[Q] Boot loader after OTA - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Am looking to get into the bootloader by pressing the Power and Vol - buttons at boot time (fast boot disabled)...
This used to work as I do remember trying it once by curiosity.
Now it does not work anymore. The only thing that changed was the OTA received a few days ago.
adb reboot bootloader still works.
The reason I need this is that I am considering a custom ROM and need to make sure I can access the bootloader to minimize the risks of bricking in case something goes wrong.
Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

if you've done the OTA, your bootloader has been modified, do not worry though as when you downgrade, you do know 1.83.415.4 is not rootable right?, you'll be back with the original bootloader and everything should work fine

Thanks for the reply,
Actually I got the phone while on a business trip. And got the update while I was still on the trip. Did not have the time to read about anything till I got back home.
First time with an HTC Android and first time running stock ROM for this long... always assumed it would be as easy to tamper with as my poor old Galaxy S...
As long as you say I can downgrade, I am happy...
Will start researching...

Is you phone rooted and S-OFF? If not, just go to the link I gave you and follow condition 5. Skip step 2 (you will not need this). Skip step 6. That should get you the following files in your c:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder:
PB31IMG.zip (this is the 2.1 ROM)
rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (this is a root exploit - gives you temperary root)
mtd0.img (need to research this one)
flash_image (this flashes images)
Skip step 9. When you complete the remaining steps, you should be back to stock 2.1.

[Q] root issues...I'm stuck

I was at a friends last night going through the root process and after 3 hrs we got stuck. Part of the problems seem to stem from the fact that he is running windows 7 64 bit. none the less I'm hoping someone can help me out. currently my phone is rooted, cwm is installed, s-off I've done a titanium backup, but I can't get the update to "take". currently here's where I'm at:
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Baseband version: 1.00.03.04.06
Kernel version: 2.6.29-cc1c2268
htc-kernel(at sign)and18-2 #1
Build number: 1.22.605.2 CL161494 release-keys
Software number: 1.22.605.2
After getting to the point last night where the instructions (on this site) said either run the RUU or wait for the OTA I knew I'd get the nag to run the OTA in a few minutes (lol). Well when I ran it it just hung for 30-40 minutes with an exclamation point and the droid guy. Finally we popped the battery and tried running the RUU with no success. does the RUU have to be run from a cpu that has HTC sync?
Any thoughts on what I need to do next would be greatly appreciated! THX
Install the rom from the sd card through Recovery
Sorry real noob..what rom? Is this the same as the ruu?

[Q] Please have mercy on a noob trying to root an EVO

I want to root my EVO so I don't have to pay $30 for WiFi... this is what I get when I try to load PC36IMG.zip:
Main version is older. Update Fail
screenshot here: img16.imageshack.us/f/imag0511.jpg
Yes I already updated to 2.2 does this mean I can't root now?
Extremely confused at this point...please help. Thank you.
Here ya go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776477
One click root for evo
1. This should be in q&a
2. Welcome
3. Just use unrevoked its a program on ur computer that does it all for you.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
That's not true right now actually. Some of the Evo's that have been sold lately have a new H-BOOT image that hasn't been cracked yet. They are working on it though.
I'm guessing I'm one of those users with the new H-Boot image......
... since I followed the step by step method, and it doesn't seem to work. Considering I just got this phone today, I'm guessing I have the newer HBoot image on it. As for what happens, when I'm running the Unrevoked3 software, it gets through the recovery screen where you scroll down to HBoot USB then reboots back up the phone instead of writing the custom recovery.
Just in case this might help, my phone has the following software version:
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version:
2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.15-g0673ed
[email protected] #10
Build number:
3.30.651.2 CL271968 release-keys
Software number:
3.30.651.2
Browser:
WebKit 3.1
PRI Version:
1.77_003
PRL Version:
60671
Any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated.
I found the HBOOT version when I pulled the battery, then pressed the power button and Down volume key at the same time to bring up the bootloader. It's at the top of the white screen.
Here is the link to thread where a couple devs are working on this and trying to get it into Unrevoked.

