I'm very newbie in this.
Can I backup my desire with ubuntu 10.10, or is any way to do this?
If it's possible, how can I install custom rom (e.g. LeeDroid)?
(I don't want to install windows just because of this.)
The Desire can be rooted by unrEVOked3 using linux.

Yes, it's easy. You can do backups to your SD card right on the phone, no computer needed. You will need to read the instructions on how to boot into recovery once you root your phone. The you will see your backup options. To manually backup to your computer, mount the SD card over a USB connection, then copy files over. Or, use DropBox and backup wirelessly.

Side note: since you are using Ubuntu, the official HTC backup app won't run, it's for Windows. That's okay because you can set the phone to automatically backup itself this way (HTC.com), and then copy the backup to your Ubuntu One account. That way, even if you lose your phone AND computer, you still have a backup.
Just start with the tutorials online for the ROMs and follow the steps. It's too complicated to post them in response each time.

One thing you could do is sync your clockwork directory with ubuntu one
I've rooted my Desire using unrevoked3 on Ubuntu64.
Worked like a charm, and I didn't need to install no modded drivers, nothing!
Just connect the phone, run the app, and that's it!
(Don't forget usb-debug - on, and set the default connection as stated by unrevoked).
Don't worry - bsod won't occur.
I was under the impression that Linux was the best way to root your phone....I did mine in Fedora
Installing ROM is easy once you've rooted the phone. Download, copy to root folder of SD card and flash it from recovery (using either Clockworkmod or AmonRA)....

Help a friend accidently wiped her sd card how do i get it mounted to computer thru usb to transfer an old nandroid for her or a new rom? and is there anything else I need to do?
Just plug the phone via USB to a computer. It should recognize it automatically. If not, reboot into recovery, select the MS-USB option and wait for the drive icon to appear on your computer. Afterwards, transfer any file you want. As for the nandroid you mentioned, please make sure it is a backup made from her device ONLY! If you're transferring a backup made from a different EVO, and your friend decides to restore it on her device, she will be asking for trouble.

Yes I knew only to use one of her old ones couldnt get the phone comp to reconise the phone so i used an alternate sdcard and my phone to dl and flash a new rom then backup and restore her old nandroid.
before writing any new files on the card, I suggest that you try Recuva, I managed to recover all the files on my card when it got wiped a while ago (though I still don't know how it happened!).
i have readed this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396

???????????????????
???????????
??????

What's with the ton of question marks at the end?
First and foremost, that guide is applicable only if you are on Android 2.1 (Eclair). If your Wildfire has the official Froyo Update, it wont work anymore, in which case, read this post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
- No, Rooting wont affect anything you have. You can always get back to stock
- No, you need not connect your phone to your computer when using Titanium backup. It will create a backup on your SDCard
- The same holds for a Nandroid Backup. You need not connect your phone to your computer. It will create a backup on your SDCard
- No, Windows will do fine. Linux is not a necessity
- 'root of your sdcard' means just that. Simply paste the ROM's ZIP file to your SDCard. Do not place it any folders or subfolders on your SDCard.
- No, its not necessary to partition your SDCard to use and flash Custom ROMs
- Yes, 8GB is certainly more than sufficient. The bundled 2GB card does the job as well.
- There are two ways to repair your phone:
a) Perform a Nandroid Restore. (It can be found just below Nandroid Backup. When you take a backup, you will know it)
b) Flash an RUU. It's an EXE file containing the stock ROM Image. All RUU's can be found here:

Good Luck
Sorry I'm a bit of a noob with this stuff. What is S-off and how do I get my HTC One X to that state? (I'm trying to install Android Revolution HD)
My second question is, using clockworkmod, am I able to easily switch between ROMs (eg stock/ARHD)? Cheers
S-off means that the Security off the bootloader is unlocked
u can do this tru HTCdev
Select other supported models and follow the steps.
Some warranty can be void this way so make the choice
At the moment CWM is not ready for us yet
But Paulobrien is working hard and has a interim Solution
Thanks, ARHD's saying I need '4EXT Touch Recovery' is that different to the Interim ClockworkMod Touch you've linked me to? Thanks
Don't worry about the 4EXT recovery, AFAIK it's not available yet for the One X (unless I've missed an announcement). Use paulobrien's custom recovery instead.
The reference to 4EXT is probably just text copied from one of Mike's other threads, I'm sure he'll tidy things up soon. Or maybe Max will release 4EXT Recovery for the One X and he won't need to.
Thanks again!
I've unlocked my device and have flashed interim's clockworkmod so I'm on step 3 installing the firmware package from the link, only I don't seem to have a cid (see attached) - what should I do?
It also says to place the .zip files on the root of the SD card - what directory should I put it in on the One X?

