Hi all.
As perhaps some of you may already know 'Meizu M9' has been somewhat ported to the 'Nexus One' some major things doesn't work yet though and I wanted to temped a dev or a good cooker to try to port this one for Desire.
I honestly believe that this ols kirf company has managed to make the most beautiful Android rom yet, hell in my opinion Meizu M9 is the sweetest looking GUI for any phone.
Link to the N1 port.
Already a thread going in Q&A and it seems opinion is split between people liking it and those not. Personally, I feel it looks like a poor version of MIUI BUT I will reserve final judgement until it's running on the Desire
It's similar to MIUI ROM, No interest in it.
I like sense...that's all
I saw the UI, and I was like "HOOOOOOLLLLLYYYYY FFFFUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG SSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!". Its pretty much equivalent to the reaction I had when I first saw Sense UI.
Swyped from my HTC Desire running LeeDrOiD 2.3d with Tapatalk.
M9 got a better UI than sense.. except for the whole *phone app icon look n horizontial scrolling .. like to see a port of the music player n media player n settings menu

heres a question for yall, i am coming over from my beloved touch pro and i was wondering is there a way to install htc sence on this device even though its a motorola device. i have grown to really and love sence, or is there something close to that out there?
-rastlin
Launcherpro (just download in market for free) is awsome...and not much different from what I remember from my Hero in 2009.
not without a rom. I don't know of any available. What did you like about sense that you're looking for?
There is also helix launcher
Sent from my DEFY using XDA app
i liked the live animated weather that was in the background. i have it on my raphel and i like watching it. sorry for the responce time i have been rather busy though

hopefully the defy will get the attention of some serious Dev's and Chef's. I'm currently on a G2 but have been keeping my eye on this Defy as a work phone. The price has dropped and we have root and recovery so I may pick one up. Would be nice to have a OEM Htc port of sense
Howdy All!
You probably don't know, but I am (or was until recently) the dev over at MIUI_Au. About a month ago, MIUI shipped out engineering samples of their MI-One device. All the 'third party' translation effort leaders (except, sadly, our own XJ), including me, received a unit (as well as another 500 lucky Chinese users who had to 'win' one).
So I am in possession of an MI-One, which comes with MIUI as standard (obviously).
The world of Android (and indeed XDA as a whole) wouldn't be what it is unless people had ambition.
MIUI will release the M1 eventually, and it will be priced at around half that of the Evo3D ($350 USD).
What follows seems only logical, then.
I know nothing about porting, by the way. So...the main question: Is anyone game enough to help (or rather me help anyone) with getting a head start on a port?
Cheers,
Josh.
Hi Josh,
At first I thought that Sense can be ported to the Galaxy S for example and coming from a Windows mobile device world to Android this didn't seem impossible. Unfortunately some DEVs tried it but No BT, WiFi etc. It is really hard to port Sense to non-HTC devices because of hardware compatibility issue and the lack of drivers. Hell, it's hard to port from Desire HD to Desire.... That's why at that time I bought the Desire and not the Galaxy S. Sense makes Android complete and after trying AOSP or MIUI, I always found myself returning to sense (720p recording + fully functional). Even if it's slower then other ROMS.

It's funny to see how different are we all, and "vive la difference". Few days ago I tried again Sense (3.0 and 3.5), and guess what? I came back without any doubt to XJ MIUI ! That ROM really rocks.
Good luck.

Agree, even if porting is possible drivers are a great issue. Maybe its an option to port just the rosie.apk and the framework? (just an idea, my knowledge on this subject is very limit too...)

One of the major differences in this situation is that the MI-One is built with same SOC as the Evo3D/Sensation - the MSM8660. All bluetooth, wifi, gps, GPU-related, CPU-related and mmc and storage related drivers would likely be the same (or at least very similar).
It isn't like porting it to a device which has a completely different set of components.
Josh.

So am i. After a while sense starts to show its flaws. Sense is a good experience, but stock is the pure android experience ! And with launcher pro and sense clock (the sense clock is the best thing i've seen!) i've built a better experience than sense itself. This days there're widgets and launcher skins to everything. You have to face it, sense is all about the homescreen

Well, not really. Acctually, I really don't like some of the new widgets. The clock, for example - I much prefer the old one which flipped faster.
But also, Sense ROMs are about proper facebook contact synching, synching with outlook and tethering that works well. All of this works out of the box, and all of it is done in style.
Anyway, it is a little off topic.
Kindly respond to the original question if you are interested, developers.
Hi,
well if MI-One same as EVO 3D/Sensation (partition layout/hw/chipset version) then there is no problem, same as HD2 and Desire...both are too different devices (windows/android) but now we have fully working android for both devices even Nexus One *AOSP* also have almost fully working Sense ROM...maybe this is wrong section for answer try Sensation/EVO 3D dev section...
Mi-One would be awesome with a sense rom imo.

