[Q] BRICK a phone and get rid of clock work mod help. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am trying to permanently brick a evo and get rid of clockwork mod.
I cracked my whole screen and am trying to get a replacement.
What would be the best way to brick my phone and get rid of clockwork mod?
I already tried un rooting, got s-on again but couldn't delete superuser which they check.
Suggestions?
Thanks all!

Oh no worries. They replace screens for $35.
If the phone is fine then they will replace your screen no problems

Do they do this at sprint? Also I have insurance on the phone and brought it in they said they couldn't after they saw the superuser icon :/
Any ideas? Is the 35 with insurance or without

Bring it in to a different store. Rooting a phone cannot crack a screen, obviously. They were just being dicks. Also, if you decide to go the insurance route, they don't care if you're rooted.

It wouldnt die... wow

Just brought my wife's phone into Sprint today with a shattered screen. Her phone was rooted and they didn't say a thing. 1 hour later, brand new screen and they replaced the bezel around the screen that was dented from a previous drop. Free since we have TEP.

The glass and the bezel are actually all one piece. They replace the entire front of the phone for cracked screens.

dropped phone. broke glass. unroot?

i just dropped my evo and shattered the glass. I have the insurance, so no worries. My question is based on other experiences, should I unroot before I take it to the sprint store and have them poke around in it? Didnt know if it mattered or not...
Same here...
Same thing happen to me this morning. My replacement phone will be here tomorrow. I wasn't planning on unrooting it. I'm not sure why a 3 party replacement company will be concerned about rooted phones but if someone has experienced problems in the past please share.
in most cases it should not matter if it was not the root that broke it and in this case it has nothing to do with it but if you are worried about it call your sprint store and ask them if they have no problem with it take it in if not you never have to tell them who you are so dont take it in and try another route
My advise with insurance is to always report the phone lost. Otherwise you have to send it back and if they don't receive it for some reason they will try and charge you. If you report it lost you can just loose it in the trash can or use it as spar parts.
So if something in my pocket broke my camera lens, sprint will still honor the insurance despite my phone having been rooted?

well, i was under impression that theres no charge for repairs with the insurance. I was told $100 if lost/stolen/water damage, free otherwise

I was under this impression as well. Thought the fix changes were free with insurance or 35 dollars without as long as the phone was not broken into 3 or more pieces or no more than 3 (can't remember)

Yes they will. I had my broken plastic cover over the camera lens replaced using the insurance. Took the phone in rooted, running Fresh and themed. No problems at all.

[Q] Fixing scratched screen instore - rooted

So, I'm going go to Sprint to pay the 35 dollars to get my screen fixed. Would it be a big deal if they see that the phone has Cyanogen on it? Bought the phone from Radio Shack so it's not like they would tell them about it. xP
It probably depends on the store, but I took mine in the other day for a screwed up screen, and they fixed it. I know they rebooted it, because it was off when I gave it to them and on when I picked it up. So I know they saw the CyanogenMod boot screen. I'm sure other things may have tipped them off, too, but they didn't give me any trouble about it and let me sign up for their protection plan anyway.
Give it a shot. It's not like they're going to hold your phone ransom.
P.S. I did take my SD card out before I gave it to them.
As always, I recommend you unroot. We all know that rooting doesnt cause hardware malfunctions, or has nothing to do with your scratched screen. But it does void the warranty, and there is always the possibility they will catch it. I wouldnt take the chance.

Well if they do care, and they do catch it, they will permanently void your warranty, so every sprint store will see it and you will never get your phone fixed.
Maybe hold on to your battery while they fix it?
Or just take the steps to do a nandroid backup, then unroot it.
I never bother unrooting before having my phone serviced, I just do a nandroid backup and then install the RUU ROM version. Unless they boot into recovery, they can't tell and it's so much easier to restore when I get it back.
The guys at my sprint store are always fascinated with my phones when I bring them in. I had my Evo rooted before I even activated it, put CM 6.1 on it, tried to activate it but it wouldn't so I took it to the sprint store and they couldent figure it out. Brought it back home, flashed stock RUU and activated just fine, took it back and let the guys play around with CM 6.1 and they were asking how to root theirs.
I guess it just depends on the store

Don't worry, you're rooted EVO will be just fine.. Now, if it were an iPhone and you were going to the * I have Mr job's hot dog up my azz* 'Genius Bar' .. that'd be a different story..
I Called and asked if they cared that my phone was rooted and they didn't. Doesn't sound like your going in under a warranty item your paying them to fix it. They generally only care about rooted if your having software issues. Like I said call the store DON'T give them your name talk to the tech and ask him what their policy is on rooted phones. it would seem to me your paying them to fix the screen it shouldn't matter if its rooted or not. Call them and ask it wont hurt.
If you have TEP on your phone does it still cost $35 to have your screen replaced. I have a tiny scratch on mine and I'm not sure it's worth $35 but if its free I might do it.

Nope with TEP it is free. Had my cracked camera lens fixed yesterday and they new it was rooted. Free with TEP. To be totally safe just nandroid and unroot.
Sorry for the N00B question but how would I nandroid and unroot?
Any cosmetic damage will not be covered under TEP for free you will have to pay the $35 to get the screen fixed. so if the screen just has a scratch they wont replace it for free they will make you pay the $35 fee
If you are going in for a scratched screen, I doubt they would care. Just nandroid backup and flash the stock RUU. However, for software issues, the stores and refurb people are soon to be asked to check in recovery for S-OFF and void your warranty.
Half those guys in the store probably have a rooted phone themselves.
The Sprint store I go to, 2 of the guys have rooted evos and another has a rooted samsung galaxy s. Maybe go in there beforehand and talk to some of them. They dont even care about rooting necessarily; its not like it screws the sales guys or anything.

