What's with the ton of question marks at the end?
First and foremost, that guide is applicable only if you are on Android 2.1 (Eclair). If your Wildfire has the official Froyo Update, it wont work anymore, in which case, read this post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
- No, Rooting wont affect anything you have. You can always get back to stock
- No, you need not connect your phone to your computer when using Titanium backup. It will create a backup on your SDCard
- The same holds for a Nandroid Backup. You need not connect your phone to your computer. It will create a backup on your SDCard
- No, Windows will do fine. Linux is not a necessity
- 'root of your sdcard' means just that. Simply paste the ROM's ZIP file to your SDCard. Do not place it any folders or subfolders on your SDCard.
- No, its not necessary to partition your SDCard to use and flash Custom ROMs
- Yes, 8GB is certainly more than sufficient. The bundled 2GB card does the job as well.
- There are two ways to repair your phone:
a) Perform a Nandroid Restore. (It can be found just below Nandroid Backup. When you take a backup, you will know it)
b) Flash an RUU. It's an EXE file containing the stock ROM Image. All RUU's can be found here:

[Q] Ubuntu 10.10 & HTC Desire

I'm very newbie in this.
Can I backup my desire with ubuntu 10.10, or is any way to do this?
If it's possible, how can I install custom rom (e.g. LeeDroid)?
(I don't want to install windows just because of this.)
The Desire can be rooted by unrEVOked3 using linux.

Yes, it's easy. You can do backups to your SD card right on the phone, no computer needed. You will need to read the instructions on how to boot into recovery once you root your phone. The you will see your backup options. To manually backup to your computer, mount the SD card over a USB connection, then copy files over. Or, use DropBox and backup wirelessly.

Side note: since you are using Ubuntu, the official HTC backup app won't run, it's for Windows. That's okay because you can set the phone to automatically backup itself this way (HTC.com), and then copy the backup to your Ubuntu One account. That way, even if you lose your phone AND computer, you still have a backup.
Just start with the tutorials online for the ROMs and follow the steps. It's too complicated to post them in response each time.

One thing you could do is sync your clockwork directory with ubuntu one
I've rooted my Desire using unrevoked3 on Ubuntu64.
Worked like a charm, and I didn't need to install no modded drivers, nothing!
Just connect the phone, run the app, and that's it!
(Don't forget usb-debug - on, and set the default connection as stated by unrevoked).
Don't worry - bsod won't occur.
I was under the impression that Linux was the best way to root your phone....I did mine in Fedora
Installing ROM is easy once you've rooted the phone. Download, copy to root folder of SD card and flash it from recovery (using either Clockworkmod or AmonRA)....

S-Off?

Sorry I'm a bit of a noob with this stuff. What is S-off and how do I get my HTC One X to that state? (I'm trying to install Android Revolution HD)
My second question is, using clockworkmod, am I able to easily switch between ROMs (eg stock/ARHD)? Cheers
S-off means that the Security off the bootloader is unlocked
u can do this tru HTCdev
Select other supported models and follow the steps.
Some warranty can be void this way so make the choice
At the moment CWM is not ready for us yet
But Paulobrien is working hard and has a interim Solution
Thanks, ARHD's saying I need '4EXT Touch Recovery' is that different to the Interim ClockworkMod Touch you've linked me to? Thanks
Don't worry about the 4EXT recovery, AFAIK it's not available yet for the One X (unless I've missed an announcement). Use paulobrien's custom recovery instead.
The reference to 4EXT is probably just text copied from one of Mike's other threads, I'm sure he'll tidy things up soon. Or maybe Max will release 4EXT Recovery for the One X and he won't need to.
Thanks again!
I've unlocked my device and have flashed interim's clockworkmod so I'm on step 3 installing the firmware package from the link, only I don't seem to have a cid (see attached) - what should I do?
It also says to place the .zip files on the root of the SD card - what directory should I put it in on the One X?

Where you place the .zip of the rom is irrelevant as long as its on the sdcard partition you can navigate to it through the interim clockworkmod.
As for the firmware package thats not a question i can answer definitively. As i had a higher firmware number installed on the factory rom, i didnt install the reccomended package (after asking the question in the ARHD thread). All works fine for me
Just remember to take a back up of the stock rom before you start trying to flash roms.