Fair Dibs.
You are probably right - I only posted in the Desire section out of habit. I just updated the index and went from their. Well, that, and I know that there are some very skilled developers here.
You did raise an interesting point though: While the hardware is quite similar, the partition scheme is much more complicated (with two system partitions).
Josh
2? Why?

Anyway, it can be done. But without owning the device, it's impossible to test out ideas. Partition layouts are the simple part. Nothing some smart symlinking can't correct.

Am from UK were would be best to buy one of these phones from?
Hello, I am a Sensation XL user and I have the opportunity to switch to a GNex(trade). The reason I would switch to Nexus is the SA HD screen, dual core a9cortex, better gpu, really good looking and working OS. I am currently worried about the lifespan of my SXL since it packs a single core snapdragon and a poor WVGA resolution.
The reason I wouldn't switch is a few sense goodies such as swiping to text, smartdialing, facebook integration, editing media etc. along with losing my iBeats earphones and a really good looking design.
I kept telling myself I do not want the trade but the small resolution, ugly looking fonts and icons and periodical Sense lag keeps haunting me. I don't like rooting, I like having things as stock as possible.
Please help me decide I'm very unsure what to do!
people here are trying to port Sense 4.0 on the Nexus and you're trying to get rid of it?
anyway, you should try the different Sensation 4.0.3 ROMs out there before giving up on it.
if you like plain ICS, you can have it on the Sensation as well...both phones are good. If you like Sense, wait until HTC One series comes out and sell your SXL then.
either way, you can't avoid rooting...you can install the ARHD or InsertCoin's ROMs which are as stock as possible on HTC but definately faster...no Sense lag.
you still have a lot to explore on your phone
LE: nevermind, the ROMs i mentioned above are for Sensation, not S XL
but i think HTC released official ICS for you?

I'm not really that good with the whole root/flash s-off stuff. Even if I dug in this new universe I know there are plenty of problems since there isn't anything official about these homebrew roms. I like my phone but I'm not pleased with the low res and choppy user interface. Maybe Nexus doesn't have the problems htc has with the sense ui (even though my XL has sense 3.5 which should be theoretically faster). My next phone will not be an htc since i've had only htcs since 2010 and am fed up with the looks of it.

Then I would go with the galaxy nexus if I were you. It basically has everything you are looking for. And if you decide to learn to root/unlock boot loaders and what not, the nexus is the easiest to learn with (my opinion) . I think if you go with the galaxy nexus , its a win-win. Good luck

Hey, I am coming from a Nexus One so I'm very comfortable with stock Android.
I have preordered a One X and would like to know what benefits and drawbacks there are with Sense.
Cheers.

Well first of all you coming from a nexus one, you will absolutely love the one X and HTC sense ( even tho I haven't play with the phone yet I'm pretty sure). It is a huge upgrade. As far as sense vs stock well sense offers a lot more customization, excellent widgets, it's eye candy. Stock is always great as it is easy to update, you get the pure google experience and there is less chances of lag and stuff since android OSs are optimized to work really well with nexus phones. Now for drawbacks the only thing I can think of for sense and any other overlays is that it will result in later OS updates. But HTC does a very good job at updating their devices in a timely fashion plus they will focus a lot on the one x so you're good to go.

Awesome. Thanks for your input.
Anyone else got something to add?
Your question is kind of confusing. "stock" for any HTC device is going to be sense. I think you mean AOSP vs Sense. AOSP has less polish and eye candy, but usually offers more speed and better battery life.

Ahh. More specifically I was using CM7. 1.
Back in the days, Sense was really bad and it slowed down your device.
But the One X has the right hardware and Sense 4 is so clean and it's still lokking great.
You will enjoy it!
Until we all have it in our hands, no one really knows.
Sense 4 looks like such an improvement on all levels so we'll see.
I've already tested it for 3 hours and it's amazing.
I agree, the last versions of Sense were buggy and slow but now HTC found the perfect mix of speed and design.
I have to say that Sense is a really good looking skin, the best in my opinion compared to others. My guess is that you'll like it because I don't know many people who really hate it nowadays and I'm sure it's going to be better than it used to be. And AOSP roms are sure to be made at some point. As long as HTC unlocks the device, which I'm assuming they will soon after release.
Awesome. Cheers for the input, looking forward to getting my hands on this phone.
Importantly, sense has more widgets that integrate with android which provide better convenience for users. However, we do see many other alternatives inspired by sense which can be achievable even you're on AOSP. Personally, I feel that there is no other theme that make me feel that what I'm using is really a smartphone other than Sense. Ever since the touch diamond time.

