[Q] Is there any way to make sure my 4G is functional without being in a 4G area? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm pretty confident the warranty on my Evo will expire before 4G comes to my home area, despite the salesperson stating that it would here prior to 2010 year-end, Sprint has not even announced plans for my city yet.
So, I just wan to make sure it's working without having to travel 3 hrs minimum to test it on an actual WiMax signal.

This will check to make sure your RSA keys are intact. Not sure of a way to actually test the signal without 4G in your area.

Mail me your phone and I'll test it....
seriously though, Your keys can be in tact and all but it could be possible 4g still doesn't work... It's pretty much impossible to know without putting yourself in a 4g area.

I've actually backed them up already, but only after I rooted, nand unlocked, and install a custom ROM. I wasn't aware I could do this before I did.
I ran the grep command and the output was in order, but from what I understand, that output isn't a sure-fire way to insure that it's working.
Any other thoughts?
EDIT: Just noticed that we're both waiting on the same location for 4G.

I'm assuming you're in an area covered by 4G then? You know that the 4G is working on your phone, right?
Let me ask you this, then: what happens in your phones 4G settings menu when you're not getting a signal? Will your phone scan for a few seconds, then after not finding a signal, look like this:

4G stays on but says disconnected after a few seconds?

Yeah, I'm actually in Tampa right now visiting family and got to test 4G for the first time. It's nice but I dont consider 3G in the Detroit area to be that bad. Plus wifi is everywhere and much better on battery life.

Any reason I wouldnt be able to connect to 4g in a 4g covered area?

I currently cant connect to 4g at my house, sprint and clear show im in a good spot for 4g but I cant seem to connect. About 3 weeks ago when I got the phone I wasn't in a covered area but it appears they just added a new tower and now I am. I didn't try to connect again before I flashed a new ROM however. Ive also tried standing outside on my deck to no avail.
Specs are attached as well as my coverage map. If we can get this fixed I'll paypal you a beer.

The coverage map for my city is completely wrong. Using Sensorly to map for a couple weeks showed what I have already observed, massive holes in the coverage here despite Sprint showing solid coverage.
That doesn't mean that's the case where you are at. Find someone else who gets 4g and try yours in the same area.
Agreed, I believe that most coverage maps are for the most part utter BS. Try going back to stock to rule out rom issues. Were you ever able to connect to 4g in a known 4g area?

if you've installed the latest OTA and wimax and you have your phone rooted, this might be the problem.

[Q] Data throttle.

Is there a way to get unthrottled 3g speed back? I don't even get 1mb down.

If there is any throttling going on, it's done on the carrier side and there isn't anything you can do about it. Unless you're in the top 5% of data users, it's doubtful you're being throttled.

Well, on my previous phone, droid 2, it wasn't carrier side, it was built into the framework and would get triggered when you passed x amount of data. Some guy found the file and created a patch to restore normal speed, I flashed it on my droid 2 and went from the 0.5mbps, to 1.5mbps. Wasn't sure if there was something similar to that patch for the Inc 2.

They had that with the original Inc also. Proved to be nothing in our control. False sense of security. Long thread discussing this and found to be useless to most
Wow. Any ballpark on what the "x" amount of data was?
After reading reception issues on this and other forums, I'm thinking this may be related to poor antenna design.

If you're being throttled then I suspect you are doing something very wrong. I've broken 8gb without being throttled, including on my Inc2.
In any case...
In most places in my area I break 1mbit pretty easily. However, there are places where it's not unusual to be stuck at 300k-500k. This isn't throttling. This is poor signal quality in the area. The only way to get around it is get a better signal. Not a stronger signal...a better signal.

So basically, there's nothing I can do, unless I move?

Pretty much, yes. You can also try purchasing a repeater/signal booster (note: these are devices that can be expensive that you mount to a structure, not small devices or stickers you attach to your phone).

Horrible 3G speeds should i be concerned?

