Friends dinc just wiped itself - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my friend has had a dinc for like two weeks.... he said his battery died completely so he charged it and took it off the charger and noticed that the homescreens were completely wiped clean... it didn't have the widgets that were on his screen when he first got his phone.. he's completely stock... he asked me but i don't have a dinc so i don't even know what would cause this...any insight?

I've had this happen twice since i got the phone last november. Just last week and when I got the phone and was really messing with it. For me though it seemed to be a half wipe of sorts. I had to restore the phone to stop it from acting weird after the battery completely died. I would love to know if this happens to anyone else

What do you mean, stock? No homescreens, no apps, or no data nor apps? I lost all my apps but my data was still there (eg google account) my 4th day

From what i got from him... his apps were still on his phone but his homescreens were completely blank... not even the widgets that are on the homescreen the first time you turn the phone on...

Maybe he applied the Clean Slate skin?

Moving apps to SD card will also remove widgets and/or apps from homescreens.

No he didn't do any of that... he's not one to mess with a phone really... just going to use it for calls, text, web browsing.... i don't think he did anything other than let the battery die...plug it in and took it off the charger went it was done charging

That sucks havent had that happen yet!

Sounds like when the battery died completely the HTC Sense data was wiped. The only reason I say that is because when I first got my inc I was going through all the settings and stuff and like a dumb ass I hit the clear data for HTC Sense. After that all my screens were blank and had to re add everything PITA!!

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.
Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.
had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

Phone decided to back itself up 2 hours...

I thought I felt abnormally rested this morning, only to find out that my phone was an hour behind therefore had backed up two hours instead of just one. Resetting the phone resolved the issue. I'm curious, did this happen to anyone else?
Mine did exactly the same thing. At 2 AM it went back to 1 AM, and I went to bed. When I got up, it had gone back another hour. I assume it did the "fall back" twice. A reboot fixed mine too.
Same here I woke up and was all messed up! My phone said 3:50 computer said 4:50 and alarm clock was 5:50
A reboot fixed the phone and a cup of coffee fixed my head, lol.

Mine did. So did my kids EVO and Wife's Optimus s. All Sprint so I think it was something on their side. Reboots fixed all.
Interesting. Mine was correct. Are all of you on stock phones? I ask because I am rooted using a custom ROM and kernel.
Mine did & when i checked the time settings it had changed itself to central time instead of eastern time. Like everyone else, a reboot fixed it. It must have something to do with the way sprint updated their network time or something.
Btw, I was rooted stock at the time.

New Lagging S3

ok, so today i picked up a brand new SGS3 on Telus, had it for like 4 hours it was working great and then put it down, when i went to use it later nothing, not turning on powering up, responding etc. So i took it back, they flat out exchanged it because it wasnt even 4 hours old. And the brand new S3 i have now is right out of the box, but its SOOOO laggy, like flipping between homescreens, coming off the water ripple slide lock its, its blatently obvious that its lagging. This is extremely annoying because i know what a fast one feels like after using it for a good 3 hours.
Whats going on here? I-747m

Maybe its touchwiz? Install a custom rom
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I'd try a battery pull then maybe a factory reset. That should speed it up, but if not then yeah flash a rom. Task650's AOKP is pretty zippy
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't flash anything. If that phone is lagging out of the box, take it back to get another replacement. If you flash a custom rom then find there is a hardware defect that is causing the lag, then you have to use triangle away, reflash, wipe.... Just bring the phone back and get what you paid for.
Disable 'power save' perhaps.
Mine lagged too. After downloading all my apps. Installed a custom ROM, did it again. Clearing my notifications fixed it for some reason. Weird

Stock T-Mobile S3 Starting to Run Bad

I'm about 3 months in and its already running terribly. Totally stock. I mean I can't be the only person that had these issues Haha. This is my 4th Android phone since the G1. I've rooted and tried tons of custom ROMs on all of them except this one so far. Every time whether its stock or a ROM I get to the couple week or couple month point (never more than 3 months) and boom... lag, freezing, reboots, more lag, more freezing.
Do I just suck at owning an Android phone? The only thing I can think of that I might be doing "wrong" is having lots of apps/games installed but what good is a smartphone if you can't have a lot of apps/games installed?
I have 3 active widgets. A live wallpaper but I've tried getting rid of it and things are no better. A 64gb SD card that's mostly empty. 1-2gb internal storage free at any given time (I try to go through and delete games I'm never gonna play at least once in a while).
Battery life is abysmal. Like i said tons of freezing. Sometimes getting from my home screen to the dialer can take like a solid 10 seconds. Chrome freezes up constantly where nothing will happen for like 10-15 seconds. And today I just started getting random reboots.
Any thoughts or suggestions. I'm gonna try that carbon app to backup my game save data soon so I can bother myself with a restore but its gonna be a real pain and I just really hope it makes a difference.
Thanks for your thoughts
Dave

