Some stock/motorola applications on htc hero - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Is there a way to get for example the normal text messaging or music apps to work on the htc hero? Or the motorola messaging app (with the facebook inbox and stuff) to work on it? i went through all the possible roms today and loved the motorola messaging app. i also loved the stock android one too. also if its possible to change the default phone app? and maybe the contacts? i love everything else about the phone. haha. i know some people will be like why did you get a hero? well i really like those apps alot and i love my hero for every other reason. i do know how to use adb and everything. i have tried removing the stock messaging app and putting the stock android one and it doesnt appear. anyone got an idea?

do you have the motorola apps? I would like to test these on Hero.

I have them and would gladly post some, but there is an .odex file to go along with it. if u want to deodexize i think tis called the file then ill gladly post them for you. i just don't fully understand how to do that. i do however have the stock android apps without the .odex in them and it still does not work on the hero after removing the defualt messaging app. anyone got an thoughts onto how to do this? it would be great to have a htc hero mixed with motoblur rom.

That would be awesome! I would atleast like the Happenings app/widget from blur. =)

Help for a friend...

My friend broke her G1 and got the Slide to replace it, she doesn't like the texting application. I'm sure theres a way to get rid of that or just preferably install stock android on the thing. I don't yet have any experience with Android (I will be getting the Droid X in a week) so I would love a bit of hand holding here.
As far as I understand it would would involve rooting the device and then installing a rom of normal android? Is this correct?
I would love if someone could actually walk me through the process or any tips, keep me in mind that once I do this for her she needs to be able to just use it forever after that. I don't wanna flash her phone and it ends up crashing a week late or something.
So can I be pointed in the right directions?
You would have to Root the Phone to Remove Built in Apps. BUT, Since this IS Android you are not bound to use the Default Messaging App. You can download some very good and Feature Rich Messaging apps from the Market. 2 Free ones that come to mind are Handcent (which I used to use before I got my Slide) and ChompSMS. You just have to uncheck the Recieved Notification box in the HTC one and you should be ok from there.
Before going through the trouble of rooting, has she tried any of the available messaging apps from the market yet?

Yea, per your suggestions I told her to just try installing another to see if she likes it.

[Q] Install stock apps from one phone to another?

Hey all...thanks for looking and possibly answering. Heres my question. The one and only thing I do not like about my Evo is the contacts app. and the dialer. I came over from the iphone and the best thing on it was the combination of the dialer and the contacts, call log and favorites all within one application. I was at best buy and noticed that on a Samsung fascinate the STOCK contacts app is exactly what I have been missing. I found a couple stock apk files for a samsung moment and fascinate from another forum and tried to install on my evo and they would not install. So..guess what my question is...why wont they install? Are they locked so you cant install on different phones? If yes...is there a way around this. Or simply...how do I get the stock contacts apk from a samsung to my Htc evo?
My Evo is rooted
PS...I have spent countless hours searching for this type of contacts app that has everything I want in the market..it does not exist, so please please dont reply look in the market for something similar. I am looking to put this exact stock samsung app on my Evo.
Thanks everyone!
Most of the time these "stock" apps are odexed files, I would suggest getting the system.img file from the phone/rom that has the dialer app you want and extract the odex file AND the apk file for the dialer then run it through an apk deodex script(I'm on a MacBook), then try to install it. Not promising this will work, but give it a shot and if it doesn't pan out politely ask a dev if they can port it, XDA is full of helpful and willing devs, as long as you aren't an ass about it like some people are, let me know if this helps!

+1..... I'd like to see this ported over. I had a Samsung Captivate and I miss my contacts app much better than what I have on Evo.

Anyone had luck on this? I just upgraded to s5 from s2 and want the stock memo widget from s2 installed onto the s5 as the s5 widget can't go smaller than 4x1.
You might have better luck asking in the Samsung forums. The most recent post prior to yours was over three years ago and it doesn't seem that anyone has an answer, that, and the OP was looking for a way to use an app from a non-HTC device on a HTC phone.

Porting phone.apk from stock to cyanogen

So right now I'm in dsixda's rom kitchen, trying to pull a few stock apps(phone, dialer, contacts, messaging) from a rooted stock rom(cr 2.13 OTA) to the nightly CM7. It's giving me process.com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly at boot and won't let me past. So I know that the OTA rom is froyo and CM is gingerbread, I'm assuming thats my problem. so that being said, first am I right? What do I need to do to make this work? and where can I get a stock gingerbread rom? can I simply drag and drop phone.apk, dialer.apk, etc. or is there more to it?