I'm not such a big fan of sense. To me, it's a little uninspired. The white menus with their "shutter" effect is a little jarring if you ask me, and the widgets are becoming a little long in the tooth. If I were to choose any skin it would definitely be Sony's. Theirs is somewhat minimal with very cool and subtle animations and overall a bit "darker", in keeping with Google's AOSP, almost more slick and business-like. That said, I find Sense much better than say what Samsung and LG have on their phones.
In any case, I've placed an order for the X, but I'll be keeping my eye out for both CM9 and MIUI ROMs.
I am using a desire now and can appreciate Sense.
Although I don't use the friendstream and other widgets, the eye candy is nice And I love the other features such as cutting off the ring tone by flipping the phone etc.
The new ones with active lockscreen should be ace.
I always liked Sense then switched roms and started using GO Launcher EX it is brilliant.Though I really am looking forward to seeing what Sense 4 is like on the One X ...roll on next week
Being a noob to android, can anyone explain how much of the features of a phone are likely to be tied to the software rather than hardware?
Obviously very hard to tell with this phone not being out yet, but things like the video recording and taking a picture at the same time, or apt-x compatibility, or even compatibility with the htc media link
Do you need to keep sense in order for those things to work?
It has been over 2.5 years for me without any Android device in my pocket and i just got my One X (Norway)
The device is unlocked and is has no operator lock or software of any kind installed.
I was wandering if there is any way that i can turn off HTC SENSE because it is just horrible. I want the clean ICS experience.
I know some people will reply to this by saying that i should get the galaxy nexus but i really enjoy the hardware in this device and galaxy nexus hasnt really been something i wanted , never.
Well if there is any way to stop sense and simply running clean ICS?
Thanks in advance!
PS: I couldnt find another thread with this question but if there is please feel free to delete this one, i dont want to be any trouble.
Unfortunately you can't just "stop" Sense, it's deeply integrated into the OS on HTC phones. The best you can do is wait for an AOSP ROM to come out, based on plain ICS - but it generally takes a lot of work to get all the drivers working perfectly on AOSP builds, so I expect we'll need to give it time.
On other Sense phones (like the DHD) there have been "no-Sense" scripts available, but these are actually a little misnamed. They don't remove Sense, they really just remove the HTC launcher (called Rosie) and its associated widgets. Things like the Sense dialer, contacts, calendar etc. are all still there even with these no-Sense scripts.
You could always try installing a 3rd party launcher to get a more ICS feel, but Sense will still be there underneath.
So the only way for me to experience is to actually buy a Google experience phone?
Thats unfair in my opinion since HTC should give us the chance, i personally would love to have a stock android option on my One X but if it isnt possible i will return this phone on monday back to the shop.
Thanks for fast reply, i appreciated.

Not exactly. Just wait. It'll be a while, but you have bought the device very early. A lot of people feel like you do about HTC Sense (perhaps not as far as returning the device) so it shouldn't take that long.
HTC Sense isn't that bad. Having said that, I want the same (as you). I've always used CyanogenMod on my HTC devices in the past.
Replacing the launcher makes a significant difference, in my opinion. I currently have Trebuchet Launcher installed (from CM9). Everything else is still HTC Sense. I miss just how tweakable the CyanogenMod ROMs are, but HTC Sense is far from bad.
The device is sold for both hardware and software, remember. You're not buying just the hardware. The software takes up a lot of time for the company in development and it is just as important as the hardware. HTC Sense is their way of differentiating. It's part of what you're paying for, whether you want it or not.
HTC don't exactly make a secret of the fact their phones come with Sense, in fact it's one of their biggest marketing factors, and for some people it's the reason they buy HTC. The only way I know of to get a plain ICS experience is the Galaxy Nexus. Most or all manufacturers selling phones with ICS have their own UI overlay on top. Sense is probably the one that changes things most from the plain ICS experience, but I think they all do it.
I don't know how much time you have to return the phone and get a refund, but if you can, try it with another launcher before you do anything drastic. As aameerp says, it makes a big difference. I ran my DHD with ADW for the first year or so I had it, and only switched back to using the Sense launcher about 6 months ago. ADW worked great and I still got all the good Sense stuff, like Facebook integration, dialer, etc.
Sense isn't just the launcher that controls the home screen and widgets. Bear in mind that some of the Sense apps in the phone (camera, music, etc.) are specifically built for the hardware, so if you change the basic UI with an ICS-style launcher, you can change the look but keep those apps, and continue to make best use of that fantastic hardware.
AOSP ROMs will come in time. This is a brand new phone (mine hasn't even arrived yet ) and there will surely be a Cyanogenmod release for it, at the very least.
