After installing RSD Lite. I could see S Flash OMAP3630 after I plugin the defy via usb while the phone is on bootloader (Power+VolUp)
Does it mean the the defy has a OMAP3630 and not a 3610?
Yes, a lot of people says "that is an error!! DONT CARE!"
A loot of people says, no, other says yes, and motorola don't care about it...
But in my opinion have a 3630 ( not sure ).
I think thats what the driver say it is...
The only way to find out will be to install a 3610 driver specifically and try if PC recognizes this. Doesnt it make sense?
why motorola make a 3630 driver for a 3610 CPu?
no logic...

its an unified driver for the hole range of 36xx cpu's.
and in the other thread its come to the point it's a 3615 cpu with 3D but without 720p encoding/decoding ...

i know this thread (i contributed some posts myself) but when its a 3615 w 3d and w/o hd en/decoding, how come that it plays 720p content in mp4/h.264 like a charm?

i think, we can't be shure until it the defy gets shred to pieces by ifixit or some other daredevil

Yes it's possible, but if the bit rate goes up 4mb/s, you can't play it.. why?
easy, the band width isn't sufficient, and phone overloads.
I thing a bitrate of 30000kbps it's ok, nothing more....

the processor of defy is a Texas Instruments OMAP3630 because it included a POWERVR SGX graphics 530. POWERVR is recognized by Quadrant.

That's physically impossible!
Only 3630/3622 come with the package required for POP (stacked memory chip). If it is 361x, where is the memory chip? It's very hard to miss shuch a huge chip.

No, that's an outdated presentation. In the latest (Nov. 2010) Technical Reference Manual, ALL 36xx variants have identical full speed GPUs.
So where can we find the Windows 7 drivers for this so I can get RSDLite working?
At the moment getting a msg indicating drivers are not installed??
Edit: used winxp machine. S/W issue at my end.
hi, i want do something on AM3703, it's same with omap 3630? thanks in advance!
I hope so ,but ,I don't believe it has the opma3630.may be there is an error on the software. If defy's cpu is 3630,it can be more attracktive!so,why moto didn't tell us it's cpu is 3630?
Believe what u want...it works...and it works great
Thats all that matters
When the Defy+ comes out, just benchmark it...surely a 3610 + kyro will be slightly less powerful than a 3630

Same reason they used when they said it didn't have ANY Graphic Chip and the same one when they said the phone only had a 2 point Multitouch Screen.
I believe they limited the device softwarewise in order to strategise the launch of its successor Defy+ .
Why just not compare performance with phones for which we know they have 3630 for sure and then we will know

Sounds like either moto has a plan and lied, or their spokes person havent a clue.
I vote for the latter...
i think defy's cpu is 3630.so defy+ update cpu to 3630 is a joke.

thats a nice little lappie.
i have a asus eepc hope that android becomes available when its out
all this tech keeps me wondering where we would be in 10 years
I think Qualcomm have finally realised that their pricing structure was not helping them out. By charging extra for decent drivers they were hurting their own image since it was causing fragmentation. The Hummingbird and A4 GPU kills the snapdragon as it is, although the CPU isnt any better really.
Hopefully this will see Android getting much better games and movie playback and encoding.

I don't know how this will affect our phones, but let me tell you this.My laptop has an ATI 4670HD GPU.I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it (don't like windows) and then installed ATI's current drivers, version 9.8 I think.Compiz benchmark(it's a tool that monitors how many FPS your GPU gives at each time) gave me an average of 80FPS.Now,after some 9 months or so,I have Ubuntu 10.04 and ATI's 10.6 driver. The same test now gives an average of 240 FPS(and at this I might be a little conservative).
I know it's completely off-topic.I just posted to let you know what good drivers can do.
Okay, i have some questions...
1- If the cpu on the defy is the same on Droid 2 ( omap 3630 with VR530GPU ) if you see the Drivers on Droid 2 and put in to Defy, the device will start truth?
i mean, to know finally what cpu type use our phone.
If the Droid 2 drivers don't work, That means it is not the same processor right?
It may be that the driver of motorola droid defy and 2 are identical? there is any way to confirm that?
Thanks for the posible answers.
PD: srry my bad english
I think it's different from a PC. There is no seperate CPU, it's a system on a chip, no?
Parts of it can be disabled, and the Defy seems to have the HD movie part disabled. Maybe you could unlock this if it's actually working, like with graphics cards.

