Hey guys,
http://www.facebook.com/Microsoft?v=app_143254022397124
there's a link for Microsoft's CES live stream, currently happening. you have to "like" the page on facebook, but hopefully there'll be some WP7 devices or features announced.
the WP7 woman on now is so enthusiastic it hurts my soul
Well that was crap. No new devices announced, only stuff we knew about the updates and a basic tour of features.
Laaaame.
Not a single new thing shown for wp7... we aren't getting that update anytime this week or next week for that matter....
she did some copy & paste
other stuff like introducing WP7 at its launch
what's their problem?
no update announce?
now Baldmer is blah blah-ing about their Windows team
nothing new.. what a non-event ces
ended
what we have?
I think nothing
is tal all?
i mean are there anymore presentations of MS on CES tomorrow or day after?

I bet when a update finally comes, it will as a damper as this CES event.. like just a small copy/paste update... nothing else.
I'm extremely disappointed with todays presentation. No update was officially announced and they only addressed two future features. And is it just me or was that girl TOO energetic? I love WP7 but this is pretty damn upsetting. If we don't get some big updates soon I'm going back to BlackBerry. Definitely not jumping onto the trashy Android bandwagon or the overdone iPhone crowd. Back to BlackBerry for me if MS don't give us something good...

too bad for me as well, and yeah, that girl was like the first time shake hand with BalDmer and 1st time play with the phone, she should have that presentation at Wp7 launch, not now

Where can I go to watch the CES video again?
I'm not sure, but it's reeeeaaaally not worth it
WP Central have the entire video, nothing new in it though, the over excited, rather thin lady is entertaining if you like that sort of thing.
Almost as bad as last years CES keynote. Absolutely nothing of worth to show.
I was hoping for a WP7 tablet....
Or Silverlight on Xbox 360....
Or app store on Windows/Xbox 360......

DO we know if anymore new handsets are being released with WP7 something preferably 4G for tmo or sprint
we don't know, but there may be some announcements at CES in a couple of days
I know that the Asus phone is being released pretty soon and the HTC 7 Pro on Sprint (most likely it will be 4G).

Highly doubtful it would be 4g, since WP7 currently doesn't support it.

I am buying ASUS phone the day its getting released.. its by far the most professional looking WP7 so far.. maybe after Dell Venue Pro..
I regret not buying ASUS P750 every single day of my life.. I went for HP Ipaq 614C which was a miserable choice.
Can anyone tell me what model, what company this Phone is???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr_n-aoohoI
Its the phone they use in a lot of their marketing materials, I don't believe its real.
Omnia looks closest though.
I am guessing that they will releases the Asus phone at MWC, which isn't too far away. Oh and Toshiba is releasing a WP7 phone sometime in the future, maybe an Acer phone.
Well CES came and went and WP7 was barely a blip in the radar besides the update confirmatin coming this month. im starting to become a little dissapointed as MS, to me, is unfortunately not being aggresive enough following WP7 deployment
Yes, CES was a failure for WP7, not much news, very upsetting in my eyes, Android really showed their azz. Putting Wp7 to shame. I was expecting to see something.
what were y'all expecting to see??? The OS just released, a little early for a huge showing at CES.

It was CES!!
The reason why there was little to no announcements on the mobile front from anyone (even the Android announcements were majority tablet based) was because MWC is just over a month away:
http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/
It is here where they will announce more phones, what's featured in the update to come, new games etc etc.

I kind of think tablets were the main focus. Even though AT&T and Verizon released a boatload of phones, not many phones were released for Sprint or T-Mobile and even those phones weren't so hot.
Well, last year they did unveil Windows Phone 7. I would expect something big this year.

Rumors are going around that Samsung could announce the first 4G WP7 at MWC next month. I'm not getting my hopes too high though. This is only a rumor which is based on 'hints' from a Samsung head.
http://wmpoweruser.com/samsung-hinting-at-4g-windows-phone-7-smartphone/
Besides that, I'm expecting Sprint and Verizon to have their WP7s by April and the second generation of handsets sometime between August and November.
I agree with MWC being next month where we'll get more WP news, and maybe new form factors (chassis 2 and 3?)
In the end, M$ needs to push really hard in getting the word out, I don't think much people even know about WP7 and what advantages it has over competing platforms. Once M$ can get more public awareness, will we see OEM's have more confidence in the platform, and produce more handsets.
We will see a lot more at MWC from WP7. CES is about a lot more than just phones, and is really a bad place to for a company like MS to focus on their phone platform. MWC is the proper stage to do that, and they will.
I think we see the big news being CDMA phones; and secondary to that will be the first update (either just released or to be released very soon), hints at the next update(s), and a glimpse of WP7 phones to be released this summer. Anymore, phones have about a 6 month cycle, so by summer the first release of WP7 handsets will be due for updates.

