember to create a Nandroid backup of your stock rom so you can go back to it whenever you want.

Download ROM Manager and Titanium Back up... make a Backup of your ROM currently and try out another ROM! no harm in trying it. If you don't like it you can always go back to EXACTLY how you left it.
Anyways... every ROM has there "thing" and they usually start off as a vanilla or a sense based ROM. A ROM can be optimized to to be much snappier and even come with their own custom kernels. Don't forget that you can get better battery life! They all work with the Stock froyo radio... except maybe the Desire ROM. I think you need the latest radio leak for that one, but you can install it and mess with it... just no signal.
These devs pretty much can add, delete, and modify practically anything and everything and it seems to be ALWAYS better over stock.
Examples...
-My app drawer has added functionality now. I can uninstall apps straight from the app drawer and I can organize my apps in FOLDERS inside the app drawer so now it's not just a huge list of icons anymore.
-When adding apps to my homescreen I can change the naming convention or have no name at all!
-ROMs come with a lil "theme" to them so us users don't have to hassle with adding the mods our self.
-battery indicators
-notification drag down bar
-rosie can be different (vanilla, sense, expresso) with right button customed
-widgets can be themed to look more aesthetically pleasing
-a mix mash of vanilla and htc apps are used (best of both worlds)
-the Inc camera can be replaced with the EVO
-added Pre-Installed Apps for us (ex. wireless tether)
.....etc.
The list can go on and on. you can do a lot of this on your own but why when a dev has done it for you? and not only were they nice enough to create a nice ROM for us but they also went through beta testers to catch most of the bugs and glitches you would find if you did it yourself!
Anyways, download and flash a couple ROMs and you will never go back!
Thanks for the awesome response. I certainly would like folders in my app drawer so i didnt use a whole screen for folders. Thanks again

His rom sounds like uncommensense. Most roms dont actually do that. His does. Your launcher can also add alot of customization. Launcher pro allows you to elimanate names but you cant name folders where as open home allows you to.hes right check it out. Thats most of the fun.

correct... those were just examples. every rom has their "advantage" over others. the custom app drawer is definitely ROM specific.

I have been using Android on my TP2 quite well. I would like to get into customization or it though and would like to figure out how to install CyanogenMOD or some other form that allows me to direct edit the android system from within the system.
This would also help the Devs I think.

Now thats what im talkn about, pushing the limits of Android. lol im wondering the same myself. For the meanwhile u can try out either Home ++, PandaHome, Helix Launcher, or Zeam. ive tried all of those out with this AOSP build. I would recommend Zeam first then Home++ second. The Zeam UI is very customizable and i havent had a force close yet. so when i boot up android, i have the option of what UI i want to use The Standard AOSP Home, Home ++, or Zeam. also theres no slowdown when running these UI. try it out, u might like it. I got the Metamorph program but when i try to run it , it says im missing busybox. i dunno, i looked at processes and busybox is in here but not active or not being recognized. who knows..lol
im on the same note as u though, customization.
I've been trying this, unsuccessfully so far, since I got my TP2 about a month ago. It's not really documented anywhere so it's all trial and error and I haven't really found the time to work on it as much as I would like to. I was having some success mounting the data.img, pulling and pushing parts via ADB and editing the squash file. But now adb won't recognize my phone and I'm too lazy to fish out why. meh.
I noticed that Busybox was also in the file structure, just not activated. Which also means that the Android builds we have all been playing with are rooted.
I do agree with you though, Home++ or Zeam are the home screens of choice, At least until SPB MS 5 comes out. Did I see somewhere that one of the devs here on XDA made an android apk store for only XDA releases?