Thanks but where is the SD card partition, I don't see it in the root directory? Also how exactly do I make a backup? Thank you!!
Connect the usb cable..
Use connect drive...
open your windows file explorer ., there will be a new drive HTC Storage
Place it there

The SD card partition is what you see when you open a file explorer on your device, or when you open it as a disk drive on a computer.
Easiest thing to do is to paste the ZIP file in question into the root directory of your device, i.e. just open the device on a computer and paste without navigating any further. It should contain a lot of folders and also a PDF of the user manual.
Then, when you're going to "install" the ZIP from "sd card" via recovery, it'll be at the bottom of the list -- no further navigation required.

All good mate.
To create a backup boot into clockworkmod then go to backup/restore > backup. This will create a nandroid backup which is saved in the clockwork mod folder in the sdcard partition.
Might not be exactly that wording but thats the jist of it.

[Q] Access internal storage from bootloader?

This is another one of those "noob help pls!!!1" threads, and I am incredibly sorry for making that dreadful pile bigger.
That said, allow me to explain my situation:
Flashed from ARHD 2.0 to ARHD 3.0 without reverting to stock rom for OTA update. My HTC ONE X is stuck at boot screen (I did flash boot.img via flashboot).
I'm trying to restore one of the nandroid backups, but I've renamed the backup folder to something like, "ARHD 2.0 w LC_MOD2.75". I read that apparently the folder can't have spaces in it, or it will fail the md5 check.
Unfortunately, I can't find a means to rename the folder from the bootloader screen or Clockworkmod Recovery. SO: Is it possible access the internal storage without actually booting the device?
I'm doing this because I want to (hopefully) keep my data intact as well.
Not at the moment I don't think we can mount USB storage via recovery as of yet. Try flashing your original RUU from the dev section that may help.
From CWM thread:
Code:
Cant mount USB in recovery
No charging while in recovery
Cant flash from Rom Manager
Will doing that format the Virtual SD card as well?
UPDATE: SDCARD DATA INTACT.
I'm using a Singaporean HTC ONE X, in case anyone is wondering: Asia_WWE RUU
UBER THANKS nikzDHD!

[Q] nandroid backup doubts

can someone help me?
the wonder is my first android and I wanted to learn while before hacking on it ...
last night I did the root and installed ClockworkMod 6.0.1.2 to make a nandroid before flashing a ICS rom.
but I have come some doubts:
1) the nandroid with clockworkmod is done either on internal mem on external sd right? I tried with the internal memory and I did a backup of 17MB ... I have copied to the PC the folder ClockworkMod always 17MB: they seemed to me just a few for a nandroid backup... I did it again ... the same ...
2) then I added the external sd and I deleted the two previous backups from internal mem and redid the backup to external sd ... the process took about twenty minutes (slower then before), and in fact has made a backup of 790mb
3) I try to copy the backup on the PC with the phone attached but it don't work .... I removed the SD card and copied the folder on pc with win7: I did not copy some files because they are "too long" (???)... then I tried to copy it on a pc with ubuntu and makes the copy but when the transfer is finished tells me that the number of files copied is right but instead of 790mb is only 725mb: I need to trust this backup? ?? better to delete and redo everything? I do not want to flash something and do not have a working nandroid...
another question: when I flash a rom and do ALL wipe the sd external is reset? no I think, right? and to put on the contacts and messages and the settings I use those saved using kies or do I need to do a better titanium backup or save contacts synced to gmail?
sorry for the many questions but as I'm a true noob and before I do damage I want to have in mind what I was doing
I'm waiting your reply before flash a rom... thanks

First thing: Why do you need to copy the backup to your PC? I can certainly assure you that the backup is working fine. Just leave your SD card within your device upon backing up. And just leave it there. If you ever really wanted to copy the backup to your pc, well don't get the file size(s) wrong. They will certainly be different since the systems you are trying to copy the files to uses a different file system. So it's normal for them to have different file sizes. To add to that, the CWM uses generated MD5 to confirm that the backup (it's related files) are correct before it will restore a certain backup. If something is wrong or the backup got corrupted, CWM will not continue in restoring it.
Second: when you flash, your personal files in your sd card will remain intact. Flashing (may) be only wiping an SD-EXT if you created such partition in your card since apps uses this. So don't worry.
For most customized ROM, I'm afraid components regarding the communication of your device and Kies won't be integrated since devs prefer your system to be our of bloats as possible. So upon flashing a custom ROM, you might not be able to use Kies anymore. In flashing, internal data such as contacts, messages, APN, wifi(s), etc. will be erased as the system will be erased. So;
For your contacts: Sync it with Google or export them to our SD for later import.
For your APN and messages: There's an app in the Play Store that allows you to backup and restore them.
The titanium backup is a very good tool too. Use it.