I'm not sure why people think MS will announce anything CDMA-related there. MWC is an international event and for the past number of years, almost every single phone announced there was GSM-only (i.e. requires SIM card).
MS could just drop some general info about when CDMA phones will be available, but I seriously doubt they will go into any further details and will instead launch more devices for international markets.

This coming update will provide drivers for the new snapdragon chips. The ones that are capable of 14.4 mpbs down. I am guessing we will have HSPA+ really soon.
I decided to share this commentary here from my WP7 fansite http://www.L337ware.com because I wanted to see how you all felt about the subject and honestly my site doesn't get alot of traffic being a homegrown effort.
"First off I have to admit I may be a victim of my own self imposed hype. Now that I got that out of the way I can’t help being a little bit dissapointed at the Windows Phone 7 news coming out of CES 2011. For example where is the promise of new blockbuster applications such as Pandora, Skype, Hulu, and many more key fixtures available of other platforms? How bout some cool new phones to compete with the flood of amazing Android powered hardware on the way? Maybe some new XBox live features like voice support? Instead we get the somewhat creepy rantings from the queen of the butterfly cult and a lackluster list of future game titles. I don’t really need it to justify my purchase but while Microsoft was all over Kinect sales numbers they seem to shy away from talking about the market performance of their now heavily discounted Windows Phones. Honestly most people are well aware of the features of the more immediate update but talking more about the plans for the later half of the year would have giving early adopters quite a bit of comfort. I’m a pretty avid fan of Microsoft and their products but even I can’t help feeling slightly underwhelmed. While I know Microsoft is in this for the long haul and have seen many times how quickly they can refocus a brand to please it’s users I have to say that CES 2011 is not really get me excited for Windows Phone 7."

good thing i didnt jump on the wp7 at first site. i rather had wait to see how the developers would or would not embrace it. also the current phones seem to be outdated after reading the new android phones show cased at ces. the dell venue pro did peak my interest for its portrait slider and large screen but i wanted a front facing camera also. guess ill have to keep waiting for the next best thing
yes no new news for wp7 at ces was dissapointing. they did seem to avoid talking about their phones

Honestly passed the geek **** fight that occurs when we start talking about our toys the Windows Phone has been a great experience so while I won't try to change your mind I will say it's been one of the most comfortable platforms I've used for a mobile device in my lifetime. sad but true they need to pick up the pace and satisfy us, their community and costumers. Both the iOS and Android, their competitors, are growing really fast, adding a lot more for our beloved WP7 to catch up with
heh
now that I've cooled down from the shock I can say that most of us put too much of expectation into yesterday announcement, and when it not satisfy our needs most of us (like me) felt like being cheated or thrown out
as for the new models, I just really don't think that it would make difference, since what we want is the change in software, not a 4.5" with Tigra and half-day battery to go along with it

Says who ??? Out of all the specs of ALL the WP7 phones, nothing is like WOW. Really, everything on every model has been done already by another maker or platform. I don't think anyone wants a 4.5" display, unless it's a tablet, it does not fit in the pocket too well. MS needs a show stopper, a really HOT WP7 phones, they don't have one. There is nice phones don't get me wrong but, no WOW phones.
I can honestly say CES had some Android phones that were faster and nicer displays, still not WOW but, a very strong Hmmmm. If they were WP7 models, I might get a happy about them.
Still dreaming for a Verizon WP7 phone...and not the Trophy
Agreed. Wp7 still doesn't have a superphone that can compete with you-know-iWho.
i am not sure what ppl were hoping from the CES and microsoft, WP7 was just launched in Oct 2010 and we are still waiting for the first update... adding on new things to the OS before the update will be not a wise thing to do...
come on guys this is CES not Mobile world Forum, and i hope some of you were not hoping for more hardware to be launched 3 months after the initial launch of the OS and 6 devices..
i was only hoping for the update date or week only... any way MS was tight liped with the WP7 and i think they will be tight liped for the update as well...

