You need to exchange it asap. It's as simple as that, you have a bad unit. A software patch or anything else isn't really going to help you. So save yourself some headache and just call up Verizon. Tests have been done (on working units) that show the nexus gets similar or even better connections compared to Verizon's other offerings.
I tested this myself vs my fiance's Droid 3. She showed more bars than I but I had a better download speed and slightly lower db. Both on 3G. To be more conclusive, she had four bars while I had NONE and similar db.
The only thing Verizon is going to do is make our bars show like the Droid 3 and other phones such as the RAZR. So exchange until you get a working unit, we really can't help you. That is all.

You just verified that Verizon is doing the right thing. It's not the bars that matter it's the db. If you are getting similar db then you are getting the same signal strength regardless of whether it shows 1 or 4 bars.
I think this is what I'm going to do. I only have until next Thursday to return the phone since I bought my Gnex from a non-corporate store so tomorrow I'm going to take my re-locked nexus back and exchange for another. If that one still sucks in the reception department, I guess I'm getting a Razr.
Added pictures of what a working device should be getting for more evidence that this isn't everyone's problem.

Already switched out my device once and it is having the exact same problem. So I have 2 brand new phones and the first one worked great for a couple days and then they had their nationwide outage. I kind of doubt Verizon will keep switching phones until they find a working one...if indeed that is the problem. I figured if it was a phone defect that new sites would be all over this.
What is considered a good signal strength reading? Mine has varied from -80 to -110 at times.
Between -85 and -75 is considered excellent.

Since installing RC2 & after my wifi signal seems to be lower than it was. I can be right next to the access point & have full signal strength then just walk away 15 ft & it drops more than half. Any way to really calibrate or fine tune it?

Well, best you could do would be to re-flash RC2, or my better suggestion would be to flash to the latest nightly, as they incldue fixes for gps, wifi, and other things.
You do realize that a "bar" is not any type of unit of signal strength measurement? Basically cm7 uses different thresholds for number of "bars" displayed. The signal strength is the same.
I compared with a co-workers EVO and anothers G2 and their # of bars was 2x higher than mine. So if that is not indicative in CMod7 than that's fine. I just wanted to make sure that the wifi was still functioning correctly. I wish there was a wifi diagnostic I could run.
Yeah. Have the same problem on Nightlies 19 but if you say the strength is the same then I guess it isn't really a problem.

no i agree...whenever im on a sense rom or MIUI i have almost full signal and im 20-30ft away...but ever since ive been on CM7 i can be standing or sitting in the exact same place and i'll have one signal bar and sometimes it'll even lose almost all of it's signal for a few seconds...the only time its at full signal strength is when i am right next to it...i just assume it's something with CM7 that still has to be fixed...but i definitely notice a speed difference between 2 bars and one
As stated above, use the latest Nightly. Works fine for me. Especially considering I can pick up AP's on the opposite side of a commercial building.
So i picked up a Galaxy Nexus, was brand new (almost, package was opened but never used, checked the UPtime on the battery was only mins..) anyway. im and pretty certain it wasnt hacked or anything. it was just someone trying to sell their new free phone from a contract. model number i9250m
So i brought it to my GF's house, where i have never had any wifi issues, it would show normal good bars, connect and then get the IP.. internet would work fine, then all of a sudden, nothing.. turning Wifi on/off again, would sometimes allowe it to reset, but still, nothing more than 20 seconds... when i would use it in the bathroom (router is in the landlords on the other side of the wall.) it would work fine. No other devices in the house would give any issues over wifi...
SInce it was only 4.0.2 i though i would upgrade.. so i tried the nightly build cyanogen mod rom, cm-9-20120602-NIGHTLY-maguro-signed.zip still the same issue, even at my house, nothing, unless im 2 feet from the router.. 4-10 feet and a wall, no luck at all.
after some reasearch, they said change it to 5.0 ghz from 2.4, using one or the other didnt really change anything, (i think 5.0 didnt even work) i installed wifi analiser, here is what it is showing

with this reception, wifi only works from 4 feet. and is not that stable.. when it is connecting, it is super fast, but not consistant at all.
I have changed teh channel from 6 to 11, since wifi analizer said it was a better one..
I am using AWS (wind mobilicity) network. ANyone have any input or help?
thanks