wow..i hope someone chimes in with that link..thatll be crazy ..thats cool as hell...only surf for xda apps for android wit ease. ive been using Zeam..it loads up fast and hardly any hiccups or FC's. Plus u can load any widget wit no problem. For some reason on Home ++ , certain large widgets will freeze up and wont let u put them in the trash bin at the bottom..lol and now i came across the same clock widget used in the sense that shows time and weather. so with zeam and that, ud think i had the sense version although im repping AOSP at the moment. I really wanna learn or find out how to either activate the busybox in this build or find a new, simple download. i researched some, but way too many steps and risky since this not an official rom. I b worried sometimes that messing around with the UI or hidden settings in android might mess up things on the next boot up..lmao but i already got MetaMorph, its juss waiting to be used once it recognizes busybox.
seems like a new sqsh file would have to be made by a developer mimicking cyanogen in order to "install" it

it would be like a custom sqsh file, kinda like a custom rom in a sense..lol that would be cool...there would have to be enuff interest in it plus be stable enuff to merge with this build. i know there has to be some kind of work around for the moment. there usually always is. ;-) i dont like the plain look of the Aosp build but its fast. so i try to find new ui or mods. which ive found out there is a ton of stuff u can do to this build thru apps juss like windows...my setup on this Aosp looks nuthn like it does when u first install it. it looks more like the Sense version. now i have it in fullscreen and that taskbar up top no longer there for that much more screen real estate..lol Zeam(ui app at the marketplace) has been wrkin pretty well for me.
Neopeek Cyanogen
Neopeek got Cyanogen working with ext2 partition
alternative
or you can use staysafe app in android to transform sqsh to ext2. it's like root, but without the ability to reboot.
So no customisations yet.
this.
Well, I have the SuperE CyanogenMod from Neopeek installed. It runs a little choppy, But FAST!! I was never able to get DATA working though. So I had to put her down until they figure out why.
I even tried a couple different zimage/modules packages for the rhodium. All but one resulted in the boot animation endlessly restarting.
I guess I still have to wait a bit.
i was wondering if having ADW on top of Sense UI takes up more memory and thus draining the battery more? i installed it two days ago, and i've noticed my battery is draining a bit quicker. for example.. with just stock Sense, if i charge fully and unplug overnight.. by the time i wake up (usual 6hrs of sleep).. it'll be down about 4%. the past two mornings with ADW, it drops about 10%. both times running Lou's Redemption Rom and both bump charged. is Sense still running in the background while ADW is also running?
Yes it is running you have to de-sensitize the ROM, and you'd have to ask lou about that im not famililar with that ROM
ok thanks.. lou mentioned he was planning working on a sense-less version. but what about if i install adw on a vanilla rom? would the vanilla launcher still be running also in the background?
So if I'm running skyraider but using launcher pro do I have to kill the Sensu UI process that's running, and will that conserve my battery?
if you clear defaults then unistall rosie.apk then htc sense will be off your phone
sorry didnt mean clear defaults, idk why i said that. i meant clear data. of course other little bits and pieces of sense will still be present running (ie bloatware), but the base ui will be gone, and hence it will not be running in the backround, which is pretty good for battery life in my opinion.
It will also break your HTC Facebook Contact sync though, so you'll have to go through your contacts manually with the Android Facebook App and sync them. Correct?

I believe this only happens if you remove Friendstream and its widget.
If you want to remove sense and its widgets the tainted vanilla version of my theme will do that automatically.

I see you're using LauncherPro with that rom. How easy would it be to uninstall that and put ADW on? Anything i should watch out for by doing that?
Also, this can be done with the stock/rooted/deodexed version posted by rmk40 or do i need to start with redemptive revolution? (saw that it was based off his rom)
One of the things that bugs me the most is getting a 6 bar signal meter on a stock froyo rom...I've beat my wife several times out of frustration.
i cant quite tell what your saying about the 6-bar thing, but there is a .zip file that can be used to revert to 4 bars. also, as for the theme, i would recommend just removing the apk's yourself if you can. the theme is for sure much quicker and more convenient, but theres no way it can be exactly what you want, and its not guarenteed to be stable with your rom since its fairly new. launcher pro can be easily uninstalled just like any app

Thanks for the reply. What i mean about the 6 bar meter is that a stock froyo rom comes with a 4 bar meter, most of the themed icon packs dont convert it to a 6 bar. I've seen a few threads that list off all the different apk's to uninstall to be senseless, but they are rather old and fear that some havoc could ensue with the newer frameworks out there.
its just a matter of whether or not you know what the apks do. if you dont know what one is, then chances are it is probably important. just by searching the /data/app and googleing names you should be able to get a relatively good idea of what you can safely delete
1. Install your desired launcher replacement.
2. Install this zip from rom manager or recovery.
3. Let it remove all of sense while keeping only the bare essentials.
4. Profit.