I'm having horrible 3G speeds at work here and was wondering if anyone else was having these issues? It shows i have full 3G bars yet when i run speed test i'm consistently getting only around 100 Kbps, I'm not sure if it's the service or the phone.
Anyone else noticing ridiculously slow 3G speeds?
Not sure. Here are my Verizon 3G speeds.

Here's my past couple ones on 3G. I dunno whether or not to call Verizon about this or not.
Why wouldn't you call Verizon about it? If it's a network problem, they could tell you. If it's a defective phone, they could help you with that as well.
I always get horrible 3g speeds at my job... similar to what you are seeing even though the signal is good. I think some towers are slower then others.
Were you getting better speeds before this phone?

Those look identical to Sprint 3G speeds.
Where are you located?

I would give verizon tech support a call, maybe they can provision the phone again and and maybe that would help. You're sitting in a good 3G and 4G area, there isn't any reason to get those kind of speeds you're seeing.

[APP] Real Signal v2 - Might shed light on signal issue?

I developed this app over a year ago for the Incredible when it had really wacked out stock signal bars.
I'm not sure what the Nexus signal bar issue is exactly, but maybe this can help those how care to use it.
I'm in a 3G only area, so I'd like to know how it works with 4G on.
Thanks!

Thanks, but no matter how you cut it, the GN has a signal issue, and its not limited to visual indicators via signal bars. I was literally at -141dbm this weekend and had a signal. That should have never been possible.

Hey adrynalyne, love your work.. been an avid user of your rom contributions over the past year or two... thanks for all that effort!
Where you seeing the -141? You using a 3rd party signal app, logcat or looking in the settings/status? I haven't see anything like that, but I'm only in a 3G zone.
Just wondering if the GN uses raw Telephony object data directly or if Samsung/Verizon has the Telephony wrapped and modified to what they want us to see.

I get a solid -120dbm on my Nexus at home, which on my Droid meant no signal. The Nexus actually says "Time without signal - 100%" under the battery stats. Yet I get a more stable 3G connection most of the time and can actually browse the web. Definitely not reporting correctly.

I was looking under status, which is under about phone.

So you got your new 5G device, seems faster....

I've been wondering how it could be that T-mo could get such an extensive 5G network up so quickly? Then today while perusing through my phone I came across this sweet little nugget.

This explains the slowing of older 4G devices on T-mo's network. They're just pushing more bandwidth over 4G to "special devices" and making a grip on suckers like us buying into "5G". Same thing ATT did with an icon change, but ours is baked in.
Someone doesn't seem to know how NSA works. Your screenshot even shows NR-RSRP with NR-SNR.

It only shows true when 5g data is being actively used.
It only registers it when in active use because of the fact that 4g is the default default when it comes to most phone functions.
Texting, phone calls, mms all go through 4g.
You can also verify that whole deal through my LTE configuration in the screenshot.

Gotta remember, it wasn't too long ago that people thought granting permission for internal storage would end up with their info gone or some other semi-sensationalist dribble.
This was the same way with early 4G phones. The first gen 4G radios used HSDPA+ which late gen 3G radios would connect to, but not fully utilize. How products and services are marketed are always divorced from what they really are, they won't outright lie, but they take advantage that the average customer won't read the fine print, are not engineers, and would complain to bbb(where ratings are bought) and never think about complaining to the FCC. The radio in my n10 pulls 10+ mbps consistently, no LTE branded radio I've had would get better 5 mbps. It's clearly using hardware that, for example my One+ 6T, does not have. According to xml's found in vendor partition, and info from system/vendor props Qualcom engineers have it classified as LTE, T-MOBILE marketing calls it 5G. Labels aside, network performance suggests this device has upgraded hardware. If your not impressed, try disabling ipv6 in your APN, and /proc/net/ipv6 files. You need root/adb anymore to do this. I attest to dramatic differences in network performance as it bypasses some network throttling. I don't know about you, but I waste the 30 gig throttle limit the first two days on the new radio.