Of course, it's sistem on a chip.
But if Defy have a Cortex A8 ( omap 3630-SGX530 ) it's the same as Droid 2 right?
I think, the Defy have the same SOC as Droid2, my friend have one too, and benches, reproduces video like the Defy.
Hi ,
Although many people believe that defy uses OMAP 3630 instead of 3610/3615 or something else, you can only get this conclusion from the 3D/video performance or features defy supported. But the problem is, can you be sure?
I wrote a small native C program and read out the value of CPU's register that controls the OMAP FEATURE. The value is 0xC00. You can check the 36xx TRM:
at focus.ti.com/pdfs/wtbu/SWPU177B_FinalEPDF_12_04_2009.pdf
The values means that defy has a IVA 2.2 accellerator 2.2 and SGX .
So the CPU is neither 3610 nor 3615 . It is definitely 3630-800.
I think this is a convincing proof. If you still dont believe it, the only way is to open your defy and take a look at the ID on the chip...
BTW: I only tested on my phone, which is UK 2.21 version. Not sure for other version....

I am not sure. Can someone post a video sample? By saying "720P" , what is the coding format? Maybe someone can post a 720P video sample recorded by MS2.

@reasly: could you please explain what your program exactly does? i understand it as a tool which reads out a special hardware register (the one which stands für the iva2.2 module according to the ti document) and returns a value. the value 0xC00 means module existent and something like 0x000 means module not existent. am i understanding it correctly?
TRM does not list such CPU as 3610, it mentions 3611 as most limited by features. As 36xx are produced for big corporations like Moto, we can't be sure what's really going on with CPU naming. It looks more like marketing stuff for me.
I also got [email protected] for Defy bough at T-Mobile USA. It does not directly confirm that the CPU is 3630. It just reports that such features as IVA or SGX are not disabled.
Motorola can say the CPU is 3610 (whatever) with those features enabled ;-)
my point exactly! its just names & marketing mumbo jumbo. the important thing is the enabled AND ACCESSABLE features. and with th iva2.2 module working there is a good possibility to enable 720p encoding/decoding on the device, which would be important for me.

720p (1280x720) is too high a resolution for the Defy (854x480). You would be wasting space/resources to display a scaled-down video.
Consider converting a 720p video to a more useful format for your device
Unless ofcourse you just want to see it, 'because it can be done'.
I took a look at the technical reference (page 193 of 3630..lol!) in the CONTROL_FEATURE_OMAP_STATUS register description.
The value 0xC00 translates to 0000 1100 0000 0000, that is NO IVA hardware acceleration and 128K L2 cache, if I'm right.
Where did you get those info's about it being the 3630??
You should give that program to a droid X user to run on its phone...

I think that isn't possible... in CPU maybe ( but i'm still in doubt ) in GPU, no color...
The Galaxy S have better GPU clocked to 200Mhz....
The defy GPU as underclocked to 110Mhz but at 200Mhz, Galaxy S stills better in GPU performance.
Maybe if any developer try to overclock the GPU, we can obtain some more extra graphics power.

