While I am enjoying many things about Windows Phone 7 like the look, feel, general speed and the type of APPS that are appearing I am more than a little annoyed at just how dumb they have made it....
The options to tweak things are just so minimal its almost a joke. I am not speaking as a Power User and I think this OS should not be dumber than an Iphone. As it stands I will probably still need to carry a work and person phone as this will not do both.
Maybe everyone list sensible features that are missing from WP7 that we can collate and send to Microsoft as things that need to be fixed really soon.
Obviously if the non features listed are already available please says so...
1. Copy and Paste (coming soon)
2. Fast App Switching (probably coming soon)
3. First two lines of Text Messages show on notification bar even when screen is locked - BIG PRIVACY ISSUE!!!
4. Cannot Search Company Directory after setting up an Exchange Account (even Iphone can do this)
5. Outlook does not allow you to display email by NAME or SIZE and it does not appear you can create a SIGNATURE...

5. Go to your email, go to settings then tick use an email signature and change it from 'Sent from my Windows Phone'
As stated above... most of those features are coming and so hopefully by Jan 2010 we will see much improvement in the OS feature department.

7. Mainly HTC - We need a weather app with Active tile that will show location and weather and when you click it full blown HTC stuff
8. HTC Hubb needs to be updated to have active tile with big HTC clock rather then lady with glasses, in side there should be similar interface as stock HTC.
9. Task manager as some apps still stay open
10. A Wifi/Bluetooth/flightmode on/off widget that can be added to tiles
11. User made folders in apps screen as list gets way to long
12. Bluetooth picture and documents transfer
13. Active twitter tile so it can downloads tweats and let you know if there are new
14. Active messenger tile for obvious reason

Every phone I owned showed the last message content shortly after reception.
My Sony and Sony Ericsson dumb phones, my iPhone, both my Magic and Nexus. And now my future Trophy will.

My PERSONAL message can be viewed by other people sitting next to me for example!! So if I get a HOT TEXT from my wife or DIRTY JOKE from a mate.... its flashed up for a few seconds and is potentially embarrassing...

I'll third that.
I agree on the Weather App for HTC so that we can have it as a tile. And the Wifi/Airplane mode tile/shortcut on the desktop.
They also need to improve Bing Navigation. Or how about just allowing Google Search and Navigation onto the phone? hehehe... obviously that won't happen, but one can dream.
And please stop treating us like idiots. I actually rather like to be able to configure things and hate when I get patronized by companies that think that I cannot cope with too many buttons. hohum...

Dude, I have to say my girlfriends iPhone does this, my X1i does this (both when it was 6.1 and now 6.5) , the guy who sits behind me at work with a Desire does it. The notification usually disappears fairly quickly.
I sort of sympathise where your are coming from but, if someone at your office goes to read your notification on your phone if it is on your desk, your issue is with your colleague and you need to slap them upside their head and tell them to behave.....and to be honest, you'll probably forward that dirty joke onto them anyway and most probably let them know what your wife has in store for you when you get home just to make them jealous
Dude, I have to say with those other phones you can disable the text on the lock screen. Don't know if this is possible with the iPhone though.

It about Microsoft limiting choice to a stupid level or not thinking things through. In this case I don`t want personal or business information that is intended for me to be seen by someone else. I don`t think people are intentionally invading space really because it might be an innocent reaction of someone`s eyes being drawn to a message flashing on the screen of my phone.
I actually need my phone to be visible to react to missed calls etc... Not to show it off as someone suggested!! I don`t want to hide my phone every-time someone walks over to my desk to discuss something with me.
Those are really valid points.

Look - I'm not disagreeing with you about the fact that they should give us all the relevant options. I love to tinker and tinker with everything and I want the same options as you. My phone also sits on my desk in a desk stand in plain view so I can do just as you do. I have people constantly coming to my desk. If the phone goes off, it goes off but I continue dealing with the matter at hand and fix their attention to me not my phone - or they get a slap .

This just in.
I don't see a major problem but here's the news for you!
Sad. If I'm reading that right, C&P won't function in the phone app...for...like...copying a phone number from one area (maybe from a browser) to the new contact input fields.
Thank you, MS, for such a ...erm...experience...with WP7
Well, you are reading it wrong. The stuff is about third party applications. It doesn't say anything about native apps, so we don't know how it will function and where.
As regards third party apps, there's nothing wrong with using a control designed for text, for, er, displaying text. That's the way it should be. Not everything should be selectable, and it isn't selectable in all OSes including "big" Windows.