Where you place the .zip of the rom is irrelevant as long as its on the sdcard partition you can navigate to it through the interim clockworkmod.
As for the firmware package thats not a question i can answer definitively. As i had a higher firmware number installed on the factory rom, i didnt install the reccomended package (after asking the question in the ARHD thread). All works fine for me
Just remember to take a back up of the stock rom before you start trying to flash roms.

The SD card partition is what you see when you open a file explorer on your device, or when you open it as a disk drive on a computer.
Easiest thing to do is to paste the ZIP file in question into the root directory of your device, i.e. just open the device on a computer and paste without navigating any further. It should contain a lot of folders and also a PDF of the user manual.
Then, when you're going to "install" the ZIP from "sd card" via recovery, it'll be at the bottom of the list -- no further navigation required.

All good mate.
To create a backup boot into clockworkmod then go to backup/restore > backup. This will create a nandroid backup which is saved in the clockwork mod folder in the sdcard partition.
Might not be exactly that wording but thats the jist of it.
Hi, I'm new to rooting and to this forum. I have a HTC Desire that I am using that I rooted yesterday. The process was quite simple and I installed the Evervolv 3.0.0p10 - Jelly bean for HTC Desire yesterday and everything seems to run smoothly (apart from the camera but that's because its still pre-alpha) but when a new version comes out I don't know how to flash the next update without losing all my apps and game saves. I understand that you need to go into boot into Recovery mode then go into Clockwork Recovery but how do I backup all my apps? What I don't want is to restore to an older ROM with the apps on but what I do hope will work is somehow I can get the apps back on the new version of the ROM. Can someone help a noob here on how to do so please
Thanks!
Use titanium backup or mybackup from playstore to backup apps+data then save the backup on ur computer.

also, before you flash any rom update, or any flashable zip, make sure you nandroid backup!
in clockworkmod: backup and restore -> backup
nandroid backup saves your phone's EXACT state: apps, contacts, texts, homescreens everything, so you have a safe point to restore to in case something goes wrong.
these are stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup, you can also move these on PC for safekeeping (plus they start to take up a lot of space).

Thanks I did install Titanium backup and I redid backups for everything (I think) because it says "1 backup" underneath all the apps. What I don't understand is how I can save it onto the computer and how to restore everything, such as the apps onto the new ROM I have flashed onto the phone?

Plug ur phone into computer, select connect as disk drive and u can browse through ur files on sdcard and just copy the backup to computer or if u have a card reader, use that and do the same. To restore the apps on new rom just put the backup back on ur sdcard and download titanium backup from playstore then u can restore them. Never used titanium backup but im sure its pretty straight forward. Maybe eddiehk6 will give better instructions.

Okay I understand, thanks a lot for the help!
So I'm looking to do some playing around with my G3, it's a Sprint Variant, has been stump rooted; nothing else. I run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, have installed adb/fastboot, and it sees the device as being connected.
I can't shell / dd the twrp file as it mentions being able to do manually in the thread from my PC (under terminal); denies me permission, despite the file being in the main directory of the Internal storage (or does it need to be in the physical 'root' directory? This wasn't clear for me on the Bump! TWRP Thread).
I did however pass the hiddenmenu tag for disabling ota updates directly through terminal emulator on the device itself, so I do have access to be able to do it that way.
Long and short, can I make a back up of everything as it is now on the device (firmware, radio, baseband and all associated files)? Without having to get them here on xda?
I will read instructions; I've gotten this far by reading, I just can't find the information I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance, hopefully I can get some solid instructions.
If you have the proper twrp image for your phone loaded at the root of your internal SD, you can install it using the terminal emulator app right on your g3.
You just input the three command lines starting with the "su" line.
After you do that, you can launch into recovery (I like the Quick Boot app for that), then use twrp to do a backup. In my case I reformatted my external SD card to fat32, from twrp, so that card would be usable by both normal android and twrp (backup the external SD to your PC or a flash drive before reformatting, then copy the files back in after it is done)
There is one last chunk of stuff to backup. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2907329
Good luck!

I already dd'ed the EFS files in question through terminal emulator, and I'm sure I can install TWRP just fine through there as well.
To clear this up, I don't want to install TWRP right away. I want to back up my device's recovery files, baseband, radio, and all the vitals, and basically make a personal .tot or .kdz for it to restore to (that I don't have to source online) under, say, the flashtool.
Hopefully this helps clear this up and someone has the answers I'm really looking for.