Probably this belongs in q&a unless you were just ranting
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
A lemon huh? Do phones start working amazing then work horrible if theyre lemons? I might really consider it. Since I'm in Vegas I might as well wait and see if I can get the upcoming LTE version.
I suppose it was mostly a rant. I can move it when I get home (out on the phone now).
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I commiserate. I really do. But, with the 2 in my possession I've kept for a long time there just aren't issues like that.
The g1 was first smartphone, too.
If I recall buying a new battery and doing tune ups (new software/apps), clearing the cache, etc. helped back then. And probably would, now.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Since it's working fine for a time, I'm going to say it's a software issue. Do you have Lookout (the security app)? It's either a poorly coded app or a malicious one. Can we see some of those battery stats?
have you tried removing the games from your phone?
I don't have lookout. Should I check it out?
And like I said, removing my games kinda defeats the purpose of having this big awesome smartphone. Although I do delete games on a regular basis...
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Did you update from ICS to JB without wiping? My wife's s3 (bone stock) had the same stuff going on after updating. It was all resolved with a factory reset.
It could also be other things.. Such as a rogue app eating up your ram.
Removing the games isn't supposed to be permanent. Just to help troubleshoot. Still haven't seen your battery stats. And yes, get Lookout, it's free.
Not sure which info you need to see regarding battery but heres a screenshot. Gonna check out lookout now. Also keep in mind leg/freezing is definitely more the issue than battery. Battery is terrible lately but I can live with that since I have chargers in every room, car, work, and one of those recharger packs haha
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I think it's likely that the two are part of the same problem. Get Lookout and run a scan. Also, pick up the free version of GSam Battery Monitor and see if that can provide any clues.
If you aren't using Maps, disable it. Likes to eat battery when it shouldn't even be running. I use Titanium Backup to make an enable/disable widget for Maps and Google Play Music. GPS will work fine without Maps. Don't need it.
Also, do a battery pull. If the battery isn't seated properly, it can cause atrocious life. Didn't think that could happen... until I saw it happen.
So the main lookout app found no issues but the lookout ad detector found 4 collect location information and 11 collect network information apps. I'm gonna go through them tomorrow. Some from a quick look are big games I play daily which obviously I dont want to remove but I'm sure that some I can.

I do tend to use maps almost every day so not sure if I should disable it. Then again it does seem to run CONSTANTLY which i always found kinda ridiculous. Also I use play music every day but not the widget.
Had to do a battery pull earlier today when the device just shut off out of nowhere.
After looking at these ad network apps I'll check out that gsam battery monitor. Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone.

Idk you might be having too many apps and games lol idk.. Like others have said factory reset, also you may have a lot of apps that demand notifications that could greatly affect battery life such as Facebook etcc.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I agree. Might be a bad app. Save your data and do a factory reset like it was mentioned. Should clear issues right up. If not then take the next step and exchange it if possible.

Besides the apps and games do you get a lot of pic messages and text from many people? Did you leave the auto delete after so many pic messages and text on or did you turn it off?

No such issues on my phone, and a cheap $25-$30 hyperion battery will solve your battery woes.

Quick update. Woke up this morning and my phone was just off. Turned it back on, went to the bathroom, came back, it was off again. Got it back on and its running slow as hell but its on at least. This shutting off / rebooting stuff is new this week. Its terrible.
I guess im gonna try out carbon to back up my game data and see what I can do. It just really sucks if it turns out the issue is that a 16gb smart phone can't really store a lot of games. What a waste. Might as well carry an iPod touch and a flip phone Haha.
BTW I do get tons of text but I try to go in and clear those out every so often too. I never let my internal storage get below 1gb, 2 if I can help it.

Galaxy s3 massive battery drain (replaced battery)

Hello,
I know there are countless threads about the battery issues, but im having a hard time trying to find a solution for my problem.
My battery drain insanely fast, even on idle. I can barley get 5-6 hours on my battery. Standard usage, some Internet, texting etc. I have all the pre installed apps disabled, and have most apps I downloaded on manual sync.
A friend of mine had the same issue and replaced the battery and the phone is back to normal. I replaced the battery and still have the same issue.
It takes a long time to charge, sometimes I leave charging while the phone is off, and come back am hour later and it barley charged 3%.
Please I need some help, any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advanced.

How long have you had the phone and when did this start happening? Are you stock? If you're running a custom rom, when did you flash it (or any updates)?
I've had it since early September.
Same rom, using 4.1.1. Never been rooted.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
It sounds to me that software-wise your phone's battery should be working correctly, especially if you've disabled so many apps and never rooted. I think it's a defective battery. If you don't want to spend too much, you can buy 3rd party replacement batteries, but they probably won't have NFC.
I've already replaced the battery. I got the same battery my friend got when her s3 was having the same problem... Now her phone is fine and mines still isn't.

Ok. That's not good. Assuming you've tried factory resetting the phone and it still didn't do anything, I say go back to carrier store and get a replacement phone. Something obviously isn't right. Phone hasn't been out a year yet so it'll fall under manufacturer warranty. I had to get mine replaced a month ago for another issue.