i just replaced my new gnex for the very reason you stated. the phone also got very warm while charging and took grainy pictures.
so far the replacement is doing all 3 things much better.
i would suggest trying to get a replacement.
the funniest thing, i have 2 boxes (internet with built in router) and a seperate linksys, (used as a switch) i just disabled wif on the switch and everything works! that doesn really explain the problem at my g/fs house,
this was weird, because i was hacing the same issue with my Nexus S and an Ipad.. hopefully i dont have a faulty Wifi.. thanks for the help..
That's weird. You have super strong signal. I don't know why it isn't working. Haven't seen many posts about this issue.
just decided to test out my normal data speeds when home and not using wifi and im shocked to find out im only getting in the 20-40 kb/s a second download while the upload is a normal 1500-2000 kb/s most of the time. my internet/play store/etc were working fine while i was at work yesterday over the tmobile network, not sure of exact speeds though. i cant remember the last time i used the mobile network at my house and not wifi so i cant tell if its my house as a problem or just some flukey network problem but ive been trying to find everything that would cause this with no luck so far. any ideas?
Are you rooted and do you have your IMEI? What's your signal strength? Go to settings / about phone/ status and signal
I personally average between 73-85dBm and I gt good speeds

There appears to be a problem with the T-Mobile network today. Started earlier this morning on all my phones and friends phones. I'm in southern California

yes i am rooter but i still have my imei, i was just out for a bit and did a speedtest near the store and it came out decent enough. just got back home and getting around 7.2 mb/s down and 1.4 up with a 340 ping, not great but workable. im guessing it was just on tmobiles end, and a coincidence it worked itself just in time for me to test it again out of the house thanks for the help!

I was amazed at this phone on verizon.

You got me beat. I was amazed at the 24-26 I got in the Cincinnati-day ohio area. Coming from a galaxy s3 I was use to 6-8 on average.
This is the best I've gotten so far. Northwest Minneapolis suburbs.
I don't get higher than 9 down where I am. I'm actually sort of disappointed in this. I was hoping that my area was on XLTE. On regular LTE, the network is so saturated and crappy. I have 50/5 internet through Centurylink, with a Netgear Nighthawk router. My wifi speed tops out at 12 down. I get 26 down on my macbook, and 46 down on a wired connection.
I really was hoping for better results. I mean I know that the LTE situation in my area is a sad joke, but I have some pretty good speeds through CL.
I'm pretty happy

my area used to get horrible speeds of like 1mbps. I complained a lot. I think they finally fixed the towers here, and my g2 started getting like 10 to 15...ny note 4 gets 20 to 30. it's pretty awesome.

You guys still on "global" or did you switch to "LTE/CDMA"? Trying to decide if I should switch. Not really noticing any problems with Global but I haven't really ran much tests. Will do some today and post back.
I got 25mpbs where my g2 couldn't pull 10

switched to LTE/CDMA and noticed no difference.
Did this one just yesterday morning. Super happy.
Took this right after getting the phone.
The was on my Note 3, but the Note 4 would have gotten the exact same thing.

I get those speeds throughout my college campus in So Cal. I've actually stopped using the campus Wi-Fi because of it. Thank god for unlimited data.
I notice that OP3 generally performs poorer when it comes to reception when compared against my family's other devices the OnePlus One and LG G Flex 2. They are all on the same T-Mobile family plan, and the use the same home WiFi, but the OP3 is clearly the weakest of the bunch. 4G LTE and WiFi download speeds are generally a little lower compared to the other two phones, on today's test 4G LTE upload speeds were drastically worse.
A simple side by side GPS test also showed poorer performance.
Is this typical of metal phones in general, or is something clearly at fault with the OP3?
I haven't had any real show stopping issues that would make me want to return the phone, but I've been putting this phone through its paces with Pokémon Go, and it's been a pretty annoying experience thus far..
Edit: Below is a comparison of the LG G Flex 2 and OnePlus 3 using the GPS Test app. 13/20 satellites is usually as high as I've seen the OP3 go with any consistency, it's usually lower than that, whereas the LG G Flex 2 easily picks up almost all of the satellites in view. Feel free to share your own screenshots!!

I have found the same issue and am looking for a fix. I love this phone but it definitely has issues maintaining solid reception. Have you had any luck?
I have a feeling that OP has not boosted the antenna strength in order to get more battery power. I noticed that often that during sleep that if the phone receives SMS, it's delayed by 8mins with OP3. With other phones, I get the text in under 1-2 mins if the device is sleep. I have not lost signal with any other phones but with the OP3 I have lost signal multiple times while in the middle of talking (GSM) with others.
I don't think it's only metal phones, I've had Nexus 6P and it's signal quality is good. It's in the software so I hope they can fix it in a later release. This phone is only good when it's screen on and not walking around where signal can be weak.
hey everyone,.. who have issues with the signal quality
do you have issues on custom roms as well? Just checking... pls let me know! Thanks!