The indecision on the Skydrive stuff is beginning to p*ss me off.
Well I have to say, that it's probably better off to wait for the MWC in February for phone news, I will wait for that to see whether I should wait for some decent spec'd wp7 devices, or just jump on the android ship.
WP7 is impressive OS but there is no killer WP7 device on the market. Dell Venur pro is one worth buying but I don't like its portrait keyboard. I'll wait for Nokia WP7 phone later this year.

These kind of comments really get my goat! Apple didn't release anything or communicate things for ages - yet their fan boys didn't go mad about it! For gods sake the WP7 devices area few months old, MS has arranged an update to fix some issues (of which WP7 is not alone in having when new) and yet you are moaning because it will be a few weeks late?

The update fixes 2 issues: Copy and Paste and the marketplace app. That's it!
If Apple had issues with broken notifications, they wouldn't wait 6 months to address these. Microsoft hasn't even acknowledged that issue.
People would moan less about missing features if everything already there was working properly.
sorta happy with the news
it doesn't fix the panoply of dell issues
it removes chevron
so wtf is the point of it again?
I say it gives xda more time to integrate a proper solution for sideloading
The problem is that M$ is attempting to play in the consumer space. They don't do that well. After their core OS/Office business, they got lucky with XBOX and everyone thinks they are good with the consumer. They aren't! They are great at the enterprise and that's it. And I'm not a fanboi. I bought into WHS, WMC, WP7 AND ZUNE. I know, I know. I feel taken each time. Great ideas but not follow through on those folks parts. Management must really get in the way.

While I agree that if it really is Samsung devices holding it up, that they should push the update out to everyone else, I must defend what I think is easily the best WP7 device on the market. The Samsung takes the best pictures, uses fast NAND memory, has a superb screen, and a sleek form-factor. If that means that I have to wait a few extra weeks for an update, so be it. My phone works great as is. I knew that it wasn't as fully featured as Android or iOS when I bought it, and I knew that the first year or two would likely be bumpy. I was ok with that then, and still am.
Sorry if my having the best Windows Phone causes a delay to updates for your phone.
Seriously guys, how are you that upset because of a delay in the copy and paste update? How much do you even use copy and paste on a smartphone? The only useful thing coming in NoDo is the Marketplace search fix and the speed increase in loading games.
I don't even think I'm going to update mine until Mango, or at least until they have a Homebrew solution. I can deal with the extra 10 seconds to load Fruit Ninja if that means keeping my Homebrew apps and Twin Blades (which will likely go away after the update).
I'd do the update if they included the few annoying features I don't like, like saving the camera settings, pause playback when disconnecting headphones on an incoming call, etc. but not for copy and paste. You lose more updating than you gain.
Apple was able to do updates easily and quickly within months because there was 1 piece of hardware. Obviously all WP7s are not created equal with the Samsung update situation. Microsoft is going to work out the kinks during the first couple updates. It will be smoother and there will be less time between updates as time progresses.
Anyone saying they're going to get rid of their WP7 to get an iPhone or Android is ridiculous. For copy and paste? Really? WP7 outshines those phones by far.
Something about the update stinks.
I really do hope MS makes whatever OEM screwed up pay if that is the case (Samsung).
If it's the carriers, go Apple on them when WP7 gets big, which they will by the way, update fiasco or not.
I guess the main problem is, when we think update, we think easy bug fix. Not this complicated mess we have on our hands.
The whole reason I bought into WP7 was because MS said they'd be handling regular, incremental updates. It looks like NoDo will take seven months to reach end users (assuming it doesn't brick your phone, Samsung users) and adds functionality that was expected in early january.
And apparently the Mango update won't be ready this year.
I remember counselling patience to users about four months ago who were mad there wasn't an update already available, telling them to give it time. I think it's fair to say we've given it time. Maybe WP7 in a year or so, after Mango, but at the moment it's just moving too slowly.