I don't think that will work. Espresso roms are sense, cm roms are not, they have different frameworks and such. First off, I'm PRETTY sure phone.apk is just the backend to sms/dialer/radio/etc., so you can leave that alone. Why do you want to move those apps over to cm7? Theming? Messaging and contacts I KNOW won't work because they require the tmobile framework resources that cm roms don't have, same with the dialer. You won't be able to move messaging either, since it has different coding from froyo to gingerbread. Contacts and dialer you MIGHT be able to move over if you ALSO move over the com.htc.resources.apk from /system/framework to the same location on the cm rom. You also might have to move the com.tmobile.framework.apk or something like that from /system/app to the same location on cm7 as well.
That may or may not work, it'll more likely just cause force closes everywhere since htc apps are very dependent on other apps and proprietary framework resources that stock android doesn't have.
I don't understand why you would want any of that. To each his own, but I think cyanogen has made all of that stuff better and simpler. The only thing he needs to add is the ability to end the call from the notification bar. I thought sense had a good idea there

I'm not knocking CM I do like it, it's just still buggy. For example in his contacts when entering a new a number with the keyboard the numbers are haywire and dont work, so you have to use the touchscreen. The main thing with the dialer is I miss the T9 speeddial, and messaging is a bit buggy as well, plus I like the old mms.apk ui better. For now I found out about dialer 1 on the market and will use that, but hopefully when it's all said and done things will be better on CM. Can anyone suggest a good messaging app from the market? contacts too maybe?

I use GoSMS. It's free, and you can theme it and such.
Alright. and almost forgot, the stock music player... any way of porting that? I really like the original widget better, and I miss controlling it from the lock screen. I want the old calendar back as well. thoughts?
i missed the dial by name from the SenseUI - this app is a GREAT replacement, you swipe from side to side to get to recent/favs/dial, and it's free: https://market.android.com/details?id=kz.mek.DialerOne

this is available in the later CM7 nightlies (30+) - you can hold the volume buttons to do prev/next, and you can even have the controls on the lock screen...

This is a replacement contacts called Phonebook 2.0. It's pretty cool.
Also, pretty much any of the widgets in sense are sense only ;p
Thanks guys. Yep figured out about the music player, thats good. Already using dialer one, I like it better actually. Now I'm missing the calendar. I really miss being able to see when stuff is coming up on the old widget. Any body got anything on that?

[q] understanding android ports?

Hey Guys:
Just trying to understand the app porting better.
Alot of great mods had been created from port of different apk's from other Android devices. I know there is a big difference between ROM that have Sense and no-sense ROMS. Yesterday I tried out the Droid X Messaging App referenced here. It work really well, but I had to uninstall it because of the Force Closing. I think the reason it doesn't work is because the Droid X does not have HTC Sense and its manufactured by Moto, so the app maybe coded differently.
But HTC has a few phones now running Android 2.3. So it would seem even though phones like the Nexus One (Which doesn't have Sense) should be almost coded along the same lines as a HTC phone running Sense, right? Yet alot of the apps don't run very well on Sense based ROMS. Now I know most people hate Sense, but I think its a useful app. I use Sense while I'm work and Launcher Pro on the weekends and evenings (yeah I know it sounds crazy. I know). But I really want to add a few ported 2.3 apps like messaging, etc.
Currently running SprintLovers Rom cause its the closet to stock. But I would like to mod it a bit.
So what I'm wondering is how come there aren't more ported apps available for Sense based Roms?

I could be wrong, but I think it's because of how much the framework differs. I've never tried the messaging app that you referenced, but is it all black? If you're looking for a messaging app that is all blacked out, with white font, the here is a modded one. It is the stock htc messaging app, but themed black, made by JsChirf.

Thanks, i was thinking of trying that out. Wasnt sure if it worked or not. I loved the way the pics came on the Droid X mms app.

No problem man. I have had no issues with that app at all, and have been using it for a good while now. MMS works fine with it, but it's the same as the stock app. I've never seen how they come through with the Droid x app.

[Q] Any way to disable smileys in SMS?

Graphical emoticons are driving me crazy, I usually disable them on all my devices and softwares. I am shocked that can't be done in the stock SMS app
Any way to disable them? Like deleting them from the respective APK?
Not only are they ugly, but for example "*" is translated into something... I don't even know what....
Yes, I hate them so much I'm even willing to go for another SMS app just because of this...
Sounds like your gonna need root.
sent from a Android device
I'm always on!
Yes, I do have root, I'm running Leedroid ROM, but the stock SMS app just has no way to disable those annoying ogre-like somethings...
Would be nice if HTC adds smileys pack to HTC hub... And at this moment I'm not wish to root my device, because too much software issue on it and stock roms comes faster than any custom