No, I'm told that if the screen isn't broken, they won't fix the screen for just scratches.

Haha thats actually not true at all. Apple replaced my iPod touch headphones 4 times while I had that device. To get them replaced they needed to see my iPod to check some setting on it. Every time I brought it in it was jailbroken, themed, and had hidden icons so I always had to help them find the settings app. Nobody ever called me out on it being jailbroken and I was never denied service or warranty coverage because of it.

My store, one rooted Evo, and one rooted Intercept. Here we don't care about it too much.... unless the customer is a straight up ass.
Store I use to work at, rooted Evo, rooted Epic, rooted Hero, but they don't do S&R there.

please help. how to unroot with no display?

ok, so i had an accident at work today and i was walking around someones attic and i fell through the ceiling. of course the first thing i noticed was my precious htc evo on the cement with a cracked lcd inside. now i have insurance but it is also rooted and has rooted program icons, superuser icon, s-off, all of which the tech can see once he puts the new screen on. is there a way to wipe it without the use of the lcd that would restore it back to factory and uroot it at the same time?

Well are you sure it still turns on?
If its cracked... how are they going to tell if it's rooted? Especially if the screen doesn't turn on...
can't you damage it more so it won't boot?
Man one of the guys I used to work with fell through a customers ceiling right in front of me a few years ago. It was one of the funniest things I have ever witnessed.
Once he replaces the screen it won't really matter if your rooted or not. I could see the issue before the phone was fixed. But after its kind of a moot point.
It doesn't matter if it is rooted. Asurion sends you a good phone, and you send them back the broken one...done.
You can use adb through the recovery to flash unrevoked forever s-on and then fastboot for the ruu. An 'adb reboot recovery' will get you to the recovery and from there 'adb shell reboot bootloader' will get you to fastboot. No need to even touch the phone.

Do you have TEP, ESRP, OR ERP for insurance? Bottom line is with tep for 7 or ESRP for 4 dollars a month you can have the screen replaced at a service center at no additional cost. Most techs prolly won't care that you are rooted. Even if they tell you that you have to go through asurion then it still don't mater if you ate rooted. Fixing cracked evo displays is done all the time age most service centers. As long as none off the shields are dented inside the phone you should be ok.

What I would do is call first, and without giving your name ask if they will give you crap if you brought your rooted phone in to be fixed. Chances are they won't give a crap considering that rooting does not shatter a glass screen. Just be cool when you go in and don't try to blame the tech for stealing your Sense and you will be fine.

To the best of my knowledge the only thing they can do is flag the device dbr "damage beyond repair" which questionable. Best thing to do is find a 3rd party service center and call them ahead to see if they have the screen before you go in. There are 2 different manufactures of the screens, ask if they have both. 3rd party service and repair centers are less likely to care about rooting as they get paid by Sprint to fix phones.

Way to control unrooted Evo with no touchscreen?
I have a similar problem to sand1303. First, let me describe the situation.
I have an unrooted Evo 4G. The digitizer is damaged and the ribbon is torn to the LCD. Therefore, I cannot change anything on the phone. And it cannot be read as a storage device when connected to my laptop via USB (when I last had it plugged in, I guess it was set for "charge only"). I bought a new phone and would like to retrieve my contacts (most of which were thankfully recovered through the Google sync, but not ALL). I just installed the adt screencast bundle along with the java development tool. The program runs fine, but I cannot access the phone's data. I get a permission denied message when I try to get into the opening up the interface, as shown below.
D:\Downloads\adt-bundle-windows-x86_64\sdk\platform-tools>adb shell
$ su
su: permission denied
$chmod 777/data/dalvik-cache
Usage: chmod <MODE> <FILE>
$cd /data/dalvik-cache
cd /data/dalvik-cache
$ chmod etc etc...
Is there a way to get the last of files off my phone? I would like to browse the directories on my phone...
Thank you.
Dan

[Q] Unroot before getting replaced for cracked screen?

My phone just fell off my bed and hit my bedside table so that screen is now cracked. I'm taking it into Verizon to get replaced since I have the insurance, but will I need to unroot my phone? I'm running Magnolia 1.3.2 right now and everything on the phone still works, but the lower half of the screen looks like a spiderweb
I would do it just incase
It depends... The verizon store I go to... They rooted my phone for me! Real nice guys. Taught me everything I know about root.

I've sent back two due to hardware issues and never unrooted. All they are going to do is replace the screen, reflash the stock ROM, certify it as pre-owned, and send it back out to someone else.

Not here, they check. Daughter took her X in and they checked to see if rooted and told her if they were to accept as is, would cost her 500 to 600 dollars... OR... she could bring it back after the phone was put back to "Stock" condition.
Of course daddy hooked baby girl up.

[Q] finicky power button

So my Inc has a weird power button issue. If I slightly touch the button it acts as though I pushed it. My screen comes on a lot due to it.
Ive tried using compressedair to clean out the button area but that's no good. Any way I can fix this without cracking it open?

No spills, I just seems to bewearing out. I have a couple of cases but neither really help.
It actually seems to work better if I slightly touch it and not physically push it.

Yep black tie coverage. Thats what I decided, I went and waited at best buy for 3 hours today and wound up with a crappy loaner phone (LG Vortex 2.2.2).
Hopefully in a few days I will get the faux upgrade but it is entirely possible that Ill just get a refurb inc.
I will miss the Inc if they don't get me another one.