If MS can rearrange its WP7 business model to focus on just one supreme quality handset, and keep complete control over every aspect of it from design and functionality to updates, I could see WP7 having a chance. With Nokia on board, MS has access to quality hardware. MS has it's "Foxconn" in Nokia that would allow it to have the supreme quality. If they will just do it...
Yeah, I know some will say it's immature but as someone who has jumped in front of a train of android fanboys time and time again defending all of my WP7 devices is getting harder and harder when it seems that not even Microsoft wants to take themselves seriously. If they don't begin to take themselves and us, the more intelligent userbase, seriously then I won't be taking them seriously and my 8 WP7 devices will be traded/sold off on craigslist for another unfortunate soul to pick up. I love the WP7 UI, absolutely love it. I don't know where to go after this to get a UI that's even 1/10th as good as the WP7 UI but this phone that microsoft more or less promised the world on is looking less and less so on a daily basis. If Microsoft doesn't stop taking us seriously... I don't know where I'll go for a phone OS because android is now too slow for me and Iphone screens are too tiny, but I will certainly take my rather spendy business elsewhere. I know the meager 2100 dollars I've spent on WP7 devices may not seem like much to a corporate giant like microsoft but that's more than most people are willing to pay in WP7's current form.
I don't blame you dude. Its getting ridiculous! Microsoft stated that the future updates for Windows Phone 7 would blow the Iphone and Android out the water... I was really excited by this as I had just picked up my Mozart, now 6 months on, no updates at all, nothing, zip! I have also been reading that NoDo will be the only update this year!?!?!
Yes I'm excited to have copy and paste on my device (something that should have been present in the first place) but Microsoft are missing a trick here! Yes this phone has a great UI but without getting the simple things right I can see it flopping. I'm also struggling with the accuracy of many of the Microsoft built in features such as Bing Maps, which can't seem to get me anywhere at all!
SORT IT OUT MICROSOFT!

No blame here, either. In my case, I have an iPhone an HD2 and soon the Android equivalent of the iPhone: Nexus S, to keep my tech veins fixed.
In all honesty I don't know where to go from here though. May have to pick up another HD2. Android is too choppy for me and as much as I like the iphone with the WP7 theme the keyboard is too small.

Well I mean I'll be angry too, but wp7 as is, is still a fantastic device. You could just stay with it, and understand that it's just unsupported now.
Or would you bail because of the principle of it all?
I think it's utterly pathetic the way Microsoft is handling this. They came out a strong contender, but now are returning to what they were: a joke.

Primarily the principle... and as much as I hate to admit it I would like multi-tasking... if I am playing ilomilo and I sit my phone down for a minute I have to start the level over again... it's pretty lame. If tombstoning apps worked as it should it wouldn't be an issue.
M$? Seriously? You think they're delaying the update as some sort of diabolical scheme to make money? Or is it just because they want to taunt their users? I'm sorry so much of your self worth is tied up in a phone that you can't bear someone making fun of it.
I think it's pretty obvious it's not out yet because Samsung's firmware is garbage and they're trying to work around it. After this first one future updates should go much more smoothly.
Well I am pretty sure I am picking up a HTC 7 Pro/Arrive from Sprint on March 20th, and it comes pre-installed with the NoDo update. Obviously the update already works and is out if HTC is manufacturing the Arrive and will have them in stores on the 20th.
I would say that the issue of update is falling just on Microsoft.
Dude STFU! Official word was 90 days after CES. Officially they are right on time.
Its like you guys dismissed official word and believed bull**** rumors.

Eh, they've had 6 months to do this. We are not children, they should've tested it on two of their most popular devices much before the release that bricked some devices with 0 benefits. The corporate world is not something you procrastinate in if you want to succeed in whatever market. I have no doubt given the support WP7 will be the best out there but it truly doesn't seem microsoft is taking it seriously. Samsung is garbage when it comes to drivers. That is and will continue to be their weak point for whatever reason.

Dude STFU! Official word was 90 days after CES. Officially they are right on time.
Its like you guys dismissed official word and believed bull**** rumors.
Damn I usually criticize this mediocre OS, but you guys are going too far.

And even more recent word was first two weeks of March. I'm not one of those people who acts as though the update should've been out in January. I went solely on Microsoft's word and it does get annoying when not only are the rumors incorrect but also the official word.