Well, depending on how the text is set up, you should be able to just tap a phone number in any built-in app and it will bring up the create contact section.
I read from the article that in 3rd party apps you'll be able to c&p only text from text boxes. So you can't copy twitter tweet right from the timeline.
So apparently you'll be able to c&p whatever you want from text boxes,
Plus probably other displayed content from native apps.
So I think not a huge problem here.

Was just, for the sake of minimizing comment, using that as an example, not as limited to. I'm more concerned with being about take information from emails or text messages or other content in a browser and being able to put it elsewhere when I need to.
I hope nobody is going to try to tell me I never have need for it...sheesh.

Anywhere you can select text, like you can in the browser, should work. Text messages (unless they change it) you would have to go through the motions of choosing Forward from the longpress menu then select the text from the text box; a bit long-winded but doable.
If Microsoft can add the function I would imagine DEVs could also make use of it in their apps. I could be wrong.
Yeah, they're talking about how devs can modify their text fields to utilize the C&P feature when they update their apps.
Hope they actually do this...
Thanks for the post. Been waiting for this.
This, while exactly what I expected after hearing what Mr. Kindel had to say, is a downer. Now, I don't use cut'n'paste that often on phones, but when I do it's almost exclusively from non-edit controls.
I would also have expected a way to copy'n'paste images considering they see Office as such a big thing, and TBH I quite often paste product images into OneNote on the computer - which syncs perfectly to the phone. Of course you're unable to edit the photo note on the phone, but just being able to cut'n'paste them would be great still.
TBQH this looks more like a half-assed implementation done quickly to get an update out the door.
If copy-n-paste is available at API level, there is nothing to stop app developers to implement whatever they like to support the feature directly.
The limitation of text box is only a limitation when the devs are too lazy to re-complile their code.
Of course, if such feature is not available at API level, that will be a true limitation. Personally, without multi-tasking support for 3rd party apps, copy-n-paste usage will still be quite limited.
Without the tradditional stylus and resistive touch screen, try to accurately select the text you want to copy on a capacitive screen using your fingers is nothing but frustration. I tried a few times on my Android phone and never worked for me. A pen and paper is much easier to do than copy-n-paste.

Have you tried a WP7 device? I know we can't currently select, but the "cursor" that is implemented at the moment (useful for adding/deleting stuff in texts) is pretty good.

I must say the virtual cursor on WP7 is pretty nicely implemented.
Android sucks compared to this and is a pain sometimes.
I guess you guys haven't tried 2.3 or any new samsung devices. Copy and paste, and the cursor is very finger friendly.
I have used cursor on Android 2.2. It is much better than 2.1 but still copy-n-paste largely dependent on app's implementation.
Capacity touch screens are inheritally inaccurate. Cursors make it less painful to use but can't eliminate that inaccuracy. You just got a tool to let you fine tune your selection. It still takes multiple tries to accomplish the job. And god forbid, if you want to select a paragrah out (multiple lines) of an email, that cursor won't be much help to you.

You already could select and hold and image to save it, then go to One Note and insert it.
I remember holding the.control button on WM devices and selecting/copying multiple items. Those were the days.
Not sure of the validity here, but WMPowerUser and WPCentral are both reporting that a user has a new update of the OS. One with the search icon for apps...

To me its crazy that there are people out there with leaked Mango builds and we don't know a single feature that they haven't announced. That's why I don't buy it at all.

That's a pretty retarded reason why not to buy. And to be honest, this is probably not Mango. Not even close. It's probably a progression of what we currently have, IF it's real, and just includes a tiny icon. We've seen Microsoft have different branches and those branches work on different features... I honestly don't think Mango is going to be the only update this year, and feel as though there will be 2-3 more minor ones along the way...
this is fake look at the color of the icons. And its blurry, you can see its photoshop.

I sure hope that search icon is for a global search instead of an application search. I really don't know why MS doesn't make the app list like the contacts list, or songs list, with click-able letters. That would seem like the most logical and theme-oriented solution to the absurd list of all apps that we have now

This.
Let me say that again. THIS.
I realize that early on Microsoft was going for a "new" paradigm where apps were a secondary benefit of using the phone, but that has obviously changed. With over 13000 apps already in the marketplace, and many more coming, a better app launching mechanism NEEDS to be implemented, and soon.
At the very least, there should be tappable letters to jump to a section, PLUS an app-specific search (to completely follow the model of the People hub). But even better would be to also provide the option to display apps in a 3-column format (with small labels beneath the icons). Even better still would be to implement a third page of the start screen that would allow me to pin favorite apps in a 3- or 4-column format (no live tile support needed, just app icons).
Oh, and the same changes should be made to the Games hub.
So, more like Android or IOS then?