thanks a lot bbmadzky, I understand what you say
I wanna copy backup in my pc to have a secure place where put the first nandroid of my wonder with stock rom as I have bougth it external sd can be corrupted or deleted and have a genuine nandroid of my phone I think is better
just do another backup to ha the certainty to have a good backup and now can I try to flash my first costomized rom
thanks a lot dude
ciao
It's been a pleasure in helping you with your doubt. Happy flashing and don't ever forget to do a nandroid backup.

This reply may be too late in coming...but I'll post it anyway. First, the size of your created nandroid....17mb.....WAY too small....the size of the backup I made was +/-800mb.
Second....if you REALLY have to copy it to a PC, zip it with minimal compression first....I found from personal experience that it copies MUCH more easily and safely....
Finally, keeping personal data (contacts, SMS, lists of installed apps [not including app data]) safe. You can install apps that will make data files of your texts and installed apps that can be accessed after flashing a custom ROM to enable recovery and re installation, and for your contacts (if you store them on the phone instead of the sim card) you go to your contacts, press the menu button and select import/export, then export to SD card. If you use these apps (appbak and SMS backup and restore) and the export to SD card function on your phone, you will find that data files have been created by using them.....these data files MUST be moved to your EXTERNAL SD card BEFORE flashing your custom ROM. They will be perfectly safe there as long as you haven't played around with the storage configurations on your phone....which I don't believe is possible with a stock ROM anyway....
Good luck and happy flashing
Hope this has helped....if it has, click thanks

not so late dude
the problem is... I don't have a working backup still now!
I just flased cm9 and RemICS 1.5 rom and every time I tried to make a backup before flashing...
the first time I have the above doubt (as you can read above)
the second time I've tried to install CWM 6.0.1.0 instead 6.0.1.2 and the backup process is finish well (or it was what I belive ) then when I try to comeback to stock version an error has occurred in restore and I must re-do a flash with stock firmware because the SGW was freezed.
I don't know if there are problems with installation of CWM, the release of CWM (now I try with a CWM 5.5.0.4), with the type of backup files (n CWM6 you can choose the type of format file do you have from the backup process) but now before to flash another rom I want to have a WORKING nandroid!
thanks for your reply and your suggests too... maybe make I something wrong but I follow the tools on web and these are simple... maybe is only bad luck... I retry
Dude...if you read my thread here.......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846449
And specifically the replies posted by IvanKurnia, you'll find the links (and installation method) for the version of CWM that I'm using.....with success. When you make your nandroid backup, you need to make sure you have enough space for it to complete as you don't get any warning about lack of memory....the backup process will simply stop....and unless you know what to look for, you may not realise.
I'm not totally sure if flashing different versions of CWM on top of each other will cause instability or not....maybe somebody else can answer that one.....
I'd advise getting as much info as you can about EVERYTHING! before you make any more modifications to your phone.....read as many threads and ask as many questions as it takes.....most members of this community will be happy to help (though there are one or two who have a superiority complex...lol)....it's better to ask a hundred questions and get it right, than to ask none and turn your phone into an expensive paperweight.......
CM9...I don't HAVE to.....I just.....can..
first of all: I wanted to write mate not dude sorry for my bad english...
thanks keithross
I read your thread and all the replies in it...
yes the metheod for flashing the CWM is the same I knew. I prefer to flash it whit odin.
I don't think I have problems flashing other versione because I must do a replace of stock firmware before: I set the cell in the status as new... then I reflash on it the CWM.
the only thing I don't have made is to set on USB debugging ON... uhmmm maybe is this the problem?
I try now to flash, make a nandroid, try recovery by nandroid to understand if nandroid works! If not... I try to instal CWM witn the method has showed by ivankurnia
for free space I have enough space in my SD ext card (3gb ca.) and not so many app installed... and yes I use often forum and I think these are the greatest resource on the web xda for android is "the bible" I think so!
p.s. your thread has so many informations I need...
Hi Bennymax, I found ivankurnias method the easiest to use....I'd tried ODIN without success....but successfully installed CWM on the first try with the terminal emulator/busybox method.....others have successfully used this method too. I do still stand by my concerns about flashing different versions of CWM on top of each other as I've come to believe that the recovery partition is separate to the ROM partition and that changing the ROM partition has no effect on the contents of the recovery partition. I hope I'm wrong about that, and that the issues you are having with nandroid backup and restore are as you say bad luck....but I'm not convinced.....having said that, I'm not a developer, and I could be wrong. I feel that it is something that needs researching just in case the luck you've had is not bad, but good in so far as you haven't bricked your phone yet......
Anyway, good luck however you decide to proceed....