When did they ever officially say "90 days after CES" ? At first it was the "January Update." Then February. Then Early March. Now it's late March. I won't be surprised if it dips into ****ing April.
WP7 is a solid OS, there's nothing mediocre about it. It makes iOS look like an archaic toy in terms of UI.
But with all that said, Microsoft is taking WAY too long to bring the OS up to feature parity with Android and iOS, and it's starting to get a little ****ing ridiculous. what we SHOULD be getting this month is Mango, not NoDo. Microsoft is dragging their damned feet, and the more they do it the further they'll fall behind.
They CANNOT afford to take their sweet damn time like this. If they do, the platform will die.

January and February were tech blog rumors. Android reallly doesnt have much further to advance so that's not a concern. With them it's pretty much a hardware battle from here on out.
Oh my gosh, AT CES THEY SAID 60-90 DAYS! NO TECH BLOG, NO RUMOR. FACT.
I think you should calm the fsk down and stop treating your phone like a football team. You *threw* yourself in front of android fanboys? the chivalry lol!

You sound like the Guy that made a living selling oil lamps in the early 1800s. "There is nothing else they can invent, this is the best technology can get". Yeah right.

Honestly cant think of a good addition thats been added to android since... I don't know... multi-tasking?
I hate to say it, but the OP is right and the defenders are wrong. And I'm throwing down the gauntlet, too: if NoDo doesn't hit in March, I'm DONE.
Engadget's just posted a really nice preview of Windows Phone Mango, you guys should all check it out.
Bad news? Seems like it's still slated for Q4 of this year. Kinda glad I sold my Trophy now - so much for Multitasking in March.
Anyway, good luck!

q4????
er...q3 I thought since MS RTMs their OSes for OEMs between july and august with consumer reach the following fall...
I'm just going by what the article said, maybe Engadget messed up or maybe the release has been pushed back.
Awesome preview wish this update would drop soon.

It was always quite clear it will be Q4. Q3 starts in few days.
I don't believe that you people honestly believe it'll be Q-anything do you?
I call mid-2012 at least.

That's not being a realist. They've already stated this will be released this fall on countless occasions. Nokia has also already stated at least one phone will be released this year as well.
Its coming this year, and I bet they are working overtime to get this out by sept. if possible at least as an update to already circulating hardware.
Mid 2012 at least? That will likely be the newly discovered Tango update. Apollo will follow and likely tie in with Windows 8.
yeah, GREAT preview by engadget...i especially like the part where they say that 3rd party live tile support is finally coming with mango...thanks for the os awareness pals

I agree. Microsoft seems to be much more aggressive with the way Mango is being hyped this early in the development cycle. I will not be at all surprised to see phones with Mango pre-loaded, on store shelves before the end of September. And, I also expect the majority of carriers to be in a status of "delivering update" by mid-October at the latest.
Of course, I also believe that Samsung Focus users on AT&T will probably not receive the update until mid-2012 (still waiting for 7392 here), so in that sense I guess both extremes of the prediction scale are correct.
After reading and watching a lot of the Mango previews around the web I was surprised when I realized that even after iOS 5 was announced, and even comparing Mango to the current state of Android, that Mango is incredibly relevant and probably will be when launched -- hopefully with new hardware. Usually software announcements this far ahead of time really become dated quickly, but most of the features added really bring a lot of parity to Windows Phone.

Why haven't you used one of the workarounds? Worked perfectly fine on my phone. Took all of five minutes.
It was a pretty good review of what's coming and I really look forward to it.
I just hope with 500+ features there is not 500 bugs to go with them....

If it were I in his position, I would respond with: because I shouldn't have to.
Microsoft promised updates, and so far have failed in delivering them in a consistent manner.
Still a huge wp7 fan, don't get me wrong. I don't ever see myself using another platform, but just being honest here.
I agree to a point, but I don't fault Microsoft for this situation. I lay all of the blame right at the feet of AT&T. Their contempt for their customers is astounding. Unfortunately I'm kind of stuck, since I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan, and jumping ship to get the same deal from Verizon before they close the door on their similar plan would incur a sizable ETF.
And, after the Chevron updater near-debacle, I'm a little gun shy of any workarounds that might speed the update process along via unsupported channels. So what's a guy to do?
