[APP] Real Signal v2 - Might shed light on signal issue? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I developed this app over a year ago for the Incredible when it had really wacked out stock signal bars.
I'm not sure what the Nexus signal bar issue is exactly, but maybe this can help those how care to use it.
I'm in a 3G only area, so I'd like to know how it works with 4G on.
Thanks!

Thanks, but no matter how you cut it, the GN has a signal issue, and its not limited to visual indicators via signal bars. I was literally at -141dbm this weekend and had a signal. That should have never been possible.

Hey adrynalyne, love your work.. been an avid user of your rom contributions over the past year or two... thanks for all that effort!
Where you seeing the -141? You using a 3rd party signal app, logcat or looking in the settings/status? I haven't see anything like that, but I'm only in a 3G zone.
Just wondering if the GN uses raw Telephony object data directly or if Samsung/Verizon has the Telephony wrapped and modified to what they want us to see.

I get a solid -120dbm on my Nexus at home, which on my Droid meant no signal. The Nexus actually says "Time without signal - 100%" under the battery stats. Yet I get a more stable 3G connection most of the time and can actually browse the web. Definitely not reporting correctly.

[Q] Is there any way to make sure my 4G is functional without being in a 4G area?

I'm pretty confident the warranty on my Evo will expire before 4G comes to my home area, despite the salesperson stating that it would here prior to 2010 year-end, Sprint has not even announced plans for my city yet.
So, I just wan to make sure it's working without having to travel 3 hrs minimum to test it on an actual WiMax signal.

This will check to make sure your RSA keys are intact. Not sure of a way to actually test the signal without 4G in your area.

Mail me your phone and I'll test it....
seriously though, Your keys can be in tact and all but it could be possible 4g still doesn't work... It's pretty much impossible to know without putting yourself in a 4g area.

I've actually backed them up already, but only after I rooted, nand unlocked, and install a custom ROM. I wasn't aware I could do this before I did.
I ran the grep command and the output was in order, but from what I understand, that output isn't a sure-fire way to insure that it's working.
Any other thoughts?
EDIT: Just noticed that we're both waiting on the same location for 4G.

I'm assuming you're in an area covered by 4G then? You know that the 4G is working on your phone, right?
Let me ask you this, then: what happens in your phones 4G settings menu when you're not getting a signal? Will your phone scan for a few seconds, then after not finding a signal, look like this:

4G stays on but says disconnected after a few seconds?

Yeah, I'm actually in Tampa right now visiting family and got to test 4G for the first time. It's nice but I dont consider 3G in the Detroit area to be that bad. Plus wifi is everywhere and much better on battery life.

What does LOS look like?

I get terrible ****ing coverage at work, I mean I'm roaming half the time. Sometimes Ill have like 2-3 bars, ill look at my phone, and bam, 0 bars. Other times, Ill get notifications of Voicemail messages, but Ill never have received a call (which im guessing this means calls aint coming thru at times)
Is this the LOS issue? Or just really crappy signal? Is there a notification or something when the LOS issue comes up?
No...i think u jus have the weak signal issue...with los u have no bars....and theres a big white circle where your bars should...it sucks cuz some times u have to restart your phone to get it back...
I suppose it depends on where you are but for me that's what my LOS problem looked like, until I eventually had no signal at all (a white circle with a line through it) and no amount of reboots would bring it back. I bought 2 ET4G's and we have a small tower farm down the block where the big 4 and Clearwire all have a presence. I'd put both phones down on the table next to each other and my phone would roam over to Verizon and my wife's would show 5 bars on Sprint. I had to send my ET4G back and revert to my old HTC Hero and that has 5 bars at my house. I had high hopes for my Epic Touch 4G but it was not to be.
Its a circle with a line through it indicating no service
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed
yeah then I dont htink I got LOS, i still miss calls because of this **** reception though.
Gonna set up an airrave at work soon.. hope that helps **** out

A bit offtopic but what browser is that?

Not caused by low battery. Did the MSL reset 4 days ago and haven't had LOS since.

Horrible 3G speeds should i be concerned?

I'm having horrible 3G speeds at work here and was wondering if anyone else was having these issues? It shows i have full 3G bars yet when i run speed test i'm consistently getting only around 100 Kbps, I'm not sure if it's the service or the phone.
Anyone else noticing ridiculously slow 3G speeds?
Not sure. Here are my Verizon 3G speeds.

Here's my past couple ones on 3G. I dunno whether or not to call Verizon about this or not.
Why wouldn't you call Verizon about it? If it's a network problem, they could tell you. If it's a defective phone, they could help you with that as well.
I always get horrible 3g speeds at my job... similar to what you are seeing even though the signal is good. I think some towers are slower then others.
Were you getting better speeds before this phone?

Those look identical to Sprint 3G speeds.
Where are you located?

I would give verizon tech support a call, maybe they can provision the phone again and and maybe that would help. You're sitting in a good 3G and 4G area, there isn't any reason to get those kind of speeds you're seeing.

If your device is getting bad reception...

You need to exchange it asap. It's as simple as that, you have a bad unit. A software patch or anything else isn't really going to help you. So save yourself some headache and just call up Verizon. Tests have been done (on working units) that show the nexus gets similar or even better connections compared to Verizon's other offerings.
I tested this myself vs my fiance's Droid 3. She showed more bars than I but I had a better download speed and slightly lower db. Both on 3G. To be more conclusive, she had four bars while I had NONE and similar db.
The only thing Verizon is going to do is make our bars show like the Droid 3 and other phones such as the RAZR. So exchange until you get a working unit, we really can't help you. That is all.

You just verified that Verizon is doing the right thing. It's not the bars that matter it's the db. If you are getting similar db then you are getting the same signal strength regardless of whether it shows 1 or 4 bars.
I think this is what I'm going to do. I only have until next Thursday to return the phone since I bought my Gnex from a non-corporate store so tomorrow I'm going to take my re-locked nexus back and exchange for another. If that one still sucks in the reception department, I guess I'm getting a Razr.
Added pictures of what a working device should be getting for more evidence that this isn't everyone's problem.

Already switched out my device once and it is having the exact same problem. So I have 2 brand new phones and the first one worked great for a couple days and then they had their nationwide outage. I kind of doubt Verizon will keep switching phones until they find a working one...if indeed that is the problem. I figured if it was a phone defect that new sites would be all over this.
What is considered a good signal strength reading? Mine has varied from -80 to -110 at times.
Between -85 and -75 is considered excellent.

Signal issue with 1 gnex

Hey there guys since January me and my brother plus other family members switched from AT&T to Verizon , until couple days ago my brother started seeing very low signal on his Galaxy Nexus.
We live in NY , Queens he lives 10 minutes away from me it's different city but it's a 10-15 minute walk.
I will post two screenshot from same application to check tower status and signal strength.
First One is my screenshot

Second one is his
+1 his
Now question is this is def a Verizon problem , how do I get them to help me with this? some sort of Booster or anything : please also note that adress on my bill is assigned to me not him.
Thank you !
Sounds more like an issue with signal in his house or he may be just far enough away from the tower. Have you compared your phone's signal at his house?

I have not actually , but it was just fine since January he even had 1 4G bar , so in case that it's Verizon's fault how can I make them give us a signal extender any ideas?
Umm ask the big man upstairs for a miracle? I've never had any luck getting VZW to admit fault with anything...
Hey guys I have an interesting update , it seems there might be some sort of signal jammer inside his house he has no idea what it could be , as soon as he walks out of his house to his yard he gets perfect signal -> once he goes inside the house almost dead zone.
Question is now , how to look for signal jammers?