I have been running Uncommon Sense 1.1 for quite a while on my Incredible, and my absolute favorite aspect is the center Rose button being linked to a modified version of App Folders instead of the normal app drawer. Folder organization is pretty important for me due to a large quantity of apps.
Anyhow, I am now finding myself interested in changing ROMs (I used to test drive multiple ROMs a week, it's weird staying tied down). The problem is, I want the folder organization I've gotten used to mapped to Rosie.
The question is, how can I modify a ROM to achieve this? I have never modified a ROM before, and this sounds like a tough one to start with. My first inclination is to simply take the Rosie.apk from Uncommon Sense and plop it into a different ROM. But given than App Folders was modified in Uncommon Sense, would this work? And how would I do it? Or would I have better luck remapping Rosie to add the unmodified App Folders?

MynWArm is a great ROM.. I prefer stock, I deodexed the most up to date Nov. OTA update completely rooted and busyboxed and deodexed. Which means you can run the stock ROM and add Modifications that you enjoyed such as the rosie modification. in mynswarm rom he has an app called rosie settings which you can choose the left and right buttons makes it sooo easy. lemme hook u up wit some links. I am uploading these things for you so I hope you use it.
step one, make sure your rooted S-OFF
download this stock ROM I deodexed, it's completely stock doesnt have any name or anything like that.
here is the ROM http://androidforums.com/incredible...dexed-added-root-nov-update-any-interest.html
or direct download link - http://www.multiupload.com/2KS0OS60DR
then you need to Flash this file from recovery once the ROM is up and running.
I'm uploading just for you so, I hope you use this.
flash from recovery, http://www.multiupload.com/5FLXLMGJHO
this will take a good ten minutes so boot, so don't panic and pull the battery it'll work.
once you have this flashed and phone is on and running you'll see something famililar to myns warm, rosie wise, you wont be able to use any of the buttons except the middle for all apps, this is were you take this .apk -
this part is really important download this .apk
http://www.multiupload.com/W4IX7D2423
and install your favorite way, I used astro to do it. but once this is instaleld open the app and you can change the left and right buttons to whatever..
all credit goes to the creators or mynwarm I just prefer to do the themeing myself, this is just an amazing mod that lets you change the rosie shortcuts in an easy to use app.
Awesome, man. That will probably do pretty much everything I need. Or probably pretty damn close to it. I'll try it out tonight and let you know how it goes.

So right now I'm in dsixda's rom kitchen, trying to pull a few stock apps(phone, dialer, contacts, messaging) from a rooted stock rom(cr 2.13 OTA) to the nightly CM7. It's giving me process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly at boot and won't let me past. So I know that the OTA rom is froyo and CM is gingerbread, I'm assuming thats my problem. so that being said, first am I right? What do I need to do to make this work? and where can I get a stock gingerbread rom? can I simply drag and drop phone.apk, dialer.apk, etc. or is there more to it?