I agree, but I think the desire is even better for CPU..
I have a galaxy s. My gf has a defy. No. It doesn't beat the galaxy. The io speed is slow because of the rfs file system that Samsung used. The defy is an awesome and very capable phone ( I envy her sometimes) but the galaxy has better hardware.

the defy is a meaner beast then most think! especially overclocked with froyo!
gpu on galaxy is the 540 vs 530 on defy, so no defy wont win on 3d the galaxy...
well...i mean u never know because in that vid, defy hits 4x fps when galaxy hits 5x fps. I've read on forum that 2.2 froyo is twice faster then 2.1 but lets see when froyo hits defy.
I believe defy will get atleast same fps as galaxy in that game atleast with froyo
EDIT: i mean adreno 200 which is Desire's GPU, it's twice as fast as PowerVR 530 (Defy's GPU) and the CPU is scorpion 1ghz (desire) but desire has half the FPS compared to Defy...
Adreno 200 inside the QSD8x50 (1 GHz) and MSM7x27 (600 MHz A11+L2 cache). It offers a programmable function pipeline and streaming textures with support for OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenVG 1.1, EGL 1.3, Direct3D Mobile, SVGT 1.2 and DirectDraw.

when i heard that Defy's GPU (PowerVR SGX 530) runs at 200 mhz clock speed which is quite slow compared to adreno 200 (HTC DESIRE's GPU) so i mean, i don't think it's all about GPU or CPU ?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-GLKQ2W528
I heard at some places that 2.2 update will overclock Defy's cpu to 1ghz and in this video this guy has cpu at 1ghz and it basically scores 1414 in quadrant benchmark which is above Nexus one running at 2.2
The PowerVR SGX 530 of the Defy (also iPhone 3GS) runs circles around the Adreno 200 of the Desire, Nexus One etc when it comes to 3D performance. That's why you're seeing almost double the score in neocore compared to the Desire.
The Froyo update doesn't do much to the raw 3D performance of the Defy. I'm running 2.2.1 @ 1,2 GHz and I'm "still" at 40-something FPS in neocore (1500+ points in Quadrant). It's just too dependent on GPU performance.
That's the reason why even the Nokia N8 with it's crap CPU and less RAM shines at 3D games - it's got an awesome GPU.
So for reaching the 3D performance of the Galaxy S or Adreno 205 devices like the Desire HD? No dice! (unless someone figures out how to overclock the GPU safely)
But having said that, even the arguably most-demanding 3D game for Android available, Dungeon Defenders, runs just fine on the Defy. Maybe not totally buttery smooth like on the SGS, but still very fluently. Something the Desire isn't capable of and one of the reasons for me getting a Defy rather than a Desire.
I'm starting to like the Defy more and more...
I got a SGS and my GF will get a Defy today... We might swap because she likes the looks of a SGS more (women).
I been reading on the Devy and it's puting up quite a fight against SGS so I think I won't regret trading and losing some power.
Also wanting to get into Android and customising which somehow I think I better use the cheaper Defy for.
Love the defy, my boss has a Desire HD its just a bit too big really and does not perform as well, especially if you put it under the tap!
Whn you buy defy, mak sure that the ear speaker is working properly becaue it is very common for defy to have its ear speakers stop workng.
I bought mine a month ago and after two wees, it stopped working, now i'll be getting a new defy tomorow hopefully or arepaired one :/
but just to le you know that this is the only defect in this handset.
EDIT: Samsung galaxy is running on 2.2 froyo + it has a more latest GPU and higher CPU so make sure if these things don't matter to you then you can trade your SGS for defy
I need a new mobile.I have considered Desire and Defy. The only difference between this two is the processor.Defy has 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor and the desire has 1 GHz Scorpion processor.Which is the best between these two.I need it mainly for gaming. So i need all the latest games to work without any lag.Does heavy games run on Defy without any lag?
Sorry for my Bad English
Not an expert in games here... but i can tell you Cortex from TI is much better in terms of performances. I'd go for Defy even if the Qualcomm cpu inside Desire clocks 200mhz more...
EDIT: also consider the PowerVR 530 graphic chip inside the Defy, it's not bad for gaming. AFAIK you can run any game with no problems provided that you download the powerVR version of the game (i mean, forget those Tegra2 or Xperia Play dedicated games)
For processor of defy, tout can overclock it to 1.2 ghz. for tegra games, download chain fire 3d from market. You have to be rooted to do both.

Oh don't worry for that, the Android Market (at least the "desktop version") will tell you whether a game is compatible with your device or not. In the mobile version should be even easier since the game won't appear at all.