I guess if that's the way you want to look at it, you can. It just seems kind of silly to me.
The fact that a feature or behavior might exist on Android or iOS doesn't make that feature better or worse. But if there is a feature that is commonly used, and it can be easily adapted to the metro interface, it makes no sense to me to go out of your way to avoid it, simply so you can call yourself "different". That would be like designing a car where you have to use your nose to activate the turn signals, just so you could claim that you are different from all of the other manufacturers.
I don't think that's what his implication is. Rather I believe he's saying something along the lines of, "but this is Windows Phone though and it has certain design and decisions the developers, at the time, thought were distinguishing and possibly efficient."
My words of course assume he's speaking to your wish for a 3 or 4 column grid format

thanks for putting up this thread, im looking for some differences as well.
I haven't upgraded yet to the leaked mango, it is tempting, but I`d rather wait for the official rom for my trophy.
from what I heard the 16bit color banding is still present, and no hidden wifi connectivity, and IE9 HTML5 performance is not yet optimized to 50fps due to the generic drivers used by the rom, instead of using the drivers specifically designed to the particular device, and this [maybe] why the 7720 is still in carrier/OEM testing.

By maps do you mean turn by turn navigation? I haven't really tried this in 7712 (btw im back to nodo 7392) all i know is that it can route locations and stuff, but not voice navigation.
Some says TBT is region dependent like Bing LS and Audio.
I dont know im not really seeing what the differnce is either they could have at least let you change alert tones you can set parameters for wifi connections other than that unless im missing it not even seeing what the update was for.
i haven't really seen anything different from beta 2

IE9 now earns 141 points (7712 - 140) in HTML5 Test
By maps i mean i couldnt even find a place here. Now I can
But no turn by turn..
I found the HTC Apps in Marketplace is now working.
only found "not for resale" disapears
Exiting Bing Vision with the back button no longer freezes for a second as it did in 7712. Now there is an animation of the Bing page sliding down.
People Hub is changed. Twitter integration is now completely functional, so is LinkedIn as mentioned. Contacts show up and auto link where able to. Instead of having to go to individual posts on different services, you can now click the post and pivot to see the replies on different services. Phone is faster. Keyboard bug is fixed where it wouldn't automatically capitalize the first word of texts in messaging hub. Lock screen delay is gone on my HD7. Battery calibration seems a little more accurate, at least for me. Before, if you hit the search button in the Phone to search contacts, but backed out, the bottom buttons wouldn't reappear, this is fixed. Bluetooth is more consistent for me, it doesn't drop, it did on the previous build, often. Tiles no longer "bleed" and flicked through lockscreen for me. I know I found more fixes and features, but this is all I remember off the top right now.

also switching orientation has a different effect especially the people tab
i updated to 7720 yesterday and i think the lock screen is a bit different, the time and data shows up like an smooth animation (fade in) effect. i dont know if this was in 7712???
The time and date fade out has been in place since NoDo
I've just noticed it being a little smoother and boot up showing "not for Resale" is gone. It broke my sideloading tho, so I guess that's something
better battery life and increase in overall performace
Did anyone with mango update can confirm if Arabic is now read correctly on IE9? RTL issue

Edit: Also the sun is not a reliable news source. They daily have android scare articles like the one you posted.

Magisk, yes. I looked through downloads (it's been months that it's been rooted and working properly) and I don't think I installed anything 'extra' with Magisk. I just imported the file, fixed it, flashed it.
I will have to recreate everything [I was going to when I got time] to remember all my steps. I will record them this time.
re: "Not a reliable news source." Yeah, nothing is a reliable news source. Do you have a different point? Do you dispute the findings of a news source that you have personally deemed not worthy to regard? What do you use to dispute this? Do you have a list of "your approved sources of news" so we don't have to do the back and forth? Do you not see how it is not productive to say something is not reliable and then just leave it at that? Either produce counterclaim from a source that you deem reliable, prove why they are more reliable or... ?
Edit: the shunning of females was a 'dry joke' that probably didn't translate well to someone that might be more concerned about that issue than I am?