Please help a beginner with Recovery and Cryogen

Hey guys,
I am a total noob at all this rooting stuff. I have had my S3 for several years now and am still pretty happy with it, but I like technical work and decided to get the most out of my phone. I have been trying to figure some things out and have read alot of posts but still a little hazy. The best way to avoid hours of fixing something you broke out of ignorance? Double check with the pros.
Android version 4.3
So here is what I have done so far: I made a samsung smart switch backup of my phone then followed this posts instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2793071 . Worked great. I am all rooted, I have superSU installed. Everything went fine. because it sounded like a good utility I downloaded ROM manager from the playstore (from this post's recommendation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2135588 . I set up and ran the clockwork recovery app, it did a weird boot and screen and proceeded to run a backup. I cannot find that backup file but it says it made one and when i tired its remote backup download server (which is only for premium users) it showed a backup even through I could not download it. Then I downloaded titanium backup * root from the playstore and I had it backup system and user apps. After failing to find my titanium back up (it made 306 backups? ok......) I created a new folder in my SD card and routed the backups there. I open that folder and found a ton of files with GZ extension. I copied that whole folder (1.4gb) onto my computer.
That is what I have do to this point. I want to use the Cryogen ROM so I went to their site and found my phone model (https://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/D2tmo_Info). That page has a big warning about incompatible ICS Bootloader and tells me to update my firmware. I would be fine with running slightly older version of Cryogen, pre 10.1 but A) security concerns and B) I dont think what they have posted are the stable releases and C) no recovery (i have no idea what that is supposed to do,. recover what?) At that point I stopped and did some research but came away not at all enlightened. A lot of posts talk about other utilities such as adb, Odin, and so on but I am clueless. If I haven't mentioned a program or an action assume I dont have it or have not done it.
Also, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2135588 mentions booting into recovery mode and making two backups (one to each sd card and phone) I want to be as safe as possible but all these backups are eating up alot of space. Do they all need to be stored on my phone at all times? Which ones can I copy to my computer for storage and delete from my phone?
Things I want to do:
--create good backups
--transfer as many backups as possible to my computer
-- install Cryogen ROM
What are the next few steps?
My current thinking is to boot into recovery mode and create backups as specified in the noobs guide. Transfer those backups to my computer. Then use ROM manager to install cryogen v12.1. (firmware update? need? how?). I am not taking any further action until I hear back from this thread, but I just wanted to explain my current plan of action which is probably incorrect.
I really appreciate any help you fine folks can give.
Edit: after doing all the titanium backups stuff i talked about I returned to home page... my background has changed. WTH?
Edit2: I went ahead and ran two backups in clockwork recovery mode, one to sdcard and one to sdcard1 ( I assume to phone card and external card). I found a bunch of files in the SD card's clockwork file. My device and card are running low on space, I need to get the backups onto my comp. Holding off until I find out if I need to keep a backup on the device at all times.
Edit 3: I keep getting a pop up that says t-mobile account app has stopped working.
In order to run the latest CM ROM for the T999, recommend installing the latest bootloader and modem on the phone. I recommend using the latest CM ROMs to help ensure that the phone is running the latest security patches.
To determine the baseband and bootloader on the phone, download and install the Samsung Phone Info app from the play store and run it.
