I want to root my EVO so I don't have to pay $30 for WiFi... this is what I get when I try to load PC36IMG.zip:
Main version is older. Update Fail
screenshot here: img16.imageshack.us/f/imag0511.jpg
Yes I already updated to 2.2 does this mean I can't root now?
Extremely confused at this point...please help. Thank you.

That's not true right now actually. Some of the Evo's that have been sold lately have a new H-BOOT image that hasn't been cracked yet. They are working on it though.
I'm guessing I'm one of those users with the new H-Boot image......
... since I followed the step by step method, and it doesn't seem to work. Considering I just got this phone today, I'm guessing I have the newer HBoot image on it. As for what happens, when I'm running the Unrevoked3 software, it gets through the recovery screen where you scroll down to HBoot USB then reboots back up the phone instead of writing the custom recovery.
Just in case this might help, my phone has the following software version:
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version:
2.15.00.09.01
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.15-g0673ed
[email protected] #10
Build number:
3.30.651.2 CL271968 release-keys
Software number:
3.30.651.2
Browser:
WebKit 3.1
PRI Version:
1.77_003
PRL Version:
60671
Any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated.
I found the HBOOT version when I pulled the battery, then pressed the power button and Down volume key at the same time to bring up the bootloader. It's at the top of the white screen.
Here is the link to thread where a couple devs are working on this and trying to get it into Unrevoked.

Issue:
I've followed Toastcfh's instructions to root in the past, and when I copy PC36IMG to the sdcard and go into recovery I get: Main main version is older.
I did some searching and saw most of the people that were getting that were on 2.2, but not me, I'm still on 2.1
I then saw a post to try unrevoked3 for the 'step one' part. When I tried to begin toastcfh's step 2 after unrevoked3 said 'done' the adb shell cat commands said 'cannot create /data/flash_image: permission denied'
I tried to reboot and run PC36IMG again, and got the same 'main version is older' error.
I don't know a whole lot about the technical programming side, but I have searched and can't find a resolution.
Please...help!
Uhm, all I could think of to do is use unrEVOked Forever, if you've done unrEVOked 3 that is.
no there is a root method for 1.47...give me a few

After I got stuck the first time, I tried that second link...thats where the unrevoked3 came in.
I'll try out the first method link in a couple days. I've got a couple busy days ahead of me. I'll just have to keep hitting no/cancel to all the 2.2 ota updates popping up on my phone...

Or you could turn off the automatic update check. Also, there are plenty of threads talking about how to get past the Main Version error.
The main version older problem resides in eng-PC36IMG.ZIP from my experience. Try whitslacks "How to Start Over" method or SteelH's Root Guide. Once you get a good eng-PC36IMG.ZIP, you're home free.
I don't know personally, but I have read that the Unrevoked3 + Unrevoked Forever works fine.

PRL woudn't do anything. The PRI is the same that all phones ship with. The only reason you would have anything older is if you flashed the eng build. There hasn't been a PRI update ever. So that's not the issue. I think he was trying to use an older root method, but for 1.47 you have to use the flash exploit or unrevoked, then use Forever or Toast's method.

ditto, simple root is the most effective/easiest way for 1.47.

Is you phone rooted and S-OFF? If not, just go to the link I gave you and follow condition 5. Skip step 2 (you will not need this). Skip step 6. That should get you the following files in your c:\android-sdk-windows\tools folder:
PB31IMG.zip (this is the 2.1 ROM)
rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (this is a root exploit - gives you temperary root)
mtd0.img (need to research this one)
flash_image (this flashes images)
Skip step 9. When you complete the remaining steps, you should be back to stock 2.1.
Please HELP I've read a bunch of ways to do things but I don't know witch way is the best way for my setup because some say if you're fully rooted do this if you're this then do that, it driving me crazy!
I would just like to go back to factory setting because I need to return the phone do to blown speakers. I'm a NEWBEE to all this so I don't know much. All I know is that I rooted my phone using unrevoked (I think it was unrevoked3) I was surprised I did it. Anyhow I only rooted the phone to use the free wireless tethering. Now I want to remove root but I don't know how, I tried it but didn't work, after reboot I was still rooted. I was thinking of just bringing it in like that, but the Superuser Permission widget is a dead giveaway I CAN'T find any way to remove it. So if anyone can be so kind to help me in ANYWAY it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks a bunch in advanced!
Here I give you all the info I think you might need to direct me in the right way.
PS: I did the mistake and never backed up anything before rooting. Just backed up using Rom Manager and Super Manager after the fact.

Okay, here's the guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
it outlines how to do it based on whether or not you used unrevoked to root.
However, since our phones are newer (and i assume you have an up to date rom), I'm going to upload the correct pc36img.zip file.
Make sure you follow the instructions, but use the pc36img i upload here, not the one he has, there's a PAIN IN THE ASS PROCESS to going back to PRI 1.40 and it's not worth the trouble. This way is easier.
By the way, you need to rename the attachment "PC36IMG.ZIP" (minus the quotes) for your bootloader to read it. When you see the guide, it'll all make sense.
Hit the thanks button if i've helped
**Edit**
the correct pc36img file is on page 39 of the guide's forum. it's too big for me to attach here
I recently lost my HTC EVO 4g which had been rooted. Obviously the new one came unrooted and i need to root it. I previously had done the one-click root using unrevoked forever in order to obtain Superuser permissions before flashing a custom rom. When i attempt to do this with my new EVO, after running unrevoked it runs until the point of "Searching for root, Ok to restart if this doesnt work" at which point it gets stuck. What do i do to make it continue in the process and root the phone?
I removed htc sync and have the universal android drivers in place
My phone is as follows:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version:
2.6.32.17-gee57fd

Software Number: 3.70.651.1
Browser Version: Webkit 3.1
PRI Version: 1.90_003
PRL Version: 01115
Any help would be greatly appreciated
EDIT: I accidently typed unrevoked forever. I meant to say that I used unrevoked 3 and that is when this problem occured

Im sorry, i dont know why i wrote unrevoked forever. I did use unrevoked 3 and this is what happened
I think I found the problem i didnt have the current unrevoked 3.3 and only had 3.21 i will try the new one and post back
I figured it our on my own with a little more research on my part. just wasn't using the most up to date version of unrevoked 3 so it wasn't compatible with the most recent OTA. I fixed it. Its rooted now. Thanks
Rooting with unrevoked after following all the instructions gives me an error saying the firmware is too new. Is it still possible to root my desire?

You might want to look at Revolutionary instead of Unrevoked,
here is a thread for more information:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443602
Using Unrevoked 3. 21? What's your hboot version? Can't recall off hand what version Unrevoked will do up to, but you might need to go Revolutionary route instead. Not sure if Bortak's guide says or not - do know its covered in All Things Root sticky on Androidforums Desire Root forum.

if you don't know how look at the S-OFF section on my guide.
just use revolutionary, it's the most up to date method to root & s-off your desire

The O2 desire that I have in front of me, uses the same software as you've quoted above. How did you get on? Did you happen to find an original RUU just in case? I can't seem to find the right one.
Doing a factory reset just b4 root solved it in my case, a long time ago.