[Q] How To Root

Hey guys
I am totally new to the android phones, and now having a DHD which has the following specs:
Android Ver. 2.2

Kernel Ver. 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
Build No. 1.32.405.6
Software No. 1.32.405.6
Now i looked at this link -
and didn't understand if i have to downgrade my DHD as well or is my version old enough so i can skip right ahead to the S-Off and ROOT?
can anyone tell me from what ver., and Ver. of what, do you have to perform downgrading?
thanks.
No need to downgrade.
Use this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
If u want an ENG bootloader (not needed for custom roms and root, but recommend):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
You can brick your phone, be careful!

how to root gingerbread
hi everybody,
forgive me if I' writing in the wrong place but for me has been enough difficult to get here..
I'm a rookie android user and I've been flying over the forums for the last three days, I'm really getting crazy.
Here are the specifics of my phone (branded):
android version 2.3.3
kernel version 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
software number 2.50.405.2
and here's the problem:
I have purchased an AR drone and I'm trying to get it connected so I visited the following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072281
seems that the first thing i need is a ROOTED Desire HD . I have tried every thing. Visionary (in different releases installed with ASTRO) seems not to be working. When i select Temproot now, after a while, the screen turns black. I waited for several minutes but nothing happened. So I needed to exit the program selecting "home". At that point it didn't allow me to rerun the app, I needed to reboot the phone to get it working again but no success.
So I tried GINGERBREAK 1.2 but after 25 minutes the rebooting process was still going on and I guessed that something was not working properly (as usual), so I stopped it. I think there is also a problem with Superuser (v 2.3.6.3), infact when I try to update it, it says "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary" (by the way...sorry for my inexperience, but what does "flash something" mean????).Anyway, my phone doesn't reboot on clockwork recovery.
Moreover, upon opening Rom manager (v4.3.2.4) it tells me that I must root my phone to get it working (of course) and that it cannot find Superuser at "system/bin/su" or "system/xbin/su". Guess what! I don't have such files on my phone.....
At this time i don't know what else I can do, I'm relly frustrated.
Can anyone help me out? keep in mind that if you have any kind of solution, I need some very "plain" explanation like if you were talking to your 5 years old son, please
Thanks
If we update with software number 2.50.405.2 can we root?
No, firmware > 2.37 cannot be rooted.
Thanks for the info, I guess I have to get rid of my AR Drone

[Q]Am I stuck at a dead end?

I'm noob
Hi everybody,
I'm a noob at doing things with phones and know what hardly most of the things going here are, phrases and software, flashing this, hacking that, etc. and just really need some help..
I'm on an HTC Desire and I really want to root my phone so I can get Runnymede AIO but I'm stuck at a dead end and can't even root my phone..
Software Information:
Android Version = 2.3.3
Baseband version = 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
Kernel version = 2.6.35.10-g3f43272
[email protected] #1
Tue Jun 14 21:11:23 CST 2011
Build number = 3.14.405.1 CL96875 release-keys
Software number = 3.14.405.1
Browser version = WebKit/533.1
I have tried unrevoked but it says it can't get root, firmware is too new. I've also tried downloading a stock HTC ROM from XDA for the Bravo RUU called:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865
But it gets so far as making my mobile restart etc. and get to a screen saying just "htc" in silver letters, and then stops working, my phone reboots and goes back to normal.
I'm really stuck and don't know what to do and I don't want to be stuck on android 2.3
Please can anybody help me? :\

have you looked here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
also there is a software called unlock root , that claims to root alot of android mobiles, so you may want to give it a go.
also there is the z4root app (apk) that you can install on your mobile and try to root using.
** the last thing (maybe it will help)
the Hts Desire is now listed at the htcDev website
that can be bootloader-unlocked (officially).
so this step may be a help in a way or another?!
good luck
good luck.
DON'T USE Htc official unlocker ( it will lock you on stock hboot-it is not like alpharev/revolutionary)
Use revolutionary please read this carefully
Do NOT downgrade under 2.x as we don't know what screen you have
Here you can find another guide, how to do it using revolutionary:
theunlockr.com/2011/08/02/how-to-gain-s-off-flash-a-custom-recovery-and-root-your-android-phone-using-the-revolutionary-method/
good luck
@OP
apologies for the confusion, but you're going to have to ignore virtually everything that stinger1 has posted...
that guide he linked to is unfortunately outdated. unrevoked will not work on 2.3.3
those apps probably don't work
the official method works, but is limiting and ultimately pointless when there are better ways
'revolutionary' is the only method that will work on 2.3.3
use this guide
read all the instructions, several times.
don't worry, we were all noobs. slow down, read, read again, try and understand what you're doing before you do it.
and search.
Thank you to both of you, This worked! Thank you so much!