I don't think that will work. Espresso roms are sense, cm roms are not, they have different frameworks and such. First off, I'm PRETTY sure phone.apk is just the backend to sms/dialer/radio/etc., so you can leave that alone. Why do you want to move those apps over to cm7? Theming? Messaging and contacts I KNOW won't work because they require the tmobile framework resources that cm roms don't have, same with the dialer. You won't be able to move messaging either, since it has different coding from froyo to gingerbread. Contacts and dialer you MIGHT be able to move over if you ALSO move over the com.htc.resources.apk from /system/framework to the same location on the cm rom. You also might have to move the com.tmobile.framework.apk or something like that from /system/app to the same location on cm7 as well.
That may or may not work, it'll more likely just cause force closes everywhere since htc apps are very dependent on other apps and proprietary framework resources that stock android doesn't have.
I don't understand why you would want any of that. To each his own, but I think cyanogen has made all of that stuff better and simpler. The only thing he needs to add is the ability to end the call from the notification bar. I thought sense had a good idea there

I'm not knocking CM I do like it, it's just still buggy. For example in his contacts when entering a new a number with the keyboard the numbers are haywire and dont work, so you have to use the touchscreen. The main thing with the dialer is I miss the T9 speeddial, and messaging is a bit buggy as well, plus I like the old mms.apk ui better. For now I found out about dialer 1 on the market and will use that, but hopefully when it's all said and done things will be better on CM. Can anyone suggest a good messaging app from the market? contacts too maybe?

I have a question: why is it that every rom, every new OS all the icons stays the same? Why don't these companies or rom developers just create a whole new icon set? Yes, I know that I can install a launcher and get new icons but I like to just leave the phone just the way it is without installing a launcher and then installing sets of icons. Samsung is the same, KiKat is the same as way back to eclair. No difference. Its just the same ol' same ol' boring icons.
Its one of those, "if it ain't broke" things I guess. It seems to me a lot of folks think they nailed it back on ics, so they are sorta sticking to a lot of that and introducing changes a little at a time. Kk for example does have a different look in some areas such as the status bar and notification area. I also think that most significant changes will be made for different devices. The average person using their S3 for the past 2 years may not want all different icons when they update. They expect to only have to relearn what's what when getting a new device.
Thats a theory anyway...

You have done great things with the 4.3 update, the themes are freaking awesome to change the stock-flat-boring icons from TW. Personally, Im using the AOSP theme on the TW launcher, love that combo! Thanks for giving us taste of KK with your sprint port. Can wait for you to mess with the KK update we will be getting soon. Oh, and I have a request for your future KK rom, include the AOSP theme or the option to use the google launcher like you did on 4.3 :highfive::highfive::highfive:
Actually, I cannot take credit for all of that! If I am not mistaken you are referring to the StockMod rom right? Pretty much the entire rom is the work of @saranhai. All due credit goes to him for that one! And I am certain he will be hard at work on it too.
We just got wifi working, so if we can get screen rotation solved, it wouldn't surprise me if he rebased using my port!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I guess that makes sense. its just that, if you build a rom couldn't the icons be replaced to make it a bit different? I do like the flat samsung icons even though they still look the same, its just flat. I don't like using launchers any more because most of them need to install lots of widgets in order to complete the launcher and then when I install another rom then I have to do that all over again. Thats why I gave up on launchers.
Your roms are great and I love them. I guess what I'm trying to say is that most KK roms gets boring with the same look. I know that there's some that offer more features in settings, but they still look the same in general. I mean, they still using the same stock messaging icon since the beginning of Android, time for a change.
First, admittedly, KK has switched back to drab White over black icons which are not exactly appealing. So I will grant you that. Secondly When it comes to icons, you do have to edit the actual app APK in order to change or replace the icon. That is if you don't want to replace the laucher. There are inherent problems and a ton of time editing the APKs not to mention copyright issues.
If you are not wanting a Launcher change then you can go for either a lightweight launcher with theaming support (Such as Apex) and you can apply Themes. Otherwise you can go for De-Odexed Roms that are skinnable and highly customizable. AOKP (Unicorn) and Pacman come to mind.
Do know there are projects here on XDA such as Team Blackout who invert Google Apps and other apps.
You can't expect OEMs to design new icons every time they push a new update.. And from eclair to KK, I've had a Samsung eclair device and the icons look way better with kk, don't know what you mean that they look the same.. You can use an xposed module to change icon themes on any launcher even stock, gravity box or wanam modules to add mods and change a little appearance, there's flashable themes.. I don't see a reason to rant about this
